Jillaroos teammates to lock horns on NSWRL Grand Finals Day

Jillaroos World Cup-winning teammates Simaima Taufa and Kennedy Cherrington tomorrow will be on opposite sides of the field for the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval.

A massive day of action that will see premierships decided for five competitions.

Taufa, who has been a stalwart for Mounties, and Cherrington, who joined Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as a marquee player this season, were part of the starting side that trounced New Zealand 54-4 in the Women’s Rugby League World Cup Final last year.

Mounties finished the season in fourth spot but upset Minor Premiers North Sydney Bears 18-16 to secure their spot in the decider.

While the third-placed Bulldogs ground their way to a 16-8 win over the Illawarra Steelers.

Mounties has been one of the most consistent teams in the competition after winning the title in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2019, but Cherrington was confident the Bulldogs would be able to hold their own.

“They have some very strong props and forwards, but I think we can match them,” she said.

“I’m confident in my team. We know how good they are and we’re ready to match them.

“It will be a middles game early and then a battle of the backs. We’ll be ready.”

The Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership will be the final match at Leichhardt Oval, with the day kicking off with the decider for the Women’s Country Championships.

Followed by the Junior Representatives Grand Finals; UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s), UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s) and Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s).

The Women’s Country Championship will determine the best women’s team from regional NSW and will involve the two best teams from northern and southern NSW.

Newcastle Maitland Region Knights, who will be looking for their second title after winning the competition in 2021, will take on Monaro Colts.

Harold Matthews Cup

The UNE Harold Matthews Cup will feature the Newcastle Knights, who had the second-best record for attack and defence in the competition, against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Canterbury Bulldogs secured their spot from fourth place after upsetting the top-of-the-table Penrith Panthers.

The UNE SG Ball Cup will feature the fourth-placed Parramatta Eels, who knocked the No.1 team, Canberra Raiders, out of the finals, against the third-placed Newcastle Knights, who scored a hard-fought win over Penrith Panthers.

Tarsha Gale Cup

The Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup will be an absorbing contest with the two most dominant teams of the competition, Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs meeting for the first time.

The two teams did not come together during the regular season due to the nine-round draw for the 13-side competition and there is little separating them

The Bulldogs just edge the Roosters in attack, while the Roosters were slightly better than the Bulldogs defensively.

Fans can catch all the action from five Grand Finals for only $5 at the gate, while children 12 and under are free. All matches will also be live streamed on NSWRL TV on the NSWRL Facebook page.

The Grand Final results will impact on the representative teams for Country v City at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Thursday 4 May, Saturday 6-Sunday 7 May.

There will be eight games played over the three days including Women’s Open Age, Men’s Open Age, Under 16s, Under 18s, Women’s Under 17s, Women’s Under 19s, Wheelchair Rugby League and Physical Disability Rugby League.

Soliola stars as Dogs earn place in Grand Final

A Monalisa Soliola double has helped the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs into the 2023 Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final in their return season.

The Bulldogs, in their first NSW Women’s Premiership season since 2019, earned the victory in fine style with a 16-8 Semi-final win over the Illawarra Steelers Leichhardt Oval.

They exhibited plenty of grit after losing props Holli Wheeler (knee) and Angelina Teakaraanga Katoa (ankle), reducing them to 15 players for most of the second half.

They will now have to patch themselves up to face Mounties in next Saturday’s (29 April) Grand Final after they beat Minor Premiers North Sydney 18-16, in an equally tough contest in the earlier Semi-final.

“I’m proud of the girls because Holli has been our best player by a country mile, so to lose her and Ange and still come home with a win is massive,” said coach Craig Sandercock.

“They just showed that Bulldogs grit and determination. And I thought Monalisa really stood up in that second 35 minutes and really showed a what a terrific player she is.”

Soliola scored in the 38th and 59th minutes, taking a simple one-off-the-ruck pass and crashing through tacklers.

It meant a lot to both teams trying to make the decider in their first year. That determination led to some angst between players with several scuffles breaking out.

The Steelers won the penalty count 5-4 but it was one of the few statistics that went their way. Handling errors plagued them all afternoon.

“There was an essence of want and urgency that made them push things they wouldn’t necessarily push,” said Steelers coach Alicia-Kate Hawke.

“In terms of our completion rate, we’ve been up and down with that all season. So with a team that has such power like the Bulldogs you can’t win off poor set completions.

“Even after letting in that first try early in the second half we felt like we were breaking them down. But time just ran away from us,” Hawke said.

“The girls and their effort has been amazing to create such a culture in this Illawarra club. I’m super proud of that but what hurts most is that we know what could have been if we’d played our best footy.”

The match was level at 4-4 when the halftime whistle sounded.

Wingers Sarachen Oliver (Bulldogs) and Shakiah Tungai (Steelers) put points on the board early.

Soliola’s first try early in the second half and then a penalty to Tayla Preston put the Bulldogs out to 10-4.

Steelers halfback Rachael Pearson sent a low-trajectory kick to the right-hand corner in the 53rd minute, which winger Olivia Vale collected off one bounce to edge within two points (10-8).

But Soliola’s second four-pointer broke the Steelers hearts and despite several attacking raids upfield they couldn’t finish off those moves.

The Semi-finals of the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership on Sunday will help determine the make-up of the City-Country sides, who do battle in a fortnight, and ultimately the Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues Origin team.

NSW Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder plus Country coach Ruan Sims and City coach Kate Mullaly will be in the stands at Leichhardt Oval.

Sims and Mullaly were assistant Origin coaches last year and will be there again in 2023.

Hilder will not finalise her Origin team until after the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final on Saturday 29 April.

But there are Country-City jerseys to be decided before that, for the annual clash on Thursday 4 May at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah.

“We’ve been looking over personnel for those two teams for the past couple of months,” Hilder said.

“There are still six weeks to the opening Origin game so a lot can happen. Every player in this weekend’s Semi-finals should have that mindset that rep jerseys are on the line.”

The first Semi-final has the North Sydney Bears (1) against Mounties (4) after the women in red-and-black claimed the Minor Premiership for the second consecutive season last weekend.

“Both the Bears and Mounties are coming off wins in the final club round,” Hilder said.

“For me the Bears might be just ahead with the amount of experience and talent across the field.

Jillaroo and Sky Blue outside back Jess Sergis return to the centres for the Bears after she scored a hat-trick at fullback against South Sydney last week.

The halves combination of 2022 Origin five-eighth Kirra Dibb and current Dally M winner Raecene McGregor has grown strong for the final five rounds of the competition.

McGregor took over the No.7 role from Silver Ferns hooker Nita Maynard (pictured above).

“The forward pack is going really well too with Sarah Togatuki and Kalosipani Hopoate in great form,” Hilder said.

“In saying that, Mounties have gone into games and come out winners when few expected them to.

They have a tremendous fighting spirit coming from that go-forward by the props and back-rowers.

Blatcheys Blues – On Sale Now

“This will be a good physical game and I can easily see Mounties getting the upper hand in the middle, but the Bears outside backs should prove too strong.”

The second Semi-final has the Illawarra Steelers (2) up against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (3), where Sky Blue fullback Emma Tonegato will play another weekend at lock for Illawarra.

“I’m sure it’s to get the ball in Emma’s hands more often and the Steelers don’t lose anything with Teagan Berry at fullback,” Hilder said.

“She’s fast and will bring the ball back at speed. Steelers can utilise her running better at No.1.”

Hilder believes the match should swing on the ability of the halves to create the attacking raids.

Steelers’ Taliah Fuimaono and Rachael Pearson face the equally crafty Gayle Broughton and Tayla Preston.

“Steelers hooker Keeley Davis is also sure to get her middles to muscle up and going forward, and I understand Kezie Apps (leg) will undergo a fitness test closer to game day.

She would be an added bonus if she can play,” Hilder said.

“To be honest I can’t pick this one. They are evenly balanced sides so whoever turns up on Sunday to play good football should come out winners.

“The Bulldogs have a great forward pack with the likes of Holli Wheeler, Kennedy Cherrington and Monalisa Soliola and a great set of halves, while Illawarra also have rep halves and highly-talented outside backs.”

Both Semi-finals at 11am and 12.45pm will be live streamed on NSWRL TV.

HNWP Sharks season ends with heavy Knights loss

Cronulla Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s team had their hopes of finishing the season on a high note crushed by the Newcastle Knights on Saturday, when they were defeated 34-4 in their final game of the season.

Despite already being out of finals contention after a narrow two-point loss to the Steelers in Round 9, the Sharks were determined to make their trip up north worthwhile.

Things looked promising for the Shark’s early on, winger Zali Fay, securing the first four points in the opening minute of the match.

However, the home side were quick to respond, with fullback Tamika Upton slipping through Cronulla’s defensive line to score and conversion from Jesse Southwell from out wide saw the Sharks trailing by two points for much of the first half.

Yasmyn Clydesdale, was next to score for the opposition, taking advantage of a gap in the Shark’s defense and breaking the line virtually untouched, leaving Cronulla down by 8-points at half-time.

Ill-discipline and errors have been an ongoing theme for the Sharks women’s team this season, and unfortunately proved costly again in the second half of the game.

Despite the team’s efforts, both Upton and Clydesdale crossed for doubles, with the Shark’s struggling to gain quality field position against the Knight’s strong defence. A final try from the opposition’s dummy half sealed the win for the Knights.

The Sharks HNWP team finished the season in seventh position on the competition ladder with four wins and six losses.

The Sharks will now shift focus to the upcoming NRLW season and to signing and announcing their playing squad.

Quincy signs on as NRLW Shark #1

A local junior from the Cronulla Caringbah club, who won a Tarsha Gale Cup at the Sharks, before becoming an NSW Women’s Origin representative and an Indigenous All Stars captain.

Quincy Dodd has become the Sharks first official NRLW signing ahead of their inaugural season in the elite level women’s competition.

Dodd, who turns 23 tomorrow, has built up an impressive resume in the women’s game, with her signing, which is for the next three seasons and takes her through until at least the end of 2026.

Set to be the first of many as the Sharks build a squad to compete in the NRLW when the season kicks off in July.

Thrilled to have committed her immediate playing future to the club where her rugby league career kicked off.

While looking forward to what the upcoming season might bring for the Sharks, Dodd was also somewhat humbled by being the first Sharks announced signing.

“I’m very excited. I’ve always wanted to play for the Sharks (in the NRLW) and to be announced as the first signing is definitely an honour,” Dodd said.

“I’ve been talking to Tony (Herman) throughout the whole process, about building a team that can be as strong as it can possibly be, but it’s about having good people too.

“I think we have some great players coming to play with us, which is obviously good, but we have some good people here now and joining our team as well.”

A running, ball playing hooker who’s creativity can create havoc for opposition defences.

Sharks NRLW Head Coach Tony Herman was of the opinion Dodd was a player who sets an example as to what is possible when talent combines with hard work.

“Not only is Quincy someone who brings energy and enthusiasm

Qinncy is a team first player who is popular amongst the playing group.

She is a local girl who has come through our pathways and is an example to the young women in our system now and those who will be a part of it in the future,” Herman said.

Don’t miss out on seeing the gameLIVE this year

“From Development squads to Tarsha Gale, to NSW Origin, captained the Indigenous Team and now our inaugural NRLW team, it was important Quincy was our first announced signing to show others coming through what can be achieved,” he added.

Joining Herman as an Assistant Coach with the NRLW Sharks is women’s rugby league legend Ruan Sims who has coached Dodd while in charge of the club’s NSWRL Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team in 2023.

Dodd was a member of a Sharks side which beat the Newcastle Knights in the Tarsha Gale Grand Final in 2018 in her second season in the women’s pathways competition.

A year in which she became the first female player in the history of the Cronulla club to be named the prestigious Junior Representative Player of the Year award.

Her talents were recognised with selection in the NSW City squad, before becoming the 18th player for NSW that same year.

Two trips to New Guinea with the Prime Minister’s XIII followed, with Dodd then included in the NSW team for the annual Origin clash against Queensland in 2020.

With the Sharks missing out when initially applying for a license.

Dodd has played for the Roosters and Dragons in previous NRLW seasons and was this year the Indigenous captain for the annual All Stars match against the Maori team.

Also revealed at Dodd’s signing media event was a substantial sponsorship announcement with the Sharks major NRL partner Aramex to also be front of jersey partner for the Cronulla NRLW team.

Aramex will be joined by Minespec Parts and Shore Hire as major partners of the Sharks NRLW team.

The Sharks expect to make more NRLW signing announcements in the coming days and week ahead of the July kick-off to the season.
