NRL Schoolgirls Cup grand final live stream: Underdogs Erindale take on undefeated Hills Sports High

Another trademark Erindale College fightback fell agonisingly short as Hills Sports’ dominant first half proved the difference in the first-ever NRL Schoolgirls grand final. Relive all the action.

Hills will now go on to face the winner of the Queensland competition in the national final on September 13 at Netstrata Jubilee Oval.

Erindale put the pressure to Hills early on, forcing mistakes to keep hold of the ball, but they couldn’t cross for the first try.

That came for Hills with Esther Tuipulotu regathering a kick and planting the ball amid multiple Erindale defenders in the corner.

It didn’t take them long to add to their advantage, along the other wing this time, as Manua Moleka found some space.

Mya McGlynn sparked an Erindale try late in the half, with Ella Kelly benefiting to score a try right in the corner.

Tuipulotu then scored her second try just before the break to give Hills a 14-4 halftime lead.

Hills came out of the sheds firing, and it took just a few minutes for Moleka to score her second try.

Erindale tried to respond quickly, but a strong Hills defence kept them out until Kelly managed to find some space again, dodging past Hills to plant her second.

Uta Uatisone Poka added another try soon after as the travelling Erindale fans got the whiff of an upset.

But despite the late comeback, Erindale just couldn’t match Hills with the final score 20-14.

PREVIEW

Erindale College will head into the NRL Schoolgirls grand final on Wednesday as the ultimate underdog when they face off against the undefeated Hills Sports High School.

But it is not going to stop the girls from the nation’s capital from believing.

The Canberra-based side barely scraped through to the semifinals, only picking up one win in the pool stage over Matraville Sports High School and narrowly beating out Illawarra Sports on points difference to make the knockout stages.

No one expected Erindale to make it to the grand final, but the team turned it up a notch in the semis, upsetting Bass 12-8 to book their place in Wednesday’s decider.

“I’m so ecstatic for the girls,” Erindale coach Ashley Barnes said of the shock win.

“Obviously we came in as massive underdogs and to turn up and play like that, the girls should be very proud and the school is very proud of them.”

The massive NRL Schoolgirls Cup grand final clash against Hills Sports will be available to stream LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV on Wednesday at 11:30am, ahead of the must-watch Peter Mulholland Cup final between Westfields Sports and Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

Despite Erindale’s underdog status, coach Barnes said he has complete belief in his team to pull off another upset and take out the title.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we … continue to work,” he said.

“A lot of these girls haven’t been playing rugby league for a long time, some only six months to a year, so it’s still all so new to them.

“We’ll be going home and watching the footage (from the semi-finals), watching Hills and working on the areas we think need improving.”

Hills Sports High have been the standouts of the inaugural NRL Schoolgirls Cup competition, coming through the pool stages undefeated.

The semi-final win over Westfields Sports High showcased the side’s never-say-die attitude, coming back from a 6-4 halftime deficit to take out the match 18-12.

“We dug deep when we were 4-6 down after the first half and we came back, it was just crazy,” Hills co-captain Olivia Vaalele said after the match.

While they might enter the grand final as the favourites, Vaalele said the side neded to have an honest appraisal of their semi-final performance with several areas that need to be worked on.

“We’ll really need to work on our penalties, just staying onside and keeping everything together,” she said.

“I’m definitely nervous for the grand final, but I think with the support we have we can put in a good performance.”

Peter Mulholland Cup Semi Finals

Peter Mulholland Cup semifinals live stream:

Patties Blacktown v St Dominic’s, Erindale v Westfields

While Westfields were class under pressure, they will have to be at their very best in the final if Patties Blacktown produce a repeat of their NRL Schoolboys Cup semi masterpiece. Relive the action.

Westfields held off a tenacious challenge from Erindale to set up a Peter Mulholland Cup grand final showdown with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday.

Lachlan Galvin was one of the stars of the show, scoring a try and contributing to multiple others to help his side to come from behind to beat the Canberra-based school 22-16 at Campbelltown Stadium.

It was the second year in a row Erindale have gone out at ther semifinal stage.

Westfields’ Roy Quiroz-Mapusa said getting to the grand final is an incredible feeling.

“What an adrenaline rush,” he said.

“We just had to keep believing in each other.

“There’s a reason Erindale got to the finals, but I had full confidence in the boys.”

Erindale gained the advantage early, with Olli Bolatagici benefiting from a Jonah Anderson kick to claim the first try.

Australian Schoolboy Xavier Cacciotti doubled the advantage for Erindale soon after, and a perfect two from two from Sam Gash gave the Canberra side a solid 12-0 lead early on.

Westfields coach Troy Weeden admitted the two early tries was concerning, but the boys didn’t let it impact their confidence.

“To go 12-0 down made me nervous,” Weeden said.

“Our mentality changed after that, we know we can score points when we are in the area, but we just weren’t there enough.”

Galvin was the first to reduce the deficit with a try followed by Brycen Anae Roberts and Sosefo Finau in quick succession to hand Westfields a 16-12 lead heading into the break.

Westfields made it four unanswered tries 10 minutes into the second half as Heith Pritchard powered through from dummy half for the try. A third successful conversion for Quiroz-Mapusua put the side 10 points in front.

Erindale’s Bolatagici was able to claw back some points off the back of an impressive run from Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Koui, but an unsuccessful conversion from Gash kept Erindale just out of reach.

The pro-Erindale crowd were fired up and a sin-bin for Westfields Markuzz Ofanoa only made them louder.

But Westfields held their nerve.

Super Patties Blacktown turn in semifinal special

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have shocked the NRL Schoolboys competition by demolishing the previously undefeated St Dominic’s 32-0 to secure a spot in next week’s grand final.

Fullback Wilson De Courcey called the result and performance ‘amazing’.

“Just crazy,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline, I thought it would be a closer game.

“But we’ve been aiming for this since the start of the season and to get this result is amazing.”

The opening few minutes were very physical with neither side giving an inch.

Marcellus Iakopo got the scoring underway early, dodging past St Dom’s defence before Thomas Epere doubled the lead soon after, following a kick from De Courcey.

St Dom’s were plagued by errors close to the line and the Pats defence was unyielding.

Australian Schoolboy De Courcey grabbed a try of his own just before halftime to extend the lead to 18-0 and it was a long way back for St Dom’s.

Watch a full replay of Patrician Brothers Blacktown v St Dominic’s College.

St Dom’s were gifted a much-needed advantage midway through the second half when Patties player Langa Tokuafu was sent to the sin-bin for a late tackle.

De Courcey said going a man down was frustrating.

“It’s little things like that, discipline, that we really need to sort out,” De Courcey said.

“If it was a closer game, that could have really affected us.”

St Dom’s though couldn’t break through. The closest they got was when a powerful charge from Jack Attard was thwarted by the defence right on the line.

Even down a player, Patties were unstoppable.

A brilliant run from Jaxon Edgar was rewarded as Jack Nicholas found the tryline, and co-captain Finau Latu added a second try in as many minutes to put St Dom’s out of their misery.

Patties’ confidence only grew from there as Nicholas picked up his second try of the match for a stunning 32-0 lead.

PREVIEW

The grand finalists from 2022 may be gone, but there is certainly no doubting the quality of this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup final four.

Patties Fairfield went out in the group stages while Hills were quarterfinal victims, but in Westfields Sports, Erindale College, St Dominic’s and Patrician Brothers Blacktown, there are four teams in peak form and all are capable of winning the title on their best day.

And the semifinal draw only adds to the intrigue.

Catch all of the action from Campbelltown Stadium LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 12:30pm on Wednesday, along with coverage of the NRL Schoolgirls Cup semi-finals from 10am. See the full draw below.

Westfields boast a four-game unbeaten run as they prepare for a match-up with Erindale.

Winger Will Craig has been one of the stars of the show, scoring 10 tries in those four games.

FOOTBALL FACTORIES: EVERY AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOY OF THE LAST DECADE

“He’s just so strong,” coach Troy Weeden said after Westfields’ 52-6 quarterfinal demolition of All Saints Maitland.

“He’s good at the art, everything he does is just superb and he gets us out of a lot of trouble.”

Australian schoolboy Lachlan Galvin has also been pivotal to Westfields’ success this year and Weeden praised the No.6’s ability to ‘always scoring tries, or contribute to them.’

While heading into the semifinals with plenty of momentum, Weedon conceded there were a few areas he wanted his team to pick up in.

“We need to fix our possession with the ball and control overall,” he said.

“As long as they put on a good performance and look after themselves we’ll be in with a shot.”

RELIVE ALL THE QUARTERFINAL ACTION HERE

Erindale’s quarterfinal clash against Endeavour Sports High School was ‘a bit of a weird game’, according to coach Ashley Barnes.

They eventually pulled off a 28-24 golden point win to reach the semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year they were knocked out in a thriller by Hills.

Barnes said he’s not underestimating the challenge Westfields will pose.

“If we’re as ill disciplined as we were against Endeavour, we’re going to have a really tough game,” Barnes said.

“They’re a powerful side with some really good players there, so we’ll really need to tidy up our game.

“I think if we just focus on us we’ll be really competitive.”

Jack Nicholas scored four tries in the quarterfinals.

In the other game, Patrician Brothers Blacktown have suddenly found a winning formula and head into their clash with St Dominic’s College feeling good about their prospects.

Their 64-6 win over Victorian University Secondary College in the quarterfinals featured an incredible 12 tries, four of which came from Jack Nicholas.

Nicholas said the result was a testament to how well the team are working together now after they fixed the mistakes that plagued them throughout the competition.

“We’re spreading the ball really well, our defence is really good,” Nicholas said after the quarterfinal win.

“Those four tries came from my teammates, we were just strong as a team and hopefully that takes us all the way.”

With St Dom’s going into the clash without yet losing a match in the competition, Nicholas said it’ll be a really tough battle.

“It’ll be a hard game, they’re a good team,” he said.

“It’s always tough when we play Dom’s but we’ll get back to training, work hard and give it a good crack.”

St Doms have been impressive form all year.

St Dom’s struggled with discipline issues during their 26-18 win over Hills Sports, letting in three tries in the second half and having Jack Ewer sent to the sin bin for a high tackle after looking comfortable in the opening half.

“We just switched off,” coach Kyle Churchill said.

“We weren’t cohesive as a group both in defence and in attack, and it took its toll.”

Erindale eye 2 titles

NRL Schoolboys/Girls semifinals live stream: Erindale just one of two schools with shot at title double

Twenty-five years on from their last rugby league schools success, Erindale College have their eyes on not one, but two titles. Catch their boys and girls teams LIVE on Wednesday from 10am.

Watch a full replay of Erindale College vs. Endeavour Sports High School.

Only two schools are still in with a shot at the unique Schoolboys/Girls rugby league double.

One would hardly be surprising. Westfields are, after all, a Sydney sporting powerhouse.

The other shows the reward for hard work and enterprise. Erindale College, the winners of back-to-back boys titles in the late 1990s, are a school on the move.

And, according to Ashley Barnes, who coaches both teams, it’s where ‘we want our program to be every year.’

Erindale have passed every test so far this year.

The Canberra-based school face big NRL Schoolboys/Girls semifinals at Campbelltown Stadium on Wednesday. The boys take on Westfields while the girls will be up against Bass High.

All of the action from the NRL Schoolboys and Schoolgirls semi finals will be available to stream LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV. See the schedule below for full details.

Barnes said it’s a fantastic achievement for the school to be still represented in the competition with both the girls and boys sides.

“We want our program in and around those finals every year and to have both the boys and the girls in the semi finals on the same day is a great achievement for the school.”

The girls have rounded into form at the right time. After defeats to Illawarra Sports and Westfields, they played their best game of the season to take down Matraville 28-14.

Meanwhile, a golden point quarterfinal thriller against Endeavour has put the boys one step closer to breaking a 25-year drought.

Erindale had an elite three-year Schoolboys run between 1996 and 1998, but success has eluded them since.

And memories of being knocked out by Hill Sports in the semifinal stage last year still burn bright.

“We got done in golden point last year, so that was pretty devastating,” Barnes said.

“We do have a number of boys from that side last year, so I know they’re pretty eager to change that around.”

Barnes said the boys understand what a big opportunity this competition is for both them and their school.

“They’re proud to be at Erindale,” he said.

“They know the stakes of each game and they enjoy playing against such big players and teams in the competition.”

Looking ahead to the semifinal against Westfields, Barnes said he and his team know how difficult it will be.

“We’re under no illusions on the challenge we’re coming up against,” he said.

“Westfields is a very impressive side, they’ve got a number of really good players, they play a very powerful game of footy.

Erindale knock-out reigning premiers to advance to PMC Finals

Erindale knock-out reigning premiers

Erindale College have eliminated the reigning Peter Mulholland Cup premiers, Patrician Brothers Fairfield, defeating them 22-10 at Seiffert Oval to advance to the quarter finals.

Erindale centre Mark Tuialii was a standout for the red, black and white, proving a handful on the right-edge and scoring the match sealing try.

Erindale will now cruise through to the quarter finals of the 2023 competition undefeated, beating out Patrician Brothers, Illawarra SHS and Matraville SHS.

The ACT side started the game in perfect fashion, gaining early field position to strike on the right edge through Dakai Lilo-Bolatagaci to crack the first points.

After some solid Fairfield defence, Erindale finally cracked through for their second of the day, this time Sam Gash linking up with the opposite centre Peter Soward to extend their lead to 8-nil.

Erindale left the door ajar after an impressive first half, making a mistake coming out of trouble to give Patrician Brothers an opportunity.

Fairfield made them pay, Saia Alatini crashing over in the final minutes to close the gap to 8-6 at the halftime break.

Erindale coach Ash Barnes fired his boys up at halftime and they responded early, pouncing on a Fairfield mistake to open the scoring in the second half through Xavier Cacciotti.

Gash had an off day with the boot, missing his first three shots at conversion, leaving the scores 12-6 after 33 minutes.

Patrician Brothers fought their way back in the game, yet again making Erindale pay for an unforced error with Jezia Tua’au going over in the corner, closing the score to 12-10.

The match entered an arm-wrestle for the next ten minutes with both sides showing fight and some outstanding scrambling defence.

But it was the man of the match who broke the deadlock, Mark Tuialii, who received some early ball from Mitchell Brophy to show his speed and footwork to score in the corner.

Gash’s conversion waved away, holding a tight 16-10 lead with six minutes to go.

Fairfield attempted a short kick-off but it was defused by the Erindale defence before giving away back-to-back penalties which killed their chances of a comeback.

Halfback Ethan Alaia put the game to bed, springing off his left-foot to beat four defenders and score the match winner in an incredible individual effort.

Gash got a great cheer from the crowd as he converted the try to extend Erindale’s lead to 22-10 at fulltime.

NRL Schoolboys live stream: Erindale look to make big impression early against Illawarra

Erindale flex their muscles

Erindale flex their muscles

A try of the competition candidate and a stand-out showing from Ethan Alaia were just part of the dynamic Erindale package on display in their big Peter Mulholland Cup win over Illawarra.

Relive the action.

Erindale have flexed their muscles with a statement opening round victory over Illawarra, running away 38-8 winners in a dominant performance at Berkeley Sports Club on Thursday.

Five-eighth Ethan Alaia was a standout performer for the visitors, picking up two first half tries and showcasing a mean stepping and running game.

“He’s got some frightening speed,” coach Ashley Barnes said about his young No.6.

“He’s been playing a lot of hooker so he’s still adjusting to five-eighth.

“The more he plays there though the better he’s getting and he showed that today.”

Coach Barnes identified Max Millan as a key performer for his side for his tireless work in the front row, as well as Laurie Daley Cup gun Xavier Cacciotti for his running game and contact in defence.

Country U18 player Xavier Cacciotti was excellent for Erindale.

Max Mercer, captain of the Monaro Colts Laurie Daley Cup side, was another top performer, picking up two tries from second row, the second of which was a great bursting run off a short ball from Alaia.

Try of the match came within the opening minutes, with Laurie Daley Cup star Xavier Cacciotti breaking down the right flank and beating a number of tackles, before fullback Sam Gash was on hand to finish the move under the sticks.

Illawarra’s sole try of the opening half came through Tyrone Amone, leading to some tempers flaring from both sides after the post-try celebrations.

That was all the fight the Illawarra side would show however, with damaging front rower Palu Tuasala being the only diamond in the rough for the home side, as well as big interchange forward Tony Taani, who got a rousing reception from the home crowd with every hit-up.

Erindale’s other tries would come through Alex Sweeney and Olli Bolatagici down a damaging right flank, with centre Mark Tuialii showcasing great skill in the buildup down that side.

“I think we did some really good things for a round one performance,” coach Barnes said.

“I think there were still some periods where we weren’t playing to the standards we want to … a bit wayward with the footy at times, lacking a bit of discipline.

“There were a lot of positives to take away from that game though.”

Illawarra put a late consolation on the board through pacey centre Harry Wililo, forcing his way through the tiring Erindale defence, but it took nothing away from an electric opening round performance from the visitors.

PREVIEW Erindale flex their muscles

Erindale will be looking for a repeat of their thumping 2022 first round triumph over Illawarra when the two sides meet again in the 2023 Peter Mulholland Cup next Thursday.

The Canberra-based team features some of the most talented juniors from across the Raiders junior rep system in SG Ball, Harold Matthews, as well as the Monaro Colts in the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cups.

Coach Ashley Barnes hopes the more mature players in his side will lift those around them after gaining experience in the City v Country U18s match recently, with the likes of Xavier Cacciotti and Samuel Gash playing for the Country side.

You catch every moment of this blockbuster match at Collegians Sports Ground from 2pm on Thursday exclusively on KommunityTV as part of our two-year deal to cover the NRL Schoolboys Cup competition.

The Erindale side also features promising Harold Matthews Cup stars Jonah Anderson and Mitchell Brophy who will control the spine alongside Cacciotti.

Erindale reached the final four last year, beating Patrician Brothers, Blacktown in the quarter finals before going down to Hill Sports 22-18 in a semifinal thriller. They began their campaign with a 12-try rout of Illawarra.

Hopes are high for another big run this year.

Erindale College made it all the way through to nthe final four in 2022.

“A lot of them have grown a lot through their junior reps work over the past few months,” Barnes said.

“I think if we play to our potential, we’ll be tough to beat.

“We put a good performance on the Illawarra side last year, so no doubt they’ll want to turn that around.”

The Illawarra side features a number of victorious Laurie Daley Cup stars with the Illawarra South Coast Dragons, such as devastating prop forward Palu Tausala.

A number of Illawarra Steelers Harold Matthews Cup representatives make up the backline, including halfback Kade Reed, rapid centre Hayden Buchanan and winger Harry Wililo.

Coach Brett Kelly highlighted Darnell Te Ahuru as another to watch from the wing, as a former high jumper of 1.92m, he’ll be near impossible to contain under the high ball.

“We know they’re normally pretty strong the Erindale side,” Kelly said.

“But I reckon we’ve got some pretty solid forwards and some good pace to burn in the outside flanks.

“If we play well we’re more than a good chance of taking it out.”
