NSWCIS win ASSRL u15 Championships

NSW Combined Independent Schools have claimed back-to-back ASSRL Under-15 boys championships after a tense 18-10 win over Queensland Maroon in the final.

While it was a classic final encounter, which leant into all the feelings of a State of Origin showdown, there was one passage of play that defined the NSWCIS glory.

Camped on their own line in defence midway through the first half, NSWCIS front rower Cameron Makey pulled off a remarkable try-saving tackle, holding rival Christian Rivers up over the line before muscling him back into the field of play.

His effort was backed up by another try-saver on the last tackle.

But it was on the ensuing set, when five-eighth Talen Risati put in a booming 40-20, which started on his own 30 metre line, which truly turned the contest.

NSWCIS scored the first try of the game off the following play the ball, through big boppa Isaiah Shock, and never looked back.

Risati and dummy-half Ashton Large put in five-star performances to power their side to victory.

Queensland Maroon refused to give up the fight, and managed to get themselves back in the game with a try to Kingston Seve to head to the sheds 12-4 down at halftime.

NSWCIS maintained their advantage throughout the second half, and looked to have pushed ahead on two more occasions except for the final pass floating forward out of the hands.

The errors almost became costly for the side when Ignatius Park College halfback Riley Carbone split the defence to bring Queensland Maroon back within two points.

But that was the closest they would come to the title, with NSWCIS lock forward Sam Polley streaming through a gap in the final minutes to seal the national title.

Queensland have claimed the inaugural u16 girls ASSRL national championship after a gutsy 28-16 win over NSWCHS.

CHS started off well, securing a try in the opening minutes from consistent scorer Brandy Simpson.

But from there it was all Queensland, who scored two tries from Deleni Paitai and Okalani Compton for a solid 16-4 half time advantage.

It only took three minutes into the second half to add more points with Shalom Sauaso finding space for another try.

CHS we’re sloppy in possession, letting the Queenslanders gain solid meters in counterattacks.

CHS started their comeback midway though the second half with Koffi Brookfield ploughing through to the line to get the deficit down to 12 points.

Sauaso got her second try almost immediately after and despite CHS’s never say die attitude, Queensland took the win 28-16.

Boys Pool B Final – First Nations Goannas v Western Australia

The Goannas have clinched the John Allen Trophy as Under-15 Boys Pool B winners at the ASSRL Nationals after a golden-point thriller.

After the Goanna’s 40-6 thrashing of Western Australia in the pool stage, no one expected such a close battle in the Pool B grand final.

The Goannas appeared down and out in the final minutes, before a piece of magic from centre Jimi Kusu sent the match into extra time.

Up stepped the man of the moment, Goannas halfback Callum Miskell, who threw caution to the wind and barrelled his way across the stripe to secure a 20-16 win.

It was a seesawing contest, with the two sides trading blows down the stretch.

WA’s Carter Nikita opened the scoring just seven minutes in, but the Goanna’s Ashton Allen responded just two minutes later to even the scoring.

The Goannas went a man down after fullback Kyron Nixon-Croaker was sent to the bin for a dangerous lifting tackle.

WA wasted no time taking advantage as Kyron Arthy gave his side an 8-4 lead at half time.

The Goannas struck straight away in the second half with Jerome Murgha once again levelling the scores.

Two consecutive tries from WA, including a very sloppy play for Michael Turukawa, gave WA a comfortable two try buffer with around 10 minutes to go.

Nixon-Croaker made up for his sin-bin by scoring a try and putting the Indigenous side back in contention before Kusu struck in the shadows of full time.

U16 Girls Third-Place Playoff: Victoria v NSWCIS

NSWCIS have claimed third place in the inaugural under 16 girls ASSRL national championship after downing Victoria 26-4.

It took no time at all for CIS to gain the advantage with Mia Vaotu’ua scoring a try on the team’s first possession.

Victoria were looking hesitant with the ball but gained more confidence through the half.

Both teams struggled to make any real impact for the rest of the opening half, though Victoria was gifted some chances that they couldn’t capitalise on.

CIS once again opened the scoring in the second half courtesy of Talea Tonga, but Victoria were quick to strike back.

Eboni Heurea sparked a comeback midway through the second half with a solid try right under the posts.

It was short lived, with CIS another three more tries before the buzzer to take the win 26-4.

Grand Finals Preview

NSW Combined Independent Schools’ star dummy-half Ashton Large has sent an ominous warning to ASSRL Nationals grand finals rival Queensland Maroon on the eve of the decider.

“We are keen for it, we will be ready and we’re coming for Queensland,” Large said after toppling NSWCHS in the semifinal.

The Scots College star, who is part of the Wests Tigers pathways, will be chasing his second-straight ASSRL Under-15 boys title after being part of the winning NSWCIS squad last year in Queensland.

He is not alone in that quest with Keone Anitelea-Tsioussis and Talen Risati also backing up from last year’s national title-winning squad in the big game against Queensland Maroon.

The Under-15 Boys Championship decider will headline a huge final day at the ASSRL Nationals in Port Macquarie, which kicks off with an Under-16 girls third-place playoff at 9am.

Queensland will also feature in the inaugural Under-16 Girls grand final when they clash with fellow undefeated rivals, NSW Combined High Schools, while the First Nations Goannas will put their undefeated streak on the line against Western Australia in the Boys Plate Final.

Large has been one of the players of the tournament, and said he was proud of the way his side had bounced back after an early round loss to Queensland Maroon on Monday.

“I thought we started rusty in the first two games, but (in the semi-final) we completed our sets and stuck to our structure and we played a lot better,” Large said.

“The boys put in a big effort. We just stick to our structure, kept doing what we did. I am so proud.”

The Queensland Maroon side, which has combined an impressive engine room up front with skilled playmakers out the back, has been the team to beat all tournament and will likely enter the grand final favourites.

The inaugural girls decider could come down to a coin flip – with both Queensland and NSWCHS topping their respective groups with undefeated runs through the tournament.

The girls from the Sunshine State were dominant knocking off NSWCIS 30-0 in the semi-final, while their NSW counterparts had little trouble getting past Victoria.

Queensland lock forward and tournament highlight reel, Shalom Sauaso, said she knew her side had to find another gear in the grand final.

“I think I am feeling nervous now we are going onto the big game,” she said.

“I think we need to work a bit better at getting depth in our play. We know NSW is such a talented team, they know how to shift the ball side to side and they are really good in their communication. We know we need to go up a little bit with our work.”

NSW CHS dummy-half Koffi Brookfield said her side were excited to play in the momentous game after coming together well over the past week.

“It feels awesome to be in a grand final, especially at a tournament like this. It is our first one so it is pretty exciting,” she said.

“I knew our team could do it and we have definitely gelled. It was definitely a good experience and we knew we could get here with our teamwork.”

While a defensive master class ensured NSW CHS picked up good reward for their week’s work, Victoria arguably came up with the best result.

NSWCHS have claimed third in the U15 boys tournament after an entertaining grudge match against Queensland White on Thursday.

It was a tough battle, with CHS making the most of the chances they created to win 10-0.

Callum Elsley was the only try scorer, producing two stunners while his team kept Queensland scoreless.

It was the only match where Queensland White failed to score a point and was a frustrating end to their championship.

BOYS – ACT 52 d NT 10

The ACT left their best performance for last as they demolished Northern Territory in their final ASSRL U15 boys national championships match.

The massive 52-10 scoreline was highlighted by a hat-trick for winger Uhila Tai.

The NT mounted a small comeback midway through the second half when they scored two tries, but it was shortlived.

The win is the only one for the ACT this week, while NT head home without a victory.

BOYS: Victoria 24 d NSWCCC 22

Victoria and NSWCCC have put on a classic for their final U15 boys match in Port Macquarie.

Victoria’s narrow 12-10 halftime lead was quickly hunted down by CCC, who jumped out to a 22-12 lead midway through the second half.

But the Vics refused to give up, snatching back the lead 24-22 with a try in the last minute off a grubber kick.

They then had to agonisingly watch a NSWCCC penalty shot at goal in the dying seconds drift wide before securing the win.

Coach Hamish Pearce said it was a fantastic showing from his side.

“Being a traditional pool B team, it was really good to come up against a side like that and see where we’re at,” Pearce said.

“I think the effort they put in today was the best game of the week.”

GIRLS: NSWCCC 46 d NT 0

They may have been a disappointing championship, but NSWCCC have ended their girls U16 ASSRL national campaign on a massive high.

Their 46-0 demolition of Northern Territory featured eight tries from seven different players. Summer Dowell contributed a double.

Emily Dietrich was in great form with the boot, kicking seven goals and earning her team’s player of the match award.

It was a brutal ending to the tournament for Northern Territory, who head home without a win.

GIRLS – WA 14 d ACT 12

Western Australia have produced a stunning second half comeback to claim an impressive two-point victory over the ACT in a tense U16 girls encounter on Thursday.

The ACT had the upper hand in the first half following two tries to Ella van dam Heuval and Reese Paunovic.

However, the second half was all Western Australia, but a missed conversion on the second try of the half seemed to seal the win for ACT.

But the WA side we’re not done, and a final minute try to Kylah-Rey Tuheke Kupa stole them the win 14-12.

The calm before the grand final storm is set to descend over the ASSRL National Championships in Port Macquarie on Thursday.

As teams in grand final deciders prepare for their big moment, the remaining sides will have a chance to shoot for the minor placings on field at Port Macquarie Regional Stadium.

Five games will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, headlined by the Boys Under-15 third-place playoff between Queensland White and NSW CHS.

Both sides will be licking their wounds after falling short in Wednesday’s semi-finals, despite both sides landing the first blow int heir respective matches.

NSW CHS, who had finished the pool stage undefeated, managed to score an early try against NSW CIS, before they failed to find the chalk again across the 60 minutes.

Queensland White fared similarly, scoring first against their Queensland Maroon counterparts, before falling too far behind on the scoreboard.

Queensland White will be confident they can roll with a bit of momentum after mounting a late fightback in their semi-final loss and showing they have the talent to threaten the top teams.

The two sides have met once before during the tournament, when a Tristan Ross double helped NSWCHS to a thrilling six-point win.

Day six of the ASSRL Nationals will also feature crossover clashes in the Under-15 Boys and Under-16 Girls tournaments as teams battle for the minor placings.

Gold Coast juggernauts Palm Beach Currumbin handled the pressure of a frantic final minute in a come-from-behind championship win.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS wrote another milestone moment for the school’s time capsule with a rousing Langer Trophy premiership win over Ipswich SHS at Langlands Park.

Like a boa constrictor creeping toward its prey, PBC exerted tremendous second half pressure to win the battle for field position and claim a 16-12 come-from-behind victory.

A second-half double for Palm Beach winger Sunny Kama all-but sealed victory for the Gold Coast nursery before a frantic final two minutes.

Ipswich managed to wriggle free of their rivals vice-like grip late in the second half when centre LJ Nonu created a try for his captain Oliva Iaulualo which cut the deficit to just four points.

A one-on-one steal on the final hooter gave the reigning champions one final shot at pulling off the unthinkable.

But Palm Beach held on for dear life, forcing the ball over the touchline to kick off massive celebrations.

Palm Beach’s Zane Harrison saved a try late with his cover defence, and his goal kicking also proved the difference.

What a match it was.

Ipswich led 6-0 at halftime on the back of a five star performance from rough and tumble winger Alton Naiyep, scoring in typically robust fashion.

On a normal day three or four more tries would have been scored, but not on grand final day as both sides scrambled impressively on their goal lines.

Creedence Donovan on Naiyep and Jac Finigan on Keisaia Su’A saved tries for PBC, while Naiyep returned serve to deny Donovan and Nonu grimly halted PBC spearhead Sam Stephenson.

It was a rollercoaster opening salvo, which set the tone for a thrilling finish.

Palm Beach Currumbin will have little time to savour victory ahead of a Phil Hall Cup showdown next Wednesday against Mackay’s St Patrick’s College.

Preview: PBC, Ipswich to clash in ‘pressure’ cooker grand final

“Who handles the pressure best on grand final day will win the title.”

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS coach Tim Maccan is certainly speaking from experience.

Maccan’s Reds will confront Ipswich SHS on Wednesday in a replay of last year’s Langer Trophy decider. Ipswich took the title in 2022 and went ont to be crowned national champions by beating Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

“We have never, ever had to deal with being the team everyone comes after and, at different times, we have not managed that really well.

“We have been inconsistent, but I am really proud of what the boys have done in the last two weeks to manage the pressure of the situations.’’

Last weekend, Tom Weaver (class of 2021) made his NRL debut for the Gold Coast – and he was one of six starting NRL halves from PBC SHS who played across the round.

The others were Tom Dearden (Cowboys), Cody Walker (South Sydney), Toby Sexton (Canterbury), Jamal Fogarty (Raiders) and Jahrome Hughes (Storm).

That is an All-Star cast, but Harrison and McConnell don’t have to live up to those past players because just being themselves is good enough and has got PBC into another decider.

Watching Harrison play is like seeing patches of Weaver and Josh Lynn (2021-22) on rewind.

His control, his attacking kicks and the way he plays to his ability is impressive.

McConnell has a little more flair, someone who can take the game on with his own spritely runs, trigger an edge movement, as he did for Baylen Donald to create a try against Marsden, or add to support play down the middle.

He was dominant after Harrison missed the opening three rounds due to injury.

Saunders has been a revelation this season with his dummy half play.

Like PBC SHS hookers from earlier this decade, Oksar Bryant and Tanu Nona, Saunders has a long pass from the ruck which opens up the field for his halfback Zane Harrison, while also giving his No. 7 a split second more time.

But he can scamper away from dummy half against tiring defenders, or run and engage the ruck defenders before unloading.

Throw a roaming Puru into the fray and you have a potent ruck cocktail.

Puru, a fullback, returned from injury in the semi-final against Marsden SHS and aided PBC SHS’s running game and speed with the ball around the ruck.

He is a smaller body, which makes him a harder target for big middle forwards to nail.

Tyler Peckham-Harris and Lesayne Tuiasau (Ipswich SHS)

Last year Ipswich had Gabriel Satrick and Tommy Luhrman (hookers), this year they have Peckham-Harris and Tuiasau.

Peckham-Harris will start at hooker and Tuiasau at prop, but Tuiasau is quick, fearless and can fill in at hooker to allow for Peckham-Harris to inject himself elsewhere.

They are a dangerous combination and with Sam Martin coming off the bench, Ipswich will be well equipped to combat the tricks of Saunders.

Alton Naiyep (Ipswich SHS)

Perhaps the best finisher in the competition. Naiyep, a Manly-signed winger gets Ipswich onto the front foot with his carries, and is safe under the high ball. He will instil confidence in his teammates just by lurking on the edge.

Oliva Iaulualo (Ipswich)

The mobile second rower is capable of anything. He can assist by breaking the line and getting an offload away or score with sheer strength. Iaulualo is the full package and without jinxing him, he is made for the big moments.

A moment of brilliance from Xavier Kirk proved the difference as Ipswich held their nerve to beat Palm Beach Currumbin in a repeat of last year’s Langer Trophy decider. Relive all the action.

Games can be decided by moments – and for Ipswich SHS, it was a moment of brilliance from winger Xavier Kirk that landed them a 16-14 victory over Palm Beach Currumbin.

The Year 12 right wing, who was deadly in Ipswich’s champion Langer Reserves team last year, will no doubt be replaying that moment in his head.

It was the final play of the first half when Kirk caught a cross field kick before scoring just shy of the dead ball line.

It was Ipswich’s final try in a thrilling game where both teams scored three times.

One conversion was the difference.

The contest was absorbing in the first half, with high-tempo footy being showcased from both sides.

Ipswich shot out to a 10-0 lead after 10 minutes, but PBC quickly drew level courtesy of a Bailey McConnell try and try assist to winger Creedence Donovan.

McConnell’s energy, step and draw-and-pass was vital for PBC in the opening stages.

The 36th minute proved the game changer when the high-flying Kirk went aerial to pluck and plant a Brandon Tikinau cross field kick.

It was magical, and elevated Ipswich to a six-point advantage.

Earlier, Tyler Peckham-Harris got Ipswich off to a flyer with a charge down try off kicker Zane Harrison. Then, Shaye Faa’aoga found Kirk who made it 10-0.

A quick play the ball from LJ Nonu and a short side pop-pass from Faa’aoga put the small, but electric winger in.

McConnell dazzled on the back of metres made by Baylen Donald and Jac Finigan and PBC were still well in the hunt at the break.

In the second half, nerves crept in and the high-intensity of the clash resulted in errors both ways.

With 12 minutes left, flame-haired Donald scored, leaving it up to Harrison to equalise.

It was a tough kick 15 metres in from the sideline and Harrison, who had been creating plays all game, must have been exhausted. He missed and that was the end of the scoring.

Despite an Ethan Schultz and Sunny Kama-inspired final spurt for PBC, Ipswich came away two-point-victors.

PBC bounce back to take Walters Cup clash in style

The Palm Beach Currumbin Reds left the North Ipswich Reserve happy campers after a 44-4 success over Stretton State College.

After suffering their first loss of the season to Redcliffe SHS last week, the Reds played with vigour and a point to prove.

And prove it they did when second rower Nelson Makaafi scored to put the cherry on top a convincing 40-point-victory.

Quick enough to be a back, the supporting Makaafi cleared away for PBC’s final try after prop Ashton Hure, goalkicking halfback Marley McLaren and headgeared Ned Tanner combined to go from one end to the other.

PBC had a clear size advantage, but that didn’t deter Stretton from confronting them hard and fast in defence.

Stretton were brave, with Bailey Vang the chief organiser out of dummy-half. The closest they got was 6-4 early, but quickly PBC found their groove.

Halves Taj Lateo and McLaren were classy playmakers.

After the likes of Cruz Dangerfield, Kwinn Wolf and Brodie Sanders made ground up the middle, the two halves provided good ball to their edge finishers.

PREVIEW

Two of the Langer Trophy’s best attacking weapons will come face-to-face as Ipswich State High hosts Palm Beach Currumbin in Round 5 of the elite schoolboys competition.

Both sides enter the clash with only one loss this season and off the back of confidence-boosting wins last week.

Ipswich proved too hard to handle against fourth-placed Mabel Park last week, while Palm Beach Currumbin scored their second win of the season against Redcliffe State High.

So this could be another thriller in what is shaping up to be the competition’s closest finish in years.

While both sides possess some of the toughest forward packs in the competition, the blockbuster clash could be decided by the boys out wide.

Palm Beach centre Sam Stephenson is rolling off the back of a national championships campaign for Queensland, but could meet his match in exciting Ipswich centre LJ Nonu.

Both players possess a strong running game, and have shown an ability to power over the top of their opposite number this season.

It could truly be a battle of the irresistable force against an immovable object.

Also keep an eye on Ipswich SHS hooker Tyler Peckham-Harris going up against William Saunders. Both boys have the ability to change a game in an instant.

There will also be a battle upfront between PBC’s Jett Jackson and Baylen Donald who will have prop Oliva Iaulualo and second rower Jack Laing to deal with.

Keebra Park were given quite a scare as Wavell produced their best performance of the season to nearly pull off a Langer Trophy upset.

Wavell SHS produced their best performance of the season, but it was Keebra Park SHS who prevailed in a thriller.

Keebra Park SHS won 16-8, surviving a spirited Wavell effort, which included a dramatic surge late in the second half.

Down 16-4, Wavell winger Carlos Ka scored a sensational try, snatching the ball from the night sky after a towering bomb across the field from his classy halfback Zac Herdegen. That try reduced the margin to 16-8.

Herdegen then sliced through minutes later, sprinting 20m and throwing a dummy.

He looked certain to score, but he lost his balance as he was headed toward the posts.

Earlier in the half, Keebra Park had extended their margin to 16-4 after a glorious ball from Austin Marsters found his centre, Xavier Tauaifaiga, who scored.

It was a good win by Keebra SHS given the improved execution of Wavell and the unavailability of star halfback Ryder Williams.

Earlier, Jesse Soric delivered Keebra a 10-4 lead at the break with two thrusts on the eve of halftime.

A replacement for Williams, Soric capitalised on Keebra’s last-gasp forward surge late in the half to put his edge forward Jett Bryce into a gap.

While Bryce was tackled by Wavell centre Keyarn Pene, he was able to play-the-ball quickly and Soric, looping around to the blind side, blasted over to score.

Wavell winger Riley Jenkins had a busy debut, scoring the first try of the game and then putting his body in front of his opposite, Zyroam Herlihy, who went within a whisker of scoring for Keebra.

Wavell had started smartly, controlling the ball and giving energetic hooker Harrison Hill chances to shine as the starting dummy half.

They also controlled possession and with Herdegen’s smart kicking game, Wavell were playing their best football of the season.

But Keebra Park’s power forwards were the foundation of their reply, recapturing the lead 6-4, and extending it to 10-4 at the break.

Walters Cup thriller as late conversion seals draw

The battle of the fullbacks finished in a draw and so did the match, with Wavell SHS scoring in the last minute to snatch a 20-20 draw.

Wavell halfback Timahna Tandy kicked a conversion 20 seconds from fulltime – from the sideline – after his centre, Devine Timu, had scored in the corner.

One minute earlier Keebra had scored what looked the winning try by halfback Jai Bilish.

However, Wavell interchange forward Payten Gifford stole possession back for Wavell, giving his side one last throw of the dice.

It was a wonderful game featuring Wavell fullback Sangstar Figota and Keebra Park No.1 David Bryenton showing x-factor skills.

Both Figota and his five-eighth, Azariah Toki-Matauri, who is another big gun, provided the horse power leading up to Wavell recapturing the lead, 14-10, into the second half when centre Tremaine Courteney crossed.

In the first half, Figota also made a break from nothing to put his team into position for its second try.

With limited chances Bryenton’s footwork and speed was effortless for Keebra, and it was his half break which also positioned Keebra for its first try of the second half by halfback Jai Bilish.

This was after Bryenton brilliantly scored in the first half.

Bilish’s try 12 minutes from the end enabled Keebra Park to poke its nose level with Wavell – 14-14 – and then Bilish’s second try four minutes from fulltime looked like it had won the game for his side.

Wavell forward Eethan Laga’aia was also an impact player both in defence and with his carries, while Keebra Park prop Christian Rivers finished strongly.

Earlier in the match, Keebra Park scored first down a crowded blindside when centre Kendrix Marsh squeezed over in traffic.

However, Wavell got into their groove with power running and ball control, putting halfback Timahna Tandy into good attacking positions.

Once he ran himself to score, and on another occasion he drove a bomb toward his winger who tapped back inside for centre Devine Timu to cross.

PREVIEW

Wavell SHS students will be inspired by the jerseys they will wear designed by Indigenous students when they confront dangerous Keebra Park on Wednesday.

To celebrate NAIDOC 2023, Wavell’s proud first VIII will be wearing Indigenous jersey designed by their classmates.

Students personal handywork retains Wavell’s traditional school colours, while incorporating beautiful Indigneous artwork in the mid-drift and then bright, earthy colours snaking up the jersey to the neck line.

Wavell coach Paul Stanley said Wavell’s first two loses were “below the standards we set for ourselves’’.

But last week effort was not in question, it was execution, but the signs were positive.

“The players know what needs to change on the field, it’s up to us to get the job done,” coach Stanley said.

A try on the final siren to flying winger Mataio Tapau-Bon stole a late victory for St Brendan’s after a back-and-forth slugfest against rivals The Cathedral College.

The flying winger showed his extreme turn of foot to scorch defenders and dive on a Tommy Green grubber with less than two minutes to go to seal an 8-6 win for the St Brendan’s side.

It will be a bitter pill to swallow for The Cathedral College, who had fought valiantly to repel their heavyweight rivals for most of the 60 minutes and had gone ahead after a scintillating sideline conversion from dummy-half Zac Bateman.

The rivalry between St Brendan’s and The Cathedral College is one of the biggest in Queenslajnd school footy and this match proved exactly why.

Both schools came out all guns blazing – with the two forward packs not willing to give an inch to their rivals.

But it was the individual brilliance of halfback Tommy Green trhat would break the deadlock, with the crafty no. 7 fooling the defence with a simple show-and-go before powering over the top of fullback Francis Darkin.

While it appeared St Brendan’s had broken the TCC shackles, the Rockhampton school refused to let them gain the immediate upper hand.

TCC seemed almost invigorated by going behind on the scoreboard, suddenly they hit harder and ran faster.

The Rockhampton nursery had to wait until midway through the second half to finally break through the St Brendan’s defence, but once they did, they looked almost unstoppable.

That was until the coll-handed Green found his flying winger in the final moment.

Preview: The Cathedral College sweat on star fullback’s fitness

The Cathedral College coaching staff will decide on the weekend if their flying fullback, Mutua Brown, will line up for the Round 4 clash in the Dolphins Cup on Tuesday.

TCC heads to Yeppoon to take on St Brendan’s College in the Cup at 5.30pm and the Dolphins Challenge at 4.30pm – and you can watch the action live on KommunityTV via this website.

Brown would be a welcome inclusion in TCC’s Cup line-up but he has had a demanding schedule in the past few weeks.

He starred for Queensland at the national secondary schools rugby league championships, earning national selection, and on Thursday night was in the Maroons under-19 side which went down to New South Wales.

TCC’s Mick Busby said Brown would be given every chance to play on Tuesday.

“We’ll assess him when he gets back over the weekend. Obviously, if he can play, it will be very handy for us,” he said.

TCC will be without several players who were injured at the recent Confraternity Carnival, where the team finished seventh.

Hooker Zack Bryce suffered a season-ending knee injury, Ernest Walker is out with a shoulder injury and fellow forward Zac Bateman is also in doubt.

Busby said they would be looking for big performances from Brown, second rower Jack Biles, centre Toby Bateman and halfback Curtis Seierup against Confro champions St Brendan’s.

“They’ll be fighting on and doing the best they can,” he said.

“We’ve just got to stay in the grind, try to match them in the middle and go from there.

“I don’t know what St Brendan’s side will be in regards to who they have or haven’t got but we have to try to make it hard for whoever we’re up against.

“We’re currently in the top four and we need one more win to secure our spot in that top four and hopefully that can happen on Tuesday.”

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges will play NSW Combined High Schools in Friday’s ASSRL 18 years boys grand final after NSW CHS beat the ACT 32-16 on Thursday.

And NSW CHS will also play in the schoolgirls grand final at Kayo Stadium, Redcliffe, after accounting for NSW CIS 60-0.

They will face Queensland who broke NSW Combined Catholic College’s hearts 12-10 in a dramatic semi-final.

Loko Pasifiki Tonga has been a revelation for NSW CHS this week.

In the boys clash, towering NSW CHS prop Loko Pasifiki Tonga (Endeavour Sports High) was a man mountain for his side.

The 195cm tall, 118kg prop signed by the Dragons was a 2022 premiership winner with Ipswich SHS in Queensland.

But during the off-season he moved to Endeavour Sports High School to be closer to his training base at St George Illawarra.

Another star player on Thursday was Queensland utility Will Semu, signed by the TItans but in demand from rival clubs, who was back to his best after a bad head knock in 2021.

“I have progressed more than I expected this season.

I feel far more confident, and especially after making this team,’’ he said.

In schoolgirls semi-final action, it was a bruising affair won 12-10 by Queensland, with Esther Pedro saving the game with a dramatic covering tackle on NSW CCC centre Eve Keeling.

“I was thinking ‘will I catch her’,’’ said Pedro, a Year 11 student at Ipswich SHS. “Lucky I kept going and got her. It was a good one.’’

Even after Pedro’s heroics, NSWCCC almost drew level in the last minute after winger Josephine Jeffries scored, but the conversion missed.

Both team’s defended with the intensity of a final, with four dramatic tackles from Maroons’ centre Ebony Raftstrand-Smith testing the ground’s foundations.

It has been a dark week for Wests Tigers fans, but there is one schoolboy giving them reason to hope.

In the space of a week Tigers fans have had to deal with the fact Luke Brooks is leaving for the Northern Beaches, they are lacking a recognised half for next season and they were pasted 74-0 in a historic thumping at the hands of the Cowboys.

It’s been tough.

But there is one shining light in the form of NSW CHS halfback Lachlan Galvin.

In the space of 60 minutes, the Westfields Sports High talent made it clear the future isn’t all doom at Concord, after masterfully steering NSWCHS to a dominant win over NSWCIS on Saturday.

The 17-year-old Campbelltown product, who was previously part of the Eels junior system, will join the Tigers top 30 squad next season.

I am loving it

“I am loving it (at the Tigers),” Galvin said. “I got there last year and I am loving it.

“I just want to focus on my footy, train hard. I go into the Top 30 next year.

“When I got there I looked up to the NRL boys. Wayne Lambkin was the coach at Westfield and he’s the reserve grade coach there now and he’s really helped me and my footy.”

Galvin wasn’t the only future Tiger to impress for the NSWCHS side, with winger Luke Laulilii scoring an impressive double.

The duo have played together at Westfields Sports High for a number of years, and the playmaker said their combination was sound.

“In the Harold Mathews Cup, he (Laulilii) was fullback and we worked really well together,” Galvin said.

“It’s good to play with him he’s very fast. I just have to find him, he gives me a lot of room and he follows me.”

When asked who Galvin models his game off he said it was Queensland five-eighth Cameron Munster.

The NSW Combined High Schools lethal wing combination of Nikora Williams and Laulilii, with Galvin at the trigger, blew away their NSW Combined Independent Schools rivals in a 24-6.

NSWCIS, who also feature a Tigers-bound playmaker in Alex Conti, will have little time to lick their wounds as they return to action at the ASSRL Nationals on Monday.

After a day off the field, the competition returns in a massive way with the first games for the Combined Affiliated States and ACT boys sides.

NSWCIS will cap off a massive day of action against the ACT, while the CAS side will meet a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges side flying off the back of a big win against Queensland on Saturday.

Monday’s action kicks off at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe with another three rounds of the fast and flashy Schoolgirls Nationals tournament.

Marymount College Surges Into Semis

Marymount College Surges Into Open Confro Semis

One of the most open Confraternity Carnivals in memory has brought together three unbeaten semi-finalists and a Marymount College team that rode an extraordinary path into the final four of the famous schools meet in Brisbane today.

Marymount College, coached by NRL premiership winner Matt Geyer and featuring famous rugby league names, kept their cool in two dramatic finishes today at St Laurence’s playing fields at Runcorn.

Geyer went to bed last night thinking his players could be denied a shot at the historic Shield because their path to the semi-finals was so tough.

Burleigh Waters school needed to win today’s final pool match while hoping two-time defending champions Ignatius Park College lost their first “Confro” game since 2018.

It all unfolded within three tense minutes as Ignatius Park College lost to surging Emmaus College.

Rockhampton while Marymount College scored after the siren on the neighbouring field to secure a superior points differential to qualify for the quarter-finals. Until that try,

Marymount and Ignatius Park had been locked on the same points differential.

Marymount College then came from behind to defeat The Cathedral College, Rockhampton 10-6 to reach Thursday’s semi-finals along with three unbeaten teams.

Three unbeaten teams

Emmaus College, Rockhampton; St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon; and St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

The Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 52 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

The first carnival was played in 1980 with a host of Queensland’s greatest players emerging from the event.

This day is nicknamed “heartbreak Tuesday” because four draining matches in two days, including a quarter-final, can knock teams out of the Confraternity Shield race before tomorrow’s rest day.

The heartbreak came today for Ignatius Park College. The runner-up in last year’s Queensland open schools titles and the most consistent Confro team over more than a decade was a stunning casualty.

Meanwhile, Marymount College rejoiced as they reached the last four of the Confraternity Shield after storming home late in the semi-darkness at Bundaberg in 2019.

“I went to bed last night really hoping the players could make it through today because we know they’re a quality team but the path today wasn’t easy,” Geyer said.

“This is my ninth carnival and I can’t remember one that’s been so open so it’s a great opportunity for all teams in the semi-finals.

“We know we’ll have to play well on Thursday but we have a really good bunch of kids who play the game in the right spirit which is what this carnival is all about. It’s exciting to be getting ready for a semi-final.”

Some of the Marymount players’ surnames are familiar to league fans.

Centre Phillip Coates’ is the brother of Queensland winger Xavier; Oscar Laffranchi is the son of former Blues Origin forward Anthony; and powerful backrower Cooper Bai is the son of former PNG star Marcus.

But it took the speed of halfback Jimi Pedlow to claim the winning try for Marymount as a brave TCC scrambled to defend a counter-attack that broke their 6-4 at halftime.

Marymount will meet St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon in the semi-finals. The Confro heavyweight has won its four matches across the first two days and showcased its power with a 46-0 win over St Augustine’s College, Cairns in the quarter-final.

Thursday’s second semi-final brings together Emmaus College, Rockhampton and St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

Emmaus College has maintained its impressive lead-up form with an unbeaten run into the semi-finals.

Their 16-0 win over Ignatius Park College in the final pool match sounded a warning backed up by a 20-0 semi-final win over Shalom College, Bundaberg.

St Patrick’s College overcame an impressive Iona College, Lindum in their quarter-final 18-6. Last year’s runners-up made the most of their opportunities to remain unbeaten for the week.

A total of 16 teams each contest the boys’ Divisions 1 and 2 while 20 teams are playing in Division 3.

The second-tier Bob Linder Trophy will be decided between: Marist College, Ashgrove; St Peter Claver College, Riverview; Ignatius Park College; and St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

They each won their quarter-finals this afternoon.

Ignatius Park faced one of the most stunning losses in Confro history only to hold on to defeat Division 1 debutants St Edmund’s College, Ipswich 18-16 in their Trophy quarter-final.

St Edmund’s dominated the last 10 minutes of the match in one of the most stirring performances in recent carnival history.

The quarter-finals were held across Division 2 today and 2022 champions Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby are in the running again.

They reached the semi-finals alongside Columba Catholic College, Charters Towers; St Columban’s College, Caboolture and host school St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane.

The quarter-finals for Division 3 will be contested on Thursday with finals for all Divisions on Friday.

Queensland fullback not just quick on his feet

ASSRL Nationals Live Stream: Cowboys kid Mutua Brown heralded as a thinking player

He’s the lightning fast fullback who will have heads turning at the ASSRL Nationals.

But future Cowboy Mutua Brown, is not just quick on his feet.

He is the lightning fullback set to lead Queensland at the ASSRL Nationals, but the only thing faster than Mutua Brown’s feet, is his mind.

The teenage speedster, who was born and bred in Far North Queensland, is well regarded in rugby league circles as one of the game’s young thinkers.

Contracted to the Cowboys for the past two years, The Cathedral College student will move to Townsville next year to join the club’s Young Guns program.

But before then, he will be a key piece to the ASSRL puzzle for Queensland as the state aims to go back-to-back in Redcliffe.

Every match of the ASSRL Under-18s Nationals will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from July 1, including the girls’ competition in its inaugural year.

Cowboys head of development and pathways Glenn Hall will be on the sidelines for the nationals with the Queensland side featuring five players contracted the club’s pathways program.

Brown is joined by fellow Cowboys youngsters Xavier Kerrisk, Jaxon Purdue, Kaiden Lahrs and Mason Kira.

The electric fullback has walked a similar path to Queensland Origin flyer Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, growing up in Far North Queensland before taking up an opportunity to join the GPS rugby ranks at Ipswich Grammar.

But a chance to return to rugby league at The Cathedral College in Rockhampton, put him on the radar of the Cowboys who have been impressed by his swift development over the past two years.

He is a naturally gifted kid

“He is a naturally gifted kid and he is getting good coaching down there at TCC,” Hall said.

“He is developing really nicely, he is a good footballer. He has a high skillset with the ball, he is tough defensively and he is learning how to organise the line defensively and how to talk to his players.

“He has a lot of skills but one of the best things about him is he has a lovely personality, he is a gentleman and a student of the game.

He wants to learn the game, he asks a lot of questions and then he takes what he learns and implements it.

“He watches a lot of football and talks to (Cowboys pathways coach) Steve Shephard about what he is seeing.

He picks things up that he watches and he wants to add it to his game. He is a thinker.”

TCC head of rugby league Mick Busby, who coached the Capricornia schoolboys side to the state grand final last month, has a high opinion of the young fullback.

Busby believes Brown is in line to become the school’s first Australian schoolboys’ representative.

“He would have been in the top-five players at the state carnival, he is playing for Queensland and he is a real chance of making that Australian schoolboys side. I want him to have every opportunity to do that,” Busby said.

“He is the complete package.

“He has that sheer pace but also the strength and determination that makes a good fullback. He is very, very good.”

Brown will start at fullback for Queensland when they open the ASSRL Nationals against NSW Combined Catholic Colleges on Saturday.

Confraternity Carnival Takes Off At Suncorp Stadium

The 2023 Confraternity Carnival opened at Queensland rugby league’s most famous ground today, sparking another week of action featuring more than 1200 students from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

Host school St Laurence’s College met Villanova College at Suncorp Stadium in the curtain-raiser to the Broncos-Titans NRL clash. It was the first time that “Confro” had featured at Suncorp Stadium in the carnival’s four decades of history.

St Laurence’s opened the carnival in style with a 26-16 win over Villanova in the boys’ Division 2 match.

The Associated Independent Colleges rivals attracted large groups of supporters to Suncorp Stadium for a game that showed both teams are prepared for strong Carnival performances.

St Laurence’s five-try haul was shared among the team including, Finn Mackay, Jack Tuite, Hudson Burgess and Campbell Wilson.

Villanova made it to the line three times thanks to two tries by Jackson Connor and a thirty-third minute try by Larry Clark.

An opening ceremony and the traditional Mass service will be held tonight with all squads featuring.

The Carnival proper will begin tomorrow – the traditional Monday start – at St Laurence’s College’s playing fields at Runcorn and run until Friday when finals are held. This will be the 43rd Confro and the first hosted by St Laurence’s College.

It will again be sponsored by CQ University.

More than 1000 schoolboys and more than 200 schoolgirls will play this week. They will represent 52 schools in the boys’ competition and 12 in the girls draw.

That’s an increase of four boys’ teams and three girls’ teams on last year’s Carnival in Mackay.

In its four decades, Confro has become one of the nation’s best rugby league nurseries.

Seven Confraternity Carnival graduates featured in the Maroons squad for the second match of the 2023 State of Origin series: Daly Cherry-Evans (St Patrick’s College, Mackay), Cameron Munster (Emmaus College, Rockhampton).

Valentine Holmes (Ignatius Park College, Townsville), Ben Hunt and Harry Grant (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon), Lindsay Collins (Padua College, Kedron) and Xavier Coates (Marymount College, Burleigh Waters).

Organised by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, Confraternity Carnival was held every year from 1980 until 2019.

In 2020, the carnival could not be held because of Covid-19. In 2021, “Confro” had reached its quarter-final stages at Iona College when a Covid-19 lockdown in southeast Queensland forced its immediate cancellation.

It returned to normal last year

It returned to normal last year with Townsville’s Ignatius Park College winning a second consecutive Confraternity Shield.

The boys’ carnival is contested in three divisions of 16 teams (Divisions 1 and 2) and 20 teams (Division 3).

The make-up of the divisions can be found on the QISSRL website: www.confraternitycarnival.com.au Teams can play up to two matches each day.

The girls’ teams will each play two games on Monday 26 June and two games on Tuesday 27 June.

Those results will determine the order for Thursday’s finals, during which each team will play one match.

The girls’ Shield grand final will be held at 11am on Thursday 29 June. The Trophy grand final will be held for the first time at 10am on 29 June.
