England and Wales will meet in Neath in a fortnight to decide the U16s Four Nations title after both convincingly won their round two games.

England dominated from the off, building a 40-0 half time lead against Ireland in Widnes, fullback Jack Bowden finishing with 18 points from two tries and five goals.

Centre Jonah Carter claimed a hat trick, and Billy Buster-Knight and Jaiden Udbegbe were also on the scoresheet again, fellow try scorer Ryan Cunliffe also impressing in the pack.

Ireland showed commendable courage to open the scoring in the second half, centre Joe Clarke converting his own score.

Wales also started impressively, establishing a 22-point early lead facing Scotland in Merthyr Tydfil and they also led 40-0 at the break. Winger Alfie Davies opened the scoring and finished with three of Wales’s 13 tries, Jack Parrott claiming 16 points, including six goals.

Centre Max Phillips grabbed a brace in the first half and lively scrum half Will Mordecai did likewise in the second.

The game spilled over just before the hour, Danny Jones – who had scored minutes before – being dismissed for striking and Scotland’s Lachlan McKelvey sinbinned for his part in the fray.

Scotland received a penalty after the incident and Reece McAdam kicked it from long range to ensure they had points on the board.

In the U17s friendly international also at Merthyr, a fine second half performance by Wales saw them home 50-28 against Scotland.

The hosts were 20-18 ahead at the end of a tightly fought first half, each side fielding eleven debutants, but two tries in three minutes on the re-start from centre Evan Benjamin, and a further one from Matthew Clatworthy with his second and 20 points, saw Wales home.

Benjamin completed a second half hat trick, hooker Zach Robbins with a first half brace for Wales including opening the scoring.

Declan Smith and Ollie Watkins-Smith’s touchdowns and two Tom Glover goals saw Scotland hit back to lead, Joseph Davies and Finlay Stamford also crossing for the visitors.

An Elliot Williams try and Benjamin goal bringing up the half century for the young Welsh.

Wales u16s complete double over Ireland

Wales defeated Ireland in the U16s and Students Four Nations tournaments, in a doubleheader held at the Westmanstown Sports Complex, Dublin.

Their U16s extended their unbeaten run to ten matches with a 64-20 win, the Students triumphing 50-0.

There was nothing between the sides for the opening half hour of the U16s clash, skipper Charley Eatly – who finished with four touchdowns – and hooker Zac Nottingham crossed early.

Jack Parrott converting both to give the visitors an early 12-0 lead; Paddy White, winger Noah Walsh and Max Cooney reply for Ireland, Joseph Clarke converting two to put them 16-12 in front.

Leighton Clarke and Rhys Anthony replied for Wales, but Ireland were only 22-20 adrift when Callum McDonald went over before the break.

The second half was one-way traffic, second rower Eatly superb, while Frazer Redman, Jacob Maund, Scott Hewitt and Nottingham again also went over.

Wales U16s head coach, Tom Marsh, said: “There was some high-quality rugby on display from both teams.

Ireland built momentum well in the first half, in the second, we started to play more to our game plan and completed our sets much better.

“It was also really encouraging to see the continued development of the game in Ireland, with 12 Irish-born players included in their squad.”

Wales students were dominant throughout, skipper, centre Mason Phillips leading the way with four successive touchdowns as the visitors built a 24-0 half time lead.

Wales posted another five tries, including one each from debutants Olly Darlington and Kian Lloyd in the second forty.

“Preventing a never-say-die Ireland from scoring was a great achievement in warm conditions in Dublin,” noted Wales students head coach, Clive Griffiths.

“We now turn our attention to Scotland at Merthyr on Sunday, 7 June. We’re not going to underestimate them as they always give us a competitive match.”

Ireland pathways coach, Wayne Kerr, noted: “It was a tough day for the lads. We had a few out there that hadn’t played league before and it was the team’s first hit out together.

We started well and completed high which was a goal for the team.

“The biggest positive was that the lads never gave up and kept competing for the full 80 minutes, that’s something to bring forward for the rest of the tournament.”

Wales and England Community Lions emerged triumphant in the U16s and U18s Four Nations competitions respectively.

For Wales it was the third time in succession they have won the U16s title, beating England 18-0 in the deciding game at Halton Farnworth Hornets.

The margin of defeat meant that Ireland clinched second spot on points’ difference in the closest competition to date since the annual tournament was introduced in 2023.

“The players have worked very hard for six months to get to this point” noted Wales head coach Paul Berry.

“In the decider we were very good in the first twenty minutes before it became a scrappy game in the heat, but that’s the sign of a champion team that you can still come up with the win.”

A domestic quota was put in place and exceeded in all games with at least six home-produced players being involved in the matchday squads, demonstrating progression in all of the countries and a reduction in the reliance on heritage players.

Biennial U18s tournament

The biennial U18s tournament, which alternates with the European U19s championship, saw England go through undefeated.

“We saved our best performance to the end for the winner takes all game against Wales, keeping them to zero,” commented England coach, Gary Hewer.

England and Wales are more dominant at this age group owing to more developed domestic competition, but again the domestic quota was exceeded by all four nations.

“It is fantastic to see the U16s and U18s Four Nations Competitions continuing to flourish and improve in standard,” said IRL head of membership and competitions, David Butler.

“This year’s competitions have raised the bar in terms of standard and awareness, with all sides focussing their efforts on promoting the fixtures and increasing the coverage and we’ve seen some very healthy attendances at games.

We will review collectively over the next couple of months and start the planning again for next year.”

Wales u16’s make history

Wales make history becoming first u16 four nations champs

Wales became the first-ever Four Nations champions at under 16s level after beating England Lions 38-18 in Leigh writes Andy Morgan.

The victory left Wales unbeaten at the top of the standings after big wins over Ireland and Scotland earlier this year.

Wales ran in seven tries in a comprehensive win, with Henry Parker’s try and five goals contributing 14 of Wales’ points.

It all started as early as the fifth minute when Nathan Davies went over for Wales’ first try and Parker converted.

England soon levelled after a good set that saw Nathaniel Parker score, with Jack Bibey converting.

But after that, Wales took control and were 28-6 up at half-time thanks to tries from Joseph Johnson, Jake Nottingham, Henry Parker and Kaden Johnson, all scored in 20 minutes before the break. Parker converted three of them.

England couldn’t recover

England couldn’t recover from that and were further frustrated after their coach was sent to the stands and Bibey was given a yellow card.

Jacob Jones managed a further try during the ten minute spell when they had a one-player advantage to put the game beyond England’s reach.

But that didn’t stop the home side for attempting a come-back. Tries from Jayden Aaron and Lucas Mulqueeny, both improved by Bibey brought the score back to 32-18

However Wales sealed their victory seven minutes before the end whe Jacob Morris dived in under the sticks and Parker converted.

Under 16s head coach, Paul Berry, said: “The lads deserved the win today and I think we’ve been the most consistent team all year in the competition.

The performances we’ve had have been building for a pperiod of time, leading to a winner takes all game today.

“The collective effort over the last few months has really paid dividends.”

Their win puts them top of the table

Their win puts them top of the table with two wins out of three and a points difference of plus 44.

Ireland and Scotland meet at the end of October and both are on negative points differences, Ireland on minus 14 and Scotland on minus 28, so a big win is needed by one of the Celtic nations to take the title.

Wales, who are now guaranteed second or third place in the table, went 12-0 down early on in the game through Dylan Grears and Tom Farren with Harley Nelson converting both, but a Harrison Doe try in the corner just before the break gave them hope.

England quickly extended their lead as five minutes into the second half, they were 22-4 up. First Joshua Blinkhorn scored near the corner, then Devan Sharp’s try under the sticks made it easy for George Jamieson to convert.

The Wales boys refused to give up and Alex Banks’ try and Alex Banks’ try, converted by Llewellyn Hawkes, brought them back into the game.

But England sealed the game as Blinkhorn scored a brace to complete his hat-trick with Jamieson converting once. Jayden Grey got a late consolation try for Wales that Hawkes improved.
