SG Ball Cup

The Raiders SG Ball side continued their strong start to the season with a 38-28 win over the Sydney Roosters at Henson Park on Saturday.

The Raiders lead 32-6 at half-time before the Roosters staged a second half comeback, but it wasn’t enough as the Raiders held on for victory.

It was a fast start from the visitors, with tries to Jacob Iosefa, Owen Pattie and Samuel Gash giving the Raiders an 18-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Roosters hit back with a try but the Raiders were able to bounce straight back with a try to halfback Jalen Afamasaga.

Iosefa then got his second try of the day for the Raiders, before fullback Chevy Stewart scored just before half-time to give his side a 32-6 lead at the break.

The Raiders started the second half right where they left off, with second rower Noah Martin scoring and Samuel Gash successfully converting to give the green machine a 38-6 lead.

From there it was all the Roosters, with the home side running in four straight tries to get within 10 points of the Raiders.

The Raiders travel to 4 Pines Park in Sydney next weekend to take on the Sea Eagles.

Both sides then went on to exchange tries for the rest of the first half, with the Raiders going into the half-time break leading 18-12.

Brock Apolevski opened the scoring in the second half for the Raiders, with Braydan Darmody converting to give Canberra a 24-12 lead.

St George Dragons have continued their giant-killing form in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup after scoring a convincing 30-4 win over Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy in the Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval today.

The Roosters took a 4-0 lead after only three minutes but it was all the Dragons from that point on with Reuben Cherrington finishing the match with a double.

There was even more cause for celebration for the Dragons at fulltime after Rayven-Jodeci Boyce was named Player of the Match while Fatafehi Hanisi was named Player of the Series.

“First I’d like to shout out to the Roosters,” Jodeci-Boyce said.

“You’ve been winning the whole season, we were terrified versing you.

“Thank you to all my family, I definitely wouldn’t have made it without you.”

The Dragons had finished the season in fifth position but took plenty of confidence into the decider after comfortably beating minor premiers Newcastle Knights last week.

The Roosters had also been in good touch heading into the game after finishing the season in third position and beating Illawarra last week.

Roosters backrower Otesa Pule has been in great form for the tricolours this season and she put her team on the front foot early after breaking through the defence to charge upfield.

Pule was eventually cut down by the Dragons defence but the damage was done with prop Keilee Joseph crashing over the line a short time later to put the Roosters up 4-0.

From that point on it was all the Dragons.

A Roosters turnover from the kick-off put the Red V on the attack and a sublime long pass from Luisa Yaranamua gave centre Rosemarie Beckett enough time and space to step back infield to score. Stella Tijou added the extras to put St George in front 6-4.

The Dragons received another attacking opportunity when a scrum was packed 10 metres out from the Roosters line and fullback Cassey Tohi-Hiku showed blistering accelerating to sprint across field before straightening up and bursting through the goal-line defence to crash her way over the line.

Tijou missed the conversion but St George was on top at 10-4.

The Dragons finished the opening half with another try after stretching the Roosters defence wide before backrower Katarina Raravula put Rayven-Jodeci Boyce over the line for a 14-4 halftime lead.

The Roosters started the second half with plenty of intent but couldn’t convert that into points and the road back got a little harder after Yaranamua dummied before dragging three players over the line.

Tijou added the extra to put the Dragons up 20-4.

The Roosters never gave up and showed great determination to chase down Tijou and pull her down just short of the line after she seemed certain to score in one of the highlights of the second half.

The Dragons were unable to take advantage of the momentum but halfback Reuben Cherrington added a double in the final 10 minutes to help extend the lead to 30-4 and ensure it was a day of celebration for the Red V.

There will be three premiers decided in Junior Representative competitions this weekend, a top four spot will be on the line in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup and there will be another Monday night blockbuster in the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership.

The Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale season comes to a head with the Grand Final between the third-placed Roosters and fifth-placed Dragons at 11am, the UNE Harold Matthews decider between the two best teams this year in minor premiers Manly and the second-placed Eels will follow at 1pm, while the UNE SG Ball Grand Final between the fourth-placed Canberra Raiders and the sixth-placed Illawarra Steelers will round the afternoon off at 3pm with all matches at the iconic Leichhardt Oval.

Other games being streamed on NSWRL-TV are the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup game between Mounties and Eels at Aubrey Keech Reserve at 3pm on Sunday; and the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership match between the North Sydney Bears and Cabramatta Two Blues at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence at 7pm on Monday night.

Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup

The St George Dragons will take plenty of confidence into the Grand Final against Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy after beating Minor Premiers Newcastle Knights 26-10 in a Semi-Final last week while the Roosters booked their spot after beating Illawarra Steelers 22-4 in the other Semi-Final.

The only time the two sides met this season saw the Roosters enjoy a 48-8 win in Round Six but St George have improved considerably since then.

The Dragons scored three tries in the opening 10 minutes against the Knights to surge to a 14-0 lead before winger Courageous Afoa bagged a double to help seal the result.

The Roosters were just as impressive against the Steelers after surging to a 22-0 lead with winger Charlize Lloyd-Phillips grabbing the first two tries.

UNE Harold Matthews Cup

The Sea Eagles are looking to make a clean sweep of the 2021 season by remaining unbeaten in today’s Grand Final which would take their tally to 10 consecutive wins.

The strength of their run has a lot to do with the form of captain Josh Feledy, who has scored in eight of their previous nine games including six tries in the Round Six 40-0 win over Newcastle Knights. He has maintained his form since then after scoring a brace in his past three games.

The Eels lost 22-14 to Manly in Round One but haven’t looked back since then with fullback Patrick Spence and halfback Ethan Sanders starring after sharing a combined 11 tries between them.

UNE SG Ball Cup

The Raiders and the Steelers are proud clubs who are enjoying their 40th season in the SG Ball Cup but this is only the second time they have met in a Grand Final in the Under 19s competition.

The Raiders took the spoils the first time around after winning the 2005 decider 34-12 and beat the Steelers 36-10 in Round Three this year.

They finished the regular season in fourth position but boast one of the best attacks in the competition with skipper Clay Webb, Deakin Bright, Michael Asomua and Josh Billing all scoring hat-tricks across three games in 2021.

The Steelers won the SG Ball Cup in 2019 and have finished the season in strong fashion after piling on 40 points or more in their past three matches. Winger Alexander Lobb was on song with the boot in their 42-32 win over the Roosters after landing seven goals from as many attempts.

SG Ball Cup Grand Final, Full Results & Player Stat’s

Knock-On Effect NSW Cup

Mounties will be keen to bounce back from the loss to the Jets last weekend, when they host the Eels at Aubrey Keech Reserve on Sunday.

The Eels are in fourth position but Mounties could leapfrog them with a victory. Mounties are searching for some consistency having enjoyed just one win in the past four games, and will welcome back five-eighth Lachlan Lewis who has been sidelined with concussion.

The Eels are coming off a strong 38-20 win over the Rabbitohs last week and will be eager to make it back-to-back victories to stay in touch with the top four.

Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership

The Bears want to back-up their strong showing in last week’s 14-6 win over the Helensburgh Tigers when they face the luckless Cabramatta on Monday. The Two Blues are still searching for a maiden win this season.

All the headlines from a bumper weekend of semi-final football in the NSWRL’s junior representative competitions.

Dragons upset Minor Premiers to advance through to Grand Final

The fifth-placed St George Dragons have pulled off an incredible upset after defeating Minor Premiers Newcastle Knights 26-10 in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Semi-Final.

The Dragons set the tone early after running in three unanswered tries in the first 10 minutes through Ryshe Faamausili, Stella Tijou and Reuben Cherrington.

Newcastle hit back soon after with back-to-back tries coming through Tori Brazier and Kasey Gaukroger. Tylah Vallance converted one from two to bring her side within striking distance at 14-10.

From there, it was all the Dragons as they ran in three more first half tries as Courageous Afoa bagged herself a double and Reuben Cherrington scored her second for the day.

After an all-out attacking half of footy, defence was clearly the focus for the second half as neither side scored another point for the match, bringing the final score to 26-10 and ending what was a promising season for the Knights.

Sydney Roosters book spot in the big dance

The second Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Semi-Final saw Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy comfortably defeat Illawarra Steelers 22-4 at H.E. Laybutt Field in Sydney.

A first half double to Roosters winger Charlize Lloyd-Phillips and a try to Ruby Smith saw the Roosters lead 12-0 heading into halftime.

It was much of the same at the start of the second half as the Zoe Cass and Keilee Joseph both ran in tries to give the Chooks an unassailable 20-0 lead. Smith was successful with a penalty goal in the 41st minute and the game looked out of reach for the second-placed Steelers.

Determined not to be held scoreless, Steelers winger Annabel McDonald crashed over with two minutes remaining bringing the final score to 22-4 and securing a Dragons vs Roosters Grand Final next weekend.

Eels win low scoring battle of the west

Parramatta Eels have secured their spot in the UNE Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final after defeating arch-rivals Penrith Panthers 14-6 at H.E. Laybutt Field in Sydney.

Suliasi Aho opened the Eels account after just six minutes although the Panthers hit right back through Billy Scott. With both kickers failing to convert, scores were locked at 4-4 heading into halftime.

Despite the Panthers best defensive efforts, the Eels scored tries in quick succession through Joshua Alhazim and Yehya Ayache in the 40th and 47th minutes.

Ethan Sanders missed both conversions although he had a chance to redeem himself in the 48th minute off the back of a penalty, and this time he wouldn’t be denied, bringing the final score to 14-6.

With the Grand Final being played at Bankwest Stadium, the Eels will be feeling very confident as they take on Minor Premiers Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

Undefeated Sea Eagles fly high in Semi-Final

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have continued their unbeaten 2021 season after defeating Western Suburbs Magpies 32-12 in the UNE Harold Matthews Cup Semi-Final at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney.

Sea Eagles winger Eli Sagala opened their account after only six minutes and TJ Herring’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

The two sides went back and forth, and it was Solomone Saukuru who cracked the game open in the 18th minute. Soon after, the Magpies found themselves in front after winger Ofele Lene crashed over in the 22nd minute.

With the Magpies in the lead, the Sea Eagles proved why they are the competition benchmark after a four-pointer to Latu Fainu opened the flood gates. The Sea Eagles ran in four more unanswered tries stretching their lead out to 32-8 after 48 minutes.

The Magpies would have the final say of the game through Faaletino Tavana who went over in the 53rd minute bringing the final score to 32-12 and locking in a Sea Eagles vs Eels Grand Final next weekend.

Penalty goal helps Raiders edge out Sea Eagles

Canberra Raiders have booked their spot in the UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final with a 20-18 victory over Manly Warringah Sea Eagles on Saturday.

With the Raiders finishing the season as the most potent attacking side in the competition, and the Sea Eagles finishing as the best defensive side, the first Semi-Final proved to be an entertaining one.

The green machine certainly lived up to their regular season form and came out firing, piling on all of their three tries in just nine minutes. Mitchell Spencer was able to convert all three and the Sea Eagles soon found themselves down 18-0.

It was uncharacteristic of the Sea Eagles although they showed plenty of fight to claw their way back into the game. Daniel O’Donnell crashed over in the 14th minute and Jamie Humphreys converted to bring them within 12 points.

Mitchell Spencer kicked a penalty goal in the 24th minute in what would be the Raiders’ final points of the match.

Manly hooker Daniel O’Donnell bagged himself a double 10 minutes later and Humphreys converted to bring the score to 20-12 at halftime.

Defence was impressive from both sides in the second half with only Manly scoring through fullback Kaeo Weekes, after he was able to capitalise on a quick play the ball by throwing a dummy and crashing over on the left edge.

Humphreys again converted to make the score 20-18, and there would be no further points scored in the second half as Canberra made their way through to next week’s Grand Final.

Steelers edge closer to Premiership glory after defeating Roosters in points fest

Illawarra Steelers have defeated Sydney Roosters 42-32 to book a spot in the UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final next weekend.

The Roosters opened the scoring at H.E. Laybutt Field through winger Kyron Fekitoa after seven minutes. With the Roosters in the lead, the Steelers began to wrestle back momentum as they piled on four unanswered tries. The Roosters hit back through Jordan Swann who brought the score to 24-10 at the break.

Fekitoa and Steelers five-eighth Junior Amone both scored hat-tricks for the match and further tries to Corey Ross, Ethan King from the Roosters and Tyrell Sloane for the Steelers kept the scoreboard ticking over.

With plenty of exciting footy on show from both sides, it was the goal kicking of Alexander Lobb from the Steelers, who kicked seven from seven, which helped push his side out to a 10-point lead.

Illawarra Steelers will now face off against Canberra Raiders in next week’s Grand Final.
