In western Sydney, two high schools have become certified champion factories for NRL clubs.

Churning out players for 15 of the NRL’s 17 clubs, Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown and Westfields Sports High School in Fairfield West educated 52 players in the current competition, and their playing fields are teeming with future stars.

Data on the high schools attended by 98 per cent of NRL players, compiled by this masthead, reveals the league’s 500-odd players attended more than 250 high schools, with an almost even split between public and independent education.

Boasting 31 players across 13 teams, Patrician Brothers, in Sydney’s north-west, leads the pack, with Spencer Leniu, Terrell May and Jarome Luai among its alumni. Further south, Westfields Sports High School has 21 ex-students across nine teams.

This masthead categorised schools as either being public, independent, or overseas. The Gold Coast Titans had the highest percentage of publicly educated players, at 77 per cent.

Eighty-one per cent of Sydney Roosters players went to private schools, including Knox Grammar and Newington College, more than any other team.

In fact, more Roosters players attended Bellevue Hill’s Scots College than public school.

Public schools were seven top 10 schools for educating players, and 45 per cent of total schools attended by players. Independent schools made up 41 per cent, and overseas schools 14 per cent.

NSW also claimed seven schools in the top 10. Queensland public schools Keebra Park, Palm Beach Currumbin and Wavell State High took out third, fifth and eighth place, respectively.

Patrician Brothers’ head of rugby league, Greg Beacroft, said that the school’s reputation “means a lot” to students, but the competitiveness of the sport meant there was a broader responsibility in ushering players through its halls.

All classifications are Australia-centric. Warriors players educated “overseas” were educated in New Zealand; “public” and “independent” were educated in Australia.

“We tell the kids – particularly when they come in year 7: ‘You’re not coming here to play rugby league. Your first priority is to get a good education. Your second priority is to be a good, respectful person.’ We see rugby league as a bonus.”

Of the school’s ex-students in the league, more than half play in local clubs, with four players in the Bulldogs, Eels, Panthers and Tigers, respectively.

The school has up to 15 rugby league teams, with teachers and many former students serving as coaches. Training – typically two or three sessions a week – is scheduled around students’ external club commitments.

Beacroft said the X-factor that made Patrician Brothers so successful was a school community that “as a whole wants to help students achieve their best” and prioritised community outreach, including volunteering missions to feed the homeless.

“We live in an area where rugby league is very dominant,” said Beacroft. “You put all those factors together, and you get a school that wants to help kids do well and has high expectations in all areas. That’s a perfect partnership for those kids who are looking to further themselves.”

At Westfields Sports High – the alma mater of nine Tigers players – players train three to four times a week on the field and in the gym.

Westfields’ sport director Troy Weeden said each student came with a different set of skills, and he didn’t “want to put a label on them when they’re 12 years old, that they’re going to play NRL or not”.

“They’ve all got their own pathway. Some come here almost ready to go physically, and it might be a matter of upskilling them. Some might have a very different path where it might take them five or six years before they really have the confidence to show that ability.”

However, some players, like Raiders prop Trey Mooney and Tigers five-eighth Lachlan Galvin, show promise for a professional career from day one.

“From quite an early stage, he had all the makings,” Weeden said of Galvin.

“He had the competitiveness, he had the ability to read the game, he had the skill level, but probably didn’t have the physical nature that some of the other kids have had.

“I don’t think you ever see it when they’re 12 or 13. By the age of 16 or 17, you get a pretty good gauge of whether a kid could kick on. But you could never write off a player at a young age because of the different pathways they’re on.”

Athletes in Westfields’ rugby program are required to maintain good grades and 90 per cent attendance to play in their teams. Weeden said this was vital as many players are the first in their family to complete an HSC.

“They come to us with a focus on rugby league, but we’ve got to show them that rugby league only gets them 10 to 12 years of a great career.

They’ve got another 30 years where they’ve got to figure out their pathway through work, and not everyone’s going to get there.

There are 230 students in this rugby league program.

At most, we might get 10 to 15 in [the NRL].”

The Steeden floated high above the Cbus Super Stadium turf.

With 90 seconds left in the NRL Schoolboys Cup national final, and two points bewteen the sides, time stood still.

The entire stadium crowd drew a collective breath as opposing wingers Patrician Brothers’ Chad Riddle and Palm Beach Currumbin’s Beau Hatmann leapt as the footy tumbled down from the sky – and Hartmann prevailed.

He picked Riddle’s pocket and surged towards the stripe untouched with 90 seconds left on the clock to hand Palm Beach Currumbin a two-point lead – just minutes after he had dropped a similar chance at full stretch for what would’ve been a certain try.

The moment meant Palm Beach Currumbin clinched their third NRL national schoolboys title in a gripping 18-16 triumph over Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown. It was a win as special as they come, in a match as gripping as they come.

“I don’t even know, it was a perfect kick,” said Hartmann of the magical try after the game.

“I couldn’t have done it without Zane (haflback Harrison). It came down to luck really.

“I can’t describe it, it’s just so good, it’s the best feeling ever.”

The result was a repeat of 2018 where the same outcome ensued between the two schools. On that day, Tom Dearden was the star for Palm Beach Currumbin.

This time, it was another Reds half in Zane Harrison.

Harrison was amazing. The final try was just reward for a great kicking display for the full 60 minutes, and his defence was as good as his attack.

Twice he scooped up the footy in dangerous territory and scurried out of the in-goal to save PBC’s blushes.

PBC coach Tim Maccan was full of praise

PBC coach Tim Maccan was full of praise for his star half, who is signed to the Titans and seems destined to have a long career lighting up Cbus Super Stadium ahead of him.

“He’s the type of player where you just give him the keys and he drives it for you. I love him. He’s been my halfback for the last three years and he’s been unbelievable,” Maccan said.

PBC defended gallantly all day, fighting tooth and nail under immense pressure against a star-studded Patties Blacktown outfit containing four Australian Schoolboys representatives.

The earlier two tries came courtesy of Reuben Tamariki, who spearheaded the Palm Beach Currumbin forward pack all day and earned himself a double thanks to some brilliant hole running.

“He’s had his best season this year, he really dug deep at times when we needed him and he did a great job today,” Maccan said.

The Reds coach was equally impressed with Marley Igasan, who had been absent from the side for the past three weeks.

“He was unbelievable, he played almost a whole game …. he’s been training his butt off in our extended group, he was amazing.”

PBC had led for much of the second half until Pats Blacktown five-eighth and co-captain Jared Haywood turned the match on its head in a matter of minutes with two superb cut out passes to set up back-to-back tries.

His first floater sent gun lock Tyson Sangalang under the posts, before he broke apart the Reds edge defence in a matter of seconds as he slowed himself to draw in the defence before picking out Riddle.

It’s no wonder Dragons coach Shane Flanagan rates front-rower Jacob Halangahu so highly given he delivered bruising run after bruising run through the middle and drove his side into very dangerous territory.

The loss continues a sorry streak for the proud Sydney school, who have just a lone national title to show for eight national final appearances.

For Maccan, a simple age-old cliche told him everything he needed to know. And it was one that proved hard to argue with come full-time.

“I just told the boys that (Patrician) have a lot of individual champions in their team,” he said.

“But we’re a champion team and that’ll always beat it.”

The most damaging player in schoolboys rugby league. Halangahu has a competitive fire that cannot be extinguished. He will hit hard and run even harder, keep an eye out for a game-changing offload.

While he is definitely in a mould of his own, the Dragons SG Ball winner plays a similar game to Titans big man David Fifita.

The Eels young gun plays eyes up football behind the ruck, and will be able to spot an issue with the markers before they realise there is one. Every play for the Patties side begins with Coinakis, and the Australian Schoolboys representative will be determined to get them on the front foot early.

The damaging ballrunner can be even more damaging without it.

The Titans young gun, who spent a pre-season with their NRL side last Summer, has been a revelation out wide for Palm Beach Currumbin in recent years.

He was also part of the Queensland Under-19 Origin squad this year and picked in the Australian Schoolboys side.

He hasn’t played a game of rugby league in more than two months, but don’t expect Sydir to be putting the handbrake on in this one.

He targeted the national final as his return, and will be desperate to deliver that premiership glory to his school in his final year. Possesses a strong running game and will be the chief organiser for the Patties attack.

An incredible year of firsts for Ipswich State High has culminated in the ultimate reward – the national schoolboys title – after a big win over Patrician Brothers, Fairfield.

Ipswich SHS wrote the final chapter in its Cinderella Season by beating Patrician Brothers Fairfield 32-6 to claim the coveted NRL Schoolboys Cup final at Redcliffe.

It was Ipswich SHS’s third grand final win in four weeks following earlier historic victories in the Langer Trophy and then the Phil Hall Cup state final.

Captain Josiah Pahulu wrote both the foreword and was one of the main characters in his team’s storybook winter and spring that has been unmatched in Ipswich SHS’s history.

The old school of Broncos and Queensland champion Allan Langer and current Sharks star Ronaldo Mulitalo, Ipswich SHS has a proud league history, but this milestone moment must be top of the pops.

Winning coach Joshua Bretherton said Patrician Brothers Fairfield came hard at them down the middle and he was proud his side withstood the challenge.

“Under fire and under seige, against a team which plays brutal, high intensity football, the ability of my guys to keep their heads, calm and focused is what I am most proud of,” he said.

“And across the final series we have shown an ability to play with speed, to terrify people with the speed in which we move forward.’’

Patrician Brothers Fairfield, the NSW school champions, came to play, don’t worry, with a ruthless power game and challenged the fitness and toughness and desire of the Ipswich SHS pack.

One after another Patrician Brothers came at their rivals, mixing their forward challenge with dummy half scurries. It was a far closer game than the scores indicate.

But there could only be one winner and Ipswich SHS, unbeaten this year, found their way to the winners post as they have done all season.

Patrician Brothers coach Frank Pritchard said his team had climbed a mountain to get to grand final day and were simply beaten by a better side.

“It has been a roller coaster,’’ Pritchard said.

“It has been a great achievement for our team and what we have done for the school, but today, I have no excuses.

“We were just beaten by a better team.

“To Ipswich’s credit they were just the better team.’’

“We have not been here for 30 years and what these guys have done is awesome.

“I am proud of them. We came up against a side like Ipswich who produced a class performance.’’

Ipswich SHS caught out Patrician Brothers Fairfield twice in the opening minutes of both halves, both left edge spreads which resulted in centre Tre Fotu scoring (2nd minute) and winger Anton Naiyep (32nd minute) crossing.

Naiyep finish was classic wingers play, with the No.5 pinning his ears back and sprinting 35m to the corner despite three late comers crashing him toward the corner post.

The hammer blow then came three minutes later when the discovery player of the season, Ipswich SHS dummy half Gabriel Satrick, feasted on possession to score after a charge down had restarted the tackle count.

Although 24 minutes remained, 22-0 was a long way back for Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

Patrician Brothers Fairfield did score next – the power game yielding a try for a scurrying Yehya Ayache – and they were back in business.

But with 13 minutes remaining Satrick’s dummy half sidekick, Tommy Luhrman, launched at the line like he was starting off in a 100m freestyle swimming race, finding the line to score.

At 28-6 the result was settled. Everyone was just waiting on the final score.

It was a battle royale across the opening 30 minutes as both teams pounded each other in the middle third.

Patrician Brothers Fairfield were hellbent on beating their man in the middle with a power game and running off the back of that with dummy half darts.

It was effective, although Ipswich SHS did curtail the running game of prop giant Jordan Miller and, to a lesser degree, the aggressive running of left edge back rower and captain Joshua Alhazim.

Ipswich SHS held on, but as the game progressed in warm conditions, you sensed a fatigue factor could come into play for both sides.

And so it was the case six minutes before halftime when Ipswich SHS halfback Jalen Afamasaga speared through a gap almost as wide as the Sydney Heads to score after a quick tap and run from a penalty.

It was Ipswich’s second try after an early, successful charge at the line by Tre Fotu.

There was a huge moment 90 seconds before halftime when Ipswich right edge forward Oliva Iaulualo extended his arm to score, but had the ball knocked out, saving Patrician Brothers Fairfield from a 16-0 deficit.

Earlier, in the opening minutes, Ipswich SHS wasted no time in playing footy, casting aside any thought of a nervous, conservative opening by sweeping the ball right and then left, leading to centre Fotu scoring in the corner.

It would have taken a prime mover to halt the big Queensland centre who came on the burst with such ferocity, there was no stopping him. It was 4-0.

Patrician Brothers fullback Junior Fagalel then doused a dangerous situation when he grasped Ipswich winger Kulu Baruani who almost kicked clear to score after snaring an attacking bomb.

Mariner magic conjures up Phil Hall Cup for Palm Beach Currumbin

Brisbane Broncos-bound centre Deine Mariner was the man of the moment in the NRL Schoolboy Cup Queensland final, playing a pivotal role in Palm Beach Currumbin’s 62-0 Phil Hall Cup domination.

Against St Brendan’s College at Moreton Daily Stadium, the point-scoring specialist was the lynchpin in the Gold Coast-based school’s right-side reign, playing a part in six tries.

Mariner crossed for three of his own and assisted in another three four-pointers to avenge last year’s heartbreaking loss in the big dance to Kirwan State High School.

“It feels good. Our team… we set this as a goal, particularly after last year,” Mariner said post-match, describing the feeling of winning the NRL Schoolboy Cup Queensland title.

“I’m really proud of the boys’ efforts today and getting the ‘W’ really means a lot.

“It has been a good year… it’s been pretty successful and I’m keen to see what’s in-store for the future.”

It only took three minutes for the victors to get on the board when Jett Forbes latched onto an intercept and ran 70 metres to get down the other end of the field before being pulled down by St Brendan’s defenders… but the desperation defence was in vain two plays later when Oscar Bryant found Keano Kini loitering near the line to bring up Palm Beach’s first.

The opening two tries of Mariner’s first half hat-trick came during the next 10 minutes as he crossed twice to accelerate the lead to 16-0.

The Broncos dynamo then played a hand in Forbes’ first of his four-try haul before scooping up a well-executed Tom Weaver grubber to seal his hat-trick in only the 25th minute.

At half-time, Palm Beach were well in control at 30-0 and whilst not discrediting the effort shown by the Scott Minto-coached St Brendan’s side to try and stop the onslaught, they were not ready to put the cue in the rack.

Coming out from the sheds after the break energised to claim victory in style, the South East Queensland juggernauts went on a point-scoring frenzy with four different names troubling the defence in the space of 15 minutes – Bryant, Michael Roberts, Kini for his double and Ryan Foran all finding the white chalk before the 45th minute.

With the game well and truly gone at 48-0, Mariner linked up with Forbes to allow the winger to cross twice more and Roberts added the icing on the cake right on full-time with an impressive four-pointer to send the Phil Hall Cup to the front offices of Palm Beach Currumbin – a feat that hasn’t been achieved since 2018 when Tom Dearden and Toby Sexton starred in the halves.

Reflecting on the win, ex-Palm Beach Currumbin student and current coach Tim Maccan said it was a proud moment to be NRL Schoolboy Cup state champions.

“To coach this team is a real privilege and a real honour,” Maccan said.

“To be an ex-student and to win a state final, myself, I know what the boys have been through and what they’re doing, so it was great to win one as a player but to win one as a coach is extra special.”

Attributing the success of the right edge to the game plan set down, Maccan also emphasised the role his forward pack played in laying the platforms.

“We planned to get some quality ball to the right side. We’ve got some strike weapons out there in Deine Mariner and Michael Roberts moving there so we knew had to get some quality ball and some good position and we knew we’d get some rewards there,” Maccan said.

“But the forwards made a bit of a pact they wanted to hold the score to zero and they wanted to make sure they led from the front, hold the middle tight and let all the backs get all the glory.

“I thought our three starting middles were great today.”

With a large percentage of the Reds side also members of the Tweed Seagulls’ outfit that claimed the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup title earlier this year, including Maccan, the dual title-winning coach said he could not be more proud of the achievement this year and it proved the systems in place for club and school football were working.

“It’s great. It’s a big team effort with the boys we’ve got. A lot of them are from Tweed and the coaching staff is the same,” the Palm Beach Currumbin coach said.

“I’ve got great coaching staff and great players here and it just shows the systems were are using work and are successful and we’ll keep doing it.”

With COVID-19 forcing the cancellation of the New South Wales NRL Schoolboy Cup competition, Palm Beach Currumbin’s journey ends as Queensland winners the national final cancelled due to the current situation.

In the earlier matches, St Augustine’s clinched victory from the jaws of defeat with a 20-18 come-from-behind win over Lockyer District in the NRL Schoolboy Trophy; meanwhile, Keebra Park were too strong for Kirwan State High School to claim the Karyn Murphy Cup 24-8.
