Jillaroos teammates to lock horns on NSWRL Grand Finals Day

Jillaroos World Cup-winning teammates Simaima Taufa and Kennedy Cherrington tomorrow will be on opposite sides of the field for the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval.

A massive day of action that will see premierships decided for five competitions.

Taufa, who has been a stalwart for Mounties, and Cherrington, who joined Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as a marquee player this season, were part of the starting side that trounced New Zealand 54-4 in the Women’s Rugby League World Cup Final last year.

Mounties finished the season in fourth spot but upset Minor Premiers North Sydney Bears 18-16 to secure their spot in the decider.

While the third-placed Bulldogs ground their way to a 16-8 win over the Illawarra Steelers.

Mounties has been one of the most consistent teams in the competition after winning the title in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2019, but Cherrington was confident the Bulldogs would be able to hold their own.

“They have some very strong props and forwards, but I think we can match them,” she said.

“I’m confident in my team. We know how good they are and we’re ready to match them.

“It will be a middles game early and then a battle of the backs. We’ll be ready.”

The Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership will be the final match at Leichhardt Oval, with the day kicking off with the decider for the Women’s Country Championships.

Followed by the Junior Representatives Grand Finals; UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s), UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s) and Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s).

The Women’s Country Championship will determine the best women’s team from regional NSW and will involve the two best teams from northern and southern NSW.

Newcastle Maitland Region Knights, who will be looking for their second title after winning the competition in 2021, will take on Monaro Colts.

Harold Matthews Cup

The UNE Harold Matthews Cup will feature the Newcastle Knights, who had the second-best record for attack and defence in the competition, against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Canterbury Bulldogs secured their spot from fourth place after upsetting the top-of-the-table Penrith Panthers.

The UNE SG Ball Cup will feature the fourth-placed Parramatta Eels, who knocked the No.1 team, Canberra Raiders, out of the finals, against the third-placed Newcastle Knights, who scored a hard-fought win over Penrith Panthers.

Tarsha Gale Cup

The Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup will be an absorbing contest with the two most dominant teams of the competition, Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs meeting for the first time.

The two teams did not come together during the regular season due to the nine-round draw for the 13-side competition and there is little separating them

The Bulldogs just edge the Roosters in attack, while the Roosters were slightly better than the Bulldogs defensively.

Fans can catch all the action from five Grand Finals for only $5 at the gate, while children 12 and under are free. All matches will also be live streamed on NSWRL TV on the NSWRL Facebook page.

The Grand Final results will impact on the representative teams for Country v City at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Thursday 4 May, Saturday 6-Sunday 7 May.

There will be eight games played over the three days including Women’s Open Age, Men’s Open Age, Under 16s, Under 18s, Women’s Under 17s, Women’s Under 19s, Wheelchair Rugby League and Physical Disability Rugby League.

Young gun signs on for NRLW Sharks

She hit the headlines and the TV highlight reels with a spectacular try while playing for the NSW Under-19 Baby Blues, with young fullback Jada Taylor now committing her immediate playing future to the Sharks in signing a two-year NRLW contract.

Still just 19 but one of the emerging talents in women’s rugby league, Taylor is set to excite the fans on the field with her attacking talents.

Wt the same time aims to make a contribution in the community, working for and representing Sharks Have Heart in the Indigenous space.

After playing two games for the Sharks in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team, Taylor hopes to step up and produce a few more try scoring highlights for the first Cronulla NRLW side.

“It’s the try that keeps on giving,” Taylor joked in reference to her 109 metre effort playing for the NSW Baby Blues. “Obviously I’m with the big girls now and that might mean not as many tries, but hopefully I still get few.

“I’m so happy to be here, I’m pumped and can’t wait to take to the field with the (Sharks) girls,” Taylor said.

The announcement of Taylor’s signing coming on the back of the recruitment of representative players Quincy Dodd, Emma Tonegato and more recently Holli Wheeler.

With Tonegato hinting at a permanent switch into the halves, the youngster from northern NSW isn’t taking anything for granted but is tipped to fill the number one jersey.

“I’m here to do the best for the team and I’ll play wherever that is,” Taylor responded.

While the initial three Sharks NRLW signings involved players with senior rep experience, coach Tony Herman believes the youthful exuberance and undoubted talent of Taylor will add some x-factor to his team in 2023.

“Jada is a naturally gifted footballer with great speed and footwork and it’s very exciting to have her here at the Sharks,” Herman said.

“Most rugby league fans will be aware of her length of the field try for the NSW 19’s but they wouldn’t be aware of the amount of work she puts in to create those opportunities.

“She is an exciting prospect with exceptional talent and Sharks fans are going to really enjoy watching her in the black, white and blue.”

Growing up in Tamworth, Taylor played her rugby league against the boys until age 12, but when opportunities dried up was forced to turn her athletic talents to OzTag and Rugby Sevens.

Moving to Sydney and boarding school in Year 10, Taylor returned to rugby league in entering the women’s pathways at the Roosters, before enduring the set back of two shoulder reconstructions.

She would quickly bounce back to prominence, her return culminating in selection for the Baby Blues and the spectacular length of the field effort that attracted 1.7 million views online and was arguably the best individual try of 2022 at any level of the game.

Taylor was also voted player of the match for her performance for the NSW 19’s in their win over Queensland.

The addition of Taylor to the Sharks squad represents another positive signing, complementing those of fellow ‘spine’ players.

Tonegato and Dodd at hooker, and with more quality players yet to be announced the Cronulla side is building a team to compete with the leading outfits in the NRLW competition.

The Semi-finals of the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership on Sunday will help determine the make-up of the City-Country sides, who do battle in a fortnight, and ultimately the Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues Origin team.

NSW Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder plus Country coach Ruan Sims and City coach Kate Mullaly will be in the stands at Leichhardt Oval.

Sims and Mullaly were assistant Origin coaches last year and will be there again in 2023.

Hilder will not finalise her Origin team until after the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final on Saturday 29 April.

But there are Country-City jerseys to be decided before that, for the annual clash on Thursday 4 May at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah.

“We’ve been looking over personnel for those two teams for the past couple of months,” Hilder said.

“There are still six weeks to the opening Origin game so a lot can happen. Every player in this weekend’s Semi-finals should have that mindset that rep jerseys are on the line.”

The first Semi-final has the North Sydney Bears (1) against Mounties (4) after the women in red-and-black claimed the Minor Premiership for the second consecutive season last weekend.

“Both the Bears and Mounties are coming off wins in the final club round,” Hilder said.

“For me the Bears might be just ahead with the amount of experience and talent across the field.

The halves combination of 2022 Origin five-eighth Kirra Dibb and current Dally M winner Raecene McGregor has grown strong for the final five rounds of the competition.

McGregor took over the No.7 role from Silver Ferns hooker Nita Maynard (pictured above).

“The forward pack is going really well too with Sarah Togatuki and Kalosipani Hopoate in great form,” Hilder said.

“In saying that, Mounties have gone into games and come out winners when few expected them to.

They have a tremendous fighting spirit coming from that go-forward by the props and back-rowers.

Blatcheys Blues – On Sale Now

“This will be a good physical game and I can easily see Mounties getting the upper hand in the middle, but the Bears outside backs should prove too strong.”

The second Semi-final has the Illawarra Steelers (2) up against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (3), where Sky Blue fullback Emma Tonegato will play another weekend at lock for Illawarra.

“I’m sure it’s to get the ball in Emma’s hands more often and the Steelers don’t lose anything with Teagan Berry at fullback,” Hilder said.

“She’s fast and will bring the ball back at speed. Steelers can utilise her running better at No.1.”

Hilder believes the match should swing on the ability of the halves to create the attacking raids.

Steelers’ Taliah Fuimaono and Rachael Pearson face the equally crafty Gayle Broughton and Tayla Preston.

“Steelers hooker Keeley Davis is also sure to get her middles to muscle up and going forward, and I understand Kezie Apps (leg) will undergo a fitness test closer to game day.

She would be an added bonus if she can play,” Hilder said.

“To be honest I can’t pick this one. They are evenly balanced sides so whoever turns up on Sunday to play good football should come out winners.

“The Bulldogs have a great forward pack with the likes of Holli Wheeler, Kennedy Cherrington and Monalisa Soliola and a great set of halves, while Illawarra also have rep halves and highly-talented outside backs.”

Both Semi-finals at 11am and 12.45pm will be live streamed on NSWRL TV.

HNWP Sharks season ends with heavy Knights loss

Cronulla Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s team had their hopes of finishing the season on a high note crushed by the Newcastle Knights on Saturday, when they were defeated 34-4 in their final game of the season.

Despite already being out of finals contention after a narrow two-point loss to the Steelers in Round 9, the Sharks were determined to make their trip up north worthwhile.

Things looked promising for the Shark’s early on, winger Zali Fay, securing the first four points in the opening minute of the match.

However, the home side were quick to respond, with fullback Tamika Upton slipping through Cronulla’s defensive line to score and conversion from Jesse Southwell from out wide saw the Sharks trailing by two points for much of the first half.

Yasmyn Clydesdale, was next to score for the opposition, taking advantage of a gap in the Shark’s defense and breaking the line virtually untouched, leaving Cronulla down by 8-points at half-time.

Ill-discipline and errors have been an ongoing theme for the Sharks women’s team this season, and unfortunately proved costly again in the second half of the game.

Despite the team’s efforts, both Upton and Clydesdale crossed for doubles, with the Shark’s struggling to gain quality field position against the Knight’s strong defence. A final try from the opposition’s dummy half sealed the win for the Knights.

The Sharks HNWP team finished the season in seventh position on the competition ladder with four wins and six losses.

The Sharks will now shift focus to the upcoming NRLW season and to signing and announcing their playing squad.
