Two clubs feature in every Junior Reps final

Two clubs – Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters – are enjoying great success in the NSWRL Junior Representatives this year with teams making finals in all four competitions.

Six True Blues – Vanessa Foliaki (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Westpac Lisa Fiaola U17s Girls), Keeley Davis (Sydney Roosters, Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup U19s Women).

Corban Baxter (with Davis), Isabelle Kelly (Central Coast Roosters, Lisa Fiaola Cup), Andrew Fifita (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Tarsha Gale Cup) and Boyd Cordner (Sydney Roosters, UNE SG Ball Cup U19s Men) – have coached sides through to the finals in 2025.

It is also the first time Melbourne Storm have made a Junior Reps finals match.

The Eels finished top of the ladder after nine rounds undefeated in UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s Men), eighth in UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s Boys), fifth in Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup, and third in Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup. The Sydney Roosters ‘family’ includes the Central Coast Roosters and the Indigenous Academy Roosters. The Sydney Roosters finished fourth in SG Ball, Central Coast finished second in both Harold Matthews and Lisa Fiaola Cup, and the Indigenous Academy was seventh in Tarsha Gale Cup.

All four Junior Reps feature a top-eight finals format across four weeks starting with Qualifying and Elimination Finals in Week One this Saturday and Sunday (11-12 April).

“Parramatta didn’t make the Under 17s Boys finals or Under 19s Women’s last year, so they had a real look at their pathways,” NSWRL Head of Competitions Yvette Downey said.

“They shuffled things around, made a few new staff appointments and it’s paid off. It’s a credit to Jamie Shephard, who is Head of Pathways, and the work he’s done.

“The Roosters have also done incredible work over the season to maintain their high standards and consistency.”

Westpac NSW Blues Women’s coach John Strange is Head of Female Pathways at the Roosters with James Hanson as Operations manager for both male and female pathways. Steve Deakin is the Head of the Central Coast Academy.

“The Storm also needs to be recognised for the work they are doing as it’s the first time they’ve made a finals series of Junior Reps,” Downey said.

“They have been around for several years but they were run by Victoria Rugby League and were known as the Thunderbolts and then the VRL Storm.

“But last year Melbourne Storm took over the pathways and they should be congratulated for that investment.”

Other highlights after nine rounds are:

Raiders have made the Lisa Fiaola Cup finals in their inaugural season and Fiaola is the club’s Well-Being and Education Manager.
Penrith Panthers have teams in both the Tarsha Gale Cup and Lisa Fiaola Cup without having a NRLW team.
There are three clubs trying to defend their 2024 premierships – Warriors in Harold Matthew Cup, Illawarra Steelers in Tarsha Gale Cup, and Canterbury-Bankstown

Eels Well Placed For Finals Football

The Eels Junior Representative teams recorded three wins from four starts over the weekend, with the results leaving all teams in contention for finals football with just two rounds remaining.

On Saturday, the Harold Matthews and SG Ball Cup teams registered strong victories over the Wests Magpies, with the SG Ball side maintaining their undefeated record.

Meanwhile, the Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale sides had mixed success against the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

The Gale team returned to the winners list when they proved too strong for Wests. Unfortunately, a loss to the Tigers ended the Eels unbeaten run in the Lisa Fiaola Cup.

Harold Matthews Cup

The Eels Harold Matthews Cup team produced a remarkable defensive effort to overcome the Magpies in a tight contest at Lidcombe Oval on Saturday.

Christopher Moala posted the first Eels try when a right side shift inside Wests red zone saw him accelerate past his opposite to touch down near the corner post.

Soon after, Cobi McCloskey went very close to adding the second when he was tackled into touch in-goal.

Following that near try, the Eels defence stood firm against multiple sets in their red zone.

They reaped the benefits of their resilience in their next possession when they drove play down to the Magpies quarter.

Talen Risati, Samuel Polley and Riley Davis combined in an outside/inside play that sent Davis on his way to the line for a converted try.

An inspirational period of defence from the Eels followed once more, as Wests set up camp in the Eels red zone for the next ten minutes.

With just seconds remaining before the break, the Eels had the opportunity to play it safe in their final possession of the half. Instead, they moved the ball to Talen Risati in a bold right side attacking play.

Talen cut through the defence before linking with Cobi McCloskey who then threw an inside pass to Riley Davis who out sprinted the cover defenders to score.

The conversion took the Eels out to a 16 point lead at the break, which was a remarkable scoreline given the possession and territorial advantage enjoyed by the Magpies.

When play resumed in the second half, the Magpies were able to convert their opportunities into points, scoring twice in the first ten minutes.

Now only six points in arrears they continued to apply red zone pressure, with the Eels scramble defence somehow holding them out.

The Eels finally regained the ascendancy on the back of a penalty which allowed them to advance play deep into Wests territory. Once in the red zone, they used the full width of the field in a right side shift that opened the space for Christopher Moala to score.

Parra put the game to bed five minutes later when left centre Cyrus Bloomfield scooped up a loose ball forty metres out and skipped to the right side of the field.

He then linked with Samuel Polley and Christopher Moala before the final pass found Cobi McCloskey for the try.

The 24 to 10 victory was a crucial result for the Eels, leaving them on the cusp of the top eight with two rounds remaining.

They return to Eric Tweedale Stadium next week to take on the Central Coast Roosters.

Eels 24 (Tries: Christopher Moala 2, Riley Davis 2, Cobi McCloskey; Goals: Talen Risati 2) defeated Magpies 10.

SG Ball Cup

The Eels consolidated their place at the top of the SG Ball ladder when they overpowered the Magpies at Lidcombe Oval on Saturday.

Ryda Talagi scored the first of the Eels six tries when he took a hit up inside the Magpies quarter and spun out of the clutches of defenders to ground the ball on the line.

Some extraordinary unstructured play then produced the Eels second try.

After chasing and catching a wide bomb on the Wests quarter line, Aidan Kebourian rolled an offload along the ground to supports.

Quick hands fed the ball to the right to Cameron Bamblett who then kicked the ball back to the left for Aidan Kebourian to regather and dive over in the corner.

Lincoln Fletcher made it consecutive sideline conversions to take the Eels out to a 12 point lead after 14 minutes.

The Magpies struck back with an unconverted try in the right corner, but the Eels were able to establish a commanding lead by scoring two further tries before the break.

Aidan Kebourian grabbed his second try of the match when Lorenzo Talataina and Cameron Bamblett combined to send him over out wide.

Lorenzo Talataina then did it all himself as he stepped and weaved his way through defenders on a thirty metre run to the posts.

At 22 to 4, the Eels hit the sheds in complete control, and they went on with the job after the break by adding two more tries.

Lincoln Fletcher scored the first of these in the 47th minute when he ran off a pass from Lorenzo Talataina inside the Wests quarter and outpaced the defence to the corner.

He then registered his second try of the match by combining with Max Popo on a play to the right of the ruck.

The Magpies posted a converted try in the final ten minutes to take their score to double figures, but the Eels still ran out comfortable winners to continue their undefeated record.

The Eels return to Eric Tweedale Stadium next Saturday when they face the North Sydney Bears.

Lisa Fiaola Cup

The Eels Lisa Fiaola Cup team lost their undefeated status when they fell to the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

Early on, the team was on track to continue their winning ways when they posted the opening two tries of the match.

Temieke Withers crossed first when she feigned to pass in front of the posts, then evaded the Tigers defence in a sharp fifteen metre dash to the line.

Leonia Vei was next to score after the Eels created a period of sustained pressure inside the Tigers red zone.

After taking the first pass off the ruck, Vei stepped and powered her way through defenders in a twenty metre charge to the posts.

With Bailey Ma-Chong adding the extras for both tries, the Eels had established a 12 to nil lead after twenty minutes.

Unfortunately for Parra that lead was short lived as they conceded two tries late in the first half. With the scores locked at the break, it was the Tigers who took all of the momentum into the sheds.

The Tigers were on a roll and went on to establish their dominance by adding the first three tries of the second half.

They found their rhythm in attack and Parra’s indiscretions and errors gifted them far too much territory and possession.

A sixteen point lead was going to be difficult to run down, though the Eels did reduce the margin to ten points when Mitszy Cairns cut through the Tigers goal line defence to score her side’s third try.

However the Tigers had the final say when they crossed just before the siren.

Following that loss, the Eels remain in third place on the ladder.

They’ll be looking to return to the winners list when they face the Steelers this week at Eric Tweedale Stadium.

Tigers 34 defeated Eels 18 (Tries: Temieke Withers, Leonia Vei, Mitszy Cairns; Goals: Bailey Ma-Chong 3).

Tarsha Gale Cup

The Eels Tarsha Gale team ended a short losing streak when they overcame a spirited Tigers side at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

A line break by Tess McWilliams set the platform for the Eels first try when her run took play to the Tigers quarter line.

From there, Taylah Falaniko charged on to a pass from Khyliah Gray, before brushing aside defenders on her way to planting the ball between the posts.

The remainder of the first half became an arm wrestle between the quarter lines, with neither team gaining the ascendancy. As a consequence the score remained at six to nil when half time was called.

Though just the lone try was scored in the first stanza, five more were added after the break.

The first of these came after just five minutes when Avena Racoma Ngata was tackled just short of the right corner post and Mariah Fasavalu-Faamausili dived over from dummy half.

Wests struck back ten minutes later when their prop broke free of Eels defenders to score next to the posts, and with the Eels lead reduced to four points it was game on.

Tess McWilliams was denied a try in the Eels next possession when the ref ruled that she knocked on when grounding the ball in-goal, but it mattered little when Ava Jones scored from dummy half soon after.

Following the kick off, the Eels extended their lead when Khyliah Gray and Matoisha Kalepo combined in a left side shift to send Jessamine Aloalii on a sprint to the corner.

Though the Tigers brought it back to a ten point game with a try in the final seconds, it was the Eels who registered a much needed victory to move to third place on the ladder.

The Eels return to Eric Tweedale Stadium next Saturday when they face the Steelers in the penultimate match of the regular rounds.

Panthers Junior Reps Results Round 8

Brilliant SG Ball Panthers crush Parramatta Eels

The SG Ball Panthers put on a clinic to beat the Parramatta Eels 42-14 at New Era Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win sees the Panthers leapfrog the Eels to secure second place on the ladder, an important confidence boost ahead of the finals.

Captain Luke Hanson was massive in both attack and defence, often making multiple tackles in a row from marker while also getting an assist and a try of his own.

Hanson opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when he sold a fabulous dummy to slice through the defensive line. Conversion by Riley Pollard successful, 0-6.

The Eels hit back in the 5th minute, when they span the ball out to the left-hand side, allowing winger Devonte Vaivela to dive over in the corner. Kick by Ethan Sanders ricocheted off the upright, 4-6.

The Panthers would extend their lead in the 12th minute when a deft grubber close to the line from hooker Moustafa Dirani found Hudson Brown who finished the try off nicely.

Conversion successful, 4-12.

The home team put themselves back in the game in the 19th minute when an attacking bomb found grass, bouncing awkwardly and landing in the hands of centre Richard Penisini who scored the try.

Conversion successful 10-12.

The Panthers would reclaim their 8-point lead in the 23rd minute, as Luke Hanson took the ball deep into the line on the last play before dribbling a beautiful kick in behind the defence for Hotere-Papalii to pounce on.

Conversion successful, 10-18.

The Panthers found themselves on the backfoot for the rest of the first half.

However, fantastic communication and some crunching defence meant they were able to deny the Eels a number of times.

The Eels would be the first to score in the second half, a nice shift to the right put winger Tuvaka Palu over in the 41st minute.

Centre Jirah Liddiard help put his team further in front, making a remarkable leap for a bomb, before miraculously offloading the ball for Jenson Tuaoi to go over untouched. Conversion successful, 14-24

A drop ball by Parramatta in the 52nd minute was picked up by David Afu, who showed tremendous pace to race away 30 metres and put the Panthers up by four more points. Conversion successful, 14-30.

The Panthers would opt to take a penalty from right in front of the goalposts in the 55th minute, giving themselves three converted tries worth of breathing room.

Adding insult to injury, the away team crossed once again in the 60th minute, this time fullback Timothy Sielaff-Burns dove over in the righthand corner to give the Eels a mountain to climb in order to win the game.

Conversion successful, 14-38.

Liddiard showed off his aerial skills once again in the 63rd minute, leaping to take a well-weighted crosskick and planting the ball down for his second try involvement of the day.

Pollards only unsuccessful kick for the afternoon, 14-42.

A 90m intercept try in the dying minutes by Harry Wald has helped the Penrith Panthers get out of jail in the Harold Matthews Cup, beating the Parramatta Eels 22-16 at New Era Stadium.

The Panthers had led 16-4 until an error-riddled second half allowed the Eels to draw level, only for Wald, who finished with a personal tally of 18 points from three tries and three goals, to snatch the win.

It didn’t take long for the Panthers to strike at the start of the game, with Tuaomaliemavaitoelau Patea backing up some skilful offloads to score in the left-hand corner in the third minute.

Wald added the extras to take a 6-0 lead.

An error coming out of trouble presented the Eels with an opportunity to hit back and they did just that through Dominic Farrugia to cut the Panthers lead to 6-4.

The Panthers continued to pressure the Eels defence, coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions in the middle of the half.

Continued pressure on the Parramatta line finally paid off for the Panthers, with a shift to the right sending Harry Wald in to score.

They backed it up five minutes later in similar fashion, with another good shift to Wald resulting in a try in the corner. The winger converted his own try, giving the Panthers a 16-4 lead they took to half time.

The Eels hit back early in the second half, crossing near the posts despite the best efforts of the Panthers defence, cutting the margin back to 16-10.

Repeated errors set in for the Panthers in the second half, however their strong defence kept their lead intact.

A professional foul by Jordan Uta saw the Eels reduced to 12 with 11 minutes remaining, however the Panthers lost Joseph Partch to the sin bin two minutes later.

The Panthers brave defence was finally cracked with six minutes remaining as Zaidas Muagututia crossed from dummy-half, with Farrugia converting from alongside the posts to draw level at 16-all.

Once again defending their own line, the Panthers looked almost certain to crack again, before Wald intercepted and raced 90m to take back the lead with two minutes to go.

He again converted his own try, pushing the lead to 22-16.

Parramatta had only final attacking play on the siren, however the Panthers defence held firm, taking out the thrilling victory.

Tarsha Gale Panthers’ win streak ends

The Penrith Panthers four-game unbeaten run in the Tarsha Gale Cup has been ended by the Parramatta Eels, falling 24-6 at New Era Stadium.

It was an error-riddled performance by the Panthers who now must beat the North Sydney Bears in the final round to remain in finals contention.

The Panthers got off to the perfect start, scoring with their first use of the ball when Yasmine Baker dummied and sliced through the defence in the 3rd minute. Jaida Staben converted to give them a 6-0 advantage.

The good attacking start was matched by their defence, with Marley Cardwell coming up with several big hits in the middle, while their goal line defence came up with some incredible trysavers.

Repeated errors eventually proved too much for the Panthers defence to handle, with Hayley Bell scoring for the Eels in the 23rd minute.

The Panthers left-side defence was breached again in the final seconds of the half, with Lindsay Tui crossing in the corner. Alysha Bell converted both tries from out wide, giving the Eels a 12-6 lead at the break.

An inability to find touch following a penalty was compounded by further errors by the Panthers,

The Eels again made them pay, racing around the Panthers right-edge defence, scoring through Caitlin Peadon to take the score to 18-6.

Another unforced error by the Panthers put them under more pressure and they were punished on their right again, this time by Alysha Bell, who converted her own try from out wide.

Baker came agonisingly close to keeping the Panthers in the contest, held up over the line.

She followed that up with a desperate try-saver in the following set, keeping the score at 24-6, where it remained at full time.

With four rounds of the Harold Matthews, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale Cup in the books, catch up on the 20 major talking points from the weekend, PLUS every result and our 50+ photo gallery.

A MASSIVE round of junior reps action saw competition leaders stamp their authority, unbeaten streaks ended and some upset results as well.

Take a look at what made headlines from a massive round four of the NSWRL junior reps season.

BALMAIN FINDING ITS FEET

The Tigers have won their past two and have put themselves into finals contention in SG Ball.

The manner they’ve gone about it would impress officials the most, hanging in games and winning them at the death.

They were there to be beaten even after they scored the final try, but held solid in some good signs for the road ahead.

NOT PANIC STATIONS FOR THE BULLDOGS… YET

Canterbury has now dropped its past two SG Ball Cup games, but a strong for and against has them still sitting in seventh.

Their next two games are must win however, because their run home is among the toughest in the comp.

In their last three weeks they will face Wests, the Warriors and Penrith, all on the road.

ROOSTERS, STEELERS GAME OF THE YEAR?

The SG Ball clash between the Roosters and Steelers had just about everything.

Stunning tries, big leads, bigger comebacks and a late finish that sent both teams home with a point.

The two played out the first draw for the season, and while it will dent their finals hopes, it was spectacular viewing for the netural.

KNIGHTS PUT SOUTHS TO THE SWORD

Newcastle tuned up for their blockbuster against the Warriors with a dominant win over South Sydney.

They’ve been clinical in their two home games so far this year to set up the second best for and against in the competition, keeping them in fourth spot.

What was most impressive was how quickly they were able to put the game away.

WARRIORS FIND LATE TO REMAIN UNBEATEN

New Zealand had to dig deep on their home soil against a winless and desperate Dragons side, but they did just that.

Trailing by two inside the final 10 minutes, their centres proved too much for St George to handle, with Patrick Moimoi and Sialetili Faeamani getting across the stripe.

They remain deep in the finals hunt and still have a game in hand.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR?

South Sydney looked destined for their third-straight defeat to start the Harold Matthews season trailing 22-6 at halftime.

Whatever was said in the sheds from coach Luke Deller worked wonders.

They scored three tries in the space of 16 minutes after the break, including what would prove to be the matchwinner from captain Daniel Lua, to get on the board in season 2023.

SHARKS REDISCOVER THEIR BITE

After a tough outing against the Roosters last week, they got their revenge on the Central Coast variety.

Cronulla was in full control from the outset in a seven-try effort that keeps them in a lofty ladder spot.

Xavier Singh scored a hat-trick and provided some incredible acrobatics in the process out on his wing.

STEELERS KEEP SEASON ALIVE IN DRAMATIC FASHION

It was a wild day at Morry Breen Oval on the Central Coast with three incredible games, perhaps the Harold Matts clash provided the most drama.

Illawarra was cruising at 20-6 with less than 10 minutes remaining and an extra player on the field due to a sin bin.

Two late Roosters tries kept them on their toes however to set up a grandstand finish, which would ultimately be secured with Tom Kirk.

BULLDOGS UNLEASH ON BEARS

Canterbury wasn’t in a charitable mood coming off the back of their maiden Harold Matts loss of the season.

Five first half tries against the Bears put the game out of reach very early of the visitors at Belmore Oval.

It’s that clinical nature that has them sitting in second and a definite hope of higher honours in the U17s comp.

STEELERS GIVE ROOSTERS A REAL FIGHT

For the first time in 2023 the Roosters Indigenous Academy faced a stern test in the Tarsha Gale Cup.

Illawarra led with less than 15 minutes to go in the contest, keeping their opponents scoreless in the process.

The class of the Roosters shone through however, with two late tries taking their record to a perfect 4-0, with both the best attack and defence in the competition.

DRAGONS GET REWARD FOR EFFORT

No team deserved their first win more than the St George Dragons Tarsha Gale side.

They were beaten at the death in round two and had to settle for a draw last week.

The Dragons opened up a big lead against Cronulla and despite some nervous moments, held their nerve to get the two points they both needed and had earned.

PANTHERS TURN THE CORNER WITH GUTSY DEFENCE

The 34-16 scoreline suggests Penrith eased past Manly to record their first Tarsha Gale Cup win of the season.

It couldn’t be any further from the truth. The Panthers earned their attacking stripes the hard way in a chaotic six minutes before the break.

Up by six, first the Penrith girls held-up wrecking ball Monica Fasavalu-Fa’amausili, then did the same to Wanita Leatherby, before try-bound prop Tafao Asaua was forced into error.

Set to face the struggling Tigers next week, Penrith are one to watch.

RAIDERS SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE

After three weeks on the road, the Raiders returned home with a bang.

Victories against the formidable Magpies in the Matts and SG Ball leave both outfits undefeated at the top of the table.

MATTS DRAGONS CAN’T TAKE A TRICK

The Harold Matts Dragons can’t take a trick. Stuck in 14th after four straight defeats, they’ve proven they can match it with the best in the competition.

In round three they were level with a strong Penrith at half-time, and on the weekend against Parramatta they went to the sheds at 12-all.

From there it quickly unravelled. Omar Dennaoui spent time in the sin bin, and by the time the centre returned Parra had shot clear 24-12.

HAROLD MATTS CONGESTED AT THE TOP

Wests headed to Canberra as frontrunners, now with one loss against their name they’ve slipped down to fourth spot.

Sitting alongside five other sides with three wins and a loss, they’re in good company as the battle for top spots heats up.

ANOTHER TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH FOR BELCONNEN

The big games continue at Belconnen in the SG Ball.

After knocking off the previously undefeated Magpies, Canberra are back on home turf in round four in another top of the table clash, this time against the unbeaten Parramatta Eels.

CLASSY PANTHERS DEFY THE ODDS

Down 20-6 in the second half at Brookvale, Penrith’s unbeaten start to the SG Ball season was on the rocks.

They eventually defied the odds storming home to win 30-20, but it was the brilliance of No.7 Luke Hanson and winger Nick Murphy that saw them turn the corner.

In a short side raid, Hanson sliced through with a show-and-go before Murphy who did the rest. A silky in-and-away left the fullback stranded, and his classy four-pointer put Penrith on the road to recovery.

YOUNG EELS WINGER DINING OUT

Lorima Rokosuka picked up a double in the Eels’ Harold Matts win over the Dragons, making it three straight weeks where the winger has crossed the stripe.

Just as capable on the left or right edge, the youngster is fast making a name for himself as a quality finisher.

TARSHA RAIDERS HAVE PLENTY OF STRIKE

In round three Georgia Willey lit up Brookvale with two tries to help open the Raiders’ season account.

The Australian Schoolgirls fullback repeated the feat against the Tigers, but was topped on the score sheet by centre Lara Cosgrove who shredded Wests’ defence on the way to scoring an impressive hat-trick.

BEARS NOT FAR OFF THE PACE

Despite sitting in eighth spot on the Tarsha Gale ladder with a draw and two losses, North Sydney’s first win can’t be far away.

If defence wins matches, then the Bears are on the right track. They’ve only conceded 46-points, the fourth least in the competition.

ROUND FOUR WRAP + GALLERY

AS we approach the midway point of the NSWRL junior reps season, round four has seen some big movers and shakers across all competitions.

Catch up on all the action so far from a huge weekend of rugby league:

TIGERS CAUSE BOILOVER AT BELMORE

LATE brilliance from co-captain Josh Feledy has lifted the Balmain Tigers to an upset 20-16 win over Canterbury at Belmore Oval in the SG Ball Cup.

With scores tied at 16-all and under seven minutes left of play, a magical flick pass from the centre to his outside man William Malloy saw him cross in the corner to wrestle back the lead.

It wasn’t game over though, with a regathered short kick-off giving the Bulldogs a golden opportunity to snatch victory late in the piece.

But it was to be Balmain’s day, holding solid when it counted to give them consecutive wins after starting the year 0-2.

Feledy praised the way his forwards were able to match it with their Canterbury counterparts, and how they’ve been able to turn their season around.

“They’re a big pack the Bulldogs and we stuck in there right until the last minute and got away with the win,” Feledy said.

“We always spoke during the pre-season that we only played one trial game, and we wanted to build throughout the season itself.

Now we’ve got two wins on the trot

“Now we’ve got two wins on the trot. That’s a great win for us boys and we’ll take that into next week.”

Feledy is one of the young talents of this Tigers side, and looks set to graduate up to Jersey Flegg level at the conclusion of the U19s year.

“I’ve been a bit slow the first couple of games but picked it up today,” he said.

“I’m really focusing on what I need to do for the team and not really as an individual.

“Definitely hoping to move up to Flegg and then see what happens at the end of the year. But I’m just loving my footy here at the moment.”

In what was a game of changing fortunes, the Tigers struck inside the opening two minutes and opened up a 10-point lead midway through the first half when Feledy touched down in the 18th minute.

The Bulldogs struck back however, scoring the next two and hitting the front with 23 minutes left to play.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Canterbury on their home turf however, with their Harold Matthews Cup side scoring a big 44-8 win over North Sydney.

The Bulldogs raced the clock throughout the first half and opened up a commanding 28-4 advantage through the opening 30 minutes.

Halfback Mitchell Woods was strong again, posting two tries and a personal tally of 20 points.

PANTHERS RUN HOT WINNING ALL THREE AT BROOKVALE

An outstanding first half defensive effort paved the way for Penrith to outclass Manly 34-16 in an entertaining Tarsha Gale clash.

Chasing their first win of the season, Penrith overcame a massive Manly middle on the way to a comprehensive seven tries to three victory.

Returning after missing last week, towering Sea Eagles prop Tafao Asaua threatened to dominate from the get-go, barging over for her third try in as many starts to open a 6-4 advantage.

After regaining the lead at 10-4, Penrith then withstood raid after Manly raid, holding the ball over the line on three separate occasions in a challenging six-minute workout.

The reward came on the stroke of halftime, when a Montana McLean bust was finished off by five-eighth Taya Lazare.

Trailing 14-6, Manly made a hash of the second half restart allowing Penrith’s exciting speedsters to spring into action. Centre Bella McEachern scored the first of four Penrith second half tries that included a double to Piper Spackman.

In the Harold Matts, the young Panthers were never headed in winning their third straight game, a 24-18 win over Manly.

The Sea Eagles scored first through centre George Mapuilesua, but with five of the next six tries including a double to Cameron Bamblett, Penrith jumped clear 24-10 with 15 minutes still to play.

The home side rallied, and a couple of consolation tries saw them finish within six-points at the final siren.

Penrith extended their unbeaten run to four games

In the SG Ball, Penrith extended their unbeaten run to four games, but it was anything but one-way traffic against a committed Sea Eagles.

The 30-20 win sees Penrith jump to third on the ladder. For the winless Sea Eagles it was a case of what might have been.

Manly fired out of the blocks with a blistering three-try opening to lead 14-0.

And another to hooker Jake Fulton saw them head to the sheds up 20-6 an in total command.

The change of ends sparked the Panthers, prop Luron Patea finishing with two tries as the Penrith boys stormed to victory with five unanswered second-half tries.

RAIDERS’ GOLDEN HOMECOMING

In a battle of the unbeaten Harold Matts heavyweights, Canberra jumped to top spot on the table after clipping the Magpies’ wings 28-14.

On home turf for the first time this season, Raiders centre Harry Hudson had the locals cheering with the opening try in just the third minute.

Wests’ reply was swift, and the reigning premiers led 10-6 after 15 minutes following back-to-back tries to winger Ali Hicham Karnib and skipper Luke Laulili’i.

From there, it was all Canberra. After wrestling back the ascendancy, the Raiders then went on a points blitz of their own, scoring four unanswered tries either side of the interval to open an unassailable 28-10 lead.

In another clash of two undefeated frontrunners, the SG Ball Raiders flexed their muscles with a comprehensive 40-12 demolition of the highly touted Wests Magpies.

Classy backrower Jaxon Lavender had a day

Classy backrower Jaxon Lavender had a day to remember, he crossed twice on a day that saw playmaker Keahn Skipps finish with a personal 16-point haul.

In a fiery ending, with five minutes remaining and down 30-12, Wests lost Zakauri Clarke and Tallyn Da Silva to the sin bin.

With a two-man advantage, Canberra rubbed more salt into the Magpies’ wounds closing out the afternoon with a further two tries.

In a one sided Tarsha Gale clash, Canberra swept aside the Wests Tigers 44-4 in a Belconnen masterclass.

On what proved to be a magic day for the Green Machine’s speedsters, Lara Cosgrove crossed in the first half as the home side jumped to a 10-0 lead.

In an eight tries to one rampage, Cosgrove notched a well deserved hat-trick in the final minute of the match, while star fullback Georgia Willey crossed for a double of her own in Canberra’s second straight win.

For the Tigers, the loss rounded out a tough fortnight where they’ve conceded 70-points and scored only one try.

RABBITOHS COMEBACK HIGHLIGHTS MIXED DAY

The Rabbitohs produced one of the comebacks of the junior reps season to knock off Newcastle at Kurri Kurri.

Trailing 22-6 at halftime, South Sydney hit back with three unanswered tries to pick up their first win of the Harold Matthews season 24-22.

Their three tries came in a 12-minute span in the second half, with captain Daniel Lua’s 46th minute touchdown proving the difference.

They couldn’t replicate the feat in the SG Ball Cup however, with the Knights running out 42-4 winners.

Back-to-back tries to Jayden Harris and Elijah Salesa Ieaumoana gave them a 14-0 lead at the break that the visitors were unable to overcome.

Ethan Ferguson brought up his double, before Jayden Harris came off the bench and scored a hat-trick to cap off the big win.

Newcastle maintained pace with the top Tarsha Gale Cup teams after downing Souths 22-6.

Yilara Widders struck first for the Rabbitohs after just three minutes, but that is where the joy would end, as the Knights struck twice on both sides of halftime to keep their good form in 2023.

EELS’ KELLYVILLE HAT-TRICK

The junior Eels had a day out at Kellyville, finishing in front in all three grades.

The Tarsha Gale girls kicked off the day with a hard-fought 16-6 win over the North Sydney Bears.

With both sides coming off a last start draw, it was no surprise to see the scores locked at six apiece just minutes before the break.

Bears centre Grace-Lee Weekes crossed to level the scores in the 21st minute, following an early try to Eels backrower Kalisi Mahe.

But it was Parra’s super-sub Nella Lima who proved the hero, planting the ball over the line just before the interval to open a handy six-point buffer.

North Sydney had a golden chance to counter after the break, but with Eels centre Caitlin Peadon in the sin bin they came away empty-handed.

Siulolovao Vave officially shut the door on a Bears comeback, the winger’s late try enough to round out Parra’s second victory of the season.

In the Matts, Parramatta had to wait until after halftime before overcoming a depleted Dragons 36-12.

The winless Saints ran in three unconverted tries

The winless Saints ran in three unconverted tries to match Parra 12-all in an enthralling opening stanza.

But their hopes began to unravel two minutes after halftime with the dismissal of Omar Dennaoui to the sin bin.

During the centre’s absence, Parra try sneak Lorima Rokosuka bagged a double as the Eels shot clear 24-12. Another two tries saw the Eels ice an emphatic third straight win.

Parramatta have extended their unbeaten run in the SG Ball competition to four after they comfortably accounted for the Bears 44-12.

Hooker Matthew Arthur and fullback Te Hurinui Twidle crossed early for the blue-and-gold’s before Norths levelled at 12-all following tries to Malakye Enasio and Emmet Nicholls.

The second half was all Parra. Te Hurinui Twidle added another two tries as the relentless Eels piled on another six.

Arthur grabbed a double, while with six conversions and a try, five-eighth Ethan Sanders finished with 16-points as the Eels jumped to second place on the ladder.

ROOSTERS, STEELERS SHARE SPOILS

The Steelers gave the Roosters Indigenous Academy their toughest test to date in the Tarsha Gale Cup, but ultimately it wasn’t enough, going down 12-6 on the Central Coast.

Mia-Rose Walsh gave the visitors the perfect start with a try in the second minute in a low-scoring first half.

The Roosters finally cracked it in the 48th minute through Eliza Lopamaua, before Skyla Adams sealed the result with seven minutes to play.

Illawarra was able to hit back in the Harold Matthews however, fending off a late Roosters charge to prevail 24-18.

The Steelers looked to be in cruise control with 10 minutes to play, leading by 14 points and with the Roosters reduced to 12 men with Brandon Beetson sent to the sin bin.

Toby Rodwell and Zach Fittler had other ideas, helping them back to 20-18 inside the final four minutes, before Steelers fullback Tom Kirk extinguished the comeback.

In one of the games of the season, the SG Ball sides couldn’t be split, with the Roosters and Steelers tied at 24-all.

The home side struck first and opened up a big 18-0 lead after 40 minutes, before three tries in nine minutes had Illawarra back on level pegging.

Ethan Roberts gave the Roosters the lead once again, but it was Jett Liu who spoiled the party and salvaged a point with six minutes remaining.

CRONULLA HITS BACK HARD

Cronulla is back on track in the Harold Matthews Cup following a surging 36-6 defeat of the Central Coast Roosters at home.

The writing was on the wall with Kaden Gardner scoring inside a minute, and the Sharks taking a comfortable 16-0 lead at the break.

That was extended further after halftime, and when winger Xavier Singh brought up his hat-trick, the result was safely in their keeping.

Eels Junior Reps squads confirmed

The Parramatta Eels are delighted to unveil their 2023 Junior Representative squads, in both the male & female teams, for the upcoming SG Ball (U19s), Harold Matthews (U17s), and Tarsha Gale Cup (U19s) competitions.

Squads were selected from the 2022 Junior League season, as well as internal training and trial matches.

Super Saturday – A Massive Day Of Eels Pathways Trials

It was a massive day on Saturday for Parramatta’s junior pathways with action aplenty at two venues.

The Harold Matthews, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale squads took the field against the Raiders in Goulburn.

Quite a number of players were rested from the hit out across the Matts and Ball teams, and supporters would be aware that key players in the Ball were not available as they have been training with the NRL and Flegg squads.

Furthermore, only 21 Tarsha Gale players were used in their trial as compared to around 33 for the Raiders.

Despite a couple of injuries it was a very positive first run for the Tarsha Gale squad. An 8 tries to 1 victory gave coach Ryan Walker plenty to smile about.

In attack, the completion rate on yardage sets was high and the number of tries speaks for itself.

In defence, the team was aiming for a strong attitude towards first contact and they delivered on that with the only Raiders try coming late in the match. My thanks to Ryan for this feedback.

In the Harold Matts, the squad dished out an injury free 12 tries to 2 thumping of the Raiders.

All up, ten players were absent, with the Raiders also resting some. Those who took the field were instructed to work on their push, marker pressure, kick chase and kick pressure.

The consequence of such a comprehensive victory was some selection headaches for coach Chris Howard.

Fortunately they have two more trials to sort out their round one team. My thanks to Chris for his feedback.

It was a narrow five tries to four loss for the Eels SG Ball team in the closest trial of the day. Something like 9 players were absent due to spending the pre-Christmas period training with the NRL and Jersey Flegg squads.

According to “Mark In The Stands”, the game got a bit scrappy and Parra fell behind five tries to two, before adding the final two tries.

Whilst these clashes were taking place in Goulburn, I made the much shorter drive to Westmead to catch the internal trials in the Under 14, 15 and 16 Development squads.

To give some idea of the scale of the operation, 142 players from 16 different Parramatta District Junior Clubs were involved.

Each age squad had allocated coaches, trainers, equipment manager and team manager.

Matches were played simultaneously throughout the morning on both of the Marist Brothers fields, with each game broken into 20 minute thirds.

Players were expected to turn up in full Eels training uniform, including caps.

Teams wore different Parra jerseys from recent years, with the colours either predominantly blue or predominantly gold.

Players wore the shorts and socks of their junior clubs, highlighting the multitude of Parramatta Junior Rugby League Clubs represented.

I watched the matches on the “upper” field which involved the older age groups – 15s and 16s.

Rather than naming individuals which would be unfair on the basis of one internal trial, I can report that the standard of football was actually higher than I expected.

The forward clashes that I witnessed were quite physical as the boys looked to win the ruck for their team.

There are some big units coming through the pathways and the collisions were evidence that they didn’t hold back.

Trials like this are an interesting watch because young players have the temptation of wanting to impress and take as many runs as they can.

However, there were enough players sticking to a team and role ethos for the staff to gauge attitudes as well as ability.

The spine have a tough job in these games. They handle the ball the most, but if they don’t give sufficient opportunities to their outside men, they won’t do themselves any favours.

Fortunately the spine did quite a decent job in the teams and I thought a couple of them showed quite a bit of promise.

Consequently there were some exciting plays executed on wide shifts.

My highlights both came from long range intercepts/turn overs of possession. One was shut down with an outstanding chase. The other resulted in a try with pace on display from the scorer.

My congratulations to those responsible for staging the trial given the logistics and the pathways staffing required across both Goulburn and Westmead.

I’d also like to give a shout out to the players for the tough, competitive footy that was played in the right spirit, and to the families in attendance for the respectful way that they supported their boys.

Finally, given the number of players involved and the spread of junior clubs represented, I’m confident that Parra is looking to cast their net right across their catchment area.

There will always be talent that goes elsewhere, but having such extensive investment in Development squads can only be a good thing. Opening up such opportunities is essential in minimising the loss of talented young players to other systems.

Return of Lisa Fiaola Cup key to strengthening women’s pathways

Creating the link between U17s and U19s girls wanting to continue to play Rugby League was further strengthened this week at the Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day at Tuggerah’s Central Coast Regional Sporting Complex.

Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues head coach Kylie Hilder, who is also the NSWRL’s Female Pathways Manager, was on hand to see what the talent pool looks like this year.

There were 15 sides playing on Tuesday 27 September under the watchful eye of Hilder with several Sky Blues players helping in a coaching consultant role

“We don’t have winners coming out of the day. It was more about girls turning up and having a game of footy,” Hilder said.

“We’re trying to create that next step in the pathway. We need to fill that void in that younger age group before Tarsha Gale.”

The Harvey Norman Tasha Gale Cup for U19s has been part of the NSWRL calendar since 2018. Twelve clubs took part in the 2022 season with the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy beating the Newcastle Knights 12-10 in the grand final.

Hilder said it was her hope that an U17s competition could be set up running in tandem with the U19s.

“We need to accommodate these younger girls and watching them today I can tell you there’s some extremely good talent,” she said.

It was the first Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day in three years – the previous two being cancelled due to COVID-19.

“There were only about five teams back then,” Hilder said. “But the standard and level here is extremely impressive. Looking at some of these girls it looks like they’ve been playing for five years already.”

Another plan on the horizon is starting a Sky Blues Academy, where players from the Lisa Fiaola would be identified and invited to train there.

This week games consisted of 10-minute halves and teams were spread across three pools. Each team played four matches with a total of 360 females taking part in the event.

Teams came from Parramatta Eels, Central Coast Roosters, Victoria Storm, Newcastle Knights, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, Illawarra Steelers, Penrith Panthers, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Northern Tigers, Northern Rivers Titans, St George Dragons, North Coast Bulldogs, Western Rams, and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.
