Sharks secure NSW Plate Wheelchair premiership

The Sharks have been crowned the 2025 Wheelchair Rugby League NSW Plate premiers after a clinical 30-12 victory over the Bulldogs in Sunday’s grand final at Menai Indoor Sports Centre.

After falling short in four straight deciders, the Cronulla team secured a long-awaited title in dominant fashion by going through the competition undefeated.

Liam Moar bagged an important double for the Sharks, with captain Dan Friedrich – playing against his older brother Jacob – also etching his name on the scoresheet alongside Finn Moar and Louis Richards in a classy performance.

Friedrich received the coveted Spirit of the Game award.

Sharks Wheelchair coach Liam Luff, himself a Wheelaroos representative, was delighted with his team’s ability to execute when it counted.

“For this young team, who we’ve had for a long time, it means the world to finally get the big one,” Luff told Our Footy Team after the match.

Coach Liam Luff and captain Daniel Friedrich.

“The whole season they’ve been building and chasing this, so they’ve got the job done and I’m incredibly proud of them. You didn’t want to say the words ‘perfect season’, but they pulled it off in the end! It’s been an incredible year.

“Some of the players are still 13, 14 (years old). With more experience and maturity on them, we’ve got a club coming in. Incredibly proud of the progress our young stars made and the guidance that our veterans showed them all the way

“The first of many (premierships) for some of these future Wheelaroos.”

Vinh Tran, Sharks Head of Community and Government Relations, offered his congratulations after cheering the team to victory from the sideline.

“The club is extremely proud of our Wheelchair Rugby League team’s efforts – to complete an undefeated season is a remarkable achievement,” Tran said.

“Wheelchair Rugby League shows the power of inclusion and innovation. We’re honoured to support the code and help provide a platform for amazing athletes.”

NSW Wheelchair Rugby League team ready for Origin firestorm

Bring in the hostile crowd – the NSW Wheelchair Rugby League team is ready to take the heat.

The Blues head to Townsville in north Queensland this Saturday for the 2022 State of Origin match and they know they’re heading into a firestorm.

That’s partially because of the 22-12 win by Queensland against the Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues in Game Three of the Ampol State of Origin series at Suncorp Stadium on 13 July.

“The social media since Wednesday night’s Origin win has been massive – ‘If the Queenslanders can do it with a big home crowd then let’s get that for the wheelchair guys too’ – that’s what they’ve been saying,” NSW co-captain Brad Grove said.

“The Queenslanders are already whipping things up. They want a big crowd up there and it sounds like they’ve got it.

“We know what we’re going into. Some of the newer guys might find it a bit tough but it’s a mindset thing – zone it all out and do the job.”

His co-captain and fellow Wheelaroo Craig Cannane said the six Australian members in the NSW Origin side, who have been named for World Cup squad later this year, will receive valuable preparation in Townsville for dealing with hostile fans.

“I told my guys to watch the Origin game at Suncorp Stadium and you’ll see how the players react and lift to the crowd,” Cannane said.

“We’ll be in the same boat – most of the crowd yelling for them.

“And we need to get used to that because our first game in the World Cup is against England – it’s sold out already and no-one will be cheering for us.

“As players we need to deal with that – it’s a challenge.”

The other challenge is more obvious – win back the Origin shield which the Queenslanders claimed in January with a 50-30 victory in Sydney.

“We have to play for 80 minutes,” Cannane said.

“We went try-for-try for 50 minutes last time and then dropped off.

“Queensland stepped up then and they will do it again, so we have to shut down that momentum this time by playing strong defence.

“If we do that then we’re capable of a lot of points ourselves.”

Grove said the NSW side was better prepared for Townsville.

“We’ve had the chance to prepare a bit more together this time around with no lockdowns,” Grove said.

“All the boys have done their fitness stuff, practised hard, so we’ve done pretty much everything we should have done.

“We’ve had the local club comp, then City-Country so we’ve all had far more time in the chairs. I’m more confident this time.

“There’s nothing much we needed to change – just be more prepared, and we are.”

Wheelchair Rugby League is played over two 40-minute halves, with the same points scoring as the running game. The ‘field of play’ is 50-metres in length and 25-metres wide, across three indoor basketball courts.

Rules are similar – players must pass backwards, possession changes after six tackles. A ‘tackle’ is made by ripping off the Velcro shoulder tag of an opposition player, similar to Monarch Blues Tag.

Kicks downfield, conversions, penalties and field goals are hand-punted. A play-the-ball is made by tapping the football on the ground before passing.

Queensland proved too strong for NSW with a dominating 50-30 win in the Wheelchair State of Origin match in Sydney today, recording their first win of the interstate series.

For eight years the Blues overwhelmed the Maroons playing for a Challenge Cup.

But in 2019 the State of Origin concept was born. NSW won it 52-4 before the Covid pandemic shut down the 2020 and 2021 scheduled games.

Today’s match was the postponed 2021 game from last June, and with Queensland’s win it is now 1-1 on the Origin stage.

“Our guys are feeling it. Congratulations to Queensland because they outplayed us (on Saturday).

It’s back to the drawing board,” said NSW coach Edie George.

Maroons our score blues

Queensland 2022 Champions Wheelchair Rugby League State of Origin team (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

And on that board will be an emphasis on defence, since the Maroons scored nine tries to the Blues five at the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Liverpool.

“We put more emphasis on attack than defensively and that showed. We didn’t read their plays well enough,” George said.

“We needed to hold them out and we didn’t.

They were camped in our red zone on the back of our own penalties and silly mistakes.”

NSW co-captain Craig Cannane said the Queenslanders were a more cohesive and aggressive unit.

“That two-year gap hurt us. Queensland haven’t been totally locked down so they’ve been able to get together and keep on working and keep their competitions going,” Cannane said.

“Across the field they were conditioned better than us. We’ve got to put in more hard work and get our fitness back to what it was before.

“They were fitter and stronger across the whole field. That’s what we’ve got to do,” he said.

“That result will burn a bit for the next six months but we’ve got the NSW Cup to play, and City-Country and then back into Blues camps.

Blues not done yet

I take my hat off to Queensland but we’re not done yet.”

Queensland took a 28-18 lead into halftime off the back of five tries to NSW’s three.

It was tit-for-tat points from both sides early for scores to be locked up three times.

But late in the half Queensland scored back-to-back tries through Zac Schumacher and Adam Tannock to surge to the lead.

They compounded the Blues misery not long after the break, with two quick tries to Peter Arbuckle to take the score out to 38-18.

NSW pegged one back through Rick Engles but the Maroons scored two more four-pointers to reach their half-century 50-24 and take a stranglehold on the match.

A length of the field try to Engles for his double gave NSW a little hope but it was all too late.

Two players made their debuts for the Blues – Edie Morgan (Dragons) and Tim Robinson (Raiders).

Another two – Australian Wheelaroos Corey Cannane (Dragons) and Brad Grove (Raiders) – were George’s pick from his 10-man squad.

Cannane, who is Craig’s son, scored two tries, while Grove was a constant thorn in Queensland’s side.

QLD played out of their skin

“They played out of their skins today. Corey is always so strong up the middle and Brad has such speed down the sidelines,” George said.

“We’ve got another Origin in less than six months so we’ll be more prepared for that one.”

The two players’ awards today both went to Queensland: Adam Tannock was given the ‘Spirit of the Game’ trophy, while goal-kicker with 6-7 for the match, Bayley McKenna was named ‘Man of the Match’.

Watching proceedings was Australian coach Brett Clark, who will name a 13-man Wheelaroos squad in a fortnight so training camps can be organised ahead of November’s World Cup in the UK.

The 2022 Wheelchair State of Origin will be held in June with Clark able to add or subtract from his 13 based on form, or injuries.

Rugby League’s greatest rivalry opens another brutal chapter

When people watch Wheelchair Rugby League for the first time, Australian and NSW rep player Brad Grove knows what their reaction will be.

“The first comment we get most often is ‘Why haven’t I seen this before?’,” Grove said.

“Their reaction shows that there’s an appetite for our game out there.”

Those not familiar with the game can watch the live stream on NSWRL TV of the State of Origin between NSW and Queensland from the Whitlam Centre in Liverpool at 2.15pm tomorrow (29 January).

The game has been postponed the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with NSW winning the 2019 interstate clash 52-4.

Unfortunately, due to the current Omicron surge, Saturday’s match is not open to spectators.

But Grove, a veteran of the NSW Blues side as well as a Wheelaroo (an Australian player at the 2013 and 2017 Wheelchair World Cups), encouraged fans to tune into NSWRL TV to have their eyes opened.

“Straight off the bat it’s different,” he said.

“Everyone is used to seeing the men’s and women’s games but when people see our game, they don’t expect us to be able to do the things we can do in a wheelchair.

Saturday’s match is not open to spectators

“After missing the last two years we’re obviously pretty disappointed (there’s no fans) but at least it’s getting streamed. For us the main thing is we get to play.

“All the boys are ready. We’ve got a few new players and lot of experienced guys there so we’re gelling really well – we’re ready to go.”

NSW co-captain Craig Cannane said in 2019 the game not only attracted a large crowd to Sydney Olympic Park but was live streamed as well.

“We had a big audience on live stream, which proves people want to watch us,” he said.

Cannane said the Queensland team had a number of Australian players in their ranks and were coached by England international, Jack Brown.

“Jack is one of the best players in the world and will be back playing for England at this year’s World Cup,” he said.

“He won the Golden Boot award in 2019 so he has experience and familiarity with the game.”

Cannane is also a dual World Cup representative.

the NSW Wheelchair Rugby League team presented with the NSW Blues playing Jerseys before the 2019 State of Origin (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

National selectors will use Saturday’s Origin game as they formulate the Wheelaroos squad for the 2022 World Cup.

The tournament is being played simultaneously with the men’s and women’s tournaments for the first time.

Grove is expecting a more highly competitive game than in 2019.

“The Queenslanders haven’t had the lockdowns we’ve had in Sydney so they’ve had more time to prepare as a group,” he said.

Commentary for the Origin game will be led by Jason Costigan, who has called more than 200 NRL games, mostly on Fox League in Australia and New Zealand’s Sky Television, including the 2002 NRL Grand Final.

Costigan will be joined in commentary by David Nugent, who will be team manager for the Wheelaroos at the World Cup and has an extensive background in Wheelchair Rugby League.

There are five players on court at a time, with the rules a close mirror of the 13-a-side running game but obviously without tackles, scrums, or traditional play-the-balls.

Players must pass backwards, possession changes after six tackles, the ball must be grounded on the try line or in-goal, and the points-scoring system is the same.

Players are tackled similar to OzTag – by defenders removing an attacking players’ velcro tag worn on the shoulders. The “field” is half the size of the running game – 50m x 25m – or across three indoor basketball courts.

Queensland ready to roll for State of Origin match up

This year is shaping up as a huge one for the nation’s best wheelchair rugby league players, with next week’s NRL Wheelchair State of Origin kicking off a busy representative calendar in 2022.

There has been a steady growth in support and exposure for the game during recent seasons and players will be pushing their case for selection in the Australian team.

NSW v QLD face off in the annual interstate clash at the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Liverpool, Sydney, on Saturday, January 29.

The Australian Wheelaroos team will compete in the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup in England later this year, with the tournament to be played simultaneously with the men’s and women’s tournaments for the first time.

Queensland coach Jack Brown said with improved preparations across the board in the lead-up to this game.

He was confident in a strong showing by his side for the match that was postponed last year due to COVID-19 complications.

“New South Wales have been a tough unit for a very long time now by developing with their long-running domestic leagues,” Brown said.

“It has given them the advantage against Queensland in the past. On the other side, Queensland previously have had literally no preparation leading up to their Origin games.

“This year, they have had full Queensland trials and camps to prepare themselves and have had the time to plan and learn how each individual in their team works.

“It’s safe to say, this is the greatest chance Queensland have had so far, and we’re only getting better.

“The players are some of the most professional individuals I have had the pleasure to work with.

“I’m sure they’re all excited for the chance to represent their country and with the form they are showing in our Queensland sessions now, Brett (Clark – Australia head coach) will be lucky to have any of them in his squad.”

The match with kick off at 3pm AEDT and New South Wales Rugby League plan to livestream the game.

The State of Origin match comes as the sport recently announced their Come, Try and Play project received a major funding boost after being awarded a Sport Australia participation grant.

The grant will help provide more opportunities for people to play wheelchair rugby league.

In Queensland, big strides have already been made in recent years, with Brown happy to see a growth in grassroots competitions which also lead to the inaugural state championships being staged last year.

“I can’t speak for previous seasons as I only arrived in Queensland before the 2021 season.

Having said that, I was involved in the Ashes series between England and Australia in 2019 when there were no domestic level competitions in Queensland,” Brown said.

“Then last season, it hit off with the first leagues in North Queensland and South East Queensland, with some amazing skills on show and heaps of opportunities for juniors and their parents to get involved.

“After this State of Origin and then the World Cup this year, our expectations for growth in the sport are sure to be exceeded.”

‘Push your Limits’ for International Day of People with Disability

NRL Wheelchair Rugby League (WRL) is supporting player Brad Grove who is showcasing his ‘Push your Limits’ fundraiser to celebrate 2021 International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

On Sunday 5 December Brad will feature in a special event at Sydney Olympic Park, competing a 10km plus push in his wheelchair, and he invites supporters to join him.

Brad, a representative player for WRL, says,

“I developed the ‘Push Your Limits’ project to raise money for our junior wheelchair rugby league players and assist with getting our community back on track after two years of interruptions.”

Inspired by his own journey back to the great outdoors and better wellbeing after the recent lockdown, he adds, “I really enjoyed my return to wheelchair pushes but I needed a motivation to continue.

I felt that WRL players and other wheelchair users could also do with some incentive – an enjoyable ‘push’ – to return to WRL or to the community in general.”

The project involves pushing his rugby league wheelchair 1,000km.

The initial fundraising aim is to reach $10k ($10/km), which will roughly provide 100 hours of court time for junior wheelchair rugby league.

As well as the International Day of People with Disability push, Brad’s program includes events around the country for the public to join in.

Martin Meredith Chair of NRL Wheelchair says, “We encourage footy fans and the Australian public to donate to the ‘Push your Limits’ project.

The funds raised will support our NRL wheelchair juniors to have training sessions, competitions and equipment that can help them to regain an active lifestyle and improve their wellbeing.”

To donate to the ‘Push your Limits’ project’ which raises funds for Junior Wheelchair Rugby League Development programs and activities, go to the campaign on the Australian Sports Foundation website.

Follow Brad’s epic wheelchair push project and his weekly stints up until the Rugby League World Cup launch in 2022 on Facebook, or join him for a walk, ride or push on December 5.

About International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3 December each year.

IDPwD is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

‘We’re pumped’: Wheelaroos welcome World Cup draw

Australian wheelchair coach Brett Clark has welcomed the release of the draw for next year’s World Cup in England.

The eight-team Wheelchair World Cup will be played alongside the men’s and women’s tournaments, culminating in all three finals being staged in Manchester on November 18 and 19.

The Wheelaroos will be based in London for their pool matches at the Copper Box Arena on:

November 3 v England
November 6 v Norway
November 9 v Spain

The semi-finals will be played at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on November 13, with the final at the 5,000 seat Manchester Central on November 18 after being shifted from Liverpool.

Cory Cannane and his dad Craig proudly display their Wheelaroos jerseys.

The change to the draw, due to the postponement of the World Cup from this year, means the wheelchair final will be played the night before the men’s and women’s deciders at Old Trafford on November 19.

Clark said the Wheelaroos were excited to be taking part in the World Cup and would now step up preparations for the tournament.

“It goes without saying that the last years have been difficult but with the great news that the Rugby League World Cup has been locked in for November 2022 I am excited that wheelchair rugby league will be showcased alongside the men’s and women’s running game,” Clark said.

“Our Wheelaroos squad is currently in preparation to be part of this milestone event. I am pumped, the team is pumped, we are coming England, bring it on.”

France will go into the tournament as favourites after the 2017 World Cup winners triumphed in their recent two Test series against England in Kent.

However, England captain Tom Halliwell believes the additional 12 months preparation due to the postponement of the World Cup caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will help other nations to close the gap with France.

“It gives us more time to be able to prepare and more time to be able to build this tournament to be the best in the world,” Halliwell said.

“We have a young squad and to get that World Cup lifted we have to become better people and become better players. That 12 months gives us an opportunity to be able to do that.

“To have the final in Manchester brings sort of a family unity to the tournament, which is what rugby league is all about.

“To be here with the men’s and women’s, it’s like a whole England family and ikf all three teams get to the final it will be an amazing experience.”

Match Report: England 24-49 France

England captain Tom Halliwell praised an impressive performance by France in the first of two Wheelchair Rugby League Internationals in Kent this week – but backed his team to bounce straight back when the teams meet again at the same venue on Saturday.

Picture by Will Palmer/SWpix.com – 10/11/2021 – Rugby League – Wheelchair International – England v France – Medway Park Sports Centre, Gillingham, England – Sebastien Bechara of England passes the ball out of the tackle of Jérémy Bourson of France

Halliwell’s team, who had romped to a comfortable victory against Wales in their only previous international since 2019, were stunned by the pace, power and skill of the 2017 World Cup champions, for whom the brothers Gilles and Nicolas Clausells were outstanding.

But the Leeds Rhinos forward saw enough in the way England surged back in a thrilling second half period to draw confidence ahead of the weekend rematch.

Rugby League – Wheelchair International – England v France – Medway Park Sports Centre, Gillingham, England – Tom Halliwell (C) of England fights for possession with Lionel Alazard and Arno Vargas of France Picture by Will Palmer/SWpix.com – 10/11/2021

“That was a tough match, as you’d expect against the world champions,” said Halliwell.

“It was definitely a level up from anything we’ve played since Covid, and that’s exactly what we wanted.

“We didn’t do ourselves any favours with some of the mistakes we made and penalties we gave away – and that’s what we need to improve for Saturday.

Picture by Will Palmer/SWpix.com – 10/11/2021 – Rugby League – Wheelchair International – England v France – Medway Park Sports Centre, Gillingham, England – Gilles Clausells (C) of France warms up before the match

“But we played some decent stuff as well and hopefully it was a decent game for the people watching in Medway and on the BBC.
“Every time we play it seems to be a bigger occasion, and it’s a great thing to be part of.”

After a spectacular pre-match light show to greet the entry of the teams, there were no points for 17 minutes with some brutal defence.

France broke the deadlock with a penalty from Nicolas Clausells, and he also played a key part in a try for his brother five minutes later, then converted it to extend the lead to 8-0.

England hit back with a superb try for the Halifax Panthers youngster Rob Hawkins, converted by Joe Coyd from the local Argonauts club.

Picture by Will Palmer/SWpix.com – 10/11/2021 – Rugby League – Wheelchair International – England v France – Medway Park Sports Centre, Gillingham, England – Gilles Clausells (C) of France warms up before the match

But France seized control in the late stages of the first half with Gilles Clausells scoring his second try and Jeremy Bourson adding another, to extend their lead to 22-6.

Halliwell set up a try for his Leeds team-mate James Simpson to give England fresh hope early in the second half, but France stretched away again with superb tries from Julien Panella and Lionel Alazard.

England hinted at an improbable fightback as Halliwell laid on a try for the lively Nathan Collins and then went over himself, with Collins converting both to reduce the arrears to 36-24.

But the French secured their victory when Dany Denuwelaere scored the try his formidable performance deserved, and applied further gloss with a second try for Bourson who completed the scoring with a drop goal.

England Wheelchair Rugby League squad announced for French test

England Wheelchair Rugby League Head Coach Tom Coyd has named his matchday squad to face France tomorrow evening (Wednesday 10 November) at Gillingham’s Medway Park Sports Centre.

And Coyd includes two players – Adam Rigby and Declan Roberts – from the newly-formed Wigan Warriors team, alongside established players such as Nathan Collins, Tom Halliwell and James Simpson from the all-conquering Leeds Rhinos.

Tomorrow’s match is the first in a two-test series against the reigning world champions and will be shown live via the BBC’s Red Button from 6.30pm.

The Red Button coverage repeats the BBC’s coverage of England’s successful international against Wales earlier this year, while the cross-Channel series against the French sees both countries building towards next Autumn’s rescheduled Rugby League World Cup (RLWC2021).

England Wheelchair RL Head Coach, Tom Coyd, says: “This will probably be the most competitive series we will have experienced since we played in France back in 2019.

We have been working so hard throughout the pandemic and through to the end of last season, so it’s a fantastic chance to see for real whether what we have been working on has been worthwhile.

I also think it’s a great opportunity to put this squad under some pressure, which will be a great learning experience as we build towards the World Cup.”

England squad:

Sebastien Bechara (Catalans Dragons/Halifax Panthers), Nathan Collins (Leeds Rhinos), Joe Coyd (Argonauts), Tom Halliwell (Leeds Rhinos, Captain), Rob Hawkins (Halifax Panthers), Lewis King (Argonauts), Adam Rigby, Declan Roberts (both Wigan Warriors), James Simpson (Leeds Rhinos)

France squad:

Lionel Alazard (Montauban), Jérémy Bourson, Gilles Clausells, Nicolas Clausells (all Dragons), Dany Denuwelaere (Montauban), Thomas Duhalde (Euskadi), Guillaume Mautz (Avignon), Julien Penella (Euskadi), Arno Vargas (Dragons), Adrien Zittel (Arbent)

Players from both squads – military veterans James Simpson and Gilles Clausells – will pay their respects to the fallen on Remembrance Day, 11 November, 11am, at Chatham Naval War Memorial in Kent, where they will lay wreaths on behalf of the respective teams.

The second England versus France match takes place at the same Medway Park venue on Saturday 13 November, 4pm. Before then, those England squad members who have missed out on selection for tomorrow’s match – Nathan Mulhall, Freya Levy, Martin Norris and Fred Nye – will line up for England Knights against the France Espoirs at Medway on Friday.

Canberra Region Rugby League has developed a 2022-2025 wheelchair rugby league strategic plan to lead the inclusion program in Canberra and surrounding regions, including southern NSW.

The plan was formed with the direction from the Canberra Region Wheelchair Rugby League (CRWRL) sub-committee, who steer the overall plan.

Throughout this process the CRWRL’s mission has been the primary focus, with the commitment to connect and educate the wider community of the physical, mental and social benefits of being involved in the wheelchair rugby league program.

In delivering this mission, we remain committed to our values of inclusion, integrity, respect, excellence and adaptability, which form the foundation of every decision we make.

This strategic plan, one of the first for our adaptive all-inclusive sport, is vital in ensuring the ongoing development and growth of wheelchair rugby league in Australia.

This overall plan provides the platform for the CRWRL program and its participants to recognise some major achievements for the adaptive sport in the region, whilst capitalising on the collaborative approach in which this strategy has been developed.

VISION

WE ARE ALL-INCLUSIVE

MISSION
