QRL Grand Finals Weekend Wrap Junior Statewide Competitions

Grand Final weekend delivered on the excitement as teams across the Harvey Norman u19, Cyril Connell Cup and Harvey Norman u17 competitions each showcased their best abilities.

Harvey Norman u19 – Grand Final

Brisbane Tigers 30 def Western Clydesdales 6 at Totally Workwear Stadium.

The Tigers ignited the match with an early try from Sienna Ibrahim, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

2025 Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons – FOOTY FEST Kingaroy – Sat 26 April

Their relentless assault continued as Fleur Ginn and Lishainah Ulugia added to the score, showcasing an unstoppable offensive rhythm.

Despite the Clydesdales’ efforts, which included a retaliation try from Mia Byrnes, the Tigers’ defence held firm.

Kameryn Bray contributed with her own try, while Ulugia’s successful conversions cemented their lead. With each play, it became evident that the Tigers were in complete control.

As the final whistle blew, the Tigers celebrated their confident 30-6 victory, triumphantly marking their place as champions.

The electrifying atmosphere in Totally Workwear Stadium reflected the sheer dominance the Brisbane Tigers displayed, earning them a memorable grand final win.

Cyril Connell Cup – Grand Final

Burleigh Bears 18 def Mackay Cutters 12 at Totally Workwear Stadium

In arguably the best match of the day, the Burleigh Bears triumphed over an admirable Mackay Cutters outfit, to secure the 2025 Cyril Connell Cup.

Running out as favourites, it appeared as if the Bears had one hand on the trophy already after the first 11 minutes, with Captain Tupou Francis and five-eighth Cornelius Kelsall both crossing the try line early.

But a late first half try from Cutters’ lock Eli Woodson would see the underdogs entering the shed with the match on a knifes edge.

The second half opened in a similar fashion to the first, with Tupou Francis scoring his second for the day and the Bears again dominating possession and field position.

Relentless meterage from Tyrell Schwenke, Kingston Seve and Flynn Laffranchi prevented the Cutters from ever mounting any pressure defensively.

A deft boot of Bears halfback Harvey Smith meant that the Cutters’ outside backs were kept busy trying to get out of their own end.

A miraculous late try from Norman Campbell saw the Cutters down a mere 6 points with two minutes to go

But ultimately it was too little too late for the men from Mackay, as a dropped bell after the final siren secured the premiership for the Burleigh Bears, with Tupou Francis taking home the player of the match honours.

Harvey Norman u17 – Grand Final

Brisbane Tigers 32 def Sunshine Coast Falcons 04 at Totally Workwear Stadium.

It was one way traffic in the first of the Statewide Competition Grand Finals, as the Brisbane Tigers outclassed a valiant Sunshine Coast Falcons squad.

It was Ebony Tziros who opened the scoring, being the beneficiary of a brilliant draw and pass play from back rower Leilani Taofinuu.

A late first half try would see the Falcons entering the sheds with a glimmer of hope.

n immediate reply from Ebony Tziros would see the centre secure her second try of the day, as well as knocking in the final nail in the coffin for the girls from the Sunshine Coast.

Hooker Enah Desic was marshalling her troops around the field with composure far beyond her years, as her stout defence and game recognition earnt her player of the match honours.

The scoreline does not truly represent the balance of the game, as possession and field position was somewhat even on the day, but the superior final execution of the Brisbane Tigers allowed them to rack up many more tries on the day.

Mal Meninga Cup – Round 9

Mackay Cutters 24 def Western Clydesdales 16 at Toowoomba Sports Ground.

It was a hard-fought battle, with Jack Thorburn and Toby Woodall shining for the Cutters, both crossing the line for tries that fuelled their team’s momentum.

Lachlan Lyons showed resilience for the Clydesdales with a strong effort, but they couldn’t quite keep pace with the Cutters’ dynamic attack.

Redcliffe Dolphins 46 def Townsville Blackhawks 16 at Jack Manski Oval.

The Dolphins put on a dominant display, with Elijah McKay leading the charge with two spectacular tries.

Townsville fought valiantly with Kyle Bader and Karlos Iraia scoring, but it was clear the Dolphins were in a league of their own on this day.

Tweed Seagulls 52 def Sunshine Coast Falcons 10 at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

The Seagulls took flight in this match proving why they belong on top, with Sam Stephenson netting three tries and Zane Harrison showcasing his kicking skills with six conversions.

Ellyjah Birve managed a try and a goal for the Falcons, but it was a challenging day as the Seagulls proved to be unstoppable.

Burleigh Bears 62 def CQ Capras 0 at Rugby Park.

The Bears put on an absolute clinic, with Bailey Trew, Saxon Innes and Antonio Verhoeven among the multiple try-scorers.

Marley McLaren’s boot contributed greatly, landing nine goals.

CQ Capras struggled to find their footing and ended the match without any points, a tough day for them against such an aggressive opponent.

Souths Logan Magpies 32 def Brisbane Tigers 10 at Totally Workwear Stadium.

The Magpies soared high with standout performances from Jayden Solien and Siosaia Poese, both contributing multiple tries to secure victory.

Brisbane’s Motootua Kia scored with grit, but the Magpies’ team synergy proved too strong and consistent throughout the match.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls 30 def Northern Pride 22 at Barlow Park.

In a thrilling back-and-forth encounter, Matthew Schultz paved the way for the Seagulls with a crucial try.

The Pride fought hard with Maddox Goodwin leading their charge, but Wynnum Manly held on for a well-deserved win, showcasing their determination and teamwork.

Norths Devils 28 def Ipswich Jets 22 at North Ipswich Reserve.

This match delivered intense excitement, with Duquan Talaepa’s electrifying runs giving the Devils an edge.

The Jets, led by Eli Ortiz, kept the pressure on but fell just short as Norths sealed their victory with solid execution in the closing minutes.

The back-and-forth scoring kept fans on the edge of their seats right until the end!

Tweed Seagulls crowned premiers in undefeated Mal Meninga Cup season

Mal Meninga Cup Grand Final Action Photo’s

The Tweed Seagulls stuck to the script in Saturday’s Mal Meninga Cup grand final, finishing season 2024 undefeated to be crowned premiers.

In a dominant performance at Redcliffe’s Kayo Stadium, the Seagulls put their Gold Coast rivals Burleigh Bears to the sword with a 36-12 victory.

It was a fitting finish to a year in which the Seagulls not only ended as minor premiers but also went through the season without recording a single loss and just one draw.

Coach Sam Meskell said he was impressed with how his team overcame the pressure of being the competition leaders to execute against the Bears on Saturday.

“I’m very happy for the boys mostly,” he said.

“They do all the hard work. It’s been a really good season in terms of results and getting the minor premiership and going through undefeated.

“They probably felt a little bit of pressure today so really happy for them that they got the job done at the end of the road.

“Being undefeated… it wasn’t really a focus. I didn’t want to make a deal of it because it applies more pressure. But the boys will be quite proud of it.

“There were games where we behind and we came over the top and there were games where we led so they found a way to not get beat all season and that’s a credit to their resilience.”

Play by Play

Tweed were the first to cross, with Cory Pearse and Billy Wellard combining to capitalise on a Burleigh mistake within the opening minute.

From here however, Burleigh had all the momentum and were firing in attack, constantly threatening with the ball in hand.

They managed to hit back quickly through Jett Bryce in the sixth minute and then earned back-to-back sets, increasing the pressure on Tweed.

It required the Seagulls to defend repetitive sets on the line and this was ultimately where the game was won, as Tweed did not leak a single point in a tense 15 minute period.

A change in momentum then saw Tweed start to runaway with the game as they scored three more tries before the break to go into halftime up 24-6.

Meskell said that defensive period in the first half was the key.

“It was probably everything,” he said.

“If we cracked there and conceded two or three then all of a sudden we’re chasing the game. That was massive. Luckily when we got an opportunity, we capitalised.”

Tweed captain Zane Harrison was named player of the match for his precision and calm nature in attack, while Meskell also gave praise to Wellard and Pearse for stepping up where needed.

Dolphins, Blackhawks romp to Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup grand final

A hot day in Ipswich has seen Redcliffe blow away the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and swim into the final like a pod of angry mean Dolphins.

Fans at North Ipswich Reserve got their money’s worth with two games in one semi-final.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls fans were thinking about finals next week when half Coby Black dominated the first 20 minutes with deft passing and kicking.

Queensland Maroons Long Lunch 2023 – MORE INFO Click here

When Black kicked 80 metres off his own line and Saxon Innes jumped on the ball for his half Black to then step over the line, it looked like the Seagulls had corrected the mistakes of a two-point loss last week to the Dolphins.

Then the second game started, and it was all Dolphins.

Dolphins’ half John Fineanganofo went berserk and from the 25-minute mark until the 58th minute Dolphins scored six tries to dominate and end the final.

Fineanganofo ended up with three tries which varied from dummy half work, to running freely up the middle.

No matter where he ran, he was having a finals day out.

The Dolphins rode it out until the end and a 56-18 win that was built on waiting for your chance.

Dolphins 56 – 28 WM Seagulls
SEMI FINAL – SATURDAY 15TH APRIL

As the heat rose, the big Dolphins didn’t wilt like expected they found new energy that the Wynnum Manly Seagulls couldn’t match.

Dolphins coach Scott Tronc wasn’t too concerned even after that first 20.

“We went away from what we do and a lot of one out running, but once we got our head together and then we were able to do our thing.

“That then allowed our guys like John Fineanganofo to do his thing.

“He’s just a pure footballer, you can put him anywhere and he can do some special things, he’s played hooker and lock and today scores three tries at five eighth.”

The Dolphins second half attacking masterclass inspired the Townsville Blackhawks first half with the Blackhawks steamrolling the Jets with big forwards streaming through the middle.

The Blackhawks won through to another Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup final, with next week being their 10th final appearance since 2009.

Townsville will be trying to right the wrongs of the last two finals losses in 2021 and 2022.

The game was all but over at half time with the Townsville Blackhawks ahead 20-6 and having one eye on the Redcliffe Dolphins next week.

The Blackhawks were outstanding with the full spectrum of skills on display.

They started with the long ball for Rayzarlin Pearson to score in the corner and then the short balls to space came out with Townsville going 100 metres and front rower Jamal Shibasaki running 50 of them.

Elijah-Shane Tapau strolled over and Loranzo Fono barged over.

The Blackhawks strength and speed through the middle meant the Jets had to tighten up and then the Blackhawks would find space on the outside where the defence had become stretched.

Jets v Blackhawks
SEMI FINAL – SATURDAY 15TH APRIL

The Blackhawks targeted the Jets right hand side and kicked well to the corners to make sure the Jets were always jammed in and bringing it out.

Ipswich staged a great fighting finals comeback to score three tries in nine minutes to put some scare into the Blackhawks but the first half was haunting the Jets who weren’t able to peg the lead back.

Then it was the speed of Rayzarlin Pearson who started the points in the fifth minute and ended it in the 68th minute.

Blackhawks coach Zeb Kyle said he was ready for another grand final week.

“Ipswich came back at us and I think if that sin bin happens and we are maybe a man down then that changes the story a bit,” Kyle said.

“It was our first half that won it and then we just held on.
