Hunter Sports High get 1st win in Schoolboy Cup

Hunter Sports turned on a powerhouse defensive display to grab a nervy win over Bass High and record their first win of this year’s NRL Schoolboy Cup. RELIVE ALL THE ACTION.

Highlights: Bass Sports High School scored their first try of the tournament and took it right up to Hunter Sports High.

Hunter Sports High survived a scare from Bass High to record their first win of the NRL Schoolboy Cup with a 24-20 victory at Terry Lamb Complex.

In the end, the clock was Bass’s biggest enemy and, while both sides fought hard, it was Hunter’s defence that sealed the deal for the visitors.

“It’s really good, this is the most injuries we’ve had going into a game, most of our boys are still 15, 16 years old and to finally get a win it means a lot,” said Hunter fullback Jack Dodd.

Second-rower Jarred Williams started things off for Hunter when he crashed through the Bass defensive line in the third minute.

Minutes later, the hosts hit back when Louai Mohammed scored in the corner.

In a error-ridden first half, Hunter Sports class prevailed as Bass struggled to capitalise on early opportunities.

Mitchell Taotua beat two defenders and crashed over the tryline to give Bass the lead, but on the cusp of halftime Hunter responded through a Mason Forbes try to put them two points in front going into the break.

The locals needed to score the first try of the second half and came agonisingly close off the back of strong from Charles Afeki.

Bass’s early errors came back to bite them when Broden Konz scooped the ball out of dummy-half and scored for the visitors.

Maxwell Taotua couldn’t get Bass over the line.

Hunter’s five-eighth Lauchlyn Spicer was threatening the Bass line all day and was rewarded for his work after he kicked to a charging Kai Spruce-Conn, who dotted down.

Trailing 18-10, the locals needed an answer and found one through Fanafou Seve, who beat three defenders to the line.

But Hunter’s pressure was relentless, and it looked like they put the nail in the coffin when Spruce-Conn threw a cut-out pass to Harrison Sams, who scored in the corner.

When it all seemed over, Max Taotua kept his team in the contest scoring a crucial try to cut the lead down to four points.

Patrician Brothers Fairfield have surged into the NRL Schoolboy Cup quarter-finals undefeated, after overpowering All Saints College.

Patrician Brothers College Fairfield have stormed into the NRL Schoolboy Cup quarter-finals undefeated, after overpowering All Saints College Maitland 48-0 on Wednesday.

Fairfield proved too dangerous across the park, with nine players crashing over in the one-sided contest at New Era Stadium.

Captains Yeyha Ayache and Josh Alhazim lauded their side’s incredible team effort.

“We’ve been training hard, making sure we got our plays right, and it showed today … hopefully we can get the win in quarters,” Ayache said.

Alhazim added: “Our middles were awesome, for the last three games they have been.

“If we work through the middle, we can win games, and that’s what we did today, we worked through the middle and earned the right and then you can do all the fancy stuff out wide.”

Fairfield’s prop Jordan Miller was, again, formidable.

Not only was he the biggest kid on the field, but the 16-year-old created plenty of opportunities through strong carries and smart offloads. It’ll be exciting to see him in action for the CCC side at next week’s NSW School Championships.

Miller credited former NRL star Frank Pritchard, who is coaching Fairfield, and his recent Harold Matts season with the Magpies for helping him take his footy to another level in 2021.

“(Pritchard) was always a player you looked up to when you were younger. Now he’s a coach, it’s great, he’s always giving us little tips,” Miller said. “Our school is very much the underdogs, I’m grateful for where we are right now, hopefully we can keep pushing on.”

Eels Harold Matts stars Ayache and Alhazim both believe they have grown since their recent grand final loss to Manly.

“(My main takeaway was) keeping the fight, staying in the contest during the game, train hard and do those extras” Ayache said.

Alhazim added: “I learnt to show a bit more heart, work as a team. I really cherish the moment, be grateful, that’s what the whole team took from that grand final.”

It was a tough loss for Maitland, who were unable to replicate their brilliant performance in Round 2 of the competition

Fullback Jackson Ekerford busted his guts and pulled off a brilliant try-saver against Fairfield’s own no.1 Taj’h Colqunoun.

Halfback Fletcher Sharp and prop Nicholas Tuliatu also never gave up. But Fairfield proved too fast and strong, forcing Maitland to spend most of the match in defence.

Miller opened the scoring early, barging over a handful of opponents.

Five-eighth Chad Daniels followed suit, before putting his centre Sione Lolohea over on the left. Centre Perosi Papalii and Ayache then crossed and, thanks to great goal kicking by Colquhoun, Fairfield led 26-0 at half time.

Alhazim danced around defenders to cross in the second half, before his younger brother Matthew Alahazim notched a try of his own.

Four-pointers to Corey Akers and Sam Samani allowed Fairfield to secure their third consecutive NRL Schoolboy Cup victory.

Star fullback Cody Parry led St Gregory’s College to a big victory over Bass Sports High in the second round of the Schoolboy Cup. WATCH REPLAY

Watch a full replay as St Gregory’s High v Bass High.

A brilliant display from star fullback Cody Parry has led St Gregory’s College to a 22-0 victory over Bass Sports High in the second round of the Schoolboy Cup.

It was a wet weather slugfest, but the locals were too clean and ultimately too classy for Bass at a waterlogged Kirkham Oval on Thursday.

St Greg’s prop Cooper Cross said it was a great effort from his side in difficult conditions.

“The weather hindered our playing style but we got out there and got the job done.” Cross said.

Bass had plenty of possession early but failed to capitalise, and it didn’t take long for Parry to make them pay when he scored in the corner for the locals.

Liam Sutton made the sideline conversion look easy, nailing it in the pouring rain.

Parry made his presence felt again when he beat four Bass defenders and scoring his second.

Minutes later, the locals piled on more points on the back of a kick off the scrum which saw Parry win the footrace and offload to a charging Zakauri Clarke who scored in the corner.

The locals picked up where they left off after the break, keeping the pressure on and forcing dropouts while their supporting school crowd cheered on.

“We were hammering down on the whole attitude thing, and getting out there and playing in front of our school who were watching us and really pushed everyone on,” Cross said.

Powerhouse forward Clarke was again rewarded for his hard work when he scored off the back of a strong carry to extend the lead.

Bass’s deadliest brother combination Maxwell and Mitchell Taotua had solid games, but they couldn’t make an impression on the scoreboard.

Magpies Harold Matts star Thomas Fisher had no regard for his body, bravely putting himself on the line to save certain Bass tries.

Even when the game was in St Gregory’s hands, their never say die attitude and ability to defend their line set after set was inspiring.

Both sides fought hard, but in the end it was Parry and Fisher that steered their team home, St Gregory’s will face the also unbeaten St Dominic’s next week which is set to be a blockbuster.

“They’re a bit of a powerhouse in the competition, really keen to get out there and play against them.” Cross said.

Half Time : Westfields SHS 12 – 8 Patrician Brothers Blacktown

Patrician Brothers Blacktown prop Tevita Alatini channelled his NRL idol Moses Leota with a barnstorming performance in his side’s win against Westfields Sports High.

The 2020 Grand Final rematch lived up to the hype, with Westfield Sports High and Pats Blacktown playing out an epic Schoolboy Cup clash.

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have unleashed their own mini Moses Leota — and he’s just as damaging.

Big Tevita Alatini barged over to ice his school’s 24-16 win over Westfields Sports High School in Round 2 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup.

Alatini, a member of Penrith’s Harold Matts Cup side, was pleased with his side’s performance on Wednesday.

“Everyone worked hard. Our 10, John Sagaga, he’s always such a leader in our team,” Alatini said. “And Ethan Sanders, he completely controlled that game, like he always does.”

The prop said he tried to channel his NRL idol Leota in the big showdown at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

“I look up to Moses Leota, his energy, I try to bring that to my game,” Alatini said.

Patties’ halfback Sanders had a blinder, he scored a double, set up tries, defended well and put up a dirty torpedo.

Sagaga was also a handful, showing off what he has learnt from training with Penrith’s Jersey Flegg side. But don’t let the scoreboard fool you. It was a tough and tight contest.

Westfields led at halftime and they had a couple of good opportunities to catch up at the end.

Roy Quiroz-Mapusua and Cooper Sinclair were constant threats.

Halfback Lachlan Galvin was strong too, scoring his second try in his second NRL Schoolboy Cup match for Westfields.

“It was good to get another try. It’s been fun, I’ve always wanted to play,” Galvin said.

“We’ve got work to do. We’ve got to hold the ball more, be more disciplined in attack and defence. We need to give away less penalties.”

Patties’ fullback Wilson De Courcey opened the scoring, thanks to a slick offload from Pharrell Zimmerman.

Westfields responded with first-half tries to Galvin and forward Sam Tuivati.

Sanders was next to score, crossing off his own kick. Westfields led 12-8 at half time.

Second-half tries to Sanders, Nicholas and Alatini pushed Patties ahead and the boys from Blacktown were able to hold off a late Westfields surge.

Centre Quiroz-Mapusua was rewarded for his efforts with a late try, but it wasn’t enough and Patrician Brothers finished on top 24-16.

Heading into Round 3 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup, Westfields will play Endeavour Sports High, and Patrician Brothers Blacktown will take on The Hills Sports High.

St Dominic’s College showed their class with a ruthless performance against Hunter Sports High to maintain their perfect start in the NRL Schoolboy Cup. WATCH REPLAY

St Dominic’s were on another level against Hunter SHS, blasting their way to a 56-6 win.

The next generation of Penrith Panthers stars ran riot as St Dominic’s College out-muscled Hunter Sports High 56-6 in Round 2 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup.

Luke Hansen, Keagan Russell-Smith, Ryley Smith and Liam Ison formed a clinical spine and orchestrated St Dom’s second victory in the prestigious competition.

“It was good to have an away trip and come away with a pretty dominant win, makes the the bus ride back home a lot batter,” St Dom’s coach Kyle Churchill said.

“(Ison and Smith’s return) definitely helped, but I was probably more pleased with the way we played. We were humming better than we have been over the last couple of weeks in our school comp, you can see the confidence come back quick. Those senior players stepping up obviously help as well.”

Hunter SHS threw everything at their opponents and prop Kade Youlten always looked dangerous, but they simply couldn’t match it with the boys from Penrith.

St Dom’s forwards Mason Teague and Lachlan Whitehouse were formidable through the middle for and managed to tire the homeside early.

Undefeated St Dom’s will face their biggest test of the Cup in Round 3, when they take on a fierce St Gregory’s College side.

“Greg’s are probably going to be our biggest battle, they’re winning games in MCS, they’re always hard to beat in the Schoolboy Cup” Churchill said.

It took just three minutes for St Dom’s to strike. The visitors created an overlap out left that saw flyer Joshua Debritt stroll over to open the scoring.

Minutes later, the school’s right winger Bayley Brothwick touched down, cleaning up an awkward grubber courtesy of halfback Keagan Russell-Smith.

The No.7 crossed next, thanks to a brilliant line-break by fullback Liam Ison.

The courageous Hunter boys kept fighting and Youlten was eventually rewarded with a four-pointer of his own. But nothing could stop the barrage of St Dom’s tries as Baley Brothwick, Kobi Brothwick, Lachlan Blackburn, Lachlan Squires and Russell-Smith each crashed over in the second stanza.

Six weeks ago, Eels youngsters Ethan Sanders and Blaize Talagi lost the Harold Matthews Cup grand final to Manly in a heartbreaker.

On Wednesday, Parramatta’s slick halves will return to the field as Westfields SHS battle Patrician Brothers Blacktown in Round 2 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup.

But this time, Sanders and Talagi will run out against – not alongside – each other.

“I’ve taken a lot out of that grand final. I feel like I didn’t take control in that final as much as I should, that took it for granted a bit. I’ve learnt a lot from that,” Patties halfback Sanders said.

Patrician Brothers Blacktown player Ethan Sanders, the NRL Schoolboy Cup is starting back up and Patrician Brothers Blacktown are defending champions. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Sanders’ biggest challenge will be to outsmart his mate Talagi – a tough five-eighth, who played the first half of his junior representative season as a middle.

Westfields’ star Talagi can’t wait for the encounter.

“Going up against Ethan in the halves, and (Eels teammates) Myles Martin, it’ll be a good challenge for us, they’re good players,” Talagi said.

“I’m looking forward to it … our team’s looking good, we’ve come together well, got a few boys back from representative footy.”

Both Sanders and Talagi missed their Round 1 Schoolboy Cup clashes due to City v Country commitments.

Last year, Sanders was mentored by Jakob Arthur, who made his NRL debut less than one year after he led Patties to their NSW Schoolboy Cup title.

Sanders said that Arthur is an inspiration to current Patties students.

“He did a lot for me last year, giving me pointers, letting me fill in even though I was one of the younger boys, I’ve really looked up to Jake over the last few years,” he said.

“To see him go all the way through the ranks, to be playing NRL now, it puts a lot of confidence in me and the other boys that there’s no reason we couldn’t do the same, if we work hard and put in the effort he has.”

“Seeing how far (last year’s) boys have gone … Jakob and Sean Russell. Tito Turuva is playing NSW Cup for Penrith. Seeing how far those boys can go from playing school footy, it gives me confidence.

Sanders expects a big game from his middles Myles Martin and John Sagaga.

But stopping Westfields will be difficult – fullback Carson Kaho, second rower Jarvis Leafa and big Solomone Saukuru have the potential to be damaging.

Sanders is determined to give it his all and steer Patties to back-to-back Schoolboy Cup titles.

“Schoolboy footy means a lot, I’ve always wanted to play for school,” Sanders said.

“I was fortunate to play for school last year, to get another opportunity this year means everything.

“We want to back up what the boys did last year and to bring the Cup back to the school, because it means everything to the students and the school.”

St Dominic’s College has been told to ignore the hype as they take on Hunter Sports High in the Schoolboy Cup on Wednesday. Find out how to watch here.

Ignore the hype – that’s what St Dominic’s College coach Kyle Churchill has told his side ahead of Wednesday’s big Schoolboy Cup clash against Hunter Sports High.

Anyone in junior footy circles will tell you that St Dom’s are genuine contenders in 2021. But, after two recent defeats, the boys from Penrith got a much-needed wake up call.

“In our normal school competition, we’ve had a reality check over the last two weeks. We had some players out in both games, and lost to St Greg’s and Pats,” Churchill said.

“It was a leveller. There’s been a lot of noise about how good we are, and that we’re the team to beat this year. It’s good to get that noise out of our heads now.”

“We’ve set our own standards that we need to adhere to. We need to trust that process and not just listen to other people and all the hype.”

St Dom’s will be boosted by the inclusion of rising Penrith Panthers stars Ryley Smith, Liam Ison and Keagan Russell-Smith.

Smith, a hooker with exceptional kicking game, and Ison, an explosive and rangy fullback, both missed St Dom’s Round 1 victory.

Halfback Russell-Smith was key in the clash and, after a minor injury, should be fit to return for Round 2.

Churchill, who was also absent from Round 1 due to his City v Country coaching commitments, said he was proud of St Dom’s for winning without two key players.

“It was quite pleasing. I was in camp with Ryley… we knew how important it would be if we won without those two. We also knew how costly a loss would be. We were watching from the edge of our seats,” Churchill said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Keagan get back (on Wednesday), he’s been frustrated the last couple of weeks watching our school competition, probably seeing the lack of direction that we’ve had without him,

“And having Liam, Ryley and Keagan working together in the same side, we haven’t really had that this year.”

St Dom’s expect Hunter SHS to throw everything at them on Wednesday in Charlestown.

Knights SG Ball fullback Lachlan Fitzhenry – the son of Wests Tigers legend Daniel Fitzhenry – was dangerous in Hunter’s Round 1 clash against St Gregs. Workhorse Connor Cromarty will also be hard to stop.

Round 2 of the Schoolboy Cup match between All Saints College and Farrer MaHS was played at the Maitland Sports Ground today in nice sunny weather on a magnificent ground.

All Saints College 30 – 18 Farrer MAHS

After falling apart in Round 1 to Holy Cross College, All Saints came into Round 2 with a different attitude.

In an Interview with All Saints Coach Matt Lantry, when asked what was the difference between the 2 games, he said ‘ The difference between our performance last time and on this occasion was our actual belief that we could win the game when we got in the position to do so‘

Farrer came our hard in the 1st half with 5/8 Mitch Henderson leading the way with powerful runs up the middle and gave advantage to his running backs.

Farrer where 1st to get the ball across their oppositions line only to be pounced upon by All Saints centre Tyler Threadgate who was caught and gang tackled in goal, after the line drop out, Farrer had a new set of 6.

Good defence by the All Saints boys and an intercept saw the ball going the other ways with All Saints in control, they charged up the middle and in the same set sent the ball out wide and the helmet wearing Centre Sam Lantry dived over crashing through two defenders to open the scoring for his School.

Halfback Fletcher Sharpe duly converted 6 – 0

Both teams tried to out muscle each other for the next 10 minutes in the midddle of the Maitland Sports ground and All Saints regained their composure and some shape to see Fletcher Sharpe run 20 meters only to get smashed which resulted in a penalty.

All Saints choose to go for the 2 points, Sharpe kicked the penalty goal to lead 8 – 0.

Farrer kicked off again and didn’t get any of the footy when Sharpe scored this time on the grand stand side with desperate Farrer defenders trying to stop him as he muscled his way to dive over the try line.

The Sharpe conversion attempt missed 12 – 0

A couple sets to each school later and only less than 1/2 a minute in the 1st half, Farrer ran the ball through many hands to set up Mitch Henderson who was backing up and ran over the line to put Farrer on the scoreboard.

Henderson converted his own try after the half time siren to make the score 12 – 6 at the half.

It was a tough start to the 2nd half with both school playing up and down the field for the first 8 or 9 minutes, All Saints were attacking the Farrer line and ran into some solid D, all of a sudden All Saints sneaky Hooker Khynan Butler slides in next to the post to extend his schools lead by 4 points.

Again Sharpe converted the try to add the 2, 18 – 6

Both teams traded blows for a couple more set when All Saints fullback Jackson Eckford was too fast for everyone and run 40 meters to score and place the ball one handed under the black dot.

All Saints Students celebrate (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

Eckford causally turned around and celebrated with a spectacular back flip to the thrill of the large crowd of a couple 100 All Saints students who came from an Athletics carnival next door to the footy ground.

Sharpe again converted and added the 2 points to give his school a 24 – 6 lead

Again both schools tried to get the better of the other with the footy travelling all over the Maitland footy field, Farrer’s powerful Mitch Henderson tried a little grubber kick and followed the ball into the in goal to pounce on his own kick to score his 2nd try of this School Boy Cup match.

Henderson added the 2 points to bring his school back from the brink and give Farrer some chance with 15 minutes left on the clock Score 24 –  12.

Another 7 minutes of tough schoolboy footy the ball was passed to a flying Fletcher Sharpe who sprinted from the half way line to dive over and score under the posts untouched.

No exciting back flips from Sharpe, he casually played the footy on the T and converted another try to extend All Saints lead with only a few minutes to the final siren. 30 – 12

Again both schools played footy all over the Park, with 4 minutes to the bell, Farrer get the ball out wide to winger Jordan Whillock who ran from out wide to dive and score behind the black dot to give his kicker an easier shot at goal

Five/eight Henderson converted the try 30 – 18.
