Author : Michael Crutcher QRL contributor

St Patrick’s & Mackay breaks Confraternity drought

One of the most successful schools in Confraternity Carnival history broke a 22-year drought today in a dramatic finish to the prestigious schoolboys’ carnival in Rockhampton.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay – the school of State of Origin players Daly Cherry-Evans, Wendell Sailor and Shannon Hegarty – outlasted gallant Padua College, Kedron 10-8 in a gripping Confraternity Shield final.

The decider came down to a scrambling finish as Padua College peppered the Mackay line – their last play went through nine sets of hands and included a regathered kick – but the Brisbane team was unable to haul in a 10-0 halftime deficit.

The win restored St Patrick’s College to the top of a Confraternity Carnival they once dominated. In a 16-year period from 1988, St Patrick’s won eight Shield titles including five in a row.

But they had not won since defeating St Mary’s College, Toowoomba in the 2003 decider on the Gold Coast.

This is the 45th Confraternity Carnival, drawing 56 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

The Carnival is run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League and was hosted by The Cathedral College.

This “Confro” was difficult to predict.

The Shield semi-finalists included teams from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and Brisbane. And the mixture of young squad and schools who had come off their rugby union seasons made it guesswork.

The carnival came down to a Mackay team led by cane farmer and rookie coach Shane Mau making the most of its opportunities in wins over Confro powerhouses Ignatius Park College, Townsville, hosts The Cathedral College and the brave Padua College team.

“That was so nail-biting,” Mau said. “We were riding that finish because it was just such a close game.

“We got to the front but Padua came back. They are just a great side. They never give in and we knew we would have to work really hard to beat them.

“To be a part of this is just so special for everyone involved. Our squad is just a great group of young men.

“We’ve got some really good players in our team who are well known in schoolboy footy but we also have a full squad that just never stopped trying all week.

The win comes down to the whole squad.”

Halfback Adam McSherry, contracted to the NRL Dolphins, is one of those high-profile schoolboys who caused trouble for St Patrick’s rivals across the week.

McSherry created one of the first line breaks as St Patrick’s dominated the first half before Padua College’s reply.

Five-eighth and player-of-the-carnival Damon Humphrys, contracted to the NRL Bulldogs, sparked the Padua attack as the southerners scored twice in the second half.

Padua College had played its first rugby league game of the year in Monday’s opening pool round after claiming the Associated Independent Colleges’ First XV rugby union title. St Patrick’s had been involved in their regional rugby league competition.

Goal-kicking proved the difference with McSherry’s single conversion of St Patrick’s two tries enough to land St Patrick’s ninth Shield triumph.

The Bob Lindner Trophy, for the bottom tier of Division 1, stayed locally as Rockhampton Grammar School claimed the title on countback after a 20-all draw with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate went to St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane 18-12 against AIC rival Villanova College, Coorparoo.

Another AIC school – St Edmund’s College, Ipswich – claimed the Division 2 Confraternity Bowl in an 18-0 victory over All Souls St Gabriel’s College, Charters Towers.

Division 3 was again hard-fought between teams from across the state. The highest-ranking Confraternity Cup went to Townsville’s Ryan Catholic College with a 16-0 win over McAuley College, Beaudesert.

The Confraternity Challenge was won by St Mary’s College, Cairns, defeating St John’s School, Roma 20-16.

The inaugural Division 4 final was fought out between Brisbane Catholic Education schools Trinity College, Beenleigh and Emmaus College, Jimboomba.

Trinity College won the Confraternity Classic 10-4, surviving a last-minute attacking raid by Emmaus College.

Confraternity Carnival Takes Off At Suncorp Stadium

The 2023 Confraternity Carnival opened at Queensland rugby league’s most famous ground today, sparking another week of action featuring more than 1200 students from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

Confraternity Carnival Takes Off At Suncorp Stadium (Photo credit: St Laurence’s College)

Host school St Laurence’s College met Villanova College at Suncorp Stadium in the curtain-raiser to the Broncos-Titans NRL clash. It was the first time that “Confro” had featured at Suncorp Stadium in the carnival’s four decades of history.

St Laurence’s opened the carnival in style with a 26-16 win over Villanova in the boys’ Division 2 match.

Confraternity Carnival Takes Off At Suncorp Stadium (Photo credit: St Laurence’s College)

The Associated Independent Colleges rivals attracted large groups of supporters to Suncorp Stadium for a game that showed both teams are prepared for strong Carnival performances.

St Laurence’s five-try haul was shared among the team including, Finn Mackay, Jack Tuite, Hudson Burgess and Campbell Wilson.

Villanova made it to the line three times thanks to two tries by Jackson Connor and a thirty-third minute try by Larry Clark.

An opening ceremony and the traditional Mass service will be held tonight with all squads featuring.

The Carnival proper will begin tomorrow – the traditional Monday start – at St Laurence’s College’s playing fields at Runcorn and run until Friday when finals are held. This will be the 43rd Confro and the first hosted by St Laurence’s College.

It will again be sponsored by CQ University.

More than 1000 schoolboys and more than 200 schoolgirls will play this week. They will represent 52 schools in the boys’ competition and 12 in the girls draw.

That’s an increase of four boys’ teams and three girls’ teams on last year’s Carnival in Mackay.

In its four decades, Confro has become one of the nation’s best rugby league nurseries.

Seven Confraternity Carnival graduates featured in the Maroons squad for the second match of the 2023 State of Origin series: Daly Cherry-Evans (St Patrick’s College, Mackay), Cameron Munster (Emmaus College, Rockhampton).

Valentine Holmes (Ignatius Park College, Townsville), Ben Hunt and Harry Grant (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon), Lindsay Collins (Padua College, Kedron) and Xavier Coates (Marymount College, Burleigh Waters).

Organised by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, Confraternity Carnival was held every year from 1980 until 2019.

In 2020, the carnival could not be held because of Covid-19. In 2021, “Confro” had reached its quarter-final stages at Iona College when a Covid-19 lockdown in southeast Queensland forced its immediate cancellation.

It returned to normal last year

It returned to normal last year with Townsville’s Ignatius Park College winning a second consecutive Confraternity Shield.

The boys’ carnival is contested in three divisions of 16 teams (Divisions 1 and 2) and 20 teams (Division 3).

The make-up of the divisions can be found on the QISSRL website: www.confraternitycarnival.com.au Teams can play up to two matches each day.

The girls’ teams will each play two games on Monday 26 June and two games on Tuesday 27 June.

Those results will determine the order for Thursday’s finals, during which each team will play one match.

The girls’ Shield grand final will be held at 11am on Thursday 29 June. The Trophy grand final will be held for the first time at 10am on 29 June.

Lockdown brings Confraternity Carnival to early end

Author : QISSRL Media Release

COVID impacted on Confraternity Carnival for the second successive year, but only after two days of superb schools action at Iona College.

Organisers made the decision to cancel the 41st annual Carnival just before finals matches began after the Queensland Premier announced a three-day lockdown would begin at 6pm tonight.

That announcement came as the final pool matches for the boys were underway while the inaugural girls’ competition had reached its last pool matches.

“Confro”, sponsored by CQ University, brought together more than 1230 players, mostly from Catholic schools across Queensland.

There was an audible groan around Iona College on Brisbane’s bayside as the decision to call off the remainder of the carnival was announced.

Iona delivered an outstanding carnival, overcoming the disappointment of last year’s full cancellation with first-class facilities and volunteers.

However, the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League was left without a choice but to end the carnival as the lockdown impacted on each of the 50 schools that had travelled from all parts of the state to compete.

“The health and safety of our participants is our priority at all times,” QISSRL President Peter Elmore said.

“We thank everyone who has worked so hard for this carnival. We have enjoyed an outstanding three days, beginning with Sunday’s opening mass and ceremony.

“Iona College has been a brilliant host. It’s been a wonderful carnival. The spirit of play across the last two days has been excellent. The spirit of confraternity was upheld.

“We didn’t have the chance to gather last year and, while we couldn’t play out this week, we can focus on the many positives that the first three days gave us.

“While we are unable to play finals matches, more than 1230 students had the opportunity to become Confro players.

“They are now part of the Confro community and will always be part of that community.”

The Confro community runs deep across Australia’s rugby league scene with the likes of Johnathan Thurston, Wendell Sailor, Anthony Milford, Ben Hunt, Matt Bowen, Matt Scott, Nate Myles, Daly Cherry-Evans and Xavier Coates among its many graduates.

The 2021 records will show multiple unbeaten teams during the last two days.

Across the girls’ and boys’ competitions, Marymount College, Burleigh Waters, St Patrick’s College, Mackay and The Cathedral College, Rockhampton, were unbeaten in all of their qualifying matches.

The cancellation prevented an exciting afternoon of quarter-finals. Ignatius Park College, Townsville – the defending champions in the boys’ Confraternity Shield chase – were scheduled to meet heavyweights St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon.

Ignatius Park did not concede a point in two matches yesterday, but they started slowly today as Marist College, Ashgrove raced to a 14-0 lead in their pool clash.

But Ignatius Park then rattled off 40 unanswered points to cruise towards the quarter-finals.

The top eight teams for the Confraternity Shield included teams from Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gold Coast and two Brisbane teams – hosts Iona College and St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe which both qualified with two wins each.

In Division 2, Holy Spirit College, Mackay, St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane, St Michael’s College, Merrimac and All Souls St Gabriel’s School, Charters Towers were all unbeaten in their three matches.

In Division 3, Xavier Catholic College, Hervey Bay, Chanel College, Gladstone, and Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby, were undefeated.

Next year’s Confraternity Carnival is scheduled for Mackay. It will be the first time since 1996 that Mackay has hosted the Carnival.

All matches were livestreamed on www.confraternitycarnival.com.au.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay took a huge step towards the title that it once dominated when it stormed home to defeat rivals St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon in a gripping start to the 2021 Confraternity Carnival at Iona College today.

As “Confro” returned for the first time since 2019, St Patrick’s College overcame a 6-20 deficit in their Pool A clash with St Brendan’s, scoring 20 unanswered points to win 26-20 to wrap up a day of 57 pool matches.

There was plenty to take in across Iona’s fields on Brisbane’s bayside as 50 schools and more than 1230 players, mostly from Catholic schools, took part in the competition run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League.

The highlights of Day One of Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University, included:

• The historic first Confraternity Carnival girls’ competition, with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters, St Patrick’s College, Mackay, and The Cathedral College, Rockhampton unbeaten in their opening two pool matches.
• Home school Iona College winning both its pool matches including an impressive win over former champions St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.
• The ominous form of defending champions Ignatius Park College, Townsville, and their 2019 grand final opponents The Cathedral College, who cruised through their opening two pool matches.
• A long-awaited return to play after last year’s tournament was cancelled because of COVID.

The stage is set for an important run of final pool matches tomorrow morning that will determine the line-up for the quarter-finals in the afternoon ahead of Wednesday’s rest day.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay coach Michael Comerford said his players knew that they could set up their best possible quarter-final draw in the Confraternity Shield if they could topple St Brendan’s College, which came to Iona with genuine finals hopes.

Both teams are royalty in the decorated 40-year history of Confro, sharing 21 titles between them.

But St Patrick’s College Mackay – the school of the likes of Daly Cherry-Evans, Wendell Sailor and Grant Rovelli – has not won a Confraternity Shield since 2003. Rovelli was in the stands today to watch the team that he steered to victory 21 years ago.

Comerford, in his first year as coach, said his players were aware of the long run between Shield wins and had engaged its old boys with better memories of Confro success.

“We’ve tried to build those connections with our old boys because we know the pride that St Pat’s has in its Confro history,” Comerford said.

“We’re working with our players on what it means to wear the St Pat’s jersey because that’s important to us here.”

St Patrick’s had sounded a warning with its recent victory over state champions Kirwan State High School in the Aaron Payne Cup but that touch eluded them as St Brendan’s skipped to a 20-6 lead with a try early in the second half.

But St Patrick’s flexed its muscle with a stirring finish, relying on the likes of prop Ethan Cocco to build a fightback that has them in line to play Marist College, Ashgrove or St Augustine’s College, Cairns, in the quarter-finals. Cocco is one of the few frontline St Patrick’s players without a deal with an NRL team despite the excellent form that included his match winning try against Kirwan recently.

St Brendan’s must defeat Padua College tomorrow morning to book a quarter-final with Ignatius Park College, which did not concede a point today in wins over St Augustine’s Cairns (18-0) and Shalom College, Bundaberg (44-0).

The Cathedral College was just as impressive in its wins over St Mary’s, Toowoomba (26-6) and Aquinas College, Ashmore (46-6) to roll towards the quarter-finals.

Marymount College, Burleigh Waters, booked another quarter-final appearance with wins over St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe (20-14) and St Peter Claver College (32-4).

But the biggest roars of the day were for the home team as Iona College, fresh from a rugby union season, defeated Aquinas College (32-12) before landing the knockout blow on 2018 champions St Mary’s, Toowoomba (18-6). The result left Johnathan Thurston’s former school without a win in a tournament in which they were expected to challenge for the grand final.

In Division 2, Holy Spirit College, Mackay, St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane, St Michael’s College, Merrimac and All Souls St Gabriels School, Charters Towers, all won their two pool matches to take an advantage into Day 2.

In Division 3, Ryan Catholic College, Townsville, Xavier Catholic College, Hervey Bay, Chanel College, Gladstone, and Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby, were undefeated.

<img decoding="async" class="inline-image__image o-shadowed-box aligncenter" src="https://www.qrl.com.au/contentassets/3e7ecee3e75a4e649232135f3a28a5b9/confro-day-1-girls.png?center=0.19%2C0.55&preset=photo-inline" alt="For the first time, a girls division was played at the carnival.
The girls took centre stage in the morning as nine schools contested the inaugural girls’ competition after efforts to bring them in last year were ruined by COVID.

Marymount College matched the feats of its boys’ team with an undefeated run today off the back of its promising play in the Titans Cup on the Gold Coast. The girls’ competition continues with two pool matches for each team tomorrow to determine the order for Thursday’s finals matches.

The boys’ carnival is contested in three divisions of 16 teams. Each team plays two matches of 20-minute halves on the opening two days.
