England women too powerful

A powerful performance by a new-look England women’s side saw them run in eleven tries to defeat Wales 62-0 at the Lextan Gnoll, Neath.

Four of their six debutants were on the scoresheet, player of the match, Wigan teenager Isabel Rowe, landing 22 points from a try and nine goals.

This fixture is really important,” said England women’s head coach Stuart Barrow.

“Wales were really good, and it gave me the opportunity to give out more caps who all performed well, while the leadership of Jodie Cunningham was really important.

Our player pool is developing and competition is getting better. Our aim is to close the gap before the World Cup.”

The visitors, rebuilding after their shellacking against the Jillaroos in Las Vegas in March, led 22-0 at the break, first time starters Jenna Foubister – from a kick by Rowe.

Another debutant, Eva Hunter crossed twice in the second period as England’s superior fitness told late on, all their player coming from Super League.

Anna Davies – who scored five times when England earned their biggest-ever win against Wales at Headingley last November – also crossed twice, Bella Sykes going over for her first try in the national colours.

“I probably wasn’t the happiest with my performance the first half, but for the second I just told myself to enjoy it.

I’m playing with some amazing girls so that made my job really easy,” said 18-year-old Rowe.

“Everyone wants to play in a World Cup for England, there’s a lot of competition and I’m really looking forward to doing all that I can to get on that plane.”

Wales, who beat Scotland the week before, showed distinct improvement from their last time out against England as they build for appearing in their first Women’s World Cup next year, going close on a number of occasions, Charlie Munday with their best chance, just halted by a fine try saving tackle from Grace Banks.

Wales women’s head coach, Tom Brindle, commented:

“Our metric wasn’t the scoreline, we set some challenges on ourselves and part of that was we wanted to own our version of that game and I think we did, we competed for as long as we could, the effort and commitment for the badge never faltered.

“We’ve learned a lot and got to get fitter, faster, stronger, but where we are at the moment, they’ve done everything to their absolute maximum. I can’t ask for more.”

England Women defeat France – France Women 4-40 England Women

Captain Emily Rudge scored a try in each half as England recorded a 40-4 victory over France in Perpignan.

After a scrappy opening, the visitors seized control of the Test match with three tries in the last 15 minutes of the first half through centre Amy Hardcastle, substitute Paige Travis and second rower Rudge.

Stand-off Jodie Cunningham, the Betfred Super League’s Women of Steel, took a return pass from Rudge within a minute of the re-start to extend the lead.

The hosts began to tire and Rudge, making a record 24th appearance for her country, claimed her second try of the contest.

Hooker Tara Jones and winger Caitlin Beevers added further scores before France got on the board in the closing stages through Melanie Bianchini’s try.

Tara Stanley kicked five goals and Beth Stott added another in a comprehensive victory for England.

Head coach Craig Richards told BBC Two: “I don’t know about comfortable, it didn’t look it sat up there, but I will never knock my team in terms of energy, grit and a performance we should be proud of, especially in defence.

“A few things in attack we can work on, but I will never fault that team.”

England Women earned an emphatic 60-0 victory over Wales in their first international outing since 2019 at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.

There were ten different scorers for Craig Richards’ side with Captain Emily Rudge notching a double. International debutants Fran Goldthorp and Hollie Dodd also found themselves on the scoresheet.

Carrie Roberts – making her first international appearance since 2015 – opened the scoring for the hosts after just two minutes however Wales would keep England from adding to their early score until midway through the first half.

Tara Jones would eventually capitalise on a Welsh mistake before St Helens teammate Jodie Cunningham powered her way over. Shona Hoyle would complete a run of three tries inside six minutes for England.

With nine minutes remaining in the first half, Leeds winger Goldthorp would score out wide after going close earlier in the evening. Georgia Roche rounded off the first half scoring under the posts to give Richards’ side a 34-0 lead at the interval.

Rudge sliced through the Welsh defence just seconds after the break to continue where England left off prior to half-time. Caitlin Beevers followed with a try on the 50-minute mark.

Georgia Wilson entered the fray for the final 20 minutes and found her herself on the receiving end of a looping pass before Rudge doubled her account for the evening.

Castleford Tigers youngster Hollie Dodd finished the scoring with some neat footwork just before the full-time hooter.
