Young Sharks to trial against Souths

The next generation of Sharks will ramp up preparations for their 2024 junior representative seasons on Saturday with an exciting schedule of trial action against Souths at Redfern Oval.

In the first summer hit-out for most of the youngsters, the Lisa Fiaola (under 17s) and Tarsha Gale (19s) girls will take to the field ahead of the boys in the Harold Matthews Development (16s), Harold Matthews (17s) and SG Ball (19s) teams.

The games will feature extended squads and give the coaches an opportunity to test new combinations while building cohesion before the Christmas break.

With the official junior rep seasons set to start in February – except Jersey Flegg, which largely mirrors the NRL season – the budding Sharks will be keen to show their wares in competition after impressing on the training paddock.

Saturday’s fixtures follow on from the Harold Matthews Development (16s) and SG Ball Development (18s) squads tackling their age equivalents in the Illawarra South Coast Dragons’ Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cup teams last weekend.

In encouraging efforts, the Harold Matthews Development ran out 20-4 winners while the SG Ball Development went down 12-8 at Croome Sporting Complex, Albion Park. The games were played in the evening due to the heat.

Experienced coaches Brad Kelly and Dave Howlett remain in charge of the Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides respectively, with Robbie Taylor (Lisa Fiaola) and Isaac Michael (Tarsha Gale) assuming the clipboard duties in the girls ranks.

Tackle, competitive ban backflip: Major changes coming into Souths Juniors competition from 2024

Tackle and competitive bans for some junior age groups are set to be implemented across the Souths Juniors competition in 2024. Here’s why the league has backflipped on its stance from this year.

A year after defying sweeping changes proposed by the NSWRL, the Souths Juniors competition is set to fall into line from 2024 onwards.

In an email communicated to clubs, South Sydney District Junior Rugby Football League CEO Luke Curry confirmed the age of tackling and competitive fixtures would be raised.

“Ages 5-8 will be non-competitive. Under 5s and 6s will play tag for the whole season,” the statement read.

This shapes as a major change from 2023 where tackling was allowed in the U5 and U6 divisions, with competitive divisions played in all age groups except for the U5s.

A number of major reasons were presented for the changes, including excessive transfers at the start of the season impacting competition integrity and poor conduct from players and spectators.

That poor conduct came to a head on A-grade grand final day as wild brawls took place both inside and outside Redfern Oval.

The vision from the league is this leads to a new audience of players and parents, and that this will aid in the transition of players from mini to mod to international football, keeping them in the game for longer.

The statement said the changes would be trialled during the year and reviewed at the conclusion.

Current ideal NSWRL guidelines have the 2024 season as non-competitive up to and including the U10s.

Ahead of last season, South Sydney joined the likes of Manly and Macarthur in defying the changes that were proposed for the start of the 2023 season.

Last November Curry said the decision to opt against the NSWRL proposal was backed by clubs.

“We’ve sent our position to NSWRL and we declined to go into the tag component and non-competitive element (of the changes),” he said.

“We want to keep doing what we do. Sticking to what we’ve always done is our position at the moment.

“It was supported by the clubs. We wouldn’t go in the direction we were if clubs weren’t on board.”

The proposed changes also drew the ire of former The Biggest Loser trainer Shannan Ponton, who believed teaching the right tackle technique at a young age was crucial to helping young children grow confidence in their abilities.

These are the six South Sydney juniors who have stormed into Sunday’s NRL grand final on the back of an extraordinary $100m investment.

NRL: The South Sydney Rabbitohs are through to the NRL Grand Final after a dominating victory over the Manly Sea Eagles in the preliminary finals at Suncorp Stadium at Brisbane. The Rabbitohs will compete in the GF against Melbourne or Penrith.

These are the six South Sydney juniors who have stormed into Sunday’s NRL grand final on the back of an extraordinary $100m investment.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that Kingsford-based Souths Juniors Club has outlaid the staggering amount to propagate rugby league in the proud Rabbitohs heartland.

And the money has helped steer local kids Alex Johnston (La Perouse United), Adam Reynolds (St Peters JRLFC, Alexandria Rovers, La Perouse Panthers, Kensington United), Blake Taaffe (La Perouse Panthers), Cam Murray (Mascot Jets), Keaon Koloamatangi (Mascot Jets) and Campbell Graham (Coogee Wombats/Maroubra Lions) into the decider against Penrith.

Souths Juniors’ money ensures every kid in the local area plays annually for free.

This year alone, Souths Juniors spent $2m on jumpers, shorts, socks, registration and insurance for the area’s 3500 rugby league players.

The cash is also spent on accrediting coaches and officials, rental for ground lighting, ground hire, referee fees and grants for clubs.

“Souths Juniors are so invested in developing their players and this would be the ultimate repayment, to win a premiership for the club,” said Graham.

“It’s just another reason why I want to bring the trophy home.

“I was talking to Cameron Murray the other day about how good the buzz and atmosphere would be around the place this week.

“We are getting videos and messages from people I grew up with saying how excited they are, given it’s a tough time in lockdown back in Sydney.

“This has given them something to smile about which is a great feeling. You know how much the community is invested in the club.

“To hopefully be part of that successful history would be unreal. And there are five other boys who have taken a very similar pathway to me.”

Souths Juniors President Keith McCraw revealed the amount that has been injected into junior rugby league since the club opened in 1957.

“Since the foundation of the club, I’d suggest comfortably $100m that has been put into the propagation of junior rugby league,” McCraw said. “We put in north of $2m a year.

“We cover shorts, socks, jumpers, insurance, we accredit their coaches and officials, we pay the rental, we pay the rental for the lighting at their grounds, we pay for the referees’ fees and give grants to the clubs. We pay everything.

“That’s what the club was built for – to propagate junior rugby league.

“We have some housing estates out here and not everyone can afford to have their kids playing sport. Every kid runs out equal, whether their dad is a doctor or unemployed.

“I’ve seen those six kids come through from nappy grade. We gave them their start and they have never forgotten where they came from. It’s wonderful.”

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly offered high praise to his six locals and Souths Juniors.

“Souths has always been at their strongest when there is a core group of juniors in our side. We had five in our top 17 for the 2014 grand final and it’s wonderful to now have six in 2021,” Solly said.

“Each of those six are not only great players but fantastic role models off the field.

“They absolutely love playing for Souths and we get a lot out of seeing them make the most of the opportunities the Juniors have provided them and watching them graduate into the NRL team and then play in a grand final.

“Despite all the challenges Souths Juniors have had, if you want to play rugby league in South Sydney, it won’t cost you a cent. The investment by the Juniors over many years is a large part of the success we see on the field now.

“Never once has Souths Juniors flinched. They always stepped forward to continue funding junior participation.”

Other Souths juniors playing NRL include Josh Addo-Carr, Addin Fonua-Blake, Dylan Walker, Cam McInnes, Emre Guler and Nat Butcher.
