Mariner magic conjures up Phil Hall Cup for Palm Beach Currumbin

Brisbane Broncos-bound centre Deine Mariner was the man of the moment in the NRL Schoolboy Cup Queensland final, playing a pivotal role in Palm Beach Currumbin’s 62-0 Phil Hall Cup domination.

Against St Brendan’s College at Moreton Daily Stadium, the point-scoring specialist was the lynchpin in the Gold Coast-based school’s right-side reign, playing a part in six tries.

Mariner crossed for three of his own and assisted in another three four-pointers to avenge last year’s heartbreaking loss in the big dance to Kirwan State High School.

“It feels good. Our team… we set this as a goal, particularly after last year,” Mariner said post-match, describing the feeling of winning the NRL Schoolboy Cup Queensland title.

“I’m really proud of the boys’ efforts today and getting the ‘W’ really means a lot.

“It has been a good year… it’s been pretty successful and I’m keen to see what’s in-store for the future.”

It only took three minutes for the victors to get on the board when Jett Forbes latched onto an intercept and ran 70 metres to get down the other end of the field before being pulled down by St Brendan’s defenders… but the desperation defence was in vain two plays later when Oscar Bryant found Keano Kini loitering near the line to bring up Palm Beach’s first.

The opening two tries of Mariner’s first half hat-trick came during the next 10 minutes as he crossed twice to accelerate the lead to 16-0.

The Broncos dynamo then played a hand in Forbes’ first of his four-try haul before scooping up a well-executed Tom Weaver grubber to seal his hat-trick in only the 25th minute.

At half-time, Palm Beach were well in control at 30-0 and whilst not discrediting the effort shown by the Scott Minto-coached St Brendan’s side to try and stop the onslaught, they were not ready to put the cue in the rack.

Coming out from the sheds after the break energised to claim victory in style, the South East Queensland juggernauts went on a point-scoring frenzy with four different names troubling the defence in the space of 15 minutes – Bryant, Michael Roberts, Kini for his double and Ryan Foran all finding the white chalk before the 45th minute.

With the game well and truly gone at 48-0, Mariner linked up with Forbes to allow the winger to cross twice more and Roberts added the icing on the cake right on full-time with an impressive four-pointer to send the Phil Hall Cup to the front offices of Palm Beach Currumbin – a feat that hasn’t been achieved since 2018 when Tom Dearden and Toby Sexton starred in the halves.

Reflecting on the win, ex-Palm Beach Currumbin student and current coach Tim Maccan said it was a proud moment to be NRL Schoolboy Cup state champions.

“To coach this team is a real privilege and a real honour,” Maccan said.

“To be an ex-student and to win a state final, myself, I know what the boys have been through and what they’re doing, so it was great to win one as a player but to win one as a coach is extra special.”

Attributing the success of the right edge to the game plan set down, Maccan also emphasised the role his forward pack played in laying the platforms.

“We planned to get some quality ball to the right side. We’ve got some strike weapons out there in Deine Mariner and Michael Roberts moving there so we knew had to get some quality ball and some good position and we knew we’d get some rewards there,” Maccan said.

“But the forwards made a bit of a pact they wanted to hold the score to zero and they wanted to make sure they led from the front, hold the middle tight and let all the backs get all the glory.

“I thought our three starting middles were great today.”

With a large percentage of the Reds side also members of the Tweed Seagulls’ outfit that claimed the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup title earlier this year, including Maccan, the dual title-winning coach said he could not be more proud of the achievement this year and it proved the systems in place for club and school football were working.

“It’s great. It’s a big team effort with the boys we’ve got. A lot of them are from Tweed and the coaching staff is the same,” the Palm Beach Currumbin coach said.

“I’ve got great coaching staff and great players here and it just shows the systems were are using work and are successful and we’ll keep doing it.”

With COVID-19 forcing the cancellation of the New South Wales NRL Schoolboy Cup competition, Palm Beach Currumbin’s journey ends as Queensland winners the national final cancelled due to the current situation.

In the earlier matches, St Augustine’s clinched victory from the jaws of defeat with a 20-18 come-from-behind win over Lockyer District in the NRL Schoolboy Trophy; meanwhile, Keebra Park were too strong for Kirwan State High School to claim the Karyn Murphy Cup 24-8.

NRL Schoolboys Cup: Who were the best 15 players from grand final day after wins by Redcliffe SHS, Caloundra SHS and PBC SHS? Also, relive Michael Roberts’ match-winning try.

The NRL Schoolboys Cup, Gee Cup and De Vere Cup grand finals were decided yesterday, with Palm Beach Currumbin, Redcliffe SHS and Caloundra SHS coming out on top.

In a sensational NRL Schoolboys Cup decider, PBC SHS five-eight Michael Roberts ran 80m to score four minutes from fulltime to break an 18-all deadlock.

PBC SHS’s win means they will now play the winner of the northern conference, St Brendan’s College Yeppoon, who also won a last-gasp thriller of Kirwan SHS in yesterday’s Payne Cup grand final.

That match will be played on September 15, and will again be livestreamed by News Corp around the state, including www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and through the Rockhampton region.

MICHAEL ROBERTS (PBC SHS)

Moving Roberts closer to the action from wing to five-eight proved a masterstroke of coach PBC SHS coach Tim Maccan.

Not only did the year 11 student scoop up stolen ball and run 80m to score the match-winning try – relive that try here – he also scored a smart individual try and put his winger Jett Forbes over for a try as well.

CASSUIS COWLEY (MARSDEN SHS)

Cowley rose to the occasion on the big stage to almost get his team over the line.

Before the match Wavell SHS coach Michael Roberts said the game could come down to which No.7 had the biggest say on proceedings.

PBC SHS’s Tom Weaver was a 7 out 10 performer yesterday, but Cowley was an 8 out of 10 and full marks to him.

RYAN FORAN (PBC SHS)

In all the excitement of Roberts’ match-winning dash – and overall performance – Foran’s effort may be lost a little. But we will make sure here it is remembered for a long time.

Foran was arguably the player of the game, certainly the best forward on the park.

He finished with two tries, but he made run after run after run down that left side. His effort on effort is what got PBC SHS back level-pegging.

LANCE FUALEMA (MARSDEN SHS)

The big prop had a sensational opening burst to the match where he was the best front rower on the field – and that is saying something.

Like Cowley and Tyree Bowman (Marsden SHS), he came to the party on the big day, building on excellent semi-final form to lead the way on grand final day.

KEANO KINI (PBC SHS)

The boy wonder from New Zealand was highly influential in getting his team going from a 12-nil deficit.

Yes he had the advantage of playing for 10 minutes against a 12 man defensive line, but he also impacted against 13 men as well, don’t worry.

This kid who can ball play in the front line while also attacking from fullback is the real deal and watching him in 2022 will be a highlight.

TYREE BOWMAN (Marsden SHS)

The Marsden SHS scored for the second successive week, but that was merely icing on the cake as he saved his best performance of 2021 for grand final day.

He also made a break six minutes from fulltime, but the PBC SHS cover defence scrambled so he could not put his support away for a match-winning try. His long time teammate Teapo Stoltman also finished his outstanding season with a fine effort.

TOM WEAVER – and OSKAR BRYANT (PBC SHS)

Weaver was an outstanding puppeteer and Bryant still a force despite Marsden SHS clearing working hard to nullify his impact.

JACK CAMERON (Redcliffe SHS)

Cameron was formally presented with the man of the match award by Broncos’ great Matt Gillett for his effort in his team’s Gee Cup winning effort.

He is a very impressive dummy half who brings his pack onto the ball, knows when to run himself and tackles like Andrew McCullough.

JACOB TAULANI (Redcliffe SHS)

The big striding, power edge backrower has that sprinkle of x-factor about him. He benefits from the go forward of his middles like Matt Bennett and Sefo Faatuono and Kiahl Moore, but he does reward those hard working tight forwards by threatening defensive lines.

Cameron deservedly won the man of the match but hats off to Major, Moore, Bennett and Faatuono.

Redcliffe lost only one match this season because they had an outstanding pack what would have challenged Langer Trophy squads had the side qualified.

TULLY MCLELLAN (Caloundra SHS)

Behind a pack marching forward, McLellan produced a mini-master close. A Sunshine Coast Falcons product who is on the radar of the Melbourne Storm, the kid was worth the hype. And behind a winning pack, fullback Brooklenn Mundraby-Grogan looked a bit special.

HAYDEN GALLAGHER

We loved his effort, his enthusiasm, his fight in the tackle and his never say die attitude.

He was surrounded by outstanding teammates – including Chase Patterson and Brodie Halpin – but it was great to see someone like Gallagher do what he did on grand final day.

One senses he probably plays each match he encounters with similar gusto, but this was our first view of him and he should be proud of his efforts.

WHAT THE COACHES SAID

Tim Maccan (PBC SHS)

“That was a really tough game. We are busted. We lost two players during the game and that was just a dead set battering. They threw everything at us.

“We had to withstand all that.

“Ryan was the form backrower of the competition and warranted selection in the Australian schoolboys side.

“He is someone that if you want to go to war, he is the first you pick.

“Michael (Roberts), there is not much he can’t do. His big thing is learning when to turn it on, and when to be patient. And we are working on that.

“Kini did a good job reducing the amount of time he had with the footy, but he still had some really strong carries and did some really good things.

“Our team, this group of boys have a want to win, to turn up and be there for their mates.’’

“I would like to congratulate PBC SHS on their win.

“It is always hard to put into words the feelings that are associated with a game like that, but I was so proud of my Marsden team,’’ Hartigan said. “They showed amazing qualities across the 60 minutes.

“We had our chances to ice the game and no doubt we have learnt some invaluable lessons that they will take on their journey.

“I am proud to be a Mako and I can’t wait to continue to follow the next chapter that awaits out year 12 boys.

Scott Murray (Redcliffe SHS)

“We lost that one game to qualify for the Langer, and it was hard to get them back focused.

But to their credit we just said lets go again and winning the Gee Shield was important to us.

“We will get half half back (in 2022 chasing a Langer Trophy berth) which is probably ideal.

“They would have got a lot of experience out of today.’’

“I could not be prouder.

“Off the field they are outstanding and all they wanted to do was work together to get the result.

“There are no egos in this side. Everyone has a role to play and they turn up and do it.

“Everyone will make a mistake or go away from the game plan, but it is not about getting into them, it is about getting behind and saying ‘okay, you saw something and you backed themselves’ and that is always one of my last messages and they do back themselves and their ability.’’

Palm Beach Currumbin came from behind to beat Marsden in the grand final of the NRL Schoolboys Cup at Kougari Oval on Wednesday. WATCH ALL THE DAY’S REPLAYS!

REPLAY: South Queensland Rugby League Grand Final – Marsden SHS vs Palm Beach Currumbin

A triple treat of schoolboy grand final action was livestreamed this afternoon by News Corp as part of a feast of schoolboy finals this month.

Wednesday’s action included the NRL Schoolboys Cup decider between Langer Trophy champions Marsden SHS and the most successful south east Queensland in recent years – Palm Beach Currumbin SHS. PBC came from behind to win 22-18 (see below).

In the earlier games at Kougari Oval, Gee Cup action saw Redcliffe SHS beat Clairvaux MacKillop College, while in the De Vere Cup Caloundra SHS were too good for Mabel Park SHS.

THE MATCHES

NRL SCHOOLBOYS SOUTHERN CONFERENCE: MARSDEN SHS v PBC SHS

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS five-eighth Michael Roberts scored a sensational 80m solo try four minutes from fulltime to hand his side the NRL Schoolboys Cup premiership over Marsden SHS.

Roberts, the brother of NRL speed demon James Roberts, snared stolen ball and ran for his life, finding the energy to palm off a Marsden defender and score the try of his young life. PBC won 22-18.

“I was hoping he was going to be able to get there. I saw Leon (Marsden fullback Leon Te Hau) and a few chasers, but I forgot he (Roberts) had that sick left hand fend and he got rid of him,’’ said PBC SHS captain Tom Weaver.

“When he scored it was an awesome feeling.’’

The man of the moment, Roberts added: “I just picked it up and it (a gap) opened up and I just ran. I was going to pass it but just backed myself and ran the field.’’

It was remarkable as the perennial south east champions Palm Beach Currumbin SHS climbed off the canvas to win over a Marsden side full of character.

With left edge forward warrior Ryan Foran at the peak of his powers when his team needed him most, PBC SHS recovered from 12-nil and 18-8 deficits to find their way to the winners post – again.

Foran scored two close to the line tries down the left side, the second of which raised his team to 18-all.

In a dramatic finish

Then came Roberts match winning run four minutes from the end, raising his team to the lead for the first time in the game.

Even then Marsden had one play after the fulltime siren, but PBC SHS survived.

Earlier Roberts scored a try and produced a try assist against a Marsden SHS side that played their hearts out.

“That was a really tough game,’’ said PBC coach Tim Maccan. “We are busted. We lost two players during the game and that was just a dead set battering. They threw everything at us.’’

Marsden SHS coach Matt Hartigan praised his team’s character and said they should be proud of their efforts, while also congratulating PBC SHS.

“We had our chances to ice the game and no doube we have learnt some invaluable lessons that they will take on their journey.’’

With Marsden SHS halfback Cassius Cowley rising to the occasion, Marsden SHS extended its lead seven minutes into the second half by 16-8 after a set play try which saw centre Teapo Stoltman use his pace cutting back on the inside off Cowley.

But PBC SHS were back in business when Foran scored the first of his two tries, and then another 14 minutes from fulltime.

It was a see-sawing match which saw Marsden led 12-nil and 18-8 before PBC closed in, with Foran brute force left edge running causing trouble.

Leading up to halftime Palm Beach Currumbin SHS fullback Kini Keano and five-eight Roberts lit up Kougari Oval with some dynamic play to spark their team from a 12-nil deficit.

Against a 12 man defensive line following an earlier sin-binning, Roberts scored one try and put his winger Jett Forbes over for another to bring the score to 12-8 at halftime.

It was a half of two halves.

Marsden had all the running in the first part of the game, and in the second – and not helped with Mou Taumaletila being in the sin-bin – PBC SHS dominated the period leading to halftime.

Keano was brilliant against a 13-man defensive line, and even more dangerous against 12 defenders as halfback Weaver enjoyed front football ball courtesy of his pack.

PBC SHS, clearly attacking Marsden’s middle with inside passes, had some success in gathering momentum, and off that momentum Weaver’s running players Keano and Roberts were dangerous.

Earlier, Marsden SHS drew first blood through dummy half Bowman who, for the second final in succession, dived over from dummy half.

Prop Xavier Stowers had run a decoy for his fellow front rower Lance Fualema, but his quick play the ball when tackled enabled Bowman to plunge over unopposed.

Marsden gained further momentum when Cowley got through the front line and won a penalty for his side after skip Chris Faagutu had got his team onto the front foot.

From the new set of six big Fualema, denied a few minutes earlier, scored and it was 12-niL.

When PBC SHS ventured inside Marsden’s quarter line, Faagutu put his shoulder to the grindstone to put a big tackle on PBC SHS’s Bailey Martin.

Marsden SHS Cowley was up for the big dance, playing straight, offering passes either side of him and kicking with precision.

DE VERE CUP: MABEL PARK SHS v CALOUNDRA SHS

Caloundra SHS’s open program looks in safe hands after its year 10 De Vere Cup side won its grand final over Mabel Park SHS today.

Playing with speed and skill, Caloundra’s quick, mobile pack started at a gallop and never lost stride, winning 36-4.

Mabel Park defended stoutly into the second half, but a show and go by Caloundra halfback Tully McLellan got Caloundra on the board again and it was 30-nil.

Caloundra SHS could not have started better.

They led 12-nil and then 18-nil when No.7 McLellan showed a clean par of heels running down the right hand sideline.

And it was 22-nil when McLellan ball-played beautifully at the line, taking a hit but getting a pass away to a rampaging Brodie Halpin whose long stride carried him 30m to score.

Off the back of quick play the balls, Caloundra rolled forward at pace, with an uptempo game unsettling the Mabel Park SHS defence early.

Caloundra SHS lock Hayden Gallagher was the picture of determination when he twisted and turned and plunged over to score the opening try next to the posts.

Next the explosive speed of fullback Brooklenn Mundraby-Grogan was on show when he finished a wide, right hand raid, handing Caloundra a 12-nil lead.

GEE SHIELD: REDCLIFFE SHS v CLAIRVAUX MACKILLOP COLLEGE

The best side all season, Redcliffe SHS, deservedly finished with the silverware at Kougari Oval today.

Redcliffe beat Clairvaux MacKillop College 46-nil, roaring out of the blocks to lead 26-nil before going on with the job.

Reddy have only lost one match all season – the Langer Trophy qualifying final –

but there was no way they were going to lose today’s decider.

Props Sefo Faatuono and Matt Bennett laid early platforms, while edge backrower Jacob Taulani scored a magnificent grand final try.

Hooker Jack Cameron delivered slick passing off the back of quick play the balls, while out wide centre Tom Lunney and Dan Dawes enjoyed first half tries.

The Redclfife forwards were big and mobile, with Braith Major, Kiahl Moore and Taulani punching out the metres while also being line breaking threats.

Earlier, the two Redcliffe props combined beautifully to open the scoring in the Gee Cup grand final, with Sefo unloading to Bennett who stormed over beneath the posts after six minutes.

It was 10-nil not long after when five-eight Blake Kehl threw a lovely long ball to his winger Dan Dawes who scurried over in the corner.

In between Clairvaux winger James Richardson threatened with a sideline run, but Kehl in cover and Redcliffe fullback Tyler Fishlock were up to the task in defence.
