Struddy’s Cup grand finals – three bumper deciders here

Studdy’s Cup grand final match day coverage, best players from a gala day of finals involving St Mary’s, Alex Hills, Caloundra SHS and Stretton State College.

St Mary’s College’s winning year 7 side.

Caloundra SHS, St Mary’s College and Stretton State College claimed premiership on a gala day of Struddy’s Cup schoolboy grand finals played at Bishop Park.

Alexandra Hills SHS were brave in losing two of the finals, pushing Caloundra to the last second in the Year 9 encounter.

The Struddy’s Cup is named after former Australian halfback and two-time Brisbane Rugby League premiership winning coach Ross Strudwick who has been a long-time supporter and sponsor of schoolboy rugby league.

Stretton State College claimed the Year 8 premiership

The players of the day were: Year 7: Darius Brive (Caloundra SHS), Kade Kraut (Caloundra SHS), Hunter Tate-Roche (St Mary’s), Safin Elara (St Mary’s);

Year 8: Lexin Hill (Stretton State College), Nathan Phelps (Alexandra Hills), Sire Drinnan (Alexandra Hills), Zac Lotaki ((Stretton), Onyx Poimafiti (Stretton);

Year 9: Ellyjah Birve (Caloundra SHS), Cooper Benvenuti (Alexandra Hills SHS), Jaxon Benvenuti (Caloundra SHS)

The Matches

Year 7 Caloundra SHS v St Mary’s College Toowoomba

St Mary’s College prop Safin Elara scored a crucial late try as the boys from the Darling Downs edged out Caloundra SHS 18-10 in a tremendous decider this afternoon.

After the scores were 10-all at halftime, St Mary’s produced second half tries to Elara and Nate Goulding after star centre Hunter Tate-Roche had set up the four-pointer.

St Mary’s College’s winning year 7 side

But it was a beautiful piece of play from prop Elara which enabled St Mary’s to raise their lead to 18-10, five minutes from the end.

After putting his edge forward Temanu Taahi into a gap, Elara then followed on the play to storm over from a ruck run.

It was a golden piece of play by the mobile prop to give St Mary’s a down payment in the premiership.

The St Mary’s captain Andrew Leach enjoys the moment

Earlier St Mary’s hit the front 16 minutes from fulltime when five-eight Cayleb O’Neil stayed alive with the ball, passing to danger man Hunter Tate-Roche who put his mobile edge forward Nate Goulding over in the corner. It was 14-10.

Caloundra almost struck back three minutes later, but defiant defence contributed to Cooper Bretherton unsuccessfully reaching out to score.

The teams were locked 10-all at halftime after a two-try half from St Mary’s centre Hunter Tate-Roche and Caloundra SHS five-eight Darius Birve.

Birve’s two tries were outstanding, powerful individual efforts while Tate-Roche was expertly feed possession by his halves, Cayleb O’Neil and Huey Geran.

St Mary’s claimed the Year 7 premiership

St Mary’s would have scored again late in the half, if not for an amazing effort on the goal line from Caloundra’s Kade Kraut, forcing the ball to be lost.

Respective props Oliver Harrison (Caloundra) and Safin Elara (St Mary’s) were strong in the middle, with Elara’s agility before the defensive line eye-catching.

Year 8 (Alexandra Hills SHS v Stretton State College)

Two late tries by Stretton State College elevated the side to a cherished premiership, 28-12 over Alexandra Hills SHS.

Classy centre Amon Tu’aefe and barrelling prop Aydon Barney did the damage late as Stretton pulled away from their rivals after the scores had been level at halftime.

Stretton State College fullback Hills was player of the year

A dummy half diving try from Dakoda Yung just after the break took Stretton State College to 16-12 after the team’s fullback Lexin Hill had again made inroads.

Two brave tackles in a row from Alex Hills’ Dayle Salut was not enough to prevent Yung from taking advantage of a retreating Alex Hill defence to score.

The score was 12-all at halftime, with a tremendous late try by Alex Hills halfback Nathan Phelps drawing his side level.

This was after Stretton State College fullback Lexin Hill had shone like a beacon as his team rebounded from an early Alexandra Hills SHS try to lead 12-6.

Stretton State College claimed the Year 8 premiership

Lexin scored one try and looked a class act before his edge forward Zac Lotaki sent his centre Amon Tu’aefe racing away to score a second try.

Alex Hills had started like a house on fire, with prop Reihana Kelly’s rampaging run a great effort in a grand final. Kai Thomas’ conversion then gave Alex Hills a 6-nil break.

Alexandra Hills State High School were brave in the decider

Stretton State College’s Onyx Poimafiti made a difference with his big runs and one huge tackle.

Hill was named Player of the Competition.

Year 9 (Alexandra Hills SHS v Caloundra SHS)

Calroundra SHS held on to beat a fast finishing Alexandra Hills SHS 24-22 in the match of the day.

Caloundra SHS looked home but an inspired performance from the Alex Hills forwards dragged their side back into the match.

Alex Hills prop Cooper Benvenuti, the Player of the Competition, was enormous, scoring a try and charging to give depth to an attacking movement which saw his winger Jail Fels cross with one minute remaining. But the kick from the sideline missed and Caloundra SHS held on.

Alexandra Hills SHS prop Cooper Benvenuti was named man of the competition

Two first half tries to Queensland schoolboys five-eighth Ellyjah Birve sent Caloundra SHS flying out of the blocks to lead 12-nil. And it proved the difference.

Birve ran in a beautiful early try, then forced his way over from close range with a show and go that sent his side hurtling to 12-nil.

But as halftime loomed Alexandra Hills, which had to be the next side to score, burrowed over after winger Jailan Fels crossed.

The winning Year 9 Caloundra SHS side

Then Alexandra Hills bookends, props Benvenuti and Jaxon Benvenuti breathed fire into their teams’ campaign after the break, storming their side into field position for edge forward Thomas Croker to slice over.

However, for the second time in the match, Alex Hills failed to secure possession after scoring and the resulting pressure saw Caloundra’s hooker Will Joyner break from the lock position in the scrum and score.

No.13 Keagan Zanchetta then backed it up with another try and at 24-12 with 12 minutes remaining, momentum was the Caloundra SHS.

But there was drama when Caloundra hooker Joyner was sent to the sin bin, leaving his side a player short for five minutes.

The Alex Hills Year 9s were beaten by a nose

Cooper Benvenuti’s rampaging run at the Caloundra line continued with a try next to the posts and with six minutes remaining, it was 24-18 to the Coast side.

THE PREVIEW

Here we present the Players to Watch and the Unsung Heroes from their respective teams.

Former NRL coach and English Super League coach Shaun McRae addresses the young Alex Hills side

Alexandra Hills SHS, year 8s

Players to watch

Nathan Phelps and Kai Thomas

The halfback pairing both players very influential over the past two years. With a contrasting style of play, they complement each other well.

Unsung – Ted Black and Cooper Allen

Black, a prop, and Allen, a second rower or centre, have both progressed very well over last two years strong running resilient defenders.

Cody Harris lines up a winning semi-final kick for Alexandra Hills SHS

Alexandra Hills SHS, year 9s

Alex Hills will rely on their middle unit players Cooper Benvenuti, Jaxon Peters- Falloon and Thomas Croker to lay a platform for the rest of the team to capitalise.

The side has been very well led by half back Cody Harris and backed up superbly by fullback Declan Keenan.

Stretton State College, Year 8s

Players to Watch.

Lexin Hill

The fullback and captain, Hill is the leading try scorer in the competition currently leads the Player of the Year points. He has great footwork and knowledge of the game and is the most competitive person you will meet.

Onyx Poimafiti

The prop is a hard worker on the field, the leader of the pack. He loves the challenge of big games.

Unsung

Connor Smith: A second rower in his second year og league, Smith is a great line runner, fast and great under the ball tackler.

Jai Hughes

A calm and creative half who steers the ship, Hughes is a smooth mover from a touch football player who always seems to take the right option in attack

Caloundra SHS, Year 7s

Players to watch

Oliver Smith

The young lock is his team’s forward leader who features strong running and defence. He sets a good example for the rest of the forwards.

Kade Kraut

The second rower is a tireless worker who made crucial game saving tackles in preliminary final.

Tao Chan

A hooker, Chan is a smaller forward but with a great tackle technique that keeps middle solid.

Kayan Davidson

The fullback is an exciting attacking player but also a great one-on-one defender.

Darius Birve

A five-eighth and captain, Birve features strong attacking and defensive play with leadership skills.

Caloundra SHS, Year 9s

Players to watch:

Ellyjah Birve

The Queensland 15s year state representative is an obvious selection for players to watch. He is well known and every team we come up against knows him and works hard to stop him.

Birve has brought the intensity from the national carnival back to the team and has a hand in almost every try Caloundra SHS score. He is also an outstanding goal kicker who is Melbourne Storm contracted.

Keagan Zanchetta

Zanchetta is the Caloundra captain, a gifted half back with the frame of a lock forward and plays both positions well.

He represented the Sunshine Coast 15yrs side at the state titles this year in the centres. The youngster is a “follow me’’ kind of leader.

Caloundra SHS

Unsung Hero:

Xavier O’Brien

O’Brien is the kind of player every coach wants in his team. O’Brien does not have an off switch and could play every minute in the middle.

He is determined and pokes his nose through on almost every carry to get us on the front foot.

Has the ability to stop attackers in the place defensively and deserves a lot of credit for allowing our spine to strike on the back of his momentum.

Keagan Zanchetta as a junior

Will Joyner

Joyner is a great defender for Caloundra SHS with a smart footy mind and a pass as accurate in the first minute and last minute.

Joyner has only been off the field for a total of 15 minutes all season and leads the team in his actions.

Without him putting the ball on a platter for our halves, Caloundra SHS wouldn’t be in the position they are.

Joyner has a habit of finding the try line this year and can transition between hooker and lock.

Caloundra SHS’s Ellyjah Birve scores for Queensland. Picture, John Gass

Caloundra SHS coaches Murray Finch (Year 9) and Andrew Gercken (Year 7) said they were both “extremely proud of the teams that have made it through to the grand final after the school’s year 8s and 10s played tier 1 Broncos competitions, while the opens fell just short of a final in the Gee Shield.

“We are the only school on the Sunshine Coast who have featured in the top tier competitions,’’ they said.

The St Mary’s College Year 7 side were in the Struddy’s Cup grand final

St Mary’s College, Year 7s

Hunter Tate-Roache and Temanu Taahi

Tate-Roache, a centre, and edge forward Taahi were both damaging ball runners. Every time they carry the ball they make an immediate impact and they show up in defence too.

St Mary’s College were in the Struddy’s Year 7 grand final.

Andrew Leach

Leach is a no nonsense type of player who cuts the legs of the opposition. He is the St Mary’s captain who leads by example

Cayleb O’Neil

A five-eight with deft ballplayer, he also doesn’t shy away from a contest. He is a player with heaps of confidence.

Safin Elara

The young prop loves hard work and often breaks the line with his tough carriers.

Unsung

Noah Davies

The St Mary’s prop has strong carries and never gets pushed back. He gives the backs all the room that they could wish for.

Oliver Nichol

One of St Mary’s impact bench players, he gives the team energy and an immediate lift when he comes on. Nichol has strong in defence and does the one per cent things well.

Langer Trophy finals countdown: Just three days from the semi-finals – all to be livestreamed by News Corp – the best new faces of 2021

Three, two, one … it is just three days to Langer Trophy finals takeoff, with Marsden SHS, Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Keebra Park SHS and Ipswich SHS set for action at Langlands Park on Wednesday.

News Corp will be there to livestream the action via www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and News affiliates.

It has been a bumper season featuring an exciting array of new faces.

Some, like Palm Beach Currumbn SHS fullback Keano Kini and Keebra Park SHS winger Keebra Park Elijah Lui are game-breakers, while others, like Wavell’s Drew Timms and Coombabah SHS’s Jay Blazek, are unsung heroes.

Today we feature the competition’s best New Faces of 2021.

COOMBABAH SHS

JAY BLAZEK

Every team needs a Jay Blazek. The Coombabah SHS middle forward worker started the season as just another face in the off-season training squad, but he blossomed the more the competition unfolded.

Indeed the rookie who nominates Roosters pair Clive Radley and James Tedesco as his role models improved to such a degree, he played first grade with his junior club the Helensvale Hornets.

Coombabah SHS rugby league player Jay Blazek. Picture: NIGEL HALLETT

“I didn’t think I would reach A-grade level this quick. The game against men is much more aggressive and fast,’’ he said.

Blazek said Coombabah’s return to the Langer Trophy highlighted to fellow students they did not have to leave their community to play in the elite schoolboy competition.

“I had my mates and the same coaches around me and it also helped the team as we had such a good culture at Coombabah,’’ Blazek said.

HARRISON SCHWENKE (St Mary’s College)

St Mary’s College coach Matt Jahnke rates Harrison Schwenke as the best newcomer to the team in 2021.

The Warwick-born, Texas-raised forward has stepped up to the mark for St Mary’s, despite being just 16 years old.

Harry Schwenke playing for St Mary’s. Picture: Nev Madsen.

He scored a barnstorming try against Mabel Park, and Jahnke praised the attitude Schwenke has brought to the team.

“He brings an enthusiasm and willingness to learn,” Jahnke said.

“Harrison is keen to engage in the process and he works hard.

He’s still a lean front rower, but he’s working hard to improve his gym work and all that.

“He’s not afraid to take blokes on defensively and reminds me a bit of Thomas Flegler.

He’s very versatile.”

ELIJAH LUI (Keebra Park SHS)

Speed demon Lui entered the season on the front foot having helped Tweed Seagulls win the Meninga Cup state wide competition in May.

A capable fullback, he has found a home on the wing in the top flight competition where his pace gives Keebra Park SHS enormous threat from any position on the field.

Lui has had to work for his place, having earned his stripes coming through the Titans Cup premiership winning side of 2020 before earning promotion in the Langer Trophy for 2021.

KEANO KINI (Palm Beach Currumbin)

Kini gets another mention this season after making the Surprise Packets of 2021 story earlier in the month.

A year 11 student signed by the Gold Coast Titans, he is a schoolboy prodigy who has shone in the New Zealand system before moving to PBC SHS to complete the final two years of his schooling.

His strong carries and footwork makes him a handful, both entering the attack from the back or hunting around his halves in the middle of the ruck.

But he can also ball play, which adds to his arsenal.

Kini has been a great discovery and a shrewd addition to the high profile PBC SHS program.

He is also a winner, having helped Tweed Seagulls to the Meninga Cup state final.

XAVIER STOWERS (Marsden SHS)

The 196cm tall, 114kg Stowers is big and strong and he has used that asset to the best of his ability in his Langer Trophy debut season.

From a rugby union background, Stowers learned his craft while at the Ipswich Jets in 2020 but his game has gone to another level this season.

Xavier Stowers and Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene were the best New Faces at Marsden State High School. (News Corp/Attila Csaszar)

A big bloke who craves the physical confrontation, Stowers was given a simple message at Marsden – run hard and play the ball quickly.

He would not be a dummy runner, he would be a primary runner and he has filled that role to perfection.

Indeed he twice scored close to the line tries from seemingly impossible positions – including against the heralded PBC SHS defensive line.

Signed by the Gold Coast Titans, Stowers has fresh legs for the code and his development over the next three years will be fascinating to monitor.

RENE BAGON (Ipswich SHS)

Ipswich State High School head coach Josh Bretherton said Bagon had impressed stepping up as a prop in the Langer Trophy competition this season.

“He has been new and he is young and he has played excellent football,’’ Bretherton said.

“He has been one of our better forwards consistently across the whole season.

“He has competed very well and he’s new to this level.’’

Bagon, who has just turned 16, has been one of Ipswich State High’s most determined performers.

“He gives us a bit of physicality and grit,’’ the coach said.

“He just wants to get in and do the dirty work and throw his body around and be physical … and the guys get energy from that.’’

Bagon was initially seen by Manly as a Walters Cup player at Forest Lake SHS.

Ipswich State High School rugby league player Rene Bagon has been a leading performer in the 2021 Langer Trophy competition.

BEN TE KURA (Wavell SHS)

Tall and lean, Te Kura is one of the elite young players of the Langer Trophy.

A left edge backrower, the Brisbane Broncos signed forward had a disrupted pre-season and late start to the competition after recovering from injury.

BEN TE KURA (Wavell SHS).

But he impressed in every outing, including scoring two tries to rally his side from an 18-nil deficit against Keebra Park.

A Norths’ Devils Meninga Cup player, Te Kura was named in the Queensland schoolboys 16-18 years team merit side after helping the Wavell-laden Metro North to the state championship earlier in the year.

DREW TIMMS (Wavell SHS)

Timms was the glue of the Wavell SHS pack.

He is a no-frills middle forward who tackles and works, then tackles and works some more.

Timms is the type of player every successful side needs.

A 2019 Queensland under 15 teammate of Langer teammates Junior Taungatua and Tahrell Feaveai, Timms was also one of the Redcliffe Dolphins’ best players in a frustrating Meninga Cup campaign earlier in the year.

ARAMA HAU (Keebra Park SHS)

Arama Hau has been a tremendous asset to Keebra Park SHS, with his powerful running and deceptive footwork at the defensive line.

A South Coast representative, he is a Coombabah SHS junior who shone in age group competitions before switching to Keebra Park where he chased his dream of playing in the Langer Trophy – understandably not knowing Coombabah would be promoted to Langer status in 2021.

He is capable of scoring close to the line tries if opposition forwards do not get well balanced and commit aggressively in defence, and it is little wonder the Gold Coast Titans have identified him.

CALEB GOULD-WAIARIKI (Coombabah SHS)

CALEB GOULD-WAIARIKI (Coombabah SHS)

Gould-Waiariki rose to the occasion for Coombabah SHS when they lost their leader and No.1 player, Tim Sielaff-Burns, early in the season.

A Gold Coast Titans contracted halve, Gould-Waiariki led his team superbly while never letting his own standards slide.

A gun touch football player, Gould-Waiariki is a Burleigh Bears junior who scored the match winning try when the Bears upset state champions Tweed Seagulls in the Meninga Cup competition.

TANU NONA (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS)

Nona has been a class act for Palm Beach Currumbin, initially starting the season at dummy half when the injured Oskar Bryant was unavailable, and then as a back-up halve.

Indeed the most celebrated combination in the Langer Trophy competition is the Bryant-Tom Weaver, hooker-halfback pairing, but PBC SHS never lost a beat with Nona starting in place of the unavailable Bryant.

He served his apprentice in Walters Cup last season where, playing No.9, he was a driving force in PBC’s success, and has now doubt been inspired by the professional, winning culture within the Langer Trophy group.

Palm Beach Currumbin’s Tanu Nona in the 2020 Walters Cup where he was a star. (Image/Josh Woning)

Alex Leapai of Mabel Park State High School. (News Corp/Attila Csaszar)

ALEX LEAPAI (Mabel Park SHS)

Mabel Park SHS were the babies of the Langer Trophy and within thet nursery Mabel Park had the best 15-year-old in the competition.

Prop Alex Leapai junior played with maturity beyond his years in a team which played its heart out, without victory.

Tall and imposing, Leapai led the way in the middle of the ruck and it is little wonder the Sydney Roosters have signed him.

Leapai has an iron-willed work ethic.

He grew up watching his boxing father train in a home gym, and will never forget the off-seasons when his uncle, Queensland great Josh Papalii, would train with his dad as he tried to get an edge over fellow Raiders’ squad members.

Leapai junior loves his boxing but wants to play in the NRL – both for himself and for his dad.

JARDYN STILINOVICH-WATENE (Marsden SHS)

Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene has been slightly underrated for his contribution, but not by his teammates.

Indeed some of his best work is never seen by spectators and our online subscribers.

“He likes to talk and having him as my half, he directs you where to go wherever you are on the field,’’ said Marsden SHS backrower Jieye Mauai.

The cousin of NRL star Dallin, Stilinovich-Watene came to Logan to live after playing reserves with Keebra Park SHS.

But he has been a quiet achiever and never lost his way despite losing his dominant halfback, Cassius Cowley, for a long period.

Who have been the surprise packet players of this season’s Langer Trophy, the elite schoolboy rugby league competition?

We knew entering 2021 the likes of Blake Mozer (Keebra Park SHS), Tom Weaver (PBC SHS), Chris Faagutu (Marsden SHS) and Tahrell Feaveai (Wavell) would shine.

But what about the surprise packets, those who entered the season not as a headline act, but rather as under studies.

Filisi Frost (Coombabah SHS)

Filisi Frost (Wing) – wasn’t a certain starter going into the season but he has scored his fair share of tries this season and has saved just as many with some great defensive reads. He is an example of someone who has worked really hard in training and has been rewarded for it.

Ranil Shankar gets the ball away for Mabel Park SHS against St Mary’s College Picture: Nev Madsen.

Ranil Shankar (Mabel Park SHS)

Ranil Shankar has been a sparkling diamond for Mabel Park SHS in its Langer Trophy debut season.

A little hooker, he has played every minute and is a pocket dynamo.

Because of his size, opposition players have targeted him all season. “But there is no recollection of him missing any tackles,’’ said his coach Lee Addison.

Keano Kini (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS)

While his performances have been no surprise to his coach or team mates, other schools now have him on their tip sheet.

A year 11 student, he has been a major part of the Langer Trophy success this season.

He has speed when returning the ball, strong carries and footwork that have made him very hard to stop one on one.

PBC SHS’s Keano Kini playing for Tweed Seagulls. Picture: Scott Powick Newscorp

A Gold Coast Titans contracted player, he moved from New Zealand in January where he starred in NZ Rugby League competitions, including being named Player of the Tournament at the Schools under 15 National Carnival in 2019.

He also played for the New Zealand under 16s Team against Samoa as a 15-year-old.

Kini was a member of the successful 2021 Tweed Seagulls Mal Meninga Cup squad that won the State Final in May, although injury cut his season short after three rounds.

PJ Potasi (Keebra Park SHS)

PJ Potasi has added a threatening dimension to Keebra Park SHS’ potent attack with ball playing skills that most middles do not have.

He has worked hard on his fitness and, with more miles in his legs, he has got better the longer the season has progressed.

A year 11 student, Potasi now has the challenge of finishing the season strongly and should be a forward leader in 2022.

Jarvis Yeatman (Ipswich SHS)

Yeatman started the season off the bench but it is no coincidence Ipswich’s second half of the season surge has coincided with him winning a starting position at lock. He is a work horse every side needs, and tidies up a lot of tackles around the middle as well as bringing energy to the people around him.

Interestingly Ipswich SHS’s worst performances of the season – the second half fade out against PBC SHS, and Marsden and Keebra Park – were when he was injured.

A Gold Coast TItans contracted forward, he has stepped up to play every game in the opens at second row, front row and even in the halves where has covered for the injured Cassius Cowley. He is super skilful, tough and covers multiple positions.

His teammate Will Semu, although renowned for his ability on the field, has also impressed with his leadership qualities off the field despite being a year 10 student.

Bristowe Murray (Wavell SHS)

Murray is a grade 11 student who has forced his way into the Langer Trophy side. A good team man and popular with his team mates, he plays the utility of the bench and has scored a couple of important tries, while having impact off the bench. He can play every position, although No.9 and No.13 has suited him best.

We reveal brothers, relatives of past schoolboy guns playing Langer Trophy today

(left to right) Jayden Smith, Michael Roberts and Sione Fotuaika.

Did you know Dallin Watene-Zeleniak’s cousin, the nephew of Chris Sandow and the brothers of Brandon Smith and James Roberts were involved in the Langer Trophy this season?

It is a case of family ties at Marsden SHS, Wavell SHS, St Mary’s College and Mabel Park SHS with historic family links to past eras.

You don’t have to go too far back to remember when Dallin Watene-Zeleniak, the cousin of Marsden SHS five-eight Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene, was carving up teams in the NSW schoolboy competition.

Jayden Smith of Wavell SHS. Pic Peter Wallis

Everyone remembers Alex Leapai as an elite heavyweight boxer, but of course he was once a schoolboy star at Woodridge SHS who was signed to a scholarship by the North Queensland Cowboys.

Now his son Alex junior is a leading light for Mabel Park SHS.

Brandon Smith’s brother Jayden comes off the interchange bench for Wavell SHS.

Like his brother, he is a team player who lifts morale around the training paddock and on game day.

And Prinston Esera’s brother Caleb is in the Canberra Raiders system where Prinston is also contracted.

Marsden SHS forward Sione Fotuaika, the brother of Queensland State of Origin workhorse Moeaki, is a Gold Coast Titans signed forward who is really working his way into the season.

Another Marsden SHS student with past connections is Dom Sandow, whose uncle is Chris Sandow was a schoolboy sensation and fine NRL and English Super League player.

Also seen in the Marsden SHS extended squad for the first time is goalkicking halfback Cody Hamilton, the brother of Intrust Super Cup gun Guy.

Up on the Darling Downs, St Mary’s College has Luke Cessari in its ranks, the brother of Brisbane Broncos contracted centre Blake, while De La Salle Va’a is the younger brother of St Mary’s prop Xavier, who is very highly regarded by all and sundry.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS winger Michael Roberts is fast – and little wonder.

He is the brother of explosive Wests Tigers centre and former Blues player James Roberts.

And of course gun hooker Oskar Bryant has explosive Queensland Bulls cricket opener Max as an older sibling.

In action tomorrow, Ipswich, coming off a rousing second successive win, will look to retain momentum against St Mary’s College.

A little like Keebra Park SHS who have been sparked by the return of injured players, the improving Coombabah SHS have also started to play to their potential.

Providing he passes a fitness test, Coombabah’s clash with Marsden will be Quezon Eteru’s first game back since before the holidays.

Wavell SHS have a big task when they host Keebra Park SHS, last start winners of Palm Beach Currumbin.

PBC SHS will be on the rebound against Mabel Park SHS at Slacks Creek.

Giant Marsden SHS prop Xavier Stowers adds to Langer Trophy campaign

Subscribe here to watch today’s Langer Trophy round 4 games, including today’s blockbuster between Marsden SHS and PBC SHS featuring a 196cm giant.

The towering dram of Xavier Stowers alongside his five-eight, Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene(News Corp/Attila Csaszar)

It is just as well the sun would have set by the time Marsden SHS prop Xavier Stowers runs onto the field in today’s Langer Trophy livestream blockbuster with Palm Beach Currumbin SHS.

Otherwise the big bloke’s imposing frame might have cast a long shadow across the ground.

At 196cm tall and 115kg in weight, Stowers is from the Land of the Giants and one of the competition’s big-boppers.

A former Ipswich Grammar School First XV rugby No.8, Stowers is a first season Langer Trophy player having only started in rugby league last season playing for the Ipswich Jets juniors.

He has been a quick learner, having taken to the hurly burly of Langer Trophy front row play like a duck to water. Indeed the Gold Coast Titans have swooped to secure him on potential.

Xavier Stowers, left, with team mate Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene (News Corp/Attila Csaszar)

“League is more physical (than union) and being a front rower, I love the contact which comes with league,’’ Stowers said.

Stowers’ five-eight in the Marsden SHS team, the slightly built Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene, said having a big, mobile front rower like Stowers helped enormously.

“Having players like him to get us on the front foot, it makes it so much easier to play off the front foot rather than off the back foot,’’ Stilinovich-Watene said. “It does so much for us.’’

Stowers said he was glad to have switched to Marsden SHS because “the culture is great here’’.

“The boys made it easy for me. Coming from Ipswich I thought it would take time for me to settle in but the boys were great, they took me in straight away. That is why I found the transition so easy.’’

Meanwhile, the Marsden SHS community was celebrating the recent selection of four players in the Queensland under 12 team.

Xavier Stowers, left, and Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene (News Corp/Attila Csaszar)

They are Jeremiah Toko, Marlee Smith, Chris Vaimili-Toalepai and Marquis Sando.

They joined Mako teammates Kyedon Ashley, Ezra Button and Kingzen Lefono in the Met East team which won the under 12 state title, beating Sunshine Coast.

The Courier-Mail, Gold Coast Bulletin and News Corp Australia affiliates are live-streaming the Langer Trophy, Walters Cup and Langer Reserves games.

That is at least 10-12 games each round – plus access to the Payne Cup while unlocking access to the best News’ sites across Australia.

Weaver Not The Only Halfback Star

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS champion No.7 Tom Weaver may have got his team over the line, but there was another little general who impressed in the fixture won late by PBC over Coombabah SHS 22-18.

Coombabah SHS’s Caleb Gould-Waiariki playing for Burleigh Bears. Picture Scott Powick Newscorp

Take a bow Coombabah SHS halfback Calebl Gould-Waiariki who pulled his side together and took them to the brink of victory. Gould-Waiariki helped his team lead 6-4 at halftime and then 18-10 with 10 minutes to go before Weaver’s try assist and solo try ripped the game away from Coombabah.

“He really stepped up,’’ said Coombabah SHS coach Sam Meskell in reference to Gould-Waiariki.

“He showed determination, he took control and showed great leadership. That influenced some of the other boys to step up as well.’’

Meskell said despite missing the upset of the season, it was a good test to show “where we really are’’ after a heavy loss to Wavell SHS in round 2, albeit with a depleted side. “To push PBC to such a close game and still have improvement left in us is a good thing.’’

Wavell Shs Are The Real Deal

Despite defeat, Wavell SHS proved they are the real deal against Marsden SHS. They must be, because Marsden SHS are the real deal in 2021 and Wavell went within a whisker of snatching a draw.

And there is so much improvement in them. There was too much drop ball, although conditions were very slippery.

Indeed if you’d had a bucket sitting on the sideline for the duration of the match, there would have been a centimetre or two of moisture settle. That, and the heavy contact in tackles, made ball handling difficult.

But Wavell has got what it takes. Ben Tu kuru is a welcomed addition from injury and dummy half Tyrell Waaka-Rhind, halves Jaylan Afamasaga and Karl Oloapu are super effective playing off the front foot.

Tuesday’s match could easily be a dress rehearsal for semi-finals ahead.

Another Ode To Mozer – And His Rookie Mate

Another round goes by, and another influential performance from gun hooker Blake Mozer whose control of the game is second to none. This time he stepped up to direct his team to a 24-6 win over Ipswich SHS who had closed the gap to 10-6 early in the second half.

Mabel SHS Making Progress

It was a case of close, but no cigar for Mabel Park SHS who wrestled tenaciously with St Mary’s for the duration of the game – only to go down 12-8. It was a big effort by the competition newcomers.

Shilo Asifo, Mabel Park. Picture: Nev Madsen.

A trip up the range where primed opposition lay in wait, and a big penalty count against the home side does require a backs-to-the-wall effort to compete.

And compete they did. “My players were fantastic,’’ said coach Lee Addison. “All they did was defend for big chunks. It was two tries each and we have improved again.’’

There was frustration at some of the possession waved St Mary’s way, and one decision in particular to reverse a penalty given to St Mary’s because a knock-on had been detected prior to the infringement caused angst.

“It is so hard to win in those circumstances,’’ Addison said.

But the Langer Trophy is a school of hard knocks, and Mabel Park is taking the hard knocks and getting on with doing their jersey and community proud. “I am so happy with my boys.’’

Broncos Boy Nathaniel Shines For Marsden

He has been with the Brisbane Broncos since aged 15, and on Tuesday night Marsden SHS’s Nathaniel Tangimatatiti showed his community a glimpse of the best of him in a man of the match effort during Marsden’s win to maintain an unbeaten start to the season. Marsden held on to beat a fast finishing Wavell 18-12, a match they would not have won with their young side in 2020.

Marsden SHS players Braden Teuila, Teapo Stoltman, Kienan Tempest & Hamuera Kingi after Tuesday’s win.

Tangimatatiti, a left centre or left edge backrower, is now three games into his career at Marsden SHS after moving from New Zealand last year. Family ties to Marsden SHS meant the young Kiwi was never going to go to any other school if he moved to Queensland.

Marsden SHS second rower Eli Tuli

He is a great addition to the side after getting miles into his legs playing centre for Jesse Maclean’s Meninga Cup under 18 side earlier in the year. I’ll tell you how well he is going – he keeping Eli Tuli out of the side and that is saying something.

Saints Show Some Steal

No Xavier Va’a again – no problem as St Mary’s College claimed a second home win over Mabel Park SHS. Well, there were some problems if we are honest because new chums Mabel Park were no push overs.

But Va’a, a three season veteran in the Langer Trophy, is St Mary’s front row battleship and forward leader and any side would miss him. Darcy Carswell, Luke Cesari and Zac Brown were also missing, so St Mary’s squad has been tested and wins over Wavell SHS and Mabel SHS show they have passed the test ahead of the break for exams and holidays.
