France, England and Wales pick up wins in opening round of European U19s Championships

England, France and Wales made impressive starts to the U19s European Championship in the first round of matches held at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the French Pyrenees yesterday (Sunday).

Full back Eligh Wilkinson scored a first half hat trick and landed seven goals as holders England defeated Ukraine 70-8, Rio Walker and Zac Bennett each with two of their total of 14 tries. England head coach, Gary Hewer, commented:

“The boys have responded really well to the hot conditions and given a thorough performance against a very resilient Ukraine side who never stopped for the full 80 minutes.

“From a coaching point of view, it’s disappointing to concede a try but the effort and determination that the Ukrainians put in, and with the friendship and bonds we’ve created over the last four or five years, they deserved it.”

Hewer added: “We’ll utilise the whole squad over our group games but some of them put their hands up today showing what they can offer.”

Hooker Cruz Death claimed Ukraine’s late try, head coach Artur Martyrisian, noted: “It was a good experience for our team. We have not had a lot of time to train together and set aside our domestic championship because so many players are in the army.

“Great thanks to our heritage players because, without them, we might not have been able to participate.”

Leny Stacul was the French star with four tries as they beat Scotland 96-6. The host nation crossed 16 times in all, back rower Adrian De La Rose with a try treble, Thibault Guttierez kicking a perfect 15 conversions.

Scotland were reduced to 12 men in the 36th minute following a sending off.

In the third match, Wales held on to deny Serbia 52-30, Regan Preece with three tries and Kevan Phillips claiming 24 points from two tries and eight out of nine goals.

Wales head coach, Gary Dunn said of the victory: “I was pleased with the result more than the performance, there are loads of aspects to improve on.

“There were some good individual tries, and I can’t fault any of the effort, but we need to analyse this before we face England on Wednesday, Serbia were a little unknown to us.”

Serbia had three players sinbinned, scrum half Tyson Walker with two of their tries and a total of 18 points.

“I’m proud of the boys, both domestic and heritage players,” noted head coach Vladislav Dedic.

“We had to rally dig deep against a good side. The sinbins harmed us but when it was 13 on 13, we were the better side. We need to work on our discipline.”

Norway youth travel to Serbia

Norway’s U16s and U19s sides will tour Serbia from 29 August to 1 September 2024 to participate in the Belgrade Trophy, the youth tournament organized by the Belgrade Rugby League Federation and supported by Belgrade City Council since 2005.

The sides will play in a double header against their Serbian counterparts at the FC Radnicki Novi Beograd Stadium on Sunday 31 August (kick off U16s 4pm, U19s 6pm, local time)

Both matches live streamed on the European Rugby League and Serbian Rugby League Facebook pages.

For the visitors, it will revive memories of their first-ever junior international in May 2017, when Serbia U18s went to Nannestad, north of Oslo to face the Norwegian U19s, winning 54-12.

Norway U16s and U19s head coach, Tim Jones, commented: “The Norwegian players are coming off a camp in Lillestrom with their mood upbeat but expectations realistic.

The young Vikings are in a very much development phase of our National Youth Pathway.

But there is currently a huge buzz about rugby league in Norway, with many people working hard behind the scenes both at club and national level.”

”I’m very happy with both squads”

Jones added: “I’m very happy with both squads and looking forward to every player gaining vital game experience to help aid their development.

It’s a win-win situation for us regardless of the results, by giving the boys a very tough competitive fixture.”

Vladislav Dedic, Serbia U19’s national team coach, noted: “We look forward playing against Norway. After the Euro U19s Championship here, this is a perfect game to test our guys again.

As young players they appreciate all chances to represent their country, and this is an opportunity for some to put themselves on the radar for the open age national team.”

Serbia U16’s national team coach, Milos Stamenkovic, said: “This year has been exceptionally exciting for our young players.

In addition to participating in the European Championship, we had the honour of hosting Featherstone Lions.

With matches against Norway now our players are effectively ending their school summer break with a rugby ball in hand.

The atmosphere in the team is fantastic, and we believe that these games will bring much benefit and joy to both our guests and ourselves.“

Featherstone Lions u16s return from tour to Serbia, And Tributes Paid To Dusan Novakov

Featherstone Lions U16 have returned from a highly successful trip to Serbia.

They played two matches, going down 30-22 to Red Star Belgrade’s youth team at the FC Sava 45 football ground and defeating Morava Cheetahs youth in Leskovac, 280km from the capital, 34-0 at FC Sloga.

The trip was in part conceived by Lions’ director of rugby, Darren Fisher, who is also head coach of the Serbia men’s national side.

Lions U16s head coach, Craig Barker, commented: “I’d like to thank the Serbian Federation for accommodating us on this tour, without their help and support it wouldn’t have been possible.

“The staff along with every player and parent were looking forward to this trip for almost a year and we thoroughly enjoyed experiencing what Serbia had to offer both on and off the field.

It has been a wonderful experience for the group.

“To be the first club youth team to tour this country is an honour not lost on any of us and we have made some amazing memories.”

Serbian Rugby League Federation director, Radoslav Novakovic, commented: “We were very pleased that Featherstone Lions U16 toured here after our successful hosting of the Euro U19 in Belgrade.

“For us, youth players are essential for the further development of rugby league in Serbia.

We thank the Lions and their management for making this tour happen and to test our up and coming players.

It was especially important for us to play a match in Leskovac, a club with over 18 years of tradition, which works a lot on the development of young players.

The visit of an English team

The visit of an English team from the rugby league heartland meant a lot to this community.”

Serbian Rugby League, meanwhile, are mourning the death of Dusan Novakov on 13 August 2024, at age of 86.

A pioneer of the sport in the country, he played more than 100 matches for Rugby League Club Jedinstovo from Pancevo and Rugby League Club JSP Pancevo from 1955 to 1964.

He was a league champion in 1957 and Yugoslav cup winner the following year, voted as the best player in Yugoslavia in 1961.

Dusan Novakov played an international against France in Banja Luka on 21 May 1961, in front of over 5,000 fans.

Serbian Rugby League Federation, general secretary, Vladan Kikanovic, said in tribute: “Dusan left big legacy in Serbian rugby league history which will always be remebered.

The Serbian Rugby League Federation expresses its deepest condolences to Dusan’s family and his home club Dinamo from Pancevo.”

Jovan Vujosevic, European Rugby League regional director, added: “I had the honor of knowing Dusan.

Novakov was present at the first matches when rugby league returned to Serbia at the beginning of the 2000s.

He was a great rugby enthusiast and left a deep mark on both codes of Serbian rugby.”
