QLD City and Country share spoils

Queensland Under 17 representative pathway matches between City and Country finished in a deadlock over the weekend.

City won the girls’ match 40-12, before Country hit back to claim the boys’ clash 36-8.

Incredibly, both City and Country accumulated 48 points across the two games at Burleigh, recording the exact same number of tries and goals.

In the girls’ match, City prop Sianah Misa scored two second-half tries in a powerhouse display.

City led 18-4 at half-time and fought off a gallant Country comeback which looked threatening following tries to Diaz Bowen and Hayley Wainwright.

In the boys’ match, Country fullback Derek Ahwang was in scintillating form, crossing for four tries in the 28-point win.

Country led 28-0 at half-time, but City refused to back down in the second half with Jordan Tuuga-Stevenson and Toetu Misipati Toetu both crossing the line.

The NSWRL Under 19s Women’s representative clash between Country and City turned into an unforgettable epic on Sunday afternoon at Jubilee Stadium, with City eventually emerging 28-26 victors after a dramatic golden point finish.

Country struck first blood in the third minute, when centre Tyra Ekepati pounced on an intercept 40 metres out and showed a clean pair of heels, racing 60 metres untouched to dive under the posts.

It was the perfect start for the Country side, with Logan Fletcher adding the easy extras to take a 6-0 lead.

City didn’t take long to answer. A strong set led by their forward pack laid the platform before fullback Kayla Henderson produced a moment of magic, flicking a pass out wide to winger Kiana Vatubua, who crossed in the corner.

The conversion attempt missed, keeping Country narrowly ahead 6-4.

With momentum swinging, it was Country who hit back next.

Front-rower Bronte Wilson sliced through the defensive line, stepped around the fullback and sold a dummy before diving under the posts for a stunning solo effort. Fletcher made no mistake from in front to extend the lead to 12-4.

City stuck to their plan and again used their middle forwards to march upfield. Halfback Logan Lemusu delivered a pinpoint cut-out ball to Danielle Seckold, who finished expertly on the right edge to keep her side in it.

Moments later, it was deja vu for Country’s defence. Siulolo Richter surged forward with a barnstorming run, gaining 20 metres before Lemusu again targeted the right edge. The ball popped up perfectly for Seckold, who strolled over for her second try in as many minutes.

With the conversion nailed from out wide, City took the lead for the first time, 14-12.

Impact player Felila Fakalelu made her presence felt off the bench, powering through tackles and pushing City into attacking territory.

Just as it looked like City would head into the break on top, Country sparked back into life with two sharp sets. Shifting left, hooker Tori Shipton linked with Evie McGrath, who quickly tipped it on to Indie Bostock.

The winger did the rest, diving over in the 29th minute to reclaim the lead.

Fletcher’s sideline conversion attempt as the siren sounded was waved away, leaving Country ahead 16-14 at the break.

After a back-and-forth first half, City wasted no time finding points after the break. Dummy half Ava Jones delivered a looping cut-out ball to Kiana Vatubua, who did well to control it and crash over in the corner for her second of the day.

With the conversion from the sideline left to Kiara McGregor, she curled it beautifully between the uprights to extend City’s lead to 20-16.

Country found joy down their right edge, shifting wide to Koffi Brookfield, who juggled the pass before slamming the ball down to level the scores once again. The conversion attempt drifted wide, keeping it locked at 20-all with just over 10 minutes left.

The final minutes of regular time turned frantic as both sides raised the intensity. A knock-on from Country in their own half opened the door for City, and a follow-up penalty only increased the pressure.

City didn’t waste the opportunity, Ava Jones, having already set up one earlier in the half, darted out of dummy half, bounced off defenders and found a gap to slide over and give City a crucial lead with five minutes remaining. McGregor added the extras, making it 26-20.

With the game slipping away, Country needed something special, and it came in the dying seconds.

A high tackle on Tyra Ekepati gifted Country one last penalty. With one minute on the clock, they marched downfield and launched their final attack.

Danielle Seckold released Elise Simpson down the left touchline, and the winger took off on a stunning 50-metre run.

Weaving in and out of defenders, Simpson chose to go herself, veering closer to the posts to give her side the best chance.

It was a miracle play, and the conversion from Fletcher was just as clutch, sailing over to level the scores at 26-26 as the siren sounded.

That try sent the match into extra time, where fatigue set in and both teams dug deep. Mistakes crept in, cramps hit tired bodies, and both sides had their chances to ice the game.

Simpson nearly produced a match-winning double, only for it to be called back for offside, a moment that gave City a lifeline.

With no winner found in extra time, the match rolled into golden point.

Both teams attempted field goals, but it was Kiara McGregor, who became the women of the hour, From 20 metres out, just to the right of the posts, she struck it sweetly and watched it sail over the black dot, sealing victory in one of the most gripping Country v City clashes.

Girls teams named for Queensland Under 17 City versus Country clash

Queensland Rugby League has today announced the City and Country teams for the Under 17 girls match on September 24.

The clash at Moreton Daily Stadium kicks off an entertaining four-game program that also features the Queensland Under 17 City versus Country boys match, as well as the Hastings Deering Colts and Hostplus Cup grand finals.

Former Queensland and Australian representative Deanna Turner returns to coach the talented City team for a second year.

Turner is highly regarded for her work with the state’s emerging talent involved in Queensland’s female pathway programs.

Guiding the fortunes of the Country line-up is Amanda Ohl, one of the BMD Premiership’s leading coaches.

Ohl this year took the Central Queensland Capras to the grand final of the state’s premier women’s competition, where it took a stunning final minute try by the North Queensland Gold Stars to deny Central Queensland.

Both City and Country teams will feature numerous players who took part in the Harvey Norman Under 19 competition this year.

Players who have excelled in community competitions have also been identified by the QRL performance and pathways team led by Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons head coach Tahnee Norris.

Norris said there would be some great young talent on display in both sides.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how the two teams match up on the day,” Norris said.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for all players to learn from the camp environment during the week, and further develop their own game and skills leading into next year’s Harvey Norman Under 19s and BMD Premiership competitions.

“We’re proud to have a genuine pathway through our representative program and hopefully we’ll see future Maroons come through from this group of talented players.”

Queensland City U17s v Queensland Country U17s

Queensland’s best emerging under 17 talent – girls and boys – will be put on show in Queensland City versus Queensland Country games on October 2.

QRL senior pathways and performance manager Brett Jones said the representative opportunity was built on the success of the 2019 under 16 City versus Country fixture and was an integral part of Queensland Rugby League’s pathways.

“The opportunity to bring together the state’s best male and female talent is critical to ensuring the next generations of Queensland talent is exposed to the expectations and demands of representative football,” Jones said.

“It is the representative entry point for players across Queensland and the foundation of the Queensland men’s and women’s State of Origin pathway.”

What are the teams?

When is it?

The program, hosted by the Queensland Academy of Sport, will be held between September 28 and October 2
The two games will be played on October 2;

Queensland Under 17 City Girls v Queensland Under 17 Country Girls will kick off at 12.50pm

Queensland Under 17 City Boys v Queensland Under 17 Country Boys will kick off at 2.20pm

The two games will be livestreamed on Kayo Freebies, QRL.com.au and on the QRL Facebook page

Who is eligible?

Players must turn 16 or 17 before December 31, 2021

Players must be eligible to represent Queensland and will be required to return and sign eligibility document before being selected
Am I eligible for the City or Country team?

Eligibility will be determined through a players Origin eligibility and be based on where they played rugby league prior to the age of 13

Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich Leagues will align to City

All other leagues and clubs will align to Country

What is the selection process?

Boys

The male selection process is led by the QRL’s pathway and performance team, with the support of NRL recruitment teams
Players can be selected from any league or competition from across Queensland; the Cyril Connell Challenge and Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup competitions are key competitions the selection panel have monitored

In addition, the Queensland School Sport Rugby League (QSSRL) competitions and events provide further statewide opportunities for players

Girls

The female selection process is underpinned by regional carnivals for under 17 players in the North, Central and South East regions

Selectors were appointed by the QRL pathways and performance team to observe the carnivals and support final selection of teams
When will teams be announced

Eligibility checks will commence August 20, with final teams announced by August 27

What will the players experience?

The camp will focus on core skills and supporting players to understand their areas of strength and areas of opportunity aligned to the Queensland player toolkit

Develop self-awareness of the work ethic and skill required to perform at every stage of the pathway if they were to play for Queensland at some point in the future

The purpose of the camp is to expose players to the standards and values expected of Queensland representative players
Players will be provided access to past Origin players who will assist the coaching team as mentors throughout the camp
Who are the coaching and support staff?

Kurt Richards and Ben Jeffries have been appointed program coaching directors and will oversee the training programs for boys and girls, respectively

John Mitchell will lead the physical performance team and be supported by Ben Heidenreich through the QRL partnership with All Sports Physiotherapy, to provide best practice management of players during camp
