France claim European u19s title

France claimed their second European U19s title, comprehensively defeating holders England 48-12 in the deciding game at the CREPS high performance facility, Font Romeu in the Pyrenees, to end the tournament unbeaten.

England scored within nine seconds through prop Jake Lerigo, but the hosts led 26-12 at the break and were excellent in the second period keeping their rivals scoreless and posting tries from stand off Tom Zitter, with a brace, Ilan Boualem and Charly Martinez.

“For us it is amazing,” said France head coach Remi Casty.

“We have waited a long time for this, we lost the last two finals and tried hard to put that right.

England was tough in the first half but we stuck to our plan, won the collisions and got into positions to score.

“We have a really good group and they deserve to be European Champions.

The event has been incredible for all the teams, so well organized, wonderful facilities, quality food, everything was good and we showed France can stage a wonderful tournament.”

England led 12-6 after 20 minutes, but with Zitter impressive France centre Giodarno Descalzi’s first half hat trick gave his side the edge and they dominated thereafter.

“It wasn’t to be, we worked hard but France had some really strong, physical athletes across the park,” said England head coach Gary Hewer.

“They wore us down coming in wave after wave, and it was one of those days when we were hanging in at times.

We made them work hard for their win, the lads represented us well, so I’m proud.”

In the other round three matches, Wales finished third when they defeated Scotland 58-28, scoring ten tries all from different players.

Rhys Hughes, Jacob Morris, Joshua Gabrielson, Jacob Jones, Oscar Jones and Ethan Williams all went over in the first half to establish a winning 34-8 lead.

Scotland battled bravely to the end despite the sin binning of Max Erasmus around the hour mark.

In the relegation encounter, an astonishing seven tries from hooker Cruz Death saw Ukraine overcome Serbia 54-36, for whom Kai Saric claimed a hat trick. Ukraine’s Zac Gedz finished with 22 points from two tries and seven goals.

France, England and Wales pick up wins in opening round of European U19s Championships

England, France and Wales made impressive starts to the U19s European Championship in the first round of matches held at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the French Pyrenees yesterday (Sunday).

Full back Eligh Wilkinson scored a first half hat trick and landed seven goals as holders England defeated Ukraine 70-8, Rio Walker and Zac Bennett each with two of their total of 14 tries. England head coach, Gary Hewer, commented:

“The boys have responded really well to the hot conditions and given a thorough performance against a very resilient Ukraine side who never stopped for the full 80 minutes.

“From a coaching point of view, it’s disappointing to concede a try but the effort and determination that the Ukrainians put in, and with the friendship and bonds we’ve created over the last four or five years, they deserved it.”

Hewer added: “We’ll utilise the whole squad over our group games but some of them put their hands up today showing what they can offer.”

Hooker Cruz Death claimed Ukraine’s late try, head coach Artur Martyrisian, noted: “It was a good experience for our team. We have not had a lot of time to train together and set aside our domestic championship because so many players are in the army.

“Great thanks to our heritage players because, without them, we might not have been able to participate.”

Leny Stacul was the French star with four tries as they beat Scotland 96-6. The host nation crossed 16 times in all, back rower Adrian De La Rose with a try treble, Thibault Guttierez kicking a perfect 15 conversions.

Scotland were reduced to 12 men in the 36th minute following a sending off.

In the third match, Wales held on to deny Serbia 52-30, Regan Preece with three tries and Kevan Phillips claiming 24 points from two tries and eight out of nine goals.

Wales head coach, Gary Dunn said of the victory: “I was pleased with the result more than the performance, there are loads of aspects to improve on.

“There were some good individual tries, and I can’t fault any of the effort, but we need to analyse this before we face England on Wednesday, Serbia were a little unknown to us.”

Serbia had three players sinbinned, scrum half Tyson Walker with two of their tries and a total of 18 points.

“I’m proud of the boys, both domestic and heritage players,” noted head coach Vladislav Dedic.

“We had to rally dig deep against a good side. The sinbins harmed us but when it was 13 on 13, we were the better side. We need to work on our discipline.”

Two tries from prop Miller Dalton – his second in the final minute – saw England’s community Lions retain the European Rugby League U19s title with a dramatic 15-8 win over France, after a sensational final at a rainy FK Radnicki Stadium in Belgrade.

There was little between the sides throughout, France leading 8-7 on the hour mark after clawing back England’s 7-0 lead at the break, until Dalton’s late intervention, powering over from close in between the posts to seal victory.

“The performance was outstanding, I couldn’t fault the efforts of any of the players,” said jubilant England U19s head coach Gary Hewer.

“They kept turning up for each other for the full 80 minutes. We’ve grown into this competition from the start and been on a journey for almost 18 months to achieve this.”

Hewer added: “We were always under pressure, but this group is so close knit they just kept turning up no matter that the French kept coming at us and it showed the passion for the shirt.”

After an intense but scoreless opening quarter, with both sides having early tries ruled out, player of the match Dalton opened the scoring with a well-rehearsed move seeing him crash over, George Jamieson adding the conversion.

France went on concerted attack, England fullback Josh Langley cleaning up superbly in goal, but the young Tricolors could not convert it into points as tenacious scrambling defence kept them at bay.

With half time approaching, England captain Devan Sharp added a drop goal to edge his side to a two-score lead.

The intensity went up at the start of the second period, England finding themselves down to 12 men as Marcus Geener was sin binned for a professional foul after he hung on too long following a French breakaway.

France failed to take advantage of the extra player, but shortly after Geener’s return Clement Martin found himself in space and put Matis Jammes away for their opening score.

Mateo Jiminez-Lopez’s conversion bringing France back to within one point.

A penalty on the hour-mark saw Jiminez-Lopez move his side ahead for the only time, England spurning a chance to score shortly afterwards, fumbling a kick with the line open.

The lead changed hands again when England were awarded a penalty for a shoulder charge, Jameieson taking the two points on offer, before Miller settled matters.

France U19s head coach, Remi Casty, noted:

“The best team deserved their win. They made less mistakes than us, our discipline with and without the ball was poor and although we fought hard to come back, we left ourselves too much to do.”

England to face France in European u19s Championship Final – reports

Holders England Community Lions will play France at the FK Radnicki Stadium, Belgrade on Saturday (kick off 6pm, local time) to decide the winners of the 2024 European U19s Championship.

It is a repeat of the 2022 decider in Italy which the Lions won 14-12, however, in the previous tournament – also held in the Serbian capital in 2018 – the French emerged victorious 26-24.

England qualified with a 52-4 win over Ukraine in the first semi final, posting nine tries, Marcus Geener and Daniel Knott both with doubles, on another swelteringly hot day.

“The scoreline doesn’t represent the hard work the Ukrainians put into that game,” said England U19s head coach Gary Hewer.

“It was extremely tough and they never stopped coming at us, they really dug deep and caused us several threats.

“We’ve worked hard on execution and taking our chances and that showed. We came with one aim, to win the tournament, and we’ve now got that opportunity.”

Ukraine led thanks to an early Ihor Yefanov penalty but England were 30-4 up at the break, the pick of their tries from scrum half Devan Sharp who showed three dummies to jink his way over.

To their enormous credit Ukraine kept England out for the third quarter but succumbed to three late long range tries.

Ukraine U19s head coach, Dan Beardshaw, commented:

“We were against a well-organised, experienced side who are so good at what they do but I’m so proud of the efforts of my players, especially in scramble defence.

“For 20 minutes of the second half the score was 0-0 and we caused them a lot of problems. Attacking-wise, we’re not yet smart enough but the boys are going to take huge experience from that for the next game.”

In the other semi final, France had to work incredibly hard to overcome a gallant Scotland side who were in contention until two minutes from time, when Wassim Mouelhi’s try and Mateo Jimenez-Lopez’s fifth conversion saw their side home 30-18.

“It was as competitive as we expected,” said France U19s head coach Remi Casty. “It was red hot and there was a lot of indiscipline and that is something we are going to have to change for the final.”

In a feisty clash, five players were sinbinned in all, three for the French who took a first minute lead through Giovanni Descalzi Ganthier. They were 16-6 in front at the break thanks to Yllan Mongay picking up a loose ball and Baptiste Pourchi pouching a clever kick to the corner, hooker Bailey Schneider replying for the young Bravehearts.

France eased out to a 16-point advantage at the start of the second half but quickfire touchdowns to Jacob Grierson and Oscar Ellicott-McCulloch set up the dramatic finish.

Scotland U19s head coach, Leigh Beattie, noted: “We knew it would be a tough ask, but we had a gameplan and we stuck to it very, very well. The desire and heart the lads showed was amazing and they deserve all the plaudits.”

USA Young Hawks

In the opening game of the day, USA Young Hawks, in their first tournament, finished fifth overall after defeating Serbia 40-12, scoring three tries in a blistering opening 14 minutes. George Tupou, USA Young Hawks head coach, said:

“Serbia are a big team but we had better preparation this time, came ready to play and the boys showed their desire out there.”

Logan Myers, Drayson Moliga and impressive stand off Chris Malo with the first of his hat trick all crossed inside a quarter of an hour, Filip Cirkovic stopping the onslaught with his score.

Two Malo tries in ten minutes after the break ensured the win, Edin Mehmedi restoring some pride for the hosts when he powered his way through to score between the posts.

“We were better than our last performance,” commented Serbia U19s head coach Vladislav Dedic. “We showed up, scored two good tries and battled through the heat.”

On Saturday’s finals day, USA will face Ukraine (kick off 2pm) and Serbia take on Scotland (kick off 4pm) in ranking matches before the final.

All games can be watched on the European Rugby League facebook page.

England CL Under 19s v Brazil

England Community Lions Under 19s hold off Brazil Challenge

England CL Under 19s v Brazil Pics by Ben Challis

Ruskin Park hosted a historical first game between England Community Lions Under 19s and a Brazil open-age select side.

This game came just a week after the Lions had been named Four Nations Champions.

Full-time: 18-10

The Brazil camp was hit with issues ahead of the contest, with several heritage players dropping out and a host of UK-based players being drafted in right up until the morning of the game.

The visitors boasted some players with Super League, Championship, and League One club experience and posed a real test for the Lions.

Initially, the older side threatened to get away from their hosts when Kellen Wood was alert around the dummy half and surged over before adding the conversion to earn his team an early 0-6 advantage after five minutes.

Gradually the Lions came into the contest with the likes of Marcus Geener, Keane Elms and Luke Sutcliffe working hard defensively before Miller Dalton barrelled over from close range in the tenth minute and George Jameson goaled.

Harry Sheridan forced a drop out with a delicate chip behind the goal line that was well followed by his team-mates.

Lions built pressure before a scrum move after 23 minutes saw Sheridan put Jacob Rushworth in at the corner and Jameson goaled once more to open a 12-6 advantage.

The hosts then lost Elmes with injury but maintained their concentration to lead at the break.

The second half started well for the visitors with Alex Davidson moving the ball and their pack getting stuck in.

Before the Lions gradually turned things in their favour again when Scott Simmons brought Dylan Grear back inside on an unstoppable line to score at the side of the posts and Jameson added his third goal to make it 18-6.

The Brazil team won the ball back from the kick-off and moved into range before Henry Davies steamed over. It proved too far wide for Wood to goal but at 18-10, the contest was still in the melting pot after 54 minutes.

Once again the Lions relished their defensive duties and held Brazil firm with eventual Man-of-the-Match Sheridan getting his side out of a couple of potential issues before three times having opportunities to add points.

However, Rushworth couldn’t take advantage and Fletcher Holgate and Sutcliffe were hauled down, and Daniel Knott was just denied after he sped into an opening.

Vice-captain Devan Sharp and skipper Ollie Smart also enjoyed big games. Alfie Hough was sin-binned near the end for striking out, but the Lions kept their nerve.

Brazil, with Jorge Cabral unstinting, kept going until the end with the Lions’ defence and greater communication seeing them come away with the victory. In addition to Cabral, Brazil were well served by Paul Chitakunye, Enrico Zagnoli, and Sam Bardsley.

England Community Lions defeat France in the Under 19’s European Championship

England defeat France in Under 19’s Championship

Emotions overflowed after England Community Lions staged a stirring fightback to beat France in the Final of the European Under-19s Championships in Italy on Saturday night,

Then dedicated their triumph to Gary McMahon, a member of the coaching staff whose death last weekend had stunned the squad and the wider Rugby League community.

Members of Gary’s family flew out to join the team on the day of the game – and his son, Gary junior, selected Harry Penny of Ince Rose Bridge as the man of the match after England’s 14-12 win.

They were also presented with Gary’s winner’s medal, and a France shirt by Luc Lacoste, the President of the French Federation.

The squad had resolved to play on in Gary’s memory after last weekend’s trauma, only to be rocked again when news reached Italy of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – which also raised questions about whether the game would go ahead.

But they saw that as an opportunity to pay tribute to Her Majesty, with a minute’s silence and singing of God Save the King before kick-off.

At the end of a tournament which has been memorable for other reasons, including the remarkable performances of a Ukraine team whose presence was significant enough, but who then defied expectations to reach the semi finals.

Marc Lovering, the RFL’s Director of Participation and Development, said: “Nobody could have envisaged what lay ahead for this group when we left England less than two weeks ago, and that explained the incredible emotion which followed Saturday’s Final.

“The tragic loss of Gary McMahon put the trip in context, but the way the squad have responded has been an inspirational example of the power of our sport.

At a very difficult time the players and staff were comforted by the knowledge that Gary’s family were being supported by RL Cares Benevolent Fund.

England defeat France in Under 19’s Championship

We were fortunate to have RL Cares Player Welfare Manager

We were fortunate to have RL Cares Player Welfare Manager Steve McCormack with us thoughout providing invaluable support”.

“How better to remember him than for the team to show such courage in winning a Final which was absorbing and also agonising.

And we must pay tribute here to France, both for their performances in the tournament and the grace they showed in offering condolences to Gary, led by their President Luc Lacoste.

“It was also a special moment when the team sang God Save the King before the start of the match – they have certainly represented the country with huge distinction over the last two weeks.

“But it’s also been a significant two weeks for the sport of Rugby League, best symbolised by the amazing achievements of Ukraine in assembling a squad, travelling to Italy and then reaching the semi finals.

It was wonderful to hear them cheering us on in the final, after we had built such strong relationships through the tournament – and they even joined us on the field to celebrate, in scenes I don’t think any of us will forget.

“Congratulations also to Wales for their third-placed finish, and to Italy for hosting the event.”

Three England players – Noah Lancelott of Leigh Miners Rangers, Scott Parnaby of Waterhead Warriors, and Keiran Welburn of West Hull – were named in the team of the tournament.

France led 8-0 at half-time through a try from Justin Tropis and two goals from Thomas Monclus, but the Lions replied when good work from Millom’s Jack Newbegin and Ryan Wood of Wigan St Judes sent Lancelott over in the left corner.

Welburn goaled superbly from the touchline to close the deficit to two points and with Newbegin kicking well, the Lions played in the right areas and chased everything.

With 64 minutes gone, the Lions claimed a second try, again well finished by Lancelot and were on top four minutes later when good link up from the middle of the field gave Siddal’s Harvey Oldroyd the space he needed to finish.

That score set England up at 14-8, but France ensured a nervy end when captain Arthur Salles pushed through for a try that Monclus couldn’t goal after 76 minutes.

The Lions regained ascendancy and looked far more likely to increase their lead in the closing stages with their desire and togetherness winning the day for a remarkable win.

Well done Harry Penny of Ince Rose Bridge, our Lions’ Man of the Match for the European Championship Final. On a day of outstanding performances from every single player, Harry was picked by Gary McMahon’s family as our player of the match for the Final. Here he is receiving his award from U19s Lions Head Coach Allan Coleman. Congratulations Harry.

England secure dramatic win in European rugby league u19s championship

England pulled off a dramatic victory, defeating holders France 14-12 in the European U19s Championship at the Pasian di Prato Stadium in Udine, Italy, coming back from being 8-0 down at the break.

The win was immediately dedicated to assistant coach Gary McMahon, who tragically passed away when with the squad last weekend.

Winger Noah Lancellot claimed two tries as part of the fightback, England head coach Allan Coleman, who stands down now, understandably emotional and full of praise for his charges.

“I’m so proud of everybody, players, staff – all who has been part of what we wanted to achieve,” he said.

“Our message at half time was let’s leave everything out there, give it all we’ve got, no regrets and I’m lost for words;

Gary was behind everything we did. A number of these players will go on and sign professional from this, I have no doubt of that.”

In a fiery encounter as the light faded, Justin Tropis opened the scoring for the French with a fine long range effort.

Thomas Monclus missing the conversion but adding two penalties before the break, both sides having a player sinbinned in the opening forty for late challenges.

England had two tries disallowed, winger Andy Djeukam couldn’t beat the touchline in the first half and his replacement Harvey Oldroyd was also ruled out in the second.

Lancelott did find space on the opposite wing for his double just after the hour, one a spectacular dive into the corner.

England’s improved defensive effort, enthusiasm in contact and territorial advantage throughout the second half unsettled the French and Oldroyd finished another superb left to right move in the corner to move them ahead.

French centre Arthur Salles went over five minutes from time, but Monclus missed the conversion that could have taken it to golden point.

In the preceding Plate Final to decide third place in the tournament, Wales defeated Ukraine 32-7.

There was little between the sides in the opening 25 minutes, props Michael Carter and Bradley Williams running hard for Wales and Ukraine responding in kind through Maksym Harmash and Bohdan Stetsun.

Dafydd Orr Morgan delayed a restart after Oleksandr Formiuk defused the bomb in the in-goal area that saw Wales reduced to 12 players with a sin binning, Oleksandr Levandovskyi slotting over a now trademark drop goal to move Ukraine ahead.

Unconverted tries late in the half from Bradley Toy, burrowing over from dummy-half, and Oscar Fisher in the corner saw Wales lead 8-1 at the break. Heavy rain and a strong wind accompanied the second period.

Fisher with his second and Mason Phillips extending the advantage by the 50th minute.

Ukraine showed the spirit that has made them so popular throughout the tournament, building pressure to give the opportunity for Harmesh spring out of dummy-half to add some respectability to the score line, Oleksandr Forniuk adding a difficult conversion.

Back rower Rhys Davies claimed a brace for the Welsh to confirm the win, head coach Wayne Ponting commenting: “Ukraine gave us a massive fright, fair play to them they upset out game plan.

Once we got back into it, we found our feet. We finished third in Serbia in 2018 so, with a new group of boys, this is another massive step in the right direction.”

Ireland win European rugby league u19s shield

Ireland win European rugby league u19s shield

Ireland remained unbeaten following two rounds of forty minute matches against hosts Italy and Serbia to win the U19s Championship Plate, at the Pasian di Prato Stadium in Udine.

The games for sides finishing fifth to seventh in the qualifying competition took place last Tuesday and today (Saturday), and Ireland coach Bernard Westerman saw his side concede only one try in four games.

Twice beating the Italians 30-0 and Serbia 22-6 and 42-0 to round off the Plate competition.

“I’m very proud of my guys, we stuck together and regrouped after missing out on the main tournament semi finals, they showed great character on and off the pitch to overcome that disappointment,” said Westerman.

“It is a testament to the guys to return home with that shield. We are looking at player development and we found some hidden gems out there in a fantastic tournament.”

In the first round of games, Ireland fullback Nathan Connell was outstanding, crossing for four tries – including a hat trick against the Serbs – and kicking eight goals in total.

With spoils shared between Italy and Serbia following young Azzuri Christopher-Kyle De Meyer’s touchline conversion which denied Serbia what would have been their first victory in the tournament.

In Round two, Ireland overcame a dogged Italian side with captain James Downes leading the charge and Louix Gorman instrumental in steering play. Italy’s wingmen Davide Saita and Fabia Dianti both showed great pace but a wall of green prevented them from capitalising on their downfield breaks.

Serbia finally did earn their inaugural win, beating Italy 12-4 in a bruising encounter.

Saita was again impressive although a foot in touch denied him an early try but he was successful later as he took Filippo Bertossi’s looping pass to score in the corner.

But Serbia’s robust defence and ability to capitalise on Italy’s errors proved the difference with Dragan Kokanovic and Vlado Jankovic crossing.

With the Shield already in the bag, Westerman rotated his team for their final encounter with Serbia.

Gorman’s hat trick capped an impressive tournament for the Hull KR Academy product whilst Connell ended another fine performance with a brace of tries and seven more goals.

ENGLAND 56-8. An outstanding performance from our U19s Lions.

England dedicated their win to assistant coach Gary McMahon, who tragically passed away at the team base on Sunday morning.

Keiran Welburn finished with 24 points from a try and ten perfect goals, Leeds Rhinos academy player Mekhi Bridgeman-Reany with a brace of tries after the hour.

Mason Phillips levelled for Wales early on but they trailed 20-8 at the break, and the Community Lions dominated the late exchanges.

Their head coach Allan Coleman commented: “The lads were emotional and paid the perfect tribute to Gary, they’ve been brilliant today.

It’s just fitting that they scored 56 points and that was his age. The second half we were excellent, completed our sets and it really worked for us.”

Match report

Holders France will take on England on Saturday in the final of the European U19s Championship, after both were comprehensive winners in their semis. Eric Anselme’s young Tricolors beat surprise package Ukraine 62-7 whilst England triumphed 56-8 against Wales, in the heat at the Pasian di Prato Stadium in Udine, Italy.

Matthieu Garrigues, winger Kylian Benavent, Thibault Marty and Louis Grossemy from the bench all scored try doubles for the French who got off to a blistering start with six touchdowns in the opening 26 minutes. “We knew it was going to be tough and we had to impose ourselves from the start,” said Anselme. “If we began well and worked hard, we felt that we would have the advantage. We managed to keep our concentration and did a good job.”

Davyd Zazimko showed supreme pace, scorching 90 metres to score between the posts to open Ukraine’s account on the stroke of half time and was denied another long range effort in the second, Vitalii Romanov’s drop goal delighting the crowd on the hour mark.
