A club which has consistently produced star talents such as Carl Webb, Brodie Croft and Beau Fermor has turned its attention to outside of the rugby league scene.

The Dalby Devils have again shown the power of a community’s willingness to give back, raising over $10,000 during their annual under 17 charity round held on Saturday.

This year, the funds will support the McGrath Foundation’s cancer care nursing services in Dalby, with the initiative proudly led by the club’s under 17 boys and girls sides.

Each year, the clubs under 17s select a cause close to their hearts, driving fundraising efforts.

It’s a long-standing tradition that reinforces gratitude to the Dalby community and teaches players about the dedication behind the scenes from club volunteers and committee members.

Players hit their goal through jersey sponsorships, bake stalls, and first try scorer sweeps across both matches.

The day was boosted by the support of visiting teams Southern Suburbs and Valleys, who also embraced the cause.

The Devils have a strong track record of raising funds for important causes, previously backing the Carl Webb Foundation and RUOK.

That ongoing connection with RUOK has led to a long-term partnership embedded in the club’s mental health and wellbeing culture.

The total amount raised across recent years is now approaching the $100,000 mark, reflecting the club’s enduring commitment to community impact beyond the scoreboard.

Players enjoy post-season friendly

A connection made over the past couple of years between Sydney’s De La Salle Rugby League club and the Clontarf Academy on the NSW mid-north coast resulted in a ‘friendly’ being played in Taree last weekend.

No-one kept track of the scores because that wasn’t the priority.

“The De La Salle Under 16s trip at the end of the season has been happening for 30 years,” coach Alan Wilson told nswrl.com.au.

“It’s been more about fun and friendship more than anything and less about winning or trophies.

“Two years ago, I wanted to do something different to broaden the horizons of our players, rather than just go to a fun park or water slide.

“I introduced the club to the Clontarf Academy, and we’ve been doing some fundraising for them to help with gear and equipment.”

The Clontarf Academy began in Western Australia for Indigenous high school-age boys wanting to play Aussie Rules. It has been in NSW with a Rugby League focus since 2012.

De La Salle is one of Sydney’s oldest and best-known junior clubs, producing True Blues Andrew Ettingshausen and Adam MacDougall.

“So, we got a game up there in Taree this year,” Wilson said.

“It let the players and their parents experience what life is life for others in the Rugby League community, who might not have things as good as we do.”

The club went to Coonamble and Coonabarabran, west of Tamworth, last year.

“They came back from that trip with their eyes more open to what other people are going through.”

This year the Clontarf Academy team enjoyed a comfortable win – four tries to fullback Tashiem Abbott, although Wilson didn’t keep a scoresheet going.

“The Clontarf boys came out on top,” he said.

“It was a good game – Tashiem didn’t need the yellow helmet to stand out. His speed, agility and catching skills let everyone know he was ‘in the house’.”

His twin brother Tyler wasn’t available to play.

The pair earned a reputation for resilience when, aged 12, they joined their uncle Barry Watts on a fund-raising 600km camel trek from Alice Springs to Taree for a chance to attend high school and play Rugby League with the Clontarf Academy.

They were part of a three-day camp at NSWRL’s Centre of Excellence last November held for Indigenous players state-wide for the KARI Foundation Talented Aboriginal Athletes Program (TAAP).

“It is truly amazing that sport has the power to change lives and these two happy smiling boys are a testament to that,” Wilson said.

“We were so grateful to have been part of a great Rugby League experience last weekend and it was highlighted when we gave away our De La Salle jerseys to all the Clontarf boys. The Clontarf team then presented us with a signed jersey.”

Monaro talent shines in Southern Gala Day

A celebration of NSWRL Blues Tag was held in Boorowa on Sunday as Monaro, Western, Riverina, and Illawarra-South Coast came together for the Southern Opens Representative Gala Day.

Following some thrilling results on a stunning spring day, the best was saved for last, as the unbeaten Western Rams took on the Monaro Colts for the trophy and bragging rights.

Monaro had an up-and-down road to their Round Three winner-take-all fixture against Western, earning a convincing 32-6 win over Riverina before managing a last-gasp 10-10 draw with Illawarra-South Coast.

Still, the Colts lifted another gear in the final game with Caitlin Turnbull crossing for a first-half double and Emma James converting both tries to take her side ahead 12-0 at the break.

Keesha Kapea took Monaro further ahead (18-0) after halftime, with the talented fullback scoring her third try of the day. But the Rams hit back through Saxbi Shaw scoring to trail 18-6 with five minutes left.

Putting the result beyond doubt, Monaro playmaker Alicia Trevathan streaked clear down the left touchline. Kapea converted to put the exclamation mark on a dominant 24-6 Colts victory.

Kapea was named ‘Player of the Day’, but she quickly deflected all the praise onto her Monaro teammates, who came out of the Canberra Region Rugby League and George Tooke Shield competitions.

“There was absolutely no weak link in our team, and everyone is just so strong across the park,” Kapea said.

“When we come up against each other in different competitions, it’s always good to watch, and it has helped build a really strong Monaro team, which we saw today.”

The Southern Gala Day, which was played on the same weekend as the Central cluster in Sydney on Saturday and the Northern cluster in Coffs Harbour on Sunday.

Showcased the best Blues Tag talent in the region and offered a vital pathway to representative honours for players.

“It’s huge to continue comps like these for League Tag, and especially to reward players after strong local competitions,” Kapea said.

“It’s a great pathway, especially if you want to play non-contact, and it’s always an excellent way to play some higher-level Rugby League before taking that next step up to contact if that’s what you want to do.”

On top of some great Blues Tag action, Boorowa Rovers Rugby league Football Club should be commended for hosting the event in a last-minute change of location.

Surge in QRL community participation as rugby league captivates Queensland

Footy fever is gripping Queensland as more and more junior and senior players sign on to play community rugby league across the state.

At the start of this month, Queensland Rugby League player registrations were up 14 per cent, equating to about 8000 more registered participants compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

Representatives from the QRL and National Rugby League were in Redcliffe today to celebrate the strong start to the club rugby league season.

While QRL general manager of community and competitions Glenn Ottaway and NRL executive general manager of elite football Graham Annesley provided a participation update to the media.

More than 50 excited junior players took part in a skills session on the Kayo Stadium field.

They were joined by Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons head coach Tahnee Norris and squad members Evania Pelite and Shannon Mato, as well as Dolphins NRL star Sean O’Sullivan.

Norris, Pelite and Mato spoke passionately about the growth of the female game and connection between community rugby league and the elite level.

The surge in Queensland registration numbers coincides with a strong start to QRL statewide competitions

The excitement generated by the emergence of The Dolphins in the NRL; and the blistering early form of the Brisbane Broncos.

There’s ample reasons to be optimistic about the imminent challenge awaiting Billy Slater’s Queensland Maroons team.

Future Maroons are currently enjoying their footy on rugby league fields all around the state, with 60,000 club participants having already signed on to play Queensland’s favourite sport.

Ottaway praised the efforts of staff and volunteers.

“The surge in early participation numbers is a reflection on the way the game is structured and delivered across Queensland,” Ottaway said.

“There is also greater confidence in the registration platform in that we have opened registrations on December 1 for the past three years.

There has been a consistent and aligned marketing approach between the QRL and NRL.

“What we have seen is a much higher peak in registrations through January than we’ve experienced before.

Rugby league is also one of the more affordable community sports.”

Given the promising early data approaching Easter, Ottaway expects this year’s final numbers to eclipse the 2022 figure of 64,566.

“Every age demographic is above where it was at the same time last year, including seniors (19 years and above),” Ottaway said.

Male participation (year to date) is up 13 per cent up, while female registrations continue to grow.

“I often think back to how much fun I had playing junior rugby league”.

“Even more importantly, it teaches kids real life skills that go way beyond the field to help them thrive in life,” O’Sullivan said.

The NSWRL has received a tremendous vote of confidence from participants for the 2023 season, with the number of players having already moved past 100,000 which represents an increase of more than 14 per cent on a year-to-date basis.

The figures are just as encouraging for both men’s and women’s participation rates, with men up by 12 per cent while women are on track for another record-breaking season with a 22 per cent increase from the corresponding time last year.

The NSWRL is now well on track to pass the previous record-breaking season of 2021 with the cut-off date for registrations not until June 30 and most Junior Rugby League competitions still yet to kick off.

“The fact we have already passed 100,000 participants for the 2023 season is a huge show of support for our great game,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

“The increase in participation for both the men’s and women’s games reflects the excitement in the community for Rugby League and it is shaping up to be a spectacular season.

“There is still plenty of time to sign up before registrations close and there are so many formats of the game available to try including traditional, League Tag, Try League, Wheelchair Rugby League and Physical Disability Rugby League.

“I thank everyone who gives up their time for our game every weekend, including the players, coaches, officials, volunteers and families, and wish them all the best for the season ahead.”

The NSWRL enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2021 (107,528) as community sport returned after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, while last year saw female participation break the 23,000 mark (23,203) for the first time in history.

Westpac NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler and Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder toured regional NSW in February as part of a massive recruitment drive for the 2023 season.

The two-week tour also involved True Blues Craig Wing, Boyd Cordner, Steve Menzies and Nathan Hindmarsh, and Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues captain Kezie Apps, and took in more than 5700km and 11 free football clinics at towns as far south as Albury; to Bourke in western NSW; and Lismore in northern NSW.

Other towns visited included Dubbo, Walgett, Glen Innes, Tamworth, Harden, Hay, Cooma and Moruya.
