Cronulla Sharks 2023 Female Pathways Presentation Night

Ahead of the start of the NRLW season next month, the Sharks celebrated the recently completed Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership (HNWP) and Tarsha Gale Cup seasons with their 2023 Women’s presentation event held at Sharks at Kareela last night.

Awards were presented to the best performers in each of the Sharks pathways teams, with first year Tarsha Gale lock Stephanie Faulkner taking away the major prize as the Sharks 2023 Female Pathways Player of the Year.

In other awards on the night, middle forward Ellie Johnston was the HNWP Players Player.

Hooker Quincy Dodd the recipient of the Coaches Award, while hooker/lock Bianca Cutrupi was the Tarsha Players Player and Faulkner the Tarsha Gale Coaches Award winner.

Ruan Sims was coach of a Harvey Norman Sharks team which showed glimpses of their potential in finishing seventh position after a four-win, six loss season.

While the Tarsha Sharks, coached by Neil Stanley, unearthed a number of talented prospects during a campaign highlighted by a gritty 10-4 win over semifinalists the Illawarra Steelers in their last round match.

As for the award winners, Johnston and Dodd were both members of the NSW squad during the recent two-game Women’s Origin series and have now turned their attention to the upcoming NRLW season.

Cutrupi continues her development with the Como team in the Women’s under 18’s.

Also recognised on the night was a long list of women to earn representative honours in 2023, while 21 players will move onto the NRLW later this year, 15 who are set to play for the Sharks in their first season in the NRL’s elite level women’s competition.

Sharks women continue their winning ways

Cronulla Sharks Tarsha Gale Cup team (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The Shark’s Women’s teams secured impressive back-to-back wins in their Round 6 matches on Saturday.

Tarsha Gale overcoming the Parramatta Eels 22-16 and the Harvey Norman Women’s side defeating the Wentworthville Magpies 36-10 in their biggest win of the season so far.

Tarsha Gale conceded early points in their clash against Parramatta Eels at New Era Stadium, however were able to strike back with two consecutive tries through Katalina Vavahea Faith Veikoso and Alena Pale Eli.

Another try from Parramatta saw the teams go into halftime with the score locked up.

Despite the Eels crossing the line first in the second half, the Sharks were able to get the job done converting two late tries in the final minutes to seal the game.

Despite a slow start, Tarsha Gale coach Neil Stanley praised the team’s ability to come from behind and walk away with the two competition points.

“We let them in for pretty easy tries.

The first set off the kick, we let them waltz out of yardage with back-to-back penalties.

You’re always going to be on the back foot when that is happening but after that, we rolled our sleeves back up and put in the work,” Stanley said.

“There are still some little areas in our game that we can fix, where we put ourselves under a little bit of pressure.

But I’m really happy with the desperation and effort on effort the girls are showing week in and week out.”

The Harvey Norman Women’s team dominated their game against Wentworthville Magpies, securing their third win of the season.

A hat-trick from winger Zali Fay put Cronulla in front early, before hooker Quincy Dodd, dived over the line late in the first half, seeing the team enter halftime up 20-0.

The opposition was next to score, and despite giving up another try late in the game, Sharks confidently held on for the win with Andie Robinson, Chloe Saunders and Brooke Anderson crossing in the second half.

The Shark’s Tarsha Gale side will travel to Australia’s Capital this Saturday where they will go head-to-head against the Canberra Raiders.

The Harvey Norman Women’s Team will take on the Mounties under lights next Monday night at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence.

Sharks girls slips to round three losses

Cronulla Sharks Tarsha Gale Cup (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

One team was playing their first game on home soil in 2023, while the other was in action at Henson Park.

The venues were different the results were unfortunately the same, with the two Sharks women’s teams suffering losses in their round three matches.

The Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Sharks battled hard throughout but couldn’t quite get over the hump in going down by 14-12 to the Central Coast Roosters.

Sharks Tarsha Gale match up it was a red-hot Roosters Indigenous Academy team which proved too good in beating a brave Sharks outfit by 34-4.

Ungah Academy 2023 Every Monday – Ages 4 – 13

Played in sweltering conditions the Indigenous Academy were on the board early, before building on their advantage to lead 14-4 at the half time break.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, however despite the loss, coach Neil Stanley was satisfied with the commitment shown by his team.

“There was a lot of effort, out there, I’m really proud in parts, but it’s about how we bring that together, connect it,” Stanley said.

“In patches our work rate is really good but it’s about how we put that into a solid team effort.

“We knew Roosters weren’t going to be an easy one and that we’d have to play for 60 minutes.

We lapsed there in a couple of moments but I dare say we’ll be better for it and roll out stronger next week.

“For 60 per cent of the squad it’s the first time, its new for them at playing this competition level.

To understand what it takes. The scoreline is a bit of blow out, but there were definitely some positives to look at,” Stanley added.

The Sharks try scorer was Zoe Topham, her four-pointer coming in the 13th minute of the first half.

Tarsha Sharks on three competition points following a draw with the Bears last weekend and a round one bye.

Across town at the Sharks Academy Field at Cronulla High School, the HNWP Sharks were engaged in an intense battle with the Central Coast Roosters in the hot and steamy conditions.

A first half try to centre Andie Robinson and conversion by Maddie Studdon saw the Sharks lead 6-4 at the break.

However a try to their opponents soon after the resumption of play, then another inside the final 10 minutes, gave the Roosters the buffer they needed as they hung for the win.

The Sharks scored late through backrower Tayla Curtis but time ran out on the Cronulla team who slipped to a second consecutive loss following a round one win.

The HNWP will try to turn around their fortunes when they play the Bulldogs in round four at PointsBet Stadium, while the Tarsha Sharks tackle the Dragons, with both games to played next Sunday.

Bears too strong for HNWP Sharks

After giving up two tries in the opening five minutes of the match the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Sharks have slipped to a 22-10 defeat to North Sydney in their round two clash.

The two four-pointers, both scored by Bears winger Jakiya Whitfield helped the home team to establish an early advantage and as hard as the Sharks tried in the hot and steamy conditions, they were never able to bridge the gap.

“We can’t let teams get off to a start like that,” Sims said. “It was a tough game, hard conditions for both sides.

“We just missed the jump, missed the start, the girls did really well to get themselves back into position but in the end those two early tries were the difference.

I was really proud of the girls to be able to pull it back and we know what it is we can work on before next week.”

Following the two four-pointers, in the first and fourth minutes of the match, the Sharks backs were to the wall in a game where temperatures reached the high 30’s at the Hills Grammar School fields at Kenthurst.

The Sharks responded, centre Ella Barker making it 8-4 to the Bears following an 11th minute try, before the North Sydney side was able to cross the line twice before the break in taking an 18-4 lead to half time.

Backrower Tayla Curtis scored, the try converted by Maddie Studdon gave the Sharks some hope of a comeback victory at 18-10 with still plenty of time left on the clock.

The Bears would confirm the win with a final touchdown just two minutes from fulltime.

“They have a big strong middle pack, it’s a representative pack and we knew that’s where their strength was going to be, they just rolled us to start the game,” Sims said in summing up.

Following a week one win over the Tigers the Sharks now have a win and a loss heading into round three where they play the Roosters at PointsBet Stadium in what will be their first home game of the season.

First up win for Sharks Women

Cronulla Sharks HNWP got their Grand Final revenge in Round 1 (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Sharks have kicked off their 2023 campaign in the best possible fashion by beating defending premiers the Wests Tigers in a round one clash.

The Sharks rebounded from a slow start to beat the Tigers 30-18 in hot and steamy conditions at Campbelltown Stadium, in what was some sort of revenge for their overtime Grand Finals loss to the same opponent last year.

Ungah Academy 2023

We want to try to be more resilient

“We want to try to be more resilient. I know it’s a word that gets thrown around but we want to try to live that word,” Sims said.

“If you get yourself into strife you need to try to get yourself out of it. We did that as a unit today, which was pleasing.

“We kept pushing through until the end. We had moments where we switched off a few times but were able to pull that back.”

Falling behind 12-0 early, as Sims explained the Sharks were forced to respond, which they were able to do, first half tries to Tayla Curtis and Brandi Davis Welsh seeing the teams go to the break with the Tigers at 12-10 in front.

Another Tigers try in the opening moments of the second period gave them an eight-point advantage, but from there it was all the Sharks, who dominated the final 25 minutes of the match to come away with an impressive win.

Sims downplayed her influence in getting her team up for the second half of the match, but whatever the message was it had the desired effect.

“I just said I wanted to see some better completions.

We’d only completed two, three sets of six in that first half and you just can’t do that in a game of footy,” Sims explained.

“(I said) you need to do better in that aspect and I wanted to see a bit of control in the ruck. We were letting them run through our middles too much.

I challenged our middle forwards and I think they answered that in the second half.”

For the Sharks winger Ella Barker crossed twice, with Brandi Davis Welsh, Monique Donovan, and Rhiannon Byers also scoring second half tries, while experienced campaigner Maddie Studdon kicked three goals.

Obviously satisfied with the result, Sims was also pleased with the contributions made by a couple of newcomers and previously unheralded players on her Sharks team.

“We unearthed a couple of new talents, a couple of those girls scored and had good first up appearances,” she said.

“Tayla Curtis was really strong, Rhiannon Byers was really strong as well and Cassie Staples in her first appearance at the back was good for us.

“There is plenty of learning still to do, but also plenty to take out of that game,” Sims added.

The Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Sharks play the St George Dragons at Kogarah Jubilee Oval next Saturday in a round two match. That game is scheduled to kick off at 2.30pm.

Weststigers Women’s team begins title defence

Author : Wests Tigers

Wests Tigers premiership-winning Harvey Norman Women’s team has been named for this weekend’s season-opener, as the team begins its quest to go back-to-back.

Weststigers Harvey Norman Women’s team at St Gregory’s College Campbelltown

And what better way to get the ball rolling than a Grand Final rematch against Cronulla Sharks at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Yep, the same team, at the same venue, where a triumphant Wests Tigers team claimed its maiden title in the NSW Women’s Premiership.

Oh what a feeling: Wests Tigers crowned 2022 HNW champions at Campbelltown

The nucleus of that team remains, mixed with a handful of new additions, including a gold-medal-winning Australian Bobsledder, Ashleigh Werner.

Ashleigh Werner in pre-season training

Werner missed out on Olympic Bobsleigh qualification last year due to a bout of Covid and is eager to make her Wests Tigers debut.

I feel so incredibly honoured to be stepping onto the field for Wests Tigers.

Ashleigh Werner

Also pulling on Wests Tigers colours for the first time is second-rower, Ruby Jean Kennard.

Head coach Adel Hage says the introduction of an NRLW team for Wests Tigers this season presents new challenges for his squad.

Missing from the Round 1 line-up is captain Emily Curtain and Botille Vette-Welsh, who are both returning from knee injuries.

“With the NRLW later in the season, we’ve got to keep a closer watch on player workloads, and that’s the case with Emily and Botille,” said Hage.

It’s a lengthy season with the NSW Women’s Premiership followed on by the NRLW, and we’re mindful of that.

Adel Hage

Two competitions in the one year also provides added opportunities for Wests Tigers women.

“This season, as opposed to last season, many of our players will be playing for NRLW contracts, so that’s exciting,” added Hage.

“It’s great that we have the core of last year’s squad on deck for the new campaign, with a few new faces as well.”

Hage is keen to build on the style of play which guided the team to grand final glory last season.

We want to encourage a style of footy that is expansive and entertaining.

Adel Hage

“I know our NRL squad has been preparing with an attacking mindset, and we will see that flowing through the women’s teams as well.”

Sims and Young take on new roles

Decorated Sky Blues players Ruan Sims and Rebecca Young are putting those years of playing experience into their new coaching careers in 2023.

Sims is no stranger to the clipboard and whistle. She coached the 2022 NSW Country Women’s team to a 14-6 win over City in May and then was assistant to Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder in their 20-16 Origin win over Queensland in June.

In 2023 she will be head coach of the Cronulla Sharks in the NSWRL’s Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership, and assistant coach to the NRLW side making its debut this year in a 10-team competition.

Young, who like Sims is a former Jillaroo, is also stretching her Rugby League talent into the coaching sphere and has been named an assistant for the NRL Indigenous All Stars women’s team.

Young will work with head coach Ben Jeffries for the game in Rotorua on Saturday 11 February – the first time the annual men’s and women’s event against the Maori All Stars has been held in New Zealand.

For Sims, she is already enjoying the cross-pollination with True Blue Craig Fitzgibbon – the Sharks NRL head coach.

“Absolutely. I get a lot more out of if than he does, that’s for sure,” Sims told nswrl.com.au

“He’s been incredibly open and accommodating. From the get-go any training sessions or meetings I’d like to attend, Craig is happy for me to be there.

“It’s great for me to observe and learn off Craig, who in turn worked under Brad Fittler and Trent Robinson as part of their success in Origins and Grand Finals.

“He himself was a rookie NRL coach in 2022 and had such a good year (Sharks finished second on the ladder) so it’s too good an opportunity to pass up as he’s so receptive.”

Sims’ CV is equally impressive as a pioneer of the women’s game – a dual international who represented Australia in rugby union and Rugby League – and the first female player to sign a professional player contract in 2016.

Play something unreal – register for club tackle or Tag in NSW

“There’s a real buzz about the Shire regarding the women’s program,” Sims said.

“It kicked off in Cronulla in 2016 and then the NRLW started in 2018. There was a fair bit of disappointment when the Sharks didn’t get a team into that first year,” she said.

“But now we have and the support locally has been absolutely massive. That’s been a driving force for the club.”

The chance to continue the improvement of the women’s game motivates Sims.

“I have always really enjoyed the feeling I got from helping players develop their skills and find even more enjoyment in the game,” she said.

“There’s always challenges and opportunities that come along and these (Sharks appointments) are ones I didn’t think I would get but I’m relishing definitely – it’s an exciting time, very exciting.”

Sims will be a busy woman alongside her work with ABC Grandstand and the Nine Network’s programs and NRL coverage. That’s on top of her regular job with the NSW Fire Brigade.

“There’s an Excel spread sheet that keeps my life running on track,” Sims joked.

“The thing is, that if you love what you do it doesn’t seem like work. I’m really fortunate that all the careers I do have, I really enjoy them.”

Sims was recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to Rugby League in 2021.

Tony Herman appointed NRLW coach for inaugural season

The Cronulla Sharks are delighted to announce that Tony Herman will coach the club’s NRLW team for its inaugural season in 2023.

A long history with the Cronulla club, most recently the head coach of the Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team for the past two seasons, narrowly beaten in the 2022 Grand Final.

Herman has played his part in driving equality and opening up greater opportunities for female rugby league players in the Sutherland Shire.

“I am extremely humbled to be the Inaugural Cronulla Sharks NRLW Coach.

It is an honour to Coach at this Great Club and in the Women’s space that I am so passionate about is very special,” said Herman.

“The excitement around the Club that we now have an NRLW team is extraordinary.

This year we ran 14s and 17s development teams and attracted around 30-40 girls in each with the plan to run 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s this coming season.

The growth of the women’s game is phenomenal in the Shire and to be given the opportunity to play my part in that is very exciting.”

Having worked in both the male and female space, Herman is no stranger to taking on an inaugural side.

Tony was the first coach of the Cronulla Sharks National Youth Competition, before moving on to coach the Sharks NSW Cup side, winning a Premiership in 2013.

Having coached the female Cronulla Sharks Touch Football Junior State Cup side over four years.

The female Cronulla JRL League Tag competition over four years, as well as stints in the male representative arena coaching the NSW U16s and an assistant coach of the Junior Kangaroos.

Tony’s wealth of knowledge and exposure will provide the perfect platform for the Sharks NRLW side to not only build from but hit the ground running in 2023.

Sharks CEO Dino Mezzatesta says Herman thoroughly deserves to be at the helm as the club enters a new era in the women’s space.

“Tony has shown a commitment to the women’s game here at Cronulla, and a genuine passion for nurturing and growing our women’s game,” said Mezztesta.

“We are thrilled that he will lead the Sharks into its inaugural NRLW season.”

The 2023 NRLW season will kick off in July.
