QLD City and Country share spoils

Queensland Under 17 representative pathway matches between City and Country finished in a deadlock over the weekend.

City won the girls’ match 40-12, before Country hit back to claim the boys’ clash 36-8.

Incredibly, both City and Country accumulated 48 points across the two games at Burleigh, recording the exact same number of tries and goals.

In the girls’ match, City prop Sianah Misa scored two second-half tries in a powerhouse display.

City led 18-4 at half-time and fought off a gallant Country comeback which looked threatening following tries to Diaz Bowen and Hayley Wainwright.

In the boys’ match, Country fullback Derek Ahwang was in scintillating form, crossing for four tries in the 28-point win.

Country led 28-0 at half-time, but City refused to back down in the second half with Jordan Tuuga-Stevenson and Toetu Misipati Toetu both crossing the line.

Redcliffe Dolphins win Mal Meninga Cup

Redcliffe end 10-year Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup premiership drought

The Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup final edition has been written for 2023 and for the Redcliffe Dolphins, it will be a retold narrative.

For the Townville Blackhawks it’s another missed chance.

The Dolphins stormed to a 36-18 victory over the Blackhawks at Totally Workwear Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday, claiming their first under 18s premiership trophy in 10 years.

For Redcliffe, the first half was where the game was won, with the spine and leadership outstanding in the opening stanza.

Redcliffe hooker Mitch Rogers led the charge, kicking boldly for touch and winning his team ground from his 40/20.

From there, winger Siosifa Kava got the Dolphins four points and the dream start.

Townsville responded with a try to Reece Foley, but Redcliffe didn’t lose focus and came straight back at them when captain Michael Waqa got a quick play-the-ball.

Five-eighth John Fineanganofo kicked and regathered to score his 12th try of the season and his fourth try of the finals series.

The first half carnage continued and brut force was on show when Redcliffe centre Prestyn Laine-Sietu physically dominated and ran over the top of the Blackhawks to hand the Dolphins their third try.

The Dolphins then finished the half going left from the scrum, with Fineanganofo digging in and unleashing his outside backs, with Jayden Alefaio capitalising.

At halftime the Dolphins were ahead 20-4. With Rogers’ kicking, Fineanganofo’s playmaking and Waqa leading from the front, Redcliffe had done everything to make sure they had the early running.

The Blackhawks needed to start the second half well and win the first 10 minutes.

On the back of three penalties, they found themselves in great position and Harley Walker twisted and moved his way to score his sixth try to put Townsville back in the game.

The Blackhawks then scored the another two tries but there was no jitters amongst the Dolphins who steadied themselves and resumed the norm.

Redcliffe centre Laine-Sietu wasn’t done with his power and physical game as he conjured up his second, coming back inside to beat five Blackhawks and put the ball down.

The Dolphins then extended their lead even further with a break down the left-hand side by Fineanganofo.

The Dolphins went right to come back left and Elijah Rasmussen dived over and the lead was 20.

Inspirational skipper Waqa then finished the grand final with a try. The Dolphins’ 36-18 win gave them their first Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup title since 2013.

2022 will see an exciting new addition to the facilities at Keebra Park with the unveiling of a new state of the art strength and conditioning centre.

Keebra Park leaves No stone Unturned with new state of the art strength and conditioning centre

This centre will allow more students from across our sporting Academies, access to development opportunities under the supervision of a team of qualified strength and condition coaches as they pursue their sporting goals.

Meanwhile our current year 11 students have been making the most of working out in the old gymnasium in preparation for the 2022 season.

This old facility has always been a fairly spartan building with the discipline and determination of the athlete, being far more an indicator of success that the equipment itself and while we are all looking forward eagerly to our new state of the art facility, the ethics and attitudes of those that came before will no doubt echo through its girders and foundations and guide the next generation onwards to success.

Country clinch thrilling win in Under 17 Girls match

Author : Colleen Edwards QRL content producer

The Queensland Under 17 Country – Girls came from behind twice to clinch a thrilling victory in an entertaining game at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Match: QLD City v QLD Country

Round 1 – Saturday 2nd October

Full Time : Queensland City Under 17 Girls 20 – 22 Queensland City Under 17 Girls

Half Time : Queensland City Under 17 Girls 10 – 10 Queensland City Under 17 Girls

Venue : Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

At half-time, scores were locked at 10-10, but City had started the better with two quick tries to powerful prop Jacinta Carter and speedy winger Ebony Raftstrand-Smith before Country clawed back to stay in the match.

In the second half, City again got out to a lead in an almost carbon copy start, before the Country side showed grit and determination to fight their way back, with a Jayde Herdegen getting scores level just before the fulltime siren.

Country halfback Emily Bella was able to convert the try as the siren sounded to clinch the win.

Country coach Amanda Ohl was proud of the effort of her players, given the way they were able to fight back after straying initially from their game plan.

“Fantastic, the girls really, really stuck in,” Ohl said.

“We had a Country mentality … it was a really spirited, heartful effort from the girls.

“We didn’t start either half very well, but we have got a nice group and they got right behind each other and fought for the win.

“It’s a lifelong moment for young Em to kick the ball over the sticks with the siren gone.

“We knew that coming in, anyone who had anything to do with the Country side knew and were all excited for one thing and that was Emily and Jayde playing on the same field together, they are the pinnacle for Under 17s at the moment and when the game was on the line, they both stood up.”

NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final dynamic duo

NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final dynamic duo’s Weaver-Bryant, Maua’i-Faagutu

NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final dynamic duo: PBC SHS pair Tom Weaver Oskar Bryant meet in a birthing suite; Marsden SHS pair Jieye Maua’i and Chris Faagutu mates from way back.

Tune in LIVE to see the best schoolboys in Queensland battle it out for the titles.

It is little wonder Palm Beach Currumbin SHS pair Tom Weaver and Oskar Bryant seem to be able to read each other’s minds on the field – after all they were first together on the day Bryant was born.

Halfback Weaver and hooker Bryant will be two of the dynamic duos involved in today’s NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final to be played between Langer Trophy champions Marsden SHS and PBC SHS at Kougari Oval.

The three matches livestreamed by News Corps today will be:

— Caloundra SHS v Mabel Park (De Vere Cup, 12.30),

— Redcliffe SHS v Clairvaux MacKillop College (open Gee Cup, 1.45pm)

— Marsden SHS v PBC SHS (NRL Schoolboys Cup, 3pm).

Weaver and Bryant, both Gold Coast Titans signings, have had parallel lives since Weaver was in the birthing suite the day Bryant was born.

“My dad (Aaron) and his dad (Glenn) played footy together and my mum (Renee) and his mum (Joanne) went to school together,’’ Bryant explained.

Oskar Bryant, left, and Tom Weaver – together again.

“I have known him for 18 years this year, and have been playing footy with him since under 6s at Cudgen (northern NSW),’’ Bryant said.

“Every team we have made, we have played together.

“It (our combination) just comes naturally. I just look at him and the play he calls, I just put the ball straight on his chest.’’

Tom said: “We have been mates since we were born.

“We have just grown up in the same families basically – our families are still really close and that just led to us playing footy together since we were six-years-old.

“It really helps out on the field.

“He knows when I want the ball and there are times when I am not in the right position to get a kick away or put a play on and he will run it himself or kick it himself.

“We are instinctive – that we know what each other needs.’’

PBC SHS Tim Maccan said it was an uncanny association which reminded him of when he played with Brad Davis at both school (PBC SHS) and Intrust Super Cup (Seagulls) level.

PBC SHS five-eighth Michael Roberts said it was great playing alongside Weaver and Bryant.

“Tom directs the boys into the right place and Oskar is eyes up – he knows when to go at the right times,’’ Roberts said.

Marsden SHS also have their own version of Batman and Robyn – Jieye Maua’i and Chris Faagutu.

Both backrowers, the boys first met playing under 9s at Logan Brothers have enjoyed plenty of good times together wearing the Marsden SHS jersey.

“I remember training with him in under 9s and we got to know each other,’’ Maua’i said.

Maua’i said they had a great understanding of each other on the field.

“He leads by example and sets the standards for the middles and everyone in the team,’’ Maua’i said.

“And off the field he is a good person to know.’’

Faagutu said his mate Maua’i was a quiet achiever. “He works hard, tackles hard and achieves a lot.’’

Mustangs pack swags and travel west to repay faith

Author : Cameron Stallard QRL content producer

Multiple times a week, a handful of the Western Mustangs’ under 16 squad journey more than 700 kilometres without fuss to participate in the Cyril Connell Challenge.

Making the trek from Roma to Toowoomba regularly to train and play, the squad’s eastern members wanted to ease the burden slightly and show their appreciation of the commitment their western teammates make, so they packed their swags and headed to the Maranoa for a training weekend recently.

With the overall squad made up by players from not just Toowoomba, but also Tenterfield, Warwick, Oakey, Dalby, Roma and everywhere in between, Mustangs Cyril Connell Challenge coach Matthew Jahnke said the idea was the least his side could do to be fair to those players who had shown almighty dedication.

“There are five boys in the squad that are out in that direction and the team is obviously the Western Mustangs that incorporates Roma so obviously the idea was to make sure these boys get an equal opportunity as well,” Jahnke said.

“They’re travelling 400 kilometres one way to come into a training session that might be an hour and a half at the gym followed by a field session and then have to drive home, so it was a way to make sure we’re fair and equitable to everybody.

“It’s also a great way for the boys to get out to the other communities and be part of that as well.”

Many of the players, with the support of family, friends and local clubs, have spent plenty of time on the road; none more so than the Roma and District players who have already clocked up more than 12,000 kilometres, travelling more than 700 kilometres weekly to attend a two-hour training session in Toowoomba.

“They love it and they’ve never once complained about having to do it. It’s just something they’ve always had to do,” Jahnke said.

“For me, if we could give them a sleep in or give them an opportunity to stay in their own bed and wake up the next day and come to training, I thought it was a great idea and a great way to build team camaraderie and that sort of stuff.”

Arriving in Roma, the boys were greeted with open arms by the Roma and District Rugby League community who provided them with good old country hospitality.

Rolling out swags at the local Roma Cities clubhouse, the squad were even confronted with a grasshopper plague that gave them a real bush experience.

The Western Mustangs Cyril Connell Challenge camped in swags at the Roma Cities clubhouse in the recent trek to the Maranoa.

“It was good… it was nice and tight,” Jahnke said.

“I’d like to thank the Roma Cities who allowed us to stay inside the clubhouse out there.

“The boys brought their swags and got in there and had a good night. There was some good banter and some good chats.

“They were up early in the morning and Cities put on breakfast for us as well so we were able to have a good breaky before getting stuck into our training session.”

With only one match remaining for the Mustangs in the 2021 Cyril Connell Challenge season, Jahnke said it had been an enjoyable experience to coach the hard-working youngsters.

Match: Capras v Mustangs
ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Theodore Sports and Recreation Ground, Theodore

“I’ve really enjoyed coaching this bunch of boys,” Jahnke said.

“There’s a lot of talent from not only Toowoomba, but obviously Roma, Dalby and surrounds as well.

“There’s a lot of great young kids all willing to put their hands up, get in and get the job down and work hard at training.

“We set pretty high standards for ourselves and I think we’re moving in the right direction.”
