Wales win fourth u16 four nations title

Wales remain unbeaten in the U16s Four Nations Championship, picking up their fourth successive title when they defeated England 30-10 in a winner-takes-all clash at the Gnoll in Neath.

Loose forward Rhys Wood led them to glory with two tries in a dominant second half, after the hosts led 10-4 at the break.

Wales U16s head coach, Tom Marsh, commented:

“It’s a brilliant result, England were really tough with their greater experience but our lads stuck to their task and dealt with it amazingly.

We give lads great opportunities and letting them see professional environments and they have really bought into it, they’ve been training since January and amazing all year.

“There’s a pathway there and the talent we’ve got in South Wales is fantastic.”

Wales took the lead in the seventh minute, prop Danny Jones creating a try for Max Phillips who dived over in the corner.

England levelled through winger Jaden Udegbe with the first of his two tries, spurning another opportunity soon after when spilling the ball diving for the line.

The hosts were back in front when stand off Jack Parrott cleverly offloaded to Leighton Clarke, Parrott converting with the first of his three goals.

Wales started the second period impressively, Alfie Davies and Mason Lewis crossing in quick succession, Wood then claiming his brace.

The only black mark for the Welsh were two dismissals, Danny Jones with his second red card of the tournament for a head butt and, after the final whistle, Cyrus Owen-Green shown one for striking.

In the other encounter on the final weekend of competition, Scotland opened and closed the scoring but Ireland were the stronger side throughout, winning 34-14 in Hawick.

Blair Murray crossed for the home side in the ninth minute, but the Irish were 18-4 ahead at the interval courtesy of touchdowns by Oscar Bradley, Callum McDonald and Noah Walsh, each of which Joseph Clarke improved.

Clarke went over twice on the resumption to finish with an 18-point haul, and Bradley claimed his second score on 52 minutes.

Scotland posted consolation touchdowns by Jay Cruikshank and Murray again, with Reece McAdam adding a conversion.

U17 INTERNATIONAL

England had too much experience for Wales in an U17 friendly fixture at the Gnoll, the visitors winning 46-4.

They took an early lead when Mason Hunter forced his way over in the corner, converting his own try, but it took until ten minutes before half-time for them to score their second.

England were a lot stronger in the second half, York, and Hunter each registering their second touchdown.

Josh Williams claimed England’s fifth try, Will Steen goaling, Zach Dennett then crossing in the corner and, from kick-off, York completing his hat-trick.

Wales gained reward for their efforts with six minutes to go, Ben Foskett over between the posts and Elliott Williams landing the conversion, but England had the final say when Zac Law scored their eighth try.

Wales and England Community Lions emerged triumphant in the U16s and U18s Four Nations competitions respectively.

For Wales it was the third time in succession they have won the U16s title, beating England 18-0 in the deciding game at Halton Farnworth Hornets.

The margin of defeat meant that Ireland clinched second spot on points’ difference in the closest competition to date since the annual tournament was introduced in 2023.

“The players have worked very hard for six months to get to this point” noted Wales head coach Paul Berry.

“In the decider we were very good in the first twenty minutes before it became a scrappy game in the heat, but that’s the sign of a champion team that you can still come up with the win.”

A domestic quota was put in place and exceeded in all games with at least six home-produced players being involved in the matchday squads, demonstrating progression in all of the countries and a reduction in the reliance on heritage players.

Biennial U18s tournament

The biennial U18s tournament, which alternates with the European U19s championship, saw England go through undefeated.

“We saved our best performance to the end for the winner takes all game against Wales, keeping them to zero,” commented England coach, Gary Hewer.

England and Wales are more dominant at this age group owing to more developed domestic competition, but again the domestic quota was exceeded by all four nations.

“It is fantastic to see the U16s and U18s Four Nations Competitions continuing to flourish and improve in standard,” said IRL head of membership and competitions, David Butler.

“This year’s competitions have raised the bar in terms of standard and awareness, with all sides focussing their efforts on promoting the fixtures and increasing the coverage and we’ve seen some very healthy attendances at games.

We will review collectively over the next couple of months and start the planning again for next year.”

In front of over a thousand fans at The Lextan Gnoll in Neath, Wales U16 pulled off an outstanding win against England to clinch the U16 Four Nations unbeaten for a second year in a row.

The two sides came into the game completely level on competition points and points difference, so the form would have said that this would be an even game.

However, it was anything but.

Wales were only 12-0 up at half-time thanks to two converted tries but they had three more disallowed.

It was only early in the mid stages of the second half where Wales made a few errors and completion rate went down that there were a few concerns.

They finished well to seal a well-deserved win, and still remain unbeaten in the two years that this tournament has been held.

With the majority of the Welsh players coming from the successful junior set-up in South Wales, where well over 2,000 children have been playing rugby league this summer, the win is a credit to both club and international coaches.

England nearly took the lead in the seventh minute.

Archie Storr thought he’d grounded but the referee ruled it out for a double movement.

The home side got near to the line five minutes later, Ralf Roberts looked for a try, diving over but he’d received a forward pass.

The Welsh looked like they’d scored a stunning try when Isaac Holdworth flicked the ball back to Jake Sheppard for him to ground, but the referee called it back for a knock-on.

Wales again looked to have taken the lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Jayden Tyson was sinbinned for a high tackle on Ralf Roberts. From the next play, Morgan Marozzelli ran over but referee Rob Apsee called it back for a forward pass.

But when Wales got the ball back again

It was a fine passing move in the 27th minute that Elis Thomas finished off. Matthew Clatworthy converted well.

Only a dropped ball gave England an opportunity to score, but it was wasted – Bobby Dickinson’s grubber on the final tackle of the resulting set not being seen by any of his team-mates.

Again, when Wales got the ball back, they scored, and it only took them three tackles.

Sam Dickinson sprinted over 50 metres, placing the ball under the sticks making the kick easy for Clatworthy and giving Wales a well-deserved 12-0 lead at the break.

An error put England onto the attack early in the second half, but again couldn’t make their chances count.

Ellis Holliday attempted a try but his attempt at grounding was more akin to basketball and the try was ruled out.

England got a try back on 50 minutes after regaining possession through another Wales error and Travis Jack-Morse scoring in the corner.

Mason Bowes converted well.

Wales needed to tighten things up, and they did.

Jac Jones cleaned up some more England pressure and Wales turned defence into attack, producing a perfect set. Dickinson, Elis Thomas and Clatworthy were involved at the end, with Roberts scoring in the corner.

Clatworthy kicked the extras before adding a penalty a few minutes later to put the score on to 20-6.

The Welsh now needed to defend to keep their lead. After being penalised for off-side, they faced a set starting from their own 10 metre line.

On this occasion, they forced the England attackers into touch.

A dropped ball from Wales’ next set gave England another chance and this time they didn’t waste it as Jack-Morse scored his second of the game. Bowes couldn’t convert and Wales were still 10 points up with less than five minutes to go.

And Wales wrapped the game up with two minutes to go after England spilled the ball.

Dickinson didn’t let any English lads get in his way as he weaved through them to score. Clatworthy converted.

There was still time for Wales to put more icing on a very big cake.

Evan Williams sprinted past the tired English to score and Clatworthy goaled to cement their well-deserved large win.

England Community Lions U16s and U18s

England Community Lions have named extended train-on squads at Under-16s and Under-18s age groups as they prepare for a busy few months of internationals for both age groups.

The Under-16s have named 39 players, a number that will later be trimmed following a trial on 13th May and will take on Wales in Wales on 3rd June.

Before home internationals against Scotland (18th June), Ireland (2nd September) and Wales (16th September).

The players not selected from that trial game will still have a representative opportunity when a Lions Regional Selection take on a French Regional side in England during July.

England Community Lions U16’s suffer narrow defeat to Wales

Wales Under 16s made history for a second time in 2022 with a narrow victory over the England Community Lions Under 16s following a superb game at Ince Rose Bridge that also thrilled viewers on Ourleague.

The Lions came into the contest as slight underdogs following a 22-14 defeat to Wales in June, yet relished their task against an athletic side.

Defences were on top throughout with scoring chances at a premium.

There were hits aplenty and the intensity of the contest never dropped with all players giving their all.

Wales dominated territory for much of the first twenty-five minutes despite the trickery of Fletcher Holgate, the will of skipper Harvey Roberts, strong running from Tyler Jowitt, and an energetic start from Brandon Rowland.

It was also a big start from the visitors with starting props Lewis Jones and Troy Shearan making good ground, supported well by Ethan Paterson and Kaden Johnson.

England’s line speed was heroic, forcing numerous turnovers before Wales fashioned a couple of chances with Ethan Stebbings being tackled into touch and skipper Lloyd McEwan-Peters having an effort overturned for a double movement.

Finally, England had some field position and it was now Wales’s turn to show defensive steel in stopping sweeping attacks on both sides of the field including a superb tackle to deny Jamie Jennings as Harrison Dodd proved difficult to contain.

The pressure eventually told and it was England that opened the scoring after 34 minutes.

When Oliver Smart used a combination of footwork and strength to get over the line after a couple of Wales handling errors, and Tom Papworth goaled to give the hosts a 6-0 lead at the break.

The second half continued to be fiercely fought with England initially establishing the upper hand and Wales rearguard responding with some excellent clearing runs, particularly from Ryan Williams and Sam Grice.

Eventually, things switched around and Wales made their own pressure count when Jayden Grey was given the slightest opportunity from dummy half and plunged through for a score. Ethan Paterson goaled and later added a crucial penalty.

Again both teams traded chances with Wales’s best opportunity coming five minutes from time when McEwen-Peters kicked on and chased through only for Cobie McGillivary to get there first.

England attacked into the final seconds but couldn’t get close enough to the line and Wales celebrated victory in an excellent test match.

The Lions programme once again thanks all our volunteers for their service, in addition to all clubs, families, friends and players for their time and efforts.

The Under 16s finished with one win and two losses from their international games this season.

Twenty players from fourteen community clubs have fought their way through a strong selection process to be named in a squad to represent England Community Lions U16s over three games this year.

After three regional camps across Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Cumbria, the final selection was made following a trial game at Leigh Miners Rangers, Twist Lane ground last week.

Thornhill Trojans are well represented with three players while Newsome Panthers, Kells, Saddleworth Rangers, and Blackbrook Royals all have two players in the squad.

There was particular celebration for Moldgreen, represented by Cobie McGillivary, Westhoughton Lions, represented by Joseph Davies and Seth Abong of Hull Wyke.

Speaking of the selections and the process, Under 16s Head Coach Tom Wood said, “It was really difficult, to be honest with you.

On the day we took our notes, took it away, had a bit of a think and we had it videoed, so me and Lee Roberts watched it back, and we sent it to another couple of coaches and we’ve come back with this squad.”

“I know we’ve left some good kids out, and I’m really disappointed to leave them out, but hopefully they will come back bigger and stronger, and I’m really pleased with the group that we’ve got together.”

“The group is from 14 different community clubs which shows that all over the country good work is being done.

All the clubs should be really proud of what they produce. Everyone is there on merit.

They are all there because they deserve to be, and they’ve got through a few stages and fair play to those community coaches, they have brought through some good kids.”

“We’ve got three games with this squad now and they will be really tough.

I know from the experience of taking the under 17s to Wales last year, we won in the last couple of minutes, but they have improved dramatically down there.

The coaches Paul Berry and Liam Bostock are doing a really good job and doing a lot of stuff in South Wales too. That creates its own challenges.”

“Then Scotland, it will be the first time that they have had an under 16s.

They will be picking mainly Scottish lads and there will be a few professional lads who are on scholarships.

For our boys, who are all community-based to play against scholarship players, they have to put their best foot forward and it will be interesting.”

“We won’t be taking it lightly at all, it’s international rugby, it’s tough and pride is on the line playing for your country.”
