Redcliffe Dolphins came out firing in the Cyril Connell Cup grand final against Townsville Blackhawks and kept firing until the final siren to claim the 24-10 win.

Dolphins halfback Noah Fien was first to cross for the Dolphins, followed by Amare

Amare Wynyard and Nate Berrigan in the first half, to take them into half-time 16-0 up.

The Blackhawks were first to strike in the second half through second rower Taakoi Benioni, then centre Cohen Dittman scored a runaway try to close the gap that bit further as the Blackhawks fought to stay in the game.

Match: Blackhawks v Dolphins

Grand Final – Saturday 13th April

But Dolphins lock and player of the match Charlie Dickson sealed the deal for the Dolphins when he crossed for four points at the 52-minute mark.

Dolphins coach Larry Dickson – dad to Charlie – said he was proud of every single player in his side.

“It’s hard to put into words how I feel… geez they worked hard,” Dickson said.

“Our aim today was to be the best version of ourselves… we just wanted to do what we do well and we tried to stick to that.

“How torrid our pre-season was, and let’s not forget after Round 3 we were coming dead last.

The heat and the flack we copped was pretty immense, so everyone needs to celebrate these guys for what they’ve done and the work that they’ve put in to get here. Their response has been phenomenal.”

Noting it was no mean feat to win five games on the trot to make the grand final, Dickson said the boys simply worked hard to get the job done.

“It’s no mean feat but we did the work,” Dickson said.

“I know there was panic stations at the start when we drew one and lost one, but us coaching staff knew the work that we’d done… we just needed to trust it would come to the forefront with the boys.”

Dickson said his side executed everything they had been working on in training and it showed.

“There was a moment towards at the end before we scored that last try and kicked that penalty where we just defended our line for three sets and forced an error.

That’s the stuff we worked on the whole pre-season and that’s the epitome of what we worked for,” Dickson said.

“For it to come out today, it shows these young fellas, how hard they worked, they’ll get the rewards.

“All of them put in the work. All of them.. the whole team, the whole squad, the coaching staff. When you win a grand final it’s never off the back of one person, it’s off the back of everyone.

“I put a lot of heat on my spine about three of four weeks ago and I think their response to that has been excellent.”

Dickson was chuffed to see Charlie get player of the match.

“Charlie is just going to give you what Charlie gives you… he’s just a competitor… he’s not the biggest fella but he just wants to compete on everything,” Dickson said.

“Would’ve loved to play beside him.”

Dickson added the Blackhawks, coached by Nathan Norford, were tough competitors and they should be proud of their performance.

“For them to travel down here and their response… we got out to 16-nil and they came out after half-time and really stuck it to us so full credit to those guys,” Dickson said.

“Very well coached. Their coach, coaching staff and club really got behind them as a group and they did excellent today.”

Dolphins, Blackhawks romp to Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup grand final

A hot day in Ipswich has seen Redcliffe blow away the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and swim into the final like a pod of angry mean Dolphins.

Fans at North Ipswich Reserve got their money’s worth with two games in one semi-final.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls fans were thinking about finals next week when half Coby Black dominated the first 20 minutes with deft passing and kicking.

Queensland Maroons Long Lunch 2023 – MORE INFO Click here

When Black kicked 80 metres off his own line and Saxon Innes jumped on the ball for his half Black to then step over the line, it looked like the Seagulls had corrected the mistakes of a two-point loss last week to the Dolphins.

Then the second game started, and it was all Dolphins.

Dolphins’ half John Fineanganofo went berserk and from the 25-minute mark until the 58th minute Dolphins scored six tries to dominate and end the final.

Fineanganofo ended up with three tries which varied from dummy half work, to running freely up the middle.

No matter where he ran, he was having a finals day out.

The Dolphins rode it out until the end and a 56-18 win that was built on waiting for your chance.

Dolphins 56 – 28 WM Seagulls
SEMI FINAL – SATURDAY 15TH APRIL

As the heat rose, the big Dolphins didn’t wilt like expected they found new energy that the Wynnum Manly Seagulls couldn’t match.

Dolphins coach Scott Tronc wasn’t too concerned even after that first 20.

“We went away from what we do and a lot of one out running, but once we got our head together and then we were able to do our thing.

“That then allowed our guys like John Fineanganofo to do his thing.

“He’s just a pure footballer, you can put him anywhere and he can do some special things, he’s played hooker and lock and today scores three tries at five eighth.”

The Dolphins second half attacking masterclass inspired the Townsville Blackhawks first half with the Blackhawks steamrolling the Jets with big forwards streaming through the middle.

The Blackhawks won through to another Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup final, with next week being their 10th final appearance since 2009.

Townsville will be trying to right the wrongs of the last two finals losses in 2021 and 2022.

The game was all but over at half time with the Townsville Blackhawks ahead 20-6 and having one eye on the Redcliffe Dolphins next week.

The Blackhawks were outstanding with the full spectrum of skills on display.

They started with the long ball for Rayzarlin Pearson to score in the corner and then the short balls to space came out with Townsville going 100 metres and front rower Jamal Shibasaki running 50 of them.

Elijah-Shane Tapau strolled over and Loranzo Fono barged over.

The Blackhawks strength and speed through the middle meant the Jets had to tighten up and then the Blackhawks would find space on the outside where the defence had become stretched.

Jets v Blackhawks
SEMI FINAL – SATURDAY 15TH APRIL

The Blackhawks targeted the Jets right hand side and kicked well to the corners to make sure the Jets were always jammed in and bringing it out.

Ipswich staged a great fighting finals comeback to score three tries in nine minutes to put some scare into the Blackhawks but the first half was haunting the Jets who weren’t able to peg the lead back.

Then it was the speed of Rayzarlin Pearson who started the points in the fifth minute and ended it in the 68th minute.

Blackhawks coach Zeb Kyle said he was ready for another grand final week.

“Ipswich came back at us and I think if that sin bin happens and we are maybe a man down then that changes the story a bit,” Kyle said.

“It was our first half that won it and then we just held on.

“Few things to work on this week, I thought our middles were strong, but our edge didn’t work as hard.

“Dolphins were great in the second half and we have to get ready now for them.”

Dolphins looking for consistency as they prepare for Magpies

Redcliffe Dolphins swam away from Round 3 of the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup with a win over Brisbane Tigers 30-12 and head into this weekend ready to face Souths Logan Magpies.

The Dolphins reversed their Round 2 form, going from losing to the Tweed Seagulls 32-10 to completing an impressive win over the Tigers.

Coach Jamie Floss will be searching for some positive consistency this week when the Dolphins head home to host the undefeated Magpies.

“We didn’t change much from week two to week three, the score changed, but that was about it,” Floss said.

“It’s finding that consistency within the game, not allowing parts of the game to drift.”

Match : Dolphins v Magpies
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 3:30pm
Venue : Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe
Match broadcasters : Qplus

The Dolphins started well and attacked with venom, with two tries in the first eight minutes through Jacob Laban and Will McCulloch getting them a dream start.

Jayden Alefaio liked the look of this and got in on the act with two tries in six minutes.

“Alefaio is playing out of postion for us and doing a great job, he is normally in the centres but we have him on the wing,” Floss said.

“He’s great at bringing the ball back for us and gets our sets off to a great start.”

Drew Timms filled in at a number of roles and got them all done.

“He’s the heart of this team, he’s a real leader,” Floss said.

This week will be a test for the Dolphins, however, coming up against the red-hot Magpies who posted a resounding 58-6 win in their last game.

The Magpies were led by reliable performers like Blake Mozer, whose football is the made bed of this competition, organised with all the corners tucked in.

Mozer has been guiding the Magpies around well, with Jye Gray and Tim Sielaff-Burns also standouts in the side.

“We will be minimising our mistakes and giving ourselves the best chance to make sure that we are in the game with a great attitude,” Floss said.

“We won’t be intimidated by them, they’re a great team, but we need to be ready to be physical.”

Match : Seagulls v Tigers
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH
Venue : Piggabeen Sports Complex, Tweed Heads

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Tweed Seagulls had the week off in Round 3, while their opponents this weekend, Brisbane Tigers, were tamed by the Dolphins in their 30-12 loss.

The Tigers have had a tough start to the season with two loses, so this week, a positive performance is important to gaining some confidence and move forward.

Match: Jets v Bulls
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2:30pm
Venue : North Ipswich Reserve, Ipswich

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Ipswich Jets lost by six points to Sunshine Coast Falcons last weekend in an outing that showed improvement. Tyler Peckham-Harris was great at fullback for the Jets with 216 metres, while Regan Payne made 25 tackles.

Overall, the Jets controlled the ball well, making more line breaks than the Falcons, but they just couldn’t finish with a win.

The Jets will be looking to make better use of their 32 tackle breaks when they take on the Bulls this weekend.

The Bulls were charging at the Clydesdales last weekend, with a try to Connor Yeates in the second minute. However, they came unstuck when their defence let the Clydesdales score twice before they could add points again.

Bailey Nash scored three tries for the Bulls and was a danger with the ball.

Match  : Cutters v Pride
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 3:30pm
Venue : BB Print Stadium, Mackay

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Cutters came back against the Blackhawks last weekend, but it wasn’t enough to tame the wild Townsville beast that claimed a comprehensive 38-6 win.

Baden Robinson did his best to make some ground with 154 metres and topped the tackle count with 33 tackles in a great effort on a losing team for Mackay.

Mackay just missed too many tackles and will have to get that right this week against the Pride.

The Pride had a great first win over the Capras with Jason Hallie making a giant 246 metres for the Pride with Cain Hastie leading the way with 25 tackles.

Cameron Nelson made a nonstop effort against the Capras, playing the full 70 minutes.

Match: Falcons v Clydesdales
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 4:30pm
Venue : Maroochydore JRL, Sunshine Coast

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Sunshine Coast will be happy with their 24-18 win over Ipswich last weekend. The Falcons sarted well and kept it going to make sure Ipswich couldn’t finish the game over the top of them.

Jayden Smith showed commitment to his tackling art with 33 tackles. Mason Kira was also great in the second row for the Falcons.

Their opposition this weekend is a Clydesdales side that came away from Round 3 with a 34-22 win against Wide Bay Bulls. They dominated the ball use with seven-line breaks and 32 tackle breaks.

On the other side of the ball in defence they missed a low 23 tackles.

Bailey Nash was outstanding with three tries.

Match : WM Seagulls v Bears
ROUND 4 – SUNDAY 20TH MARCH 12:00pm
Venue : BMD Kougari Oval, Brisbane

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Wynnum Manly would be keen to push aside their last round against Souths Logan and will take on Burleigh Bears this weekend with a new plan. The Seagulls just missed too many tackles and couldn’t stop the bleeding.

The Bears will be looking to take their first half defence and second half attack and put them together.

Josiah Pahulu was a ground-making machine, gaining 237 metres for the Bears and Joseph Shannon made two-line breaks.

Burleigh made 53 tackle breaks overall, but missed 70 tackles.

Match: Blackhawks v Capras
ROUND 4 – SUNDAY 20TH MARCH 3:00pm
Venue : Jack Manski Oval, Townsville

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Townsville’s Zac Lamont was a stand-out performer for the Blackhawks last weekend where his kicking game was a strong weapon against the Cutters.

Taking on the Capras this weekend, the Central Queensland side will need to put pressure on Lamont and not let him have all the time he wants to place his kicks perfectly.

The Capras were so close against the Pride, but couldn’t get the job finished.

Matthew Hill climbed a hill with 192 metres and made a line break.

William Lewis, Bailey Cavanough and Jaiden Green really took it to the Pride.

Dolphins sign Panthers young gun Isaiya Katoa

Redcliffe Dolphins have secured the services of Penrith Panthers SG Ball halfback Isaiya Katoa on a three-year deal from 2023 onwards.

Katoa is widely regarded as one of the most talented prospects coming through and is an exciting signing for the Dolphins after they have agreed to terms with several NRL veterans.

The brother of former Bulldogs player Sione Katoa, Isaiya impressed in the Panthers Harold Matthews Cup side in 2021 and has had a brilliant start to the 2022 season in their SG Ball Cup season.

Katoa is held in such high regard that the Dolphins have opted to skip the development contract stage and fast-track him into their NRL top 30 squad when their pre-season training begins in November.

“Isaiya is one of the most sought-after young playmakers in the game, so this is a really big coup for the Dolphins,” said Dolphins Chief Executive Terry Reader in a club statement.

“We have already built significant depth and experience in our forward pack and there is no doubt that this plays a part in enticing young talent to join our squad.

“We recognise the potential Isaiya has and are excited about what he can become working with head coach Wayne Bennett every day.”

While the Dolphins have recruited plenty of experience in premiership winners Jesse and Kenny Bromwich, Felise Kaufusi and Grand Finalist Mark Nicholls.

They have also added some young talent in Jamayne Isaako and James Roberts younger brother Michael.

The Panthers are currently undefeated in the SG Ball competition and Katoa has two tries and two try assists.

Nurturing young talent key to Dolphins’ NRL success

Player pathways specialist Kurt Richards is heading up a team at the Dolphins working with 12 junior clubs to identify and nurture emerging rugby league players.

Richards says it’s not about building a ‘super club’ at Dolphins, instead encouraging rising stars to continue playing at their local club, with their mates, while being part of the Dolphins Pathways Program.

It aims to nurture players from juniors all the way through to NRL, complementing Wayne Bennett’s NRL program in 2023.

Bennett’s passion for implementing such a system has been evident from the moment he took on the top job at the club and is shared by Richards, who has been involved in player development for 20 years.

It’s a journey that he started as a teacher at famed rugby league school Keebra Park High.

He spent 13 years at the Brisbane Broncos, including a stint as assistant coach of the NRL team.

Along the way he has been a vital part of the Queensland Emerging Origin program, coaching the Queensland under-16s and under-18s, and is the Maroons’ current under-19s coach.

“The pathway program is about developing local players and giving them the opportunity to progress right through the academy pathway to play NRL here at home for the Dolphins,” Richards says.

“But we also want to clear up the misconception that you have to be playing with Redcliffe to be part of the pathways program.

“We encourage players in the local community that play for Burpengary or play for North Lakes or Albany Creek to stay and play with their mates. There is a pathway here and you never know when your opportunity will come.”

Inaugural camp for emerging talent

In mid-December, the Dolphins held their first Junior Dolphins Camp for under-14s players across two days. (Check out the photo gallery above)

“We assembled what our recruitment staff considered to be the 15 best players from around the state with a large focus on the local area,” Richards says.

Of the six local boys, three were part of the under-15 Moreton Bay Raiders side – aged 14 years, playing up – which won the Division 1 premiership last year.

The aim was to connect with junior clubs, show them what the Dolphins are all about and identify talent for a new academy.

The Dolphins Academy

The Dolphins Academy will be made up of 15 and 16-year-olds, with 10-12 players contracted initially.

Four local juniors have already been invited to join as a result of their performances at the camp and others are expected to be signed soon.

Underneath that will be opportunities for players to be involved in Dolphins Squads, but not everyone has to play for Redcliffe.

Junior Rep Pathways

“We want them to play for their local clubs but there will be the opportunity to play in a team environment with the under-16 Cyril Connell Cup and under-18 Mal Meninga Cup,” Richards says.

“It’s not about building a super club at the Dolphins but strong clubs in and around the region. There are 12 clubs in the Redcliffe catchment.

We want to support all those clubs and provide opportunities to players.”

He says the camp enabled the Dolphins to prove they have good, experienced people ready to guide and support other clubs and emerging talent.

“There were a few from outside the area, like me, but also people who have been part of the Dolphins for a long time like Mick Roberts (200+ games for the Dolphins).

Former coach John Dixon, Dolphins strength and conditioning coach Gerard Parle and two local coaches,

Barry Berrigan from Redcliffe and Larry Dickson from the Moreton Bay Raiders team,” he says.

Dolphins NRL Coach Wayne Bennett with Dolphins Pathways Manager Kurt Richards (Photo’s : Dolphins and photographer Tristan Croll)

Focus on grassroots footy

Richards says building relationships with junior clubs is key to the academy’s success.

“The Dolphins have made no secret they want to be a development club and develop their own juniors and create pathways from juniors to the NRL.

For the players, it’s the dream of many young boys to play in the NRL.

We can’t guarantee that, but we can guide and support that dream on and off their field,” he says.

The academy will also work closely with clubs and schools to help young players map out a ‘plan b’, because injury and other obstacles can quickly dash an NRL dream.

“We have experience staff, good people to help be role models for these young players and we’re continuing to build that team,” he says.

NRL Futures

Performances on the field are just part of the focus, with a strong social, education and wellbeing component as well to help young players make good decisions.

There’s also the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches of all time – Wayne Bennett.

Richards says, without an NRL team in 2022, Bennett will be on the ground with young players this year and will remain a strong influence when the Dolphins enter the national competition next year.

He says dual international and former Maroon Ben Te’o will also be a positive role model, with plenty of life experience to share as well.

“I encourage young players to get out there and play for their local clubs because the Dolphins will be out there looking in 2022,” he says.

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Local sport. Followed categories will be added to My News.

These are some of the Redcliffe catchment juniors NRL new-comers the Dolphins simply must look to sign.

NRL’s 17th team will be looking for several marquee players to parade as their flagship players for season 2023.

But what about their juniors? The region from Albany Creek, Caboolture and west to Dayboro and Kilcoy districts has also been one of the finest junior catchments for Redcliffe, with past champions Petero Civoniceva, Troy Lindsay, Peter Leis, Trevor Benson, Ian Graham and Ken McCrohon just a handful of elite junior old boys.

Redcliffe SHS students Jak Goulding, Matt Bennett and Jack Cameron. Picture, John Gass

Redcliffe SHS alone, for example, has produced Daly Cherry-Evans, Josh McGuire and Civoniceva, while the Bribie Island region has produced Broncos champion Matt Gillett and grand final centre Jack Reed. Can you imagine if they had worn a Dolphins NRL jersey?

So who are some of the young gun Redcliffe juniors of today?

Kallum Weatherall-Stacey:

A winger or fullback, this kid has speed to burn – and plenty of it.

Ben Te Kura:

The Broncos have this 200cm tall edge backrower signed – for the moment. The Wavell SHS student is the type of kid Redclffe should get when he is off contract.

Jack Cameron:

The Redcliffe SHS hooker has been blooming of late and had a tremendous Gee Cup campaign.

Keep a close watch on this rookie.

Michael Waqa as a junior playing for Albany Creek (AAP Image/Regi Varghese)

Michael Waqa:

Now here’s a wildcard name for you. Big, strong, mobile forward who remains unsigned – for now.

Mitchell Rogers:

An extremely talented dummy half who is on the Bulldogs raider.

Karl Oloapu:

Possibly the best out of the lot of them. A Redcliffe junior, Oloapu is a brilliant half or five-eight who had a strong season for Wavell SHS in the Langer Trophy where he made the Team of the Year.

Redcliffe SHS hooker Jack Cameron, centre, and his skipper Matt Bennett, right.

Matthew Bennett:

Redcliffe SHS captain courageous, Bennett is a no frills front rower with a big motor who does the simple things right. He also has a handy front row partner in Sefo Faatuono.

Jacob Taulani:

A raw, left edge ball runner who will have talent scouts opening their match day programs to double check the spelling of his name.

Joseph Pouniu is originally from North Lakes Kangaroos (AAP Image/Regi Varghese)

Joseph and Brian Pouniu:

Joseph is a towering, 195cm tall front row and backrower who has been courted by the Titans, while his brother is an equally exciting prospect – but too young (14 years) to be signed to the NRL for the moment.

Dre Pakeho and Ben Uini.

Pakeho played 16s in 2021 and Uini in the under 15s. Both are big talents who have talent scouts watching closely.

Thomas Lunney:

Another outstanding backrow talent from the region.

Mason Kira:

Kira is a tough as teak lock originally from the Sunshine Coast.

William Sologinkin:

Speaking of tough, did someone say Sologinkin’s name?

He played up an age group for Redcliffe and is one tough cookie.

Karl Oloapu playing Cyril Connell Challenge. Picture: Kevin Farmer

Arthur Fitness:

Fitness is another prospect in the under 16s.

The son of former Queensland cricket wicket keeper Gavin Fitness – who is the personal batting coach of Chris Lynn – Fitness is a national playmaker with vision.

He is developing under the eye of ex-Redcliffe grand final hero Mick Roberts at Wavell SHS.

Also keep a watch on Jaedon Wellington (front row), Sebastyan Jack (half), Tuhii Ratana-Leef (No.13), Jonathan Maller (five-eight), Jak Goulding and tackling machine Drew Timms, a coaches dream who works hard, then works even harder in the next set of six tackles.

Redcliffe Dolphins junior and Redcliffe SHS student Jak Goulding said the Dolphins elevation into the NRL would allow local kids to remain local while aspiring to play NRL.

“Those boys who have come through the club since under 7s, and for boys like myself coming to the club and seeing the strong culture and what it means to wear the jersey, it’s certainly a great opportunity to be able to stay here for longer and do what we all want to do at this club,’’ said junior Jak Goulding.

Redcliffe junior Ben Te Kura, signed by the Broncos, is the type of talent the Dolphins produce.

Redcliffe junior Ben Te Kura, signed by the Broncos, is the type of talent the Dolphins produce.

Current Redcliffe SHS captain and Dolphins Meninga Cup prop Matthew Bennett added. “Seeing what Redcliffe Dolphins can provide for many kids passionate about footy and has provided for existing players, it will definitely inspire more kids to want to play for Redcliffe and be apart of the experience.’’
