Young Sharks impress in Wests trials

Pushing through sweltering conditions, the young Sharks showed promise in their respective trials on Saturday as they continued to build steam ahead of the junior representative seasons.

The scoreboard was an afterthought, with the coaches again deploying extended squads and testing various combinations, but the results were as follows:

Trials at Hillier Oval – Saturday, January 13

Cronulla Sharks Harols Matthews Cup team vs Wests Magpies (Photo – Steve Montgomery)

Harold Matthews Cup (under 17s men)

Sharks 4 tries lost to Wests 5 tries

There remains room for improvement, namely in the way of rectifying unforced errors and ill-discipline, but coach Brad Kelly was largely happy with what his players produced.

“There were definitely some patches where we were better and … we were able to execute in some parts of the game,” Kelly said.

“I reckon the heat and fatigue definitely played a factor there as well for both teams … It was a chance to get them all on the field and playing again.

“It’s a bit of a balancing act between giving everyone enough time to play but also trying to build combinations as well.”

SG Ball Cup (19s men)

Sharks 4 tries drew with Wests 4 tries

Up against a physically imposing, hard-running Wests outfit, the Sharks didn’t shirk their task. Cohesion is still building, with many players pulling on the club’s jersey for the first time on Saturday, but the signs are positive.

“It’s another week of work and education for the boys and hopefully we progress and get better next weekend and then ready for round one,” coach Dave Howlett said.

Lisa Fiaola Cup (17s women)

Sharks 1 try lost to Wests Tigers 3 tries

Despite being slightly down on numbers with some players still on holiday, coach Robbie Taylor was pleased with his team’s commitment, particularly without the ball.

“Really proud of how we went out there,” he said.

“We worked a lot in pre-season on defence and we showed we can go alright defensively when it matters. Tigers are a big side, a lot of energy, so we had to aim up.”

Tarsha Gale Cup (women’s 19s)

Sharks 6 tries beat Wests Tigers 0

Coach Isaac Michael was delighted that his squad competed hard and maintained their communication under fatigue in the heat.

“Once we got into our rhythm, worked on our roles and worked hard for each other with our push-support, we got that ruck moving and the game became a little bit easier for us,” Michael said.

“We’ve got that mentality where we’re always pushing for each other and always ready to take the next carry. We’re working hard for each other the whole game.”

Under 16s Academy (men)

Sharks 4 tries drew with Macarthur Wests Tigers 4 tries

After a hot start, the Sharks somewhat faded as the contest wore on. While the Sharks used around 20 players, their opponents played a fresh team in each third.

“I thought overall we did OK. Our first 20 (minutes) was our best and we played really well, controlled the field position and the ball,” coach Paul Gallen said.

“After that, we didn’t play that well, to be honest. We made a lot of silly errors, a lot of poor discipline and they came right back into it.

“It was a good test for them. They were a big, strong team, Wests, and they had some good skill … It was a good game.”

Under 18s Academy (men)

Sharks 7 tries beat Macarthur Wests Tigers 3 tries

It was a case of nailing the basics as the under-18s Academy team impressively dictated terms for the majority of the contest.

“We went well. The boys played good, simple footy, the ‘run hard’ and ‘tackle hard’ was strong all game, and they backed that up with a good kick-chase as well,” coach Jared Starr said.

“They just won the momentum battle of the game … They just did all the little things really well. I thought the effort was really good in this heat.”

Panthers Junior Reps Round 5 wrap

The Panthers’ Harold Mathews and Tarsha Gale sides recorded impressive wins in Round 5, however the SG Ball team suffered their first loss of the season.

Tarsha Gale Panthers outplay Wests TigersNSWRL

Penrith Panthers have claimed their second victory of the Tarsha Gale Cup season, beating the Wests Tigers 22-10 in a nailbiter at BlueBet Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers went close to scoring twice in the opening quarter hour, however they were denied both times due to Tigers players stripping the ball.

Panthers captain Yasmine Baker came up with a trysaver of her own in the 7th minute, producing a perfect cover tackle as the Tigers raced down the sideline.

The Panthers continued to attack

The Panthers continued to attack, with back-to-back sets on the Tigers line finally resulting in a try to Taya Lazare after a kick was dabbed behind the defence.

Five minutes later they were in again as Jemimah Tagaloamatua produced an offload to send Baker in out wide. Jaida Staben landed the difficult conversion to make the score 10-0.

An error by the Tigers gave the Panthers a perfect opportunity to score in the dying seconds of the first half, with Tagaloamatua crashing over out wide. Staben added the extras after the siren to take a 16-0 lead to half time.

The Panthers got off to a bad start to the second half, making an error with their first use of the ball to give the Tigers attacking field position.

From the next set, Taytana Pati Ah-Cheung sliced through to reduce the margin to 16-6.

The Tigers scored again in the 40th minute when Imogen Lowe buried her way over the line out wide.

The conversion attempt by Imogen Hope hit the upright, leaving the Panthers a converted try ahead.

They looked like adding a third try five minutes later, only for Mackenzie Doust to come up with a trysaver out wide.

Repeated mistakes gave the Tigers more chances to draw level, however the Penrith defence turned them away at every attempt.

The Panthers were finally able to put some pressure of their own on, with Bella McEachern scoring the match-sealer with two minutes to play.

Staben added the goal to take the final margin to 22-10.

Harold Matthews Panthers thump Magpies to enter top four

The Panthers were clinical in both defence and attack as they beat the Western Suburbs Magpies 22-4 to cement a position in the top four.

There was not much to split the two teams, however the Panthers were better able to ice their opportunities and shut down the Magpies attack through good line speed and physicality in defence.

Lock Kye Raven was instrumental in the victory, his tough running game complimented nicely by his silky passing ability.

Centre Casey Mclean was explosive with the ball, often bending the defensive line with his runs to give the Panthers momentum in attack.

The home team opened the scoring in the 5th minute when a beautiful offload from second rower Heinz Lemoto allowed Jack Attard to dive over untouched.

Conversion successful, 6-0.

In the 6th minute, fullback Jaxen Edgar continued his fine form this season when he executed a beautiful in and away move to get past his man and put centre Cameron Bamblett over in the corner.

Conversion slightly wayward, 10-0.

The Magpies replied to the early onslaught with a good left side shift in the 9th minute.

Centre Heamasi Makasini found some space and fended off a defender to score the away team’s first try of the morning. Conversion unsuccessful, 10-4

HALF TIME: 10-4

The Panthers extended their lead in the 38th minute when the ball went through the hands to Jacob Kelly, who sprinted down the left wing for 40 metres before turning it back inside to Casey Mclean.

Kelly then added the extras with a beautiful sideline conversion, 16-4.

In the 41st minute, lock Kye Raven used his strength and power to steamroll the defensive line, dragging multiple defenders with him in an incredible solo effort to score underneath the posts.

Conversion successful, 22-4.

The game would develop into a tense arm wrestle, with both teams having chances to put points on the board but neither able finish off the job thanks to some outstanding defensive efforts.

The Panthers held a comfortable lead for the rest of the game, with the boost in point differential seeing them enter the top four for the first time this season.

FULL TIME: 22-4

SG Ball Panthers suffer first loss in tight match

The Panthers went down to the Western Suburbs Magpies 26-22, the match was a seesawing affair until a late try stole it for the away team.

The loss means the Panthers drop down the ladder but remain in the top eight thanks to their unbeaten start to the season.

The Magpies opened the scoring when Jordan Miller steamed onto the ball in the 3rd minute, the barnstorming prop using his size to crash over for the first try of the game.

Conversion by Zakauri Clarke successful, 0-6.

The away team extended their lead in the 7th minute when Lachlan Galvin stepped off his right foot and sliced through the line to score.

Conversion successful, 0-12.

The Panthers would then hit back in the 22nd minute when Tana Papu thundered onto a short ball and barged his way over to put the ball down on the white line.

Conversion successful, 6-12.

In the 30th minute, Luke Hanson showcased his creative flair, providing a sublime ball to Hudson Brown who ran 10 metres and scored the try without a hand laid on him.

Although the conversion was unsuccessful, the Panthers would go into the sheds with all the momentum.

HALF TIME: 10-12

The home team would hit the front for the first time in the 43rd minute when Wilson De Courcey showed outstanding pace to sprint around the Magpies defence and down the righthand wing.

He ran for 40 metres before executing a perfectly weighted chip kick back infield which Riley Pollard pounced on to score under the posts.

Conversion successful, 16-12.

The away team would fire back in the 48th minute when fullback Heath Mason burst down the wing and beat a couple of tired defenders to score the Magpies third try of the afternoon.

Sideline conversion unsuccessful, 16-16.

In the 53rd minute, centre William Craig broke the line and ran 40 metres before beating the fullback.

But a fantastic cover tackle by Billy Phillips stopped what looked to be a certain try.

Two plays later, the Magpies took advantage of the scattered defensive line, shifting the ball all the way to the right to allow Zakauri Clarke to score in the corner.

Conversion unsuccessful, 16-20.

In the 62nd minute, Jenson Tuaoi showed great deception from dummy half to give Luron Patea a slight opening.

The prop turned a half chance into four points, burrowing under the defence to put the Panthers back in front. Conversion successful, 22-20.

Unable to hold on to their lead, the Magpies would hit the front for a final time in the 66th minute when their hooker scooted out from dummy half and muscled his way over the line. Conversion successful, 22-26.

Despite suffering their first defeat, the SG Ball Panthers remain near the top of the ladder because of their fantastic start to the season.

Return of Lisa Fiaola Cup key to strengthening women’s pathways

Creating the link between U17s and U19s girls wanting to continue to play Rugby League was further strengthened this week at the Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day at Tuggerah’s Central Coast Regional Sporting Complex.

Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues head coach Kylie Hilder, who is also the NSWRL’s Female Pathways Manager, was on hand to see what the talent pool looks like this year.

There were 15 sides playing on Tuesday 27 September under the watchful eye of Hilder with several Sky Blues players helping in a coaching consultant role

“We don’t have winners coming out of the day. It was more about girls turning up and having a game of footy,” Hilder said.

“We’re trying to create that next step in the pathway. We need to fill that void in that younger age group before Tarsha Gale.”

Lisa Fiaola CupBaxter and Studdon mic’d up for Lisa Fiaola Cup (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The Harvey Norman Tasha Gale Cup for U19s has been part of the NSWRL calendar since 2018. Twelve clubs took part in the 2022 season with the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy beating the Newcastle Knights 12-10 in the grand final.

Hilder said it was her hope that an U17s competition could be set up running in tandem with the U19s.

“We need to accommodate these younger girls and watching them today I can tell you there’s some extremely good talent,” she said.

It was the first Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day in three years – the previous two being cancelled due to COVID-19.

“There were only about five teams back then,” Hilder said. “But the standard and level here is extremely impressive. Looking at some of these girls it looks like they’ve been playing for five years already.”

Another plan on the horizon is starting a Sky Blues Academy, where players from the Lisa Fiaola would be identified and invited to train there.

This week games consisted of 10-minute halves and teams were spread across three pools. Each team played four matches with a total of 360 females taking part in the event.

Teams came from Parramatta Eels, Central Coast Roosters, Victoria Storm, Newcastle Knights, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, Illawarra Steelers, Penrith Panthers, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Northern Tigers, Northern Rivers Titans, St George Dragons, North Coast Bulldogs, Western Rams, and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

Wests Tigers announce 2022 Development Players

Wests Tigers are pleased to confirm its Development Players for the 2022 season as an extended squad returned to training this week.

With a number of new faces included in the wider squad, three young talented players will feature as part of the Development list this year — local juniors Henry O’Kane and Brandon Tumeth as well as Apisalome Saukuru.

2021 Development Players Reece Hoffman and William Kei have both been promoted to the full-time squad for the year ahead.

All still Jersey Flegg-eligible in 2022, O’Kane, Tumeth and Saukuru were all named as part of the wider U/21’s squad last week under the guidance of new Coach Scott Kenna.

While still several months away, it’s likely that the trio will begin the season in that competition before they transition through the pathways system.

“It’s great a great opportunity for Henry, Lomi and Brandon to sign on with Wests Tigers as development players for the 2022 season,” Wests Tigers Football Operations and Recruitment Manager Warren McDonnell said.

“These players have all worked tirelessly over the past few seasons to get themselves to this position and they thoroughly deserve the opportunity to learn and grow from being in the full-time training environment.”

The Macarthur Conference rugby league competition will launch in 2022 off the back of substantial Junior rugby league growth in junior development in the South Western Sydney region.

The Conference set up will have Wests Tigers Macarthur Junior Rugby League, Group 6 Junior Rugby League and Group 6 Senior Rugby League all play in combined competitions from under 13 to first grade.

Aim of the new structure is to continue building the foundation for future growth in the area and pathways through to Wests Tigers in the NRL.

The club says that despite having consecutive seasons affected by Covid, Wests Tigers Macarthur and Group 6 competitions enjoyed a healthy rise in participants throughout 2021 by almost 10 percent.

Biggest improvement was in the 13 to 15-year-old range.

At a schoolboys level, Picton Magpies junior Aaron Keppie and Liverpool Catholic Club junior Luke Laulilii, pictured, will both move into the 2022 Harold Matthews team for Western Suburbs Magpies.

Both boys had strong individual seasons that culminated in them winning selection in the NSW Schoolboys merit team.

Finishing the regular season in the top four, the entirety of the Magpies’ Harold Matthews spine and lock are also all eligible for the competition again in 2022.

In more positive news, Wests Tigers said that there were more than 500 applicants for the 2022 Harold Matthews and SG Ball trials in the South West.

And to strengthen its junior development network experienced new coaches have been brought in to the development structure.

Matt Betsey (Head of Pathways), Brett Kimmorley (Pathways Coaching), David Fauonuku (JRL Coaching) and Kate Mullaly (Wellbeing) have recently joined the likes of Paul Sironen (Balmain JRL), Shannon Gallant (Wests & Group 6 JRL, pictured.) and Fita Hala (Talent ID) in delivering the next generation of Wests Tigers talent.

The club says the return of Tim Sheens from England will add further experience and knowledge to the pathways program.

The club says it is also continuing to invest in a number of talented coaches in South Western Sydney, such as Robert Mears, Joey Saukuru, Leon Bott, Joe Galuvao and Nathan Lakeman.

Wests Tigers also enjoy a strong partnership with St Gregory’s College and base the two Western Suburbs junior representative programs from the school with full access to fields, gym, recovery pools, rehabilitation and video review rooms.

As the 2022 season approaches, the club’s annual Brydens Lawyers Wests Tigers Academy continues to operate virtually with a digital execution of the weekly programs for the club’s elite juniors.

The elite group of U/17s and U/19s players from Balmain, Wests and Group 6 regions started the annual academy at the beginning of June prior to lockdown restrictions before adjusting the program to virtual platforms throughout August and September.

A select number of those players will then transition into the 2022 pre-season in November with Wests Tigers as well as their respective junior representative commitments.

Western Suburbs / Macarthur Wests Tigers

Wests Harold Matthews squad has eight local players returning to play from last year’s squad, while several key members of the 2021 Andrew Johns Cup squad (who trained part-time with the Magpies) will be promoted into the squad full-time.

2021 NSW Merit members and local juniors Aaron Keppie and Luke Laulilii also join the squad — making 93% of the Harold Matthews side made up of local juniors.

A number of key members of the 2021 Laurie Daley Cup squad will transition to the 2022 SG Ball squad this year with Queensland signings Keenen Tempest, Herman Tofaeono and Junior Taungatua boosting the team for the new campaign.

Note that players who are 16 years of age in 2022 and play locally (in either Wests Tigers Macarthur or Group 6 JRL) will be considered for selection in both the Wests Harold Matthews and Macarthur Wests Tigers Andrew Johns Cup teams.

Weststigers Junior Rep’s coaching staff announce for 2022 Season

Wests Tigers have today confirmed a number of new appointments for its 2022 junior representative programs across the Balmain, Western Suburbs and Macarthur competitions.

With increased focus and commitment to the pathways programs at the club, Wests Tigers are pleased to welcome on board a number of new coaches with experience of what is required to succeed at the next level as well as coaches with a strong development focus.

The club’s seven junior representative teams will be supported by NRL Premiership-winning halfback Brett Kimmorley, Balmain legend Paul Sironen and Wests local Shannon Gallant, who are all employed in full-time roles with Wests Tigers.

At Western Suburbs, Joey Saukuru bolsters the SG Ball squad coaching staff with successful Harold Matthews Coach Nathan Lakeman coming on board as his assistant.

Former Wests Tigers hooker and Campbelltown junior Robert Mears returns to the club as Head Coach of the Harold Matthews side — aided by experienced assistants Stephen Isdale and Shayne McMenemy.

Robert Mears celebrates a try for Wests Tigers during his playing days. ©NRL Photos

Balmain will retain Scott Kenna as its SG Ball Coach with Kenna’s Assistant Coach from 2021, Christopher Crotty, moving to Head Coach of the Harold Matthews side.

Kenna will be joined by former Windsor Wolves Coach Chris Yates and experienced defensive coach Gavin Sheehan, while both Balmain squads will also be supported by experienced staffers in Matt Kenna and Jim Khamis in their thorough preparation.

The Macarthur Wests Tigers Laurie Daley Cup coaching staff has been strengthened by the appointment of Tom Morrison as Head Coach following his time as Head Coach of the Magpies’ SG Ball side in 2021.

He will be assisted by Michael Holz and Andrew Clarke while a strong development coaching team will support Andrew Johns Cup Head Coach Wayne Azzopardi with local teacher Harrison Fox and Ben Taylor as his assistants.

Wests Tigers Tarsha Gale squad will again be led by David Fauonuku and Letitia Taylor as they look to capitalise on the progress made by last year’s squad in securing a finals berth.

Wests Tigers Pathways Coaching Manager Brett Kimmorley said the group of highly-skilled coaches would be of great benefit to the club’s pathways program.

“After speaking with all of these coaches, I’m really confident that we’ve put together a strong team of coaches who will focus on core skills as a priority,” Kimmorley said.

“I can’t wait to get out there and support them with their own professional development, helping with ideas on training sessions and mentoring development players in key positions.”

Wests Tigers would like to congratulate all the coaches and officials involved with the club’s junior representative programs in 2022 and look forward to a strong and successful year.

The club will confirm its squads for the 2022 Harold Matthews, SG Ball, Laurie Daley and Andrew Johns Cup competitions later this week.

2021 Wests Tigers Tarsha Gale Cup had another successful season in 2021— finishing the season with a winning record and a top four finish.

Although the U/19s women’s players were disappointed they couldn’t go all the way in 2021, they have plenty of reasons to be proud of themselves following an impressive campaign.

With five wins from eight games in the regular season, Wests Tigers finished in fourth position on the ladder, however they were knocked out in the Elimination Final by St George Dragons who went on to win the competition.

Wests Tigers went undefeated at home in 2021, winning all four games in front of their fans including a 20-12 triumph over the eventual premieres, the Dragons, in Round 4.

A highlight of the season was seeing local junior and Tarsha Gale Cup captain Jessica Kennedy progress from the U/19s to the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership.

She made her debut against Glebe Dirty Reds in Round 9 at Campbelltown Stadium, becoming Wests Tigers Women’s Player #50.

Kennedy’s progression through the Wests Tigers development system is another example of club’s success and commitment to the women’s game.

Kennedy joined the likes of Emily and Sophie Curtain as players who have progressed from the Wests Tigers Tarsha Gale Cup side into the club’s Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership.

“Our captain Jess Kennedy played every minute of the season in the middle of the field,” Wests Tigers Tarsha Gale Cup coach David Fauonuku said.

“She has been in our side for three years — two years as captain — and she’s had a great year.

“She’s been the standout all year and hopefully she can keep playing well and go on to bigger things.”

BEST GAME
In the final match of the regular season — with play-off positions on the line — Wests Tigers produced one of the biggest upsets of the season as they dominated the second-placed Illawarra Steelers to secure a top four position.

With plenty to play for, Wests Tigers raced out the blocks to score three tries — including a double to Jayme Willingham — in the opening 19 minutes to shock their opponents.

Wests Tigers held a 25-0 lead before the home side scored two consolation tries as the match ended 25-10 at Collegians Sporting Complex in Wollongong.
