Wales win fourth u16 four nations title

Wales remain unbeaten in the U16s Four Nations Championship, picking up their fourth successive title when they defeated England 30-10 in a winner-takes-all clash at the Gnoll in Neath.

Loose forward Rhys Wood led them to glory with two tries in a dominant second half, after the hosts led 10-4 at the break.

Wales U16s head coach, Tom Marsh, commented:

“It’s a brilliant result, England were really tough with their greater experience but our lads stuck to their task and dealt with it amazingly.

We give lads great opportunities and letting them see professional environments and they have really bought into it, they’ve been training since January and amazing all year.

“There’s a pathway there and the talent we’ve got in South Wales is fantastic.”

Wales took the lead in the seventh minute, prop Danny Jones creating a try for Max Phillips who dived over in the corner.

England levelled through winger Jaden Udegbe with the first of his two tries, spurning another opportunity soon after when spilling the ball diving for the line.

The hosts were back in front when stand off Jack Parrott cleverly offloaded to Leighton Clarke, Parrott converting with the first of his three goals.

Wales started the second period impressively, Alfie Davies and Mason Lewis crossing in quick succession, Wood then claiming his brace.

The only black mark for the Welsh were two dismissals, Danny Jones with his second red card of the tournament for a head butt and, after the final whistle, Cyrus Owen-Green shown one for striking.

Their U16s extended their unbeaten run to ten matches with a 64-20 win, the Students triumphing 50-0.

The second half was one-way traffic, second rower Eatly superb, while Frazer Redman, Jacob Maund, Scott Hewitt and Nottingham again also went over.

Wales U16s head coach, Tom Marsh, said: “There was some high-quality rugby on display from both teams.

Ireland built momentum well in the first half, in the second, we started to play more to our game plan and completed our sets much better.

“It was also really encouraging to see the continued development of the game in Ireland, with 12 Irish-born players included in their squad.”

Wales students were dominant throughout, skipper, centre Mason Phillips leading the way with four successive touchdowns as the visitors built a 24-0 half time lead.

Wales posted another five tries, including one each from debutants Olly Darlington and Kian Lloyd in the second forty.

“Preventing a never-say-die Ireland from scoring was a great achievement in warm conditions in Dublin,” noted Wales students head coach, Clive Griffiths.

“We now turn our attention to Scotland at Merthyr on Sunday, 7 June. We’re not going to underestimate them as they always give us a competitive match.”

Ireland pathways coach, Wayne Kerr, noted: “It was a tough day for the lads. We had a few out there that hadn’t played league before and it was the team’s first hit out together.

We started well and completed high which was a goal for the team.

“The biggest positive was that the lads never gave up and kept competing for the full 80 minutes, that’s something to bring forward for the rest of the tournament.”

U16 four nations fixtures confirmed

Wales begin their defence of the U16s Four Nations with a trip to Dubin on Saturday 23 May.

All the matches are paired with the Student Four Nations tournament.

“Our Wales U16s team have been working hard and will be aiming to retain their fourth consecutive title,” said Wales RL performance director, Clive Griffiths.

“We will be looking to maximise home advantage with two home games in this year’s competition and we look forward to welcoming big crowds to the games.”

The second round of games take place on Saturday 6 June as England welcome Ireland to Halton Farnworth Hornets while Scotland make the long trip to Merthyr Tydfil the following day.

England Lions programme manager, Alan Davidson, noted: “We will once again take part in the U16s competition with the England Lions team which means that no scholarship or academy players will be eligible for the side.

Giving those young men outside of the professional game the opportunity to showcase their talents and represent their country.”

The action concludes on Saturday 20 June as Ireland visit Hawick to face Scotland, and Wales welcome England to The Gnoll in Neath for what has previously been the deciding game.

“We’re very pleased that our Pathways Programme has again produced more Ireland based players competing than ever before in our U16’s squad, all are looking forward to impressing,” said IRL chair Jim Reynolds.

Barry McGuffog, Scotland RL operations director, added: “The number of Scotland-based players at U16s continues to grow year on year, we’re hoping to progress that into some form of domestic fixtures in 2026.”

England, Scotland and Wales also combining to stage U17s matches, although these will be considered friendlies and not part of a formal competition, making their clashes tripleheaders.

Pairing the competitions also highlights the youth international pathway in place which, from 2027, will also include the biennial U18s Four Nations games.

A try from Ryan Wood with four minutes left on the clock broke Welsh hearts in their first ever match at U17 level.

England won the encounter 16-10, but there was very little between the sides in an exciting contest played in good spirits throughout.

It was a battle royale throughout the game with two very well drilled defences.

Wales have an official link with Salford Red Devils and this excellent performance from many individuals will certainly give their scouts a lot to look at.

After some good defending by Wales in the first ten minutes, they took the lead through a good run and break through by Harri Ackerman. Billy Walkley couldn’t convert.

England levelled on 26 minutes after Jay Richards twisted and turned to get past the Wales line and ground. Connor Gannon’s goal attempt was swept past the posts by the famous Bae Colwyn wind.

Wales looked to regain their lead, but tough English defence continued to keep them out and the scores were still level at 4-4 at the break.

England struck first in the second half after Evan Stephenson sold a dummy and scored. Gannon converted.

Wales replied on 54 minutes after Scott Pritchard leaped onto a grubber kick to score under the posts. Walkely converted to level the scores up at 10-10.

But it was England who won though after skipper Ryan Wood showed his skill be running through the Welsh defence to score under the posts. Gannon easily converted.

Both sides could have scored again in the last few minutes but, as they had been pretty much throughout the encounter, defences ruled.

Wales hosted England under 16 and under 17 internationals, played as a double header at Stadiwm ZipWorld in Colwyn Bay.

The future stars of the game in England and Wales put on a show over two youth internationals.

While England were to walk away with two wins, they were not easy wins as the young Welsh players went on toe to toe in front of more than 700 people.

A try from Ryan Wood with four minutes left on the clock broke Welsh hearts in their first ever match at under 17 level.

Meanwhile, England Lions U16s won a hard-fought encounter with Wales 34-18 in Colwyn Bay on Sunday with the result in doubt right up until the last five minutes.

Wales, with a number of their players signing up for the official Wales Rugby League academy in Coleg y Cymoedd for September, gave a good account of themselves for much of the game, but in the end England’s experience took them over the line.

England took under a minute to take the lead after Wales made an error in the first set. Michael Sowden picked up the loose ball and Jayden Billy touched down from the resulting set. Oliver Whitford converted.

Wales hit back after seven minutes. Josh Hanson was the eventual scorer after two players were centimetres short in their attempts to get over the line. Isaac Morgan sliced the kick wide.

England regained the lead on 23 minutes when after a well-worked set, Billy notched his second, scoring near to the corner. Whitford missed the conversion attempt so England held just a converted-try lead.

But five minutes later, the visitor increased their advantage after Ellis Welburn completed a good passing move to ground.

Whitford’s conversion attempt hit the post.

Wales were close to pulling a try back before the break but Morgan Farmer-Gratton and Isaac Morgan were both held up over the line, leaving the half-time score at 14-4 to England.

Wales were first over the line in the second half, attacking from the off, and were rewarded when Ben Morris twisted his way over the line. Isaac Morgan’s conversion attempt slipped under the bar.

England regained their ten point lead when Scott Egan scored in the corner five minutes later in another try that went unconverted.

Wales hit back again through the try of the game when Isaac Morgan broke free on the wing and sprinted 40 metres to ground under the sticks. He converted his own try to leave Wales just four points behind.

But England were next to score when Jack Edge dived over in the corner. Sonny Cooper converted well from the touchline to give England their ten-point lead back.

A well worked try for Wales was next, with Farmer-Gratton the scorer and Morgan unable to convert.

But England sealed the game three minutes from the end when Ryan Joseph picked up an Edge pass to score in the corner. Cooper converted well.

Egan put the icing on the cake with a try in the final move of the game.
