NSWCCC too good for NSWCHS

Five tries in the first 30 minutes lifted a rampant NSWCCC side to the ASSRL boys title in Redcliffe – and it was another dominant first half that settled the girls decider. Relive the action.

Watch a full replay of NSW CCC v NSW CHS (Boys grand final).

A first half try-scoring feast from the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges blew away their NSW Combined High Schools rivals as they claimed a stunning 40-10 ASSRL 18 years grand final victory.

NSWCCC ran in five tries in the first 30 minutes to deflate the spirits of NSWCHS – and doing the groundwork was hulking middle forward Jacob Halangahu, a Parramatta signed talent from Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown.

He was without powerful forward buddy De La Salle Va’a (Marcellin College, Randwick) but fullback Jaxen Edgar (St Dominic’s College, Kingswood, halves Heath Mason and Riley Pollard and lock Finau Latu brought their absolute best.

Who could forget the best dummy-half at the nationals, Zaidas Muagututi’a, whose second try put the nail in the coffin at 34-10.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full" src="https://content.api.news/v3/images/bin/e839942a7b046caecb7b0e4075c32ef6" alt="NSW CCC celebrate their big title success.
NSWCHS scored their first try with 18 minutes left and it was their trusted right wing finisher Nikora Williams who was the beneficiary of a line break and cut out pass by Kade Reed (Illawarra Sports High).

Five-eighth Lachlan Galvin crossed for NSWCHS’ second successive try to reduce the margin to 28 points, but the support play of Muagututi’a landed one final blow for the victors.

NSW CHS completely dominates Queensland

It was a sky blue winter’s day at Redcliffe and all sky blue on the field as well as NSW Combined HIgh Schools released the hand brake to roll all over the Queensland schoolgirls and win the ASSRL 18 years grand final.

NSW CHS claimed the premiership in style by 38-8, rattling up a 26-0 lead after a dramatic first half onslaught.

They then scored first in the second half, a deft chip and chase try to Kayla Henderson (Crestwood High) to widen the chasm between the two teams, before two successive tries by Queensland late on narrowed the margin.

Galvin shines for NSWCHS

NSWCHS five-eighth Lachlan Galvin is the good news Tigers fans need

It has been a dark week for all Wests Tigers fans, but there is one schoolboy giving them reason to hope at the ASSRL Nationals.

Struddys apparel

It has been a dark week for Wests Tigers fans, but there is one schoolboy giving them reason to hope.

In the space of a week Tigers fans have had to deal with the fact Luke Brooks is leaving for the Northern Beaches, they are lacking a recognised half for next season and they were pasted 74-0 in a historic thumping at the hands of the Cowboys.

It’s been tough.

But there is one shining light in the form of NSW CHS halfback Lachlan Galvin.

In the space of 60 minutes, the Westfields Sports High talent made it clear the future isn’t all doom at Concord, after masterfully steering NSWCHS to a dominant win over NSWCIS on Saturday.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://content.api.news/v3/images/bin/7c35cb24d9e12918cc32daa362ce6dfe" alt="NSWCHS player Lachlan Galvin NSWCIS Vs NSWCHS in the ASSRL national championships in Redcliffe.
The 17-year-old Campbelltown product, who was previously part of the Eels junior system, will join the Tigers top 30 squad next season.

I am loving it

“I am loving it (at the Tigers),” Galvin said. “I got there last year and I am loving it.

“I just want to focus on my footy, train hard. I go into the Top 30 next year.

“When I got there I looked up to the NRL boys. Wayne Lambkin was the coach at Westfield and he’s the reserve grade coach there now and he’s really helped me and my footy.”

Galvin wasn’t the only future Tiger to impress for the NSWCHS side, with winger Luke Laulilii scoring an impressive double.

The duo have played together at Westfields Sports High for a number of years, and the playmaker said their combination was sound.

“In the Harold Mathews Cup, he (Laulilii) was fullback and we worked really well together,” Galvin said.

“It’s good to play with him he’s very fast. I just have to find him, he gives me a lot of room and he follows me.”

When asked who Galvin models his game off he said it was Queensland five-eighth Cameron Munster.

The NSW Combined High Schools lethal wing combination of Nikora Williams and Laulilii, with Galvin at the trigger, blew away their NSW Combined Independent Schools rivals in a 24-6.

NSWCIS, who also feature a Tigers-bound playmaker in Alex Conti, will have little time to lick their wounds as they return to action at the ASSRL Nationals on Monday.

After a day off the field, the competition returns in a massive way with the first games for the Combined Affiliated States and ACT boys sides.

NSWCIS will cap off a massive day of action against the ACT, while the CAS side will meet a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges side flying off the back of a big win against Queensland on Saturday.

Monday’s action kicks off at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe with another three rounds of the fast and flashy Schoolgirls Nationals tournament.

Author : St Gregory's First XIII - Rugby League

St Greg’s Team of the Decade 1991-2000

This was a very successful decade at the College with 3 Schoolboy Cup wins (1991,1993 and 2000 Nutri-Grain Cup).

We also took home 3 MCS titles during this period and multiple other knock-out competitions.

At the helm of the side for the early 90’s was the one and only Peter Mulholland who still to this day is the most successful schoolboy rugby league coach in history (involved in 8 wins) and that is a record that will likely never be beaten.

His assistant during this time then took the reigns and Simon Huntley was head coach from 1994-2001 which made selection a little easier.

Thankfully we managed to speak to Peter before his passing about all things rugby league at St Greg’s..
So to the side!

And what a side it is.

Featuring 11 Australian Schoolboys and 16 players who had careers in the NRL! As photographs were scarce from this period we went with the old school team photo and some photoshopping!

Wearing the number 1 jersey is Matt Seers. Matt was electric on the field and could play anywhere in the backline.

He made the Australian Schoolboys team In 92 and played wing, centre and five-eighth but fullback became his home when he made his first grade debut for the Bears a year after he left school.

He went on to play 199 games for Norths, Wests and Wakefield, and was selected in the NSW Origin teams between 95-97.

Also highly rated here was Andrew Sanderson (1991) who was a terrific fullback.

He was difficult to bring down when returning the ball, and had excellent speed, he makes the extended bench.

John Deery (1993), was also another excellent fullback who takes one place on the wing in the side.

John was safe under the highball, a strong runner of the ball, incredibly fit and hit hard.

He also made an NRL debut and played games for the Dragons and Roosters. On the other wing is another Australian Schoolboy, Russell Richardson.

Russel could play wing, centre and fullback and had excellent speed and evasive skills.

Russell also became a world class centre playing 120 games for the Sharks, South’s and Knights and was selected for the Australian side in 1997 and 1999.

Honourable mentions go to Matthew Primmer (2000) who had an exceptional cup winning season on the wing that year, and makes the extended squad.

In the centres we have another pair of Australian Schoolboys

Blake Reavell (1997) who played three Seasons in the First XIII and had lightning speed, he was hard hitting in defence and scored countless tries in the sky blue and maroon.

His partner is Tim Horan (1991) who could play in the centres or at number six, he had an excellent kicking game and if there was a hole in the defensive line he would find it.

Tim also played 49 games for the Bunnies, Western Reds and Steelers.

At 7 is Kris Flint, who had a very memorable 1993 season (winning the Peter Sterling Medal in the final after being sent off!).

He was a terrific playmaker with fast acceleration and excellent vision, and when you see his highlights reel you will see plenty of this. Kris also snuck a few games in with the Panthers.

Also worth mentioning is Riley Mullins (2000) who was also a Peter Sterling medalist in the Cup final that year.

Riley was tough, crafty and had an excellent kicking game and was certainly in the debate for the 7.

Another half who was exceptional in the skyblue and maroon was Kain Cross (1991) who was zippy around the ruck, a smart footballer who never took a backward step. He takes a spot on the extended bench.

Wearing the 6 jersey is yet another Australian Schoolboy, Trent Barrett.

Trent played in the centres and at six in the first grade squads he played in and was outstanding in either position.

He was as fit as anyone could be and by all reports a beast in the gym, but on the field he was difficult to defend against, hard running and had excellent skills with ball in hand.

Post school Trent had an outstanding NRL career playing 295 games for the Steelers, Dragons, Wigan and Cronulla.

He also played 11 State of Origins for NSW and 15 matches in the green and gold for Australia.

Trent got the nod over Damien Chapman (1991, also an Australian Schoolboy) who had terrific 1990/91 seasons and was player of the year in 1991.

Damien was a skilful half, setting up and scoring tries, had great speed and kicked goals from everywhere.

He is another who went into the NRL playing 42 games for the Dragons, Western Reds and London Broncos and takes a place on the bench in the side.

Finally worth mentioning is Dallas Gonzo who played two seasons in the First XIII in the centres and at five-eighth in the Cup winning 93 side. Dallas was a terrific footballer, an excellent defender and hard running 6.

He takes a spot in the extended squad also.

At hooker the selectors were unanimous, Simon Bonetti (1994).

Tough as nails and a fearless defender, Simon went onto play six seasons with the Roosters clocking up 142 appearances in a terrific career which finished with a Premiership in 2002.

Simon took the starting spot but another exceptionally good defender and hooker was Robbie Mears (1992) who was certainly discussed at the selection table.

He was also an Australian Schoolboy, played well above his weight and was always involved on the field.

Up front is Michael Francis (1992) and Peter Cusack (1994) with Daniel Heckenberg (1997) taking a spot on the bench.

Mick was one of St Greg’s hardest hitting forwards, and we have featured him before on this page.

Mick was another Australian Schoolboy and renowned for his hard running and exceptional defence, playing well above his playing weight.

Mick played a number of seasons with South’s (playing 56 games) and a couple for London Broncos before retirement.

Peter Cusack had a terrific 94 season always putting his hand up for the hard runs and another hard hitter in defence.

Peter used his size to his advantage and always got the team moving forward.

He had an excellent NRL career playing 95 games for the Roosters, 73 for the Bunnies and another 62 for Hull. He was also selected for NSW Country on two occasions.

Off the bench is Daniel Heckenberg who also used his size to his advantage.

He ran hard and with confidence and defensive lines often buckled trying to take him down.

Daniel was another to have a successful NRL career playing 78 games for St George, Parramatta and the Sea Eagles before another 84 games in the English Super League.

These three got the nod over Kelvin Bramley (1994) and Nathan Boller (1991) who were also highly rated prop forwards.

Kelvin was Peter’s front row partner in 94 and was equally as important to the side.

He takes a spot on the extended bench.

In the backrow are another pair of Australian Schoolboys, and 1993 teammates being Wayne Evans and Peter Driscoll.

Wayne was a dangerous forward who could also play in the centres (where he did play at times), he had speed and size which made him very difficult to handle for opposing sides.

Wayne had an outstanding 93 season and post school played 90 games for the Western Reds, Melbourne Storm and Northern Eagles and finished his career at the London Broncos.

Peter was known as a gentle giant, not many ran with the ball harder and he always put his body on the line in defence.

He could also play in the front row where he played for South’s, notching up 37 games over three seasons.

Also in discussion was Michael Ostini who was a leader on the field and played his heart out every game, he makes the extended squad and features in the highlights.

Finally at lock is another fearless forward who had the skills of a half.

Michael Howell (2000) was hard, he ran hard and hit hard, but he could also kick, throw cut-out balls and led the forward pack in the 2000 Cup winning side.

He bled blue and maroon and his teammates loved playing with him. Michael also made his NRL debut for the Dragons were he made 15 appearances over two seasons.

What a side and what a decade!

St. Greg’s win MCS Grand Finals

Another super proud moment for myself being this group of fine young men coach, 2/2 in MCS GF’s!

How good is a Sub Tuum!!

Today the boys took on Blacktown Patrician Brothers in the MCS Grand Final.

After our assistant coach Stephen Bullock said to Coach Michael Bullock “let’s see if we can have a good start for once!” Unfortunately, we dropped the ball off the kick off haha.

We turned them away and got in a tussle in the middle of the field to become our own worst enemy with drop ball and penalties, for them to get down our end and score in the corner. 0-4.

We gained momentum with some great runs and wining the ruck, capitalising with a barge over try from Thomas Carroll. Conversion made by Rule 6-4.

Some poor choices and ball handling from both teams saw the halftime score stay at 6-4, we knew we had plenty of improvement in us!

St. Greg’s College Campbelltown win the 2021 MCS Cup (Photo : St. Greg’s College)

After getting a rest and a rev up from the coach, Zak Clarke decided to take 4 defenders over the line with him and score, conversion made by Rule 12-4.

The boys invited them back into the contest with another drop ball from Blacktown spiralling kick offs. They scored an easy try through the middle to make some nervous moments in the last 10 minutes at 12-10.

Attacking their line we looked like there was plenty of scoring opportunities, however, Blacktown did well to defend their line. It took another strong carry from non other, Zak Clarke to find his way across the white line.

With Rule making an important conversion to make it 18-10.

The boys defended their hearts out, showing great pride in the jersey to take the MCS Trophy back home.

A special mention to Jack Burrows, Oliver Kaluzyn and Lachlan McGufficke who made their 1st grade debut in the GF!

Thanks for the support everyone

Born To Be A Star

Story By : Dale Walker Nepean News

Panthers teen sensation Stephen Crichton is a man of many talents, and at one stage, Rugby League was not his strong side. At age 15, Crichton was playing in the third team at St Pat’s College Blacktown and was not under the notice of coaching staff or talent scouts.

In fact, Crichton, who commenced schooling at ‘Patties’ in year seven was an outstanding musician and a promising basketballer. Music Teacher Karen Davidson said that Crichton was the best drummer she had ever seen.

“I loved playing the drums and basketball was great fun also,” said Chrichton.“At the time I enjoyed basketball more than football and when I was asked to try out for reps I couldn’t as it clashed with the league finals.”

Following a season in the under 15’s, Crichton started to grow and became more co -ordinated which saw him enter the firsts team at age 16. St Pat’s Coach of nine years, Greg Beacroft, was impressed with the short turnaround in development. “He certainly was a late bloomer, that’s for sure,” said Beacroft.

“He had a good 16’s season and I was looking forward to the following year in the senior schoolboys competitions.” Playing SG Ball for Penrith, Crichton stood out.“This was a defining year for Crichton, said Beacroft.

“I asked him to play in the combined schools MCS team and he looked at me and said, ‘Sir I don’t think I’m good enough’.” “Stephen was the first one picked amongst the selectors and it was at this moment that he realised he has the ability to go a long way in the game.”

As a student, Stephen was a tremendous footballer,” said St Pat’s Year 12 Co – Ordinator Dom Cullen.“He is a vibrant lad and full of character.

Stephen was a pleasure to have around, he brought a good vibe to the place. His mind was on sports and that’s where he was always going to end up, we are very proud of him at St Pats.

”Crichton was born in Samoa and at the age of two moved to New Zealand before settling in Mt Druitt where he still lives today with Mum Gogosina and Dad Va’a. The youngster has five brothers, a sister and appreciates what life has presented to him.

“I’m motivated by how fortunate I have become through football,” said Crichton. “If I have a bad day I look back at the struggle growing up and how hard it was for mum and dad before I came along.

It can be easy for people to feel sorry for themselves, but I am in a good space so when I feel down I look at life in a positive manner and it helps me get through. “If I can pass on a positive outlook, I keep telling myself that there is always light at the end of a dark tunnel.”

Crichton’s father is a Pastor at the local Church and spends a lot of his down time with his family and the church. On many occasions he has been described as a young Israel Folau, and that’s just fine by him.

“I model my game on Israel, I look up to him in many ways, as a footballer, a person and our faith,” he said. “Israel uses his height and that’s something I can make the most of, it’s not an advantage that many footballers have.

I just aim to be the best at what I am doing and Israel provides that inspiration.” Crichton played his junior footy as a centre, but is most versatile in also being able to play fullback and wing.

He is an outstanding goal kicker and has been given the back up role for when Nathan Cleary is not a part of the first grade team. “I love kicking, I embrace the pressure that comes with it,” said Crichton.

His fondest schoolboy memory was the senior grand final against Westfield Sports High in 2018. St Pat’s had just scored in the corner to level the game and the full time siren was imminent. With the opposition crowd jeering, yelling, blowing horns and throwing debris on the field, Crichton was under immense pressure.

“I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life, I hit it sweetly and it sailed over and gave us the grand final win,” he said. “I remember vividly the goosebumps, and the St Pats crowd going wild, it would be a dream for that to happen in the NRL one day.

”Crichton, not only pays his respects to St Pats for landing where he is today but Panthers Assistant Coach Ben Harden instilled the confidence into the one time timid youngster.

“For a long time I didn’t have confidence in Rugby League. My brother Christian was playing first grade and many people were saying I was only getting a run because of my brother.

I never believed in myself but Ben had faith and selected me to play without a trial for the Panthers SG Ball team. Ben made me realise my potential, he was always providing the positivity required and brought the best out in me. I thank him for what he did every day.”

Coach Ivan Cleary has some big decisions on his hands, as Crichton is improving so much and so quickly he is warranting a spot in the run-on team.

He has been a standout for the Panthers in 2020, albeit coming off the bench in the first two rounds. And, it’s fair to say, if Crichton didn’t play the way he did, Penrith wouldn’t have grabbed victories on each occasion.

The world is at the feet of Crichton, still filling out like a young three-year-old colt primed to reach his peak. Many good judges have a big opinion of Crichton, and I’m personally of the belief, State of Origin and rep honours are beckoning in 2-3 years time.

Author : Alicia Newton NRL.com Reporter

Major competitions, including the Intrust Super Cup and Canterbury Cup, for second-tier men’s and women’s rugby league across Australia, along with national representative programs, have officially been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In conjunction with the NSWRL, QRL and Combined Affiliated States, the uncertainty around a return-to-play date and logistical difficulties have forced the game’s state governing bodies to cancel certain competitions for the remainder of the season.

Major competitions cancelled

Queensland

Harvey Norman Women’s National Championships

No official decision yet

Harvey Norman Women’s NSW Premiership
Community Rugby League
Ron Massey Cup
Sydney Shield

NRL head of football for participation, pathways and game development Luke Ellis said the decisions confirmed on Friday were made in the best interests for everyone’s health and safety.

“I know this will be a disappointing outcome for those involved in these competitions right across Australia, but the health and safety of those involved with rugby league must always come first,” Ellis said.

“It was essential for us to at least give the players, clubs and staff some certainty going forward so they can focus on themselves and their families during this uncertain time.”

No decisions have yet been made around State of Origin junior and senior representative teams or matches, while a final decision around community rugby league, including Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield will be made in the coming weeks.

Community rugby league in NSW had been placed on hold nine days ago until at least May 1.

A final decision on the Harvey Norman Women’s NSW Premiership is also yet to be confirmed despite Queensland’s equivalent, the inaugural BHP Premiership among the competitions to be cancelled.

While most major competitions across both states started in line with the NRL season just a fortnight ago, NSWRL’s Harold Matthews and SG Ball competition’s were six rounds into their seasons.

NSWRL CEO Dave Trodden said in a statement the uncertain nature of the coronavirus pandemic had taken decisions out of their control.

“It is devastating for everyone involved but the advice has changed dramatically since we suspended these competitions nine days ago,” Trodden said.

We understand the outcome is a heartbreaking one for the rugby league community.

Rob Moore
“We have an obligation to be part of the solution for this pandemic, both for the rugby league community and also for the community more generally. This view was uppermost in the minds of the board.”

QRL managing director Rob Moore added rugby league was a large part of the fabric in Queensland.

“We understand the outcome is a heartbreaking one for the rugby league community, but it’s a call that simply had to be made given the current circumstances,” Moore said.

The news follows after the NRL announced earlier on Friday the second edition of Magic Round, which was pencilled in for round eight in May this year, would no longer go ahead.
