QRL COVID-19 vaccine update

Statement: COVID-19 vaccine update

Queensland Rugby League has today distributed current Queensland Government advice on vaccinations for community and statewide competitions across the state.

The information communicated to stakeholders provided a summary based on current Queensland Government advice and should only be used to support club decision-making.

Future updates on this matter will reference two key guiding principles:

Government and health advice

The most recent advice from the Queensland Government is

There is no requirement for persons to be vaccinated to attend community sport participation spaces.

This is inclusive of spectators, participants, employees and volunteers.

From today, December 17, there will be a requirement for individuals attending hospitality venues (including licensed leagues / sporting clubs) to be vaccinated.

For example, if a rugby league club has both

Sporting facilities and restaurant / bar facilities, unvaccinated people can only access the sporting or exercise facilities. They are not permitted to enter the clubhouse / hospitality facilities.

This is not inclusive of ‘takeaway’ canteens or can bars.

Key stakeholder requirement

Further to the above, there may be additional vaccination requirements from key stakeholder groups that support the delivery of rugby league.

These may include but are not limited to:

Land or building owners imposing the requirement for visitors to be vaccinated prior to entering facilities or venues
Service providers requiring individuals to be vaccinated prior to utilising a service.

For example, transport companies

Capacity limits at venues, noting the current direction confirming that events catering for 5000 or more people require all attendees above the age of 16 to be vaccinated.

The above update is consistent with the detailed advice provide by the Department of Sport and Recreation on Thursday, December 16.

QRL will continue to work with key stakeholders in the Department of Sport and Recreation and Queensland Health in relation to the ongoing response to COVID-19.

Return to Play update junior reps

Wests Tigers can provide the below update for its junior representative players, families, staff and officials as it eagerly awaits the return of the respective competitions in 2022.

The below has been distributed to all involved in those competitions in conjunction with NSWRL, with junior representative seasons scheduled to begin on February 5th, 2022.

When possible, the club will provide another relevant update, as well as any further relevant updates regarding plans for pre-season trials, training schedules and competitions as they become available.

Returning to Play

The NSW Government has announced its “Roadmap to Recovery” which provides details around the opening of state-based sport once we hit the 80% double-dose vaccination target.

Wests Tigers are keen to see the return of rugby league in a COVID-safe and compliant manner — especially for those who have missed footy over the past two seasons — and will continue to work with the advice given by the NRL, NSWRL and relevant Government departments on what the roadmap means for state-based rugby league.

Return to Play update junior reps

Current projections show that Greater Sydney will likely experience eased restrictions for those who are fully vaccinated as early as October 11 (after reaching the 70% double-dose vaccination target).

As an organisation, Wests Tigers will continue to seek health advice and await confirmation from the NSW Government on this and recommend that all involved in junior representative teams stay up-to-date with the easing of restrictions regarding exercising (and training) outdoors as well as access to gym facilities.

Wests Tigers support the advice of health authorities which is that anyone who is eligible for vaccination should get vaccinated without delay. It is clearly outlined in the NSW Government’s Roadmap to Recovery that those who are not fully vaccinated will not be able to have the same immediate freedoms as those who are fully vaccinated.

Whilst we await further advice from Government and relevant sporting bodies, Wests Tigers encourage all players and staff to get vaccinated as a means of protecting ourselves, our teammates and our families while also preparing for a return to play as quickly as possible.

The 2022 NSWRL junior representative season is scheduled to return on February 5 and Wests Tigers encourage those involved to do everything you can to prepare for that date.

This includes considering vaccination if you have not already, complying with health orders, ensuring that you check in at every venue you attend and ensuring that any venue you attend has a COVID safety plan (including gyms, training fields and other sporting facilities).

The NSWRL has been forced to make the difficult decision to cancel all of the remaining regional NSW competitions due to the latest Public Health Orders.

While the NSW Government has recently announced easing to some restrictions in various areas of NSW, the NSWRL has been advised that the Public Health Orders do not allow for organised or competitive community sport to recommence.

The present ambiguity relating to vaccination targets and related requirements for Community Sport was another key factor considered by NSWRL before confirming the cancellation.

“I thank all stakeholders for their tireless efforts in trying to get community football back on the field but unfortunately it is no longer feasible,” NSWRL Head of Football Robert Lowrie said.

“While COVID has thrown up many challenges to our sport, there are still plenty of achievements to be proud of with a strong participation base of 108,000 players leading into 2022.

“I thank all our participants, officials, coaches and fans for their contributions this season. I urge them to stay safe, observe the COVID-19 safety guidelines and look forward to seeing them back in action in 2022.”

A Junior Rugby League club on the far north coast of NSW that has used True Blues Cody Walker and Matt King, and NRL legend Preston Campbell, to teach participants the importance of inclusion has taken out the NSWRL Grassroots Club of the Year.

The Casino Cougars, who Walker and King both played for as juniors, were nominated for their work in bringing the Indigenous and non-Indigenous community together and for building a sense of unity and inclusivity for their players, families and supporters.

Casino Cougars President Adam Hickey said the players had taken a lot out of the visits of the NRL stars, both past and present.

“Cody took the Under 16s and Under 18s on training runs and spoke to the boys about the pressures and how he got to where he was and his achievements,” Hickey said.

“When Matt gets a chance, he comes up and we do the Matty King Shield where all the Casino kids get together at school carnivals.

“Preston sat down and spoke to the boys about the same thing as what Cody was talking about. Mindset, always being healthy, looking out for each other, just be a family at the end of the day.”

Hickey said he was humbled by the award and was quick to heap praise on all stakeholders who have contributed to the club’s success.

The club has seen an increase in their participation numbers this season, which is a great result considering the disruptions that have been caused due to COVID-19.

“Our numbers grew and have been growing for the last 10 years,” Hickey said.

“I think back in 2012 we only had 130 odd kids and now we’re at 340 so everything’s just exploded. Last year during COVID-19 we still had 250 kids registered and then we had another increase of 90 kids this year so we must be doing something right.

“Thank you to our community, and to all the coaches and trainers.

“Thank you to our local sponsors and especially the RSM Club for sticking with us for the last 45 years. That’s a big deal, without those guys we wouldn’t be where we’re at.”

The Grassroots Club of the Year Award is one of 18 Volunteer of the Year Awards the NSWRL issues every year to acknowledge the tireless work volunteers contribute to community football every season.

The NSWRL has already announced other Volunteer of the Year Award winners including the Inclusive Volunteer of the Year Award, the Indigenous Volunteer of the Year Award, Community Coach of the Year (Male), Community Coach of the Year (Female) and Regional Volunteers of the Year.

The Gordon Lowrie Memorial Award for the overall 2021 Volunteer of the Year will be announced next week.

The NSWRL has made the very difficult decision to abandon Group 3 Junior Rugby League for the rest of the 2021 season following the announcement by the NSW Government the lockdown for Regional NSW would be extended until 10 September to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.

The NSWRL made the decision in consultation with the Group’s Board of Directors after it was determined it would not be possible to recommence and finish the season in the remaining timeframe, particularly with no certainty understandably on when the NSW Government can ease lockdown restrictions.

The decision does not affect the senior competition in Group 3 which remains hopeful of finishing the season.

“We would like to thank all clubs, participants, officials and volunteers for their participation in what has been a fantastic 2021 season,” NSWRL Head of Football Robert Lowrie said.

“We have had a great season and have been very fortunate to get as much of the season in that we have. We also recognise the difficulty around ‘Return to Play’ protocols, field availability and players moving on to summer sports in early October.

“We appreciate the efforts and understanding of all stakeholders around this as it was not a decision that was taken lightly but one that had to be made with the uncertainty surrounding the situation with COVID-19 and any easing of restrictions.”

Group 3 enjoyed a successful season with record participation numbers of 2298 registered players across their 10 Junior League Clubs, which represented an increase of 11 per cent from the 2070 participants who signed up to play in the pre-COVID-19 season of 2019.

“We thank all stakeholders for their attempts to get Rugby League back on the field, urge everyone to stay safe and adhere to the COVID-19 safety guidelines, and we look forward to their return in 2022,” Lowrie said.

Calling all Rugby League fans; the NSWRL needs you!

Super Sport Sunday will see Rugby League go head-to-head with other codes on Sunday 29 August to encourage residents from the 12 Local Government Areas of concern get vaccinated to help the state get on top of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The NSWRL has assembled a team of legendary players, who forged their Rugby League careers in the respective LGA’s, to support the campaign including:

– NSW coach Brad Fittler (Penrith Panthers);
– NSWRL Chairman Dr George Peponis (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs);
– Blues advisor Greg Alexander (Penrith Panthers);
– Nathan Hindmarsh (Parramatta Eels);
– Andrew Ryan (Parramatta Eels; Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs);
– Steve Roach (Balmain Tigers);
– Paul Langmack (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs; Western Suburbs Magpies);
– Ben Elias (Balmain Tigers).

All you need to do is wear your you team uniform, colours, or gear and take a selfie to post on your local club website with the hashtag #vaccinationchampion and make sure you tag NSWRL.

“I am vaccinated and on behalf of NSWRL and NSW Health I’m urging all Rugby League players, volunteers, officials and supporters to go out this Sunday too and get the jab for Super Sport Sunday and help keep the northwest safe,” Hindmarsh said.

Ryan said: “I just want to let you all know I’m vaccinated and on behalf of NSWRL and NSW Health I’m urging all you players, officials, volunteers, supporters to get on board and also get vaccinated.

“Especially this Sunday, on Super Sport Sunday, I’m urging all you fans and people to get out there to protect the southwest. Let’s all work together to try and get each other back to work and back on the fields. Stay safe.”

There are plenty of appointments available at Qudos Bank Arena and the NSW Health Vaccination Centre at Sydney Olympic Park and the Vaccination Centre at Macquarie Fields this Sunday 29 August for all sports lovers.

Those aged 16 to 39 who live in Bayside, Blacktown, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool, Parramatta, Strathfield or Penrith, should make a booking here: nsw.gov.au/vacc16-39

The NSWRL has been proactive in encouraging vaccination shots with Fittler receiving his first jab two days after the Origin series finished, and True Blues Hindmarsh, Craig Wing and Steve Menzies sending messages of support.

The NSWRL has also signed up with other businesses to be part of the Great Aussie Vaccine Drive which sees employers make it easier for workers to get vaccinated.

If you can’t make it this Sunday, there are other vaccination appointments available at the vaccination centres over the next two weeks.

Every person who gets vaccinated is making a difference and will help get us all back to sport sooner. By teaming up, we can vaccinate as many people as possible to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Representatives from the Queensland Rugby League and statewide competition clubs today discussed the impact of the State Government’s decision to extend lockdown in south east Queensland until Sunday, August 8.

It was determined this weekend’s Intrust Super Cup (Round 16) and Hastings Deering Colts (Round 13) fixtures will be postponed.

While the QRL will “explore all options” to ensure as many games are played as possible, the league is waiting on further information before making a final determination on whether the fixtures originally set down for this weekend will be rescheduled.

This outcome follows the decision to cancel all of last weekend’s Round 15 Intrust Super Cup and Round 12 Hastings Deering fixtures due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Queensland.

These fixtures (from the weekend of July 31-August 1) will not be rescheduled.

Training in Isolation

Rationale – like any skill, time not doing that movement or coordinated activity will result in a decline in your ability to perform that activity autonomously.

In this time of isolation it’s important to focus on maintenance of your current abilities and fitness, while being inventive to replicate the movement and coordinated activities.

One of the best kickers in Rugby League, who had amazing control over the footy at training and in the game, suffered a grade 2 injury preventing him from kicking for three weeks.

His first few kick practice sessions back were awful, in timing and effectiveness – he used the example of golf and tennis saying the difference between elite sport people and others is that last ½ % in timing and execution.

He got back to his usual in a week.

Dear clubs, players, volunteers and JRL families,

Following a meeting with all 14 clubs, the decision to abandon the remainder of this seasons competitions was advised.

With grand finals due to be played on the last weekend in August and lockdown in place until then there was no alternative other than to cancel the remainder of the season.

I can confirm that there was also no extension into summer sport allocations granted like last season.

We have however committed to providing some form of rugby league experience if the health orders and time permits, with gala days to be organised for our younger age groups in both the male and female formats.

Further information around this will be provided as a clearer picture is understood in relation to a return to community sport.

Lastly I want to acknowledge all of our clubs and their volunteers for what was shaping up to be the Cronulla Sutherland junior leagues biggest year with bumper registration numbers.

Nearly 5500 players registered to play this year, a number never seen in our leagues history. We hope all return for season 2022!

Following the news today the lockdown of Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, Shellharbour and Wollongong has been extended until 28 August 2021, the NSWRL is presently working through the implications that this decision has for our plans to resume Major and Community Competitions in those areas.

Clearly, there can be no resumption of competitions during the lockdown period. At the moment, we are taking health advice and we are also consulting closely with the Office of Sport and the other major winter sports about possible scenarios. We expect to be in a position to provide you with further information about the competitions in the early part of next week.

The NSWRL would like to remind all Leagues and Clubs across the Greater Sydney Region that the restrictions, in line with the Public Health Order, mean training IS NOT sanctioned or permitted under any circumstances.

The restrictions in place for Regional NSW Leagues and Clubs outside the Greater Sydney Region remain unchanged but they must adhere to COVID-19 safety restrictions and be aware of the potential impacts.

We have received an update from Cronulla JRL.

As we are all aware the current NSW Public Health Order and associated lock down has been extended to at least 30th July.

This has had a significant impact on the Rugby League season and whilst there is currently no exact date for return to play, the intention is to return to play when it is safe to do so.

Cronulla JRL are currently looking at various scenarios as well as liaising with Sutherland Council. More broadly, NSWRL and other community sporting bodies are working with the State Government on what a return to community sport in 2021 looks like.

We still get to play in footy, till then stay safe, stay home, maintain social distance when required.
