Mounties win epic decider with historic scoreline

A Tilly Power field goal with two minutes left on the clock gave Mounties a 1-0 win over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in one of the most remarkable Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Finals ever played.

The score line alone underlines that fact, and then there was the myriad of try-saving tackles on both sides, the brutal hits, and the players limping from the field or needing treatment on it.

For the second year in a row the Harvey Norman trophy-winner has been decided by a field goal.

But last year in the 21-20 win by Wests Tigers there was 41 points scored from eight tries.

This year it was a gripping grind with a capital ‘G’.

It took Power steadying herself about 25m out in the 68th minute before the teams finally could be split.

“It was such a terrific game of footy. You can’t defend as much as that and not get a reward,” said Mounties coach Grant Izzard.

“They were outstanding – defence wins you games. Yes, we would have like to have been a bit more cleaner in our attack, but the Doggies put the pressure on us – all credit to them.

“They were gallant in defeat – they had wounded, we had wounded. We just got them at the right time.

“I actually think we won it in the first half when we defended six or seven sets in a row. We knew we could do anything after that.”

As for the field goal, Izzard had only one word to describe it.

“Beautiful … it was actually the run before which was just as critical,” he said referring to a 10m driving run from former Test prop Eliana Walton.

“Eliana’s run was unreal. She went on with eight minutes to go to make a difference – that was her job … she did it.

“As for Tilly, she’s been our best for the past five weeks. Her kicking game is second to none, she kicks goals from anywhere and she just never stops trying.”

Batcheys Blues – Get your ticket now

The Bulldogs players slumped to the ground – plenty of tears were shed.

“We bombed three tries in the first half and that would have been enough to win it,” coach Craig Sandercock said.

“You’ve got to hand it to Mounties. They put a lot of pressure on us and our defence was unbelievable in that second half.

“But Mounties controlled the ball so well and their kicking game in the second half was outstanding. They were just too good.”

The opening 35 minutes had plenty of missed opportunities from both sides.

From the Bulldogs knocking-on in-goal, to the Mounties being held up over the line twice, chances for points were slipping by.

Passes also weren’t sticking for either side, mainly due to some brutal defence from Mounties forwards Walton, Kerehitina Matua and Simaima Taufa or the Bulldogs trio of Kennedy Cherrington, Angelina Teakaraanga-Katoa and Tiana Raftstrand-Smith.

Opposing halfbacks Power and Tayla Preston were having a battle royale in both defence and attack. They chased their kicks downfield like women possessed and constantly worked the edges trying to find a way through for their support players.

In the second half, the consequences of a hard defensive game began to show.

Bulldogs five-eighth Gayle Broughton had to pass an HIA to stay on the field, while play was held up for several minutes while Taufa had trainers attend to her right shoulder. She left the field for 10 minutes then came back on.

Rafstrand-Smith limped from the field with five minutes left as trainers managed to persuade her to stay off.

In the end it became truly survival of the fittest.

Scores: Mounties 1 (Tilly Power 1 field goal) def Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 0.

Jillaroos teammates to lock horns on NSWRL Grand Finals Day

Jillaroos World Cup-winning teammates Simaima Taufa and Kennedy Cherrington tomorrow will be on opposite sides of the field for the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval.

A massive day of action that will see premierships decided for five competitions.

Taufa, who has been a stalwart for Mounties, and Cherrington, who joined Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as a marquee player this season, were part of the starting side that trounced New Zealand 54-4 in the Women’s Rugby League World Cup Final last year.

Mounties finished the season in fourth spot but upset Minor Premiers North Sydney Bears 18-16 to secure their spot in the decider.

While the third-placed Bulldogs ground their way to a 16-8 win over the Illawarra Steelers.

Mounties has been one of the most consistent teams in the competition after winning the title in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2019, but Cherrington was confident the Bulldogs would be able to hold their own.

“They have some very strong props and forwards, but I think we can match them,” she said.

“I’m confident in my team. We know how good they are and we’re ready to match them.

“It will be a middles game early and then a battle of the backs. We’ll be ready.”

The Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership will be the final match at Leichhardt Oval, with the day kicking off with the decider for the Women’s Country Championships.

Followed by the Junior Representatives Grand Finals; UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s), UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s) and Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s).

The Women’s Country Championship will determine the best women’s team from regional NSW and will involve the two best teams from northern and southern NSW.

Newcastle Maitland Region Knights, who will be looking for their second title after winning the competition in 2021, will take on Monaro Colts.

Harold Matthews Cup

The UNE Harold Matthews Cup will feature the Newcastle Knights, who had the second-best record for attack and defence in the competition, against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Canterbury Bulldogs secured their spot from fourth place after upsetting the top-of-the-table Penrith Panthers.

The UNE SG Ball Cup will feature the fourth-placed Parramatta Eels, who knocked the No.1 team, Canberra Raiders, out of the finals, against the third-placed Newcastle Knights, who scored a hard-fought win over Penrith Panthers.

Tarsha Gale Cup

The Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup will be an absorbing contest with the two most dominant teams of the competition, Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs meeting for the first time.

The two teams did not come together during the regular season due to the nine-round draw for the 13-side competition and there is little separating them

The Bulldogs just edge the Roosters in attack, while the Roosters were slightly better than the Bulldogs defensively.

Fans can catch all the action from five Grand Finals for only $5 at the gate, while children 12 and under are free. All matches will also be live streamed on NSWRL TV on the NSWRL Facebook page.

The Grand Final results will impact on the representative teams for Country v City at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Thursday 4 May, Saturday 6-Sunday 7 May.

There will be eight games played over the three days including Women’s Open Age, Men’s Open Age, Under 16s, Under 18s, Women’s Under 17s, Women’s Under 19s, Wheelchair Rugby League and Physical Disability Rugby League.

NSWRL GRAND FINALS SCHEDULE

12.45pm: UNE Harold Matthews Cup

Soliola stars as Dogs earn place in Grand Final

A Monalisa Soliola double has helped the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs into the 2023 Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final in their return season.

The Bulldogs, in their first NSW Women’s Premiership season since 2019, earned the victory in fine style with a 16-8 Semi-final win over the Illawarra Steelers Leichhardt Oval.

They exhibited plenty of grit after losing props Holli Wheeler (knee) and Angelina Teakaraanga Katoa (ankle), reducing them to 15 players for most of the second half.

They will now have to patch themselves up to face Mounties in next Saturday’s (29 April) Grand Final after they beat Minor Premiers North Sydney 18-16, in an equally tough contest in the earlier Semi-final.

“I’m proud of the girls because Holli has been our best player by a country mile, so to lose her and Ange and still come home with a win is massive,” said coach Craig Sandercock.

“They just showed that Bulldogs grit and determination. And I thought Monalisa really stood up in that second 35 minutes and really showed a what a terrific player she is.”

Soliola scored in the 38th and 59th minutes, taking a simple one-off-the-ruck pass and crashing through tacklers.

It meant a lot to both teams trying to make the decider in their first year. That determination led to some angst between players with several scuffles breaking out.

The Steelers won the penalty count 5-4 but it was one of the few statistics that went their way. Handling errors plagued them all afternoon.

“There was an essence of want and urgency that made them push things they wouldn’t necessarily push,” said Steelers coach Alicia-Kate Hawke.

“In terms of our completion rate, we’ve been up and down with that all season. So with a team that has such power like the Bulldogs you can’t win off poor set completions.

“Even after letting in that first try early in the second half we felt like we were breaking them down. But time just ran away from us,” Hawke said.

Harvey Norman – Official partner of the NSWRL

“The girls and their effort has been amazing to create such a culture in this Illawarra club. I’m super proud of that but what hurts most is that we know what could have been if we’d played our best footy.”

The match was level at 4-4 when the halftime whistle sounded.

Wingers Sarachen Oliver (Bulldogs) and Shakiah Tungai (Steelers) put points on the board early.

Soliola’s first try early in the second half and then a penalty to Tayla Preston put the Bulldogs out to 10-4.

Steelers halfback Rachael Pearson sent a low-trajectory kick to the right-hand corner in the 53rd minute, which winger Olivia Vale collected off one bounce to edge within two points (10-8).

But Soliola’s second four-pointer broke the Steelers hearts and despite several attacking raids upfield they couldn’t finish off those moves.

The Semi-finals of the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership on Sunday will help determine the make-up of the City-Country sides, who do battle in a fortnight, and ultimately the Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues Origin team.

NSW Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder plus Country coach Ruan Sims and City coach Kate Mullaly will be in the stands at Leichhardt Oval.

Sims and Mullaly were assistant Origin coaches last year and will be there again in 2023.

Hilder will not finalise her Origin team until after the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final on Saturday 29 April.

But there are Country-City jerseys to be decided before that, for the annual clash on Thursday 4 May at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah.

“We’ve been looking over personnel for those two teams for the past couple of months,” Hilder said.

“There are still six weeks to the opening Origin game so a lot can happen. Every player in this weekend’s Semi-finals should have that mindset that rep jerseys are on the line.”

The first Semi-final has the North Sydney Bears (1) against Mounties (4) after the women in red-and-black claimed the Minor Premiership for the second consecutive season last weekend.

“Both the Bears and Mounties are coming off wins in the final club round,” Hilder said.

“For me the Bears might be just ahead with the amount of experience and talent across the field.

Jillaroo and Sky Blue outside back Jess Sergis return to the centres for the Bears after she scored a hat-trick at fullback against South Sydney last week.

Photo: Steve Montgomery

The halves combination of 2022 Origin five-eighth Kirra Dibb and current Dally M winner Raecene McGregor has grown strong for the final five rounds of the competition.

McGregor took over the No.7 role from Silver Ferns hooker Nita Maynard (pictured above).

“The forward pack is going really well too with Sarah Togatuki and Kalosipani Hopoate in great form,” Hilder said.

“In saying that, Mounties have gone into games and come out winners when few expected them to.

They have a tremendous fighting spirit coming from that go-forward by the props and back-rowers.

Blatcheys Blues – On Sale Now

“This will be a good physical game and I can easily see Mounties getting the upper hand in the middle, but the Bears outside backs should prove too strong.”

The second Semi-final has the Illawarra Steelers (2) up against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (3), where Sky Blue fullback Emma Tonegato will play another weekend at lock for Illawarra.

“I’m sure it’s to get the ball in Emma’s hands more often and the Steelers don’t lose anything with Teagan Berry at fullback,” Hilder said.

“She’s fast and will bring the ball back at speed. Steelers can utilise her running better at No.1.”

Hilder believes the match should swing on the ability of the halves to create the attacking raids.

Steelers’ Taliah Fuimaono and Rachael Pearson face the equally crafty Gayle Broughton and Tayla Preston.

“Steelers hooker Keeley Davis is also sure to get her middles to muscle up and going forward, and I understand Kezie Apps (leg) will undergo a fitness test closer to game day.

She would be an added bonus if she can play,” Hilder said.

“To be honest I can’t pick this one. They are evenly balanced sides so whoever turns up on Sunday to play good football should come out winners.

“The Bulldogs have a great forward pack with the likes of Holli Wheeler, Kennedy Cherrington and Monalisa Soliola and a great set of halves, while Illawarra also have rep halves and highly-talented outside backs.”

Both Semi-finals at 11am and 12.45pm will be live streamed on NSWRL TV.

Roosters HNWP rocket into second spot after emphatic win

A hat-trick to fullback Shannon Rose helped propel the Central Coast Roosters into second spot on the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership table with a dominant 50-0 win over the St George Dragons Monday night.

Rose made the field her own with two first-half tries and a third early in the second half to help set up the Roosters’ biggest win of the season.

She was well supported by Roosters stand-in skipper and halfback Jocelyn Kelleher (pictured below), who was a deserved Player of the Match after setting up several tries as well as scoring two of her own.

Combine that with her five conversions and she posted a personal tally of 18 points.

Her halves partner, Maroons No.6 Tarryn Aiken, got in on the action scoring the Roosters 10th try after she landed a double in last week’s 38-6 win over the Wests Tigers.

The convincing win propelled the Roosters from fifth on the ladder to second, zooming ahead of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, North Sydney Bears and Mounties on a far superior for-and-against.

There is still plenty of congestion behind leaders

There is still plenty of congestion behind leaders the Illawarra Steelers (10 competition points) with the next four teams all on eight points with five rounds left.

Blatchys Blues – On Sale Now

Roosters coach John Strange rested several key players, including centre and captain Isabelle Kelly and hooker Shawden Burton.

“That gave some other girls an opportunity and I thought all 17 were brilliant,” Strange said. “The ones who stepped in did their job well and made themselves proud.”

He was particularly pleased his side didn’t drop intensity in the second 35-minutes despite being well in front on the scoreboard.

“It’s a mindset that we want to play with,” he said.

“It’s always about us and not the opposition, so it didn’t matter what the score was at half-time we just wanted to keep playing our style of footy.”

For Dragons coach Steve Kelly, and a team still searching for their first win of 2023, he said it was all about “putting building blocks in place”.

“The scoreline doesn’t show the effort the girls put in,” Kelly said.

“I’ve got half-a-dozen young girls who’ve never played a game at this level – we are very much a development squad.

“They try hard every week and we are working on the fundamental things each game.

They are getting better but it’s about putting the building blocks in place as we’re a new club.”

The Dragons are one of three new teams in the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership this year.

The game was probably over by half-time with the Roosters scoring four unanswered tries for a 20-0 lead.

Rose got her side off to the perfect start with two tries inside the first five minutes by terrorising the Dragons left-edge defence.

Hooker Joeli Morris and Jillaroos back-rower Olivia Kernick also crossed to put the Central Coast out to a comfortable lead after 35 minutes.

In the second half, Rose kept the momentum going for the Roosters with her third try as the home side camped themselves in Dragons territory.

The tries kept coming – six in all – with centre Kelsey Clark, winger Kiara Sullivan, Kelleher and Aiken following Rose’s initial four-pointer.Shannon Rose
