Mozer one to watch for the Magpies in Round 2

The Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup season was scheduled to kick off with three games last weekend.

By the time Sunday was over, only one game was played with Tweed Seagulls and Souths Logan Magpies fighting it out in the rain at Tugun on Saturday.

The Magpies kicked off their season with a 30-18 win over the defending premiers and it is that kind of form coach Karmichael Hunt will be looking to take into this week’s match against Burleigh Bears.

However, the former Queensland Origin representative said he wasn’t sure if playing a game would be an advantage heading into the Round 2 game, which switched venues to Pizzey Park.

“It depends on your perspective… the Bears are probably saying ‘we get an extra week off’ and we are saying ‘great, we are playing footy’,” Hunt said.

“We haven’t been able to train because of the weather in Brisbane, so any football we get to play is a positive.

“We are happy to move it to Burleigh and just keep playing football.”

The Magpies would be satisfied to have come away with the win last week, given they had 47 per cent of the ball and only completed at 60 per cent.

“That was pleasing, we didn’t have a lot of ball, but we defended well and I thought we did the little things right,” Hunt said.

“We pushed up, we created one-on-ones for players. We really committed to those things and in horrible conditions, they can be the hard things to do.

“We had a few players that game was their first (Auswide Bank) Mal Meninga Cup game, so they have started their careers at this level now and will have a clearer picture what is required.”

Hunt wasn’t in any doubt on who won his stamp of approval in Round 1, with a number of players catching his eye.

“Chris Faagutu was outstanding… scored two tries and was still going at the end in heavy conditions,” Hunt said.

“We had him in the middle and he score two tries and works hard all game.”

The team’s two key spine players also impressed in the victory.

Number six Jye Gray was outstanding, going through the Tweed defence twice to score two tries and also finished his afternoon out with an impressive 118 metres, three line breaks and two tries.

What allowed Gray to play with such width was the new hooker Blake Mozer (main photo playing for Queensland Under 17 City Boys last year), who was playing against his former team.

Mozer, who has been training with the Brisbane Broncos during pre-season.

He controlled where the Magpies gave the ball over with his kicking game and wrapped up the big Seagulls forwards with his defence.

He showed footy smarts across the park and the Bears will be on Mozer watch during their match.

“We defended our line a lot in the first 15 minutes and then we went down the other end and scored, so that’s a real positive sign,” Mozer said.

“I thought Jye Gray was excellent, when you have a player like that on the left, you get the ball to them.

“If the Bears load up in defence on our left it might open some options on the right and we have to be able to react to that when it comes up.

“It was a bit strange playing against Tweed, but once it kicked off it was another game and I just wanted to win and play as well as I could for Souths.”

This weekend, 12 more teams will be in action with what is expected to be a massive weekend of football.

In a late change to the draw, Kingaroy will host the match between Wide Bay Bulls and Sunshine Coast Falcons with the venue moved due to the lingering effects of the extreme weather.

Match: Cutters v Capras

2022 will see an exciting new addition to the facilities at Keebra Park with the unveiling of a new state of the art strength and conditioning centre.

Keebra Park leaves No stone Unturned with new state of the art strength and conditioning centre

This centre will allow more students from across our sporting Academies, access to development opportunities under the supervision of a team of qualified strength and condition coaches as they pursue their sporting goals.

Meanwhile our current year 11 students have been making the most of working out in the old gymnasium in preparation for the 2022 season.

This old facility has always been a fairly spartan building with the discipline and determination of the athlete, being far more an indicator of success that the equipment itself and while we are all looking forward eagerly to our new state of the art facility, the ethics and attitudes of those that came before will no doubt echo through its girders and foundations and guide the next generation onwards to success.

The Queensland Under 17 City – Boys team proved too strong in their representative match, claiming a 52-20 win at Moreton Daily Stadium against their Country counterparts.

Match: QLD City v QLD Country – Boys

Round 1 – Saturday 2nd October

Full Time : Queensland City Under 17 Boys 52 – 20 Queensland City Under 17 Boys

Half Time : Queensland City Under 17 Boys 10 – 28 Queensland City Under 17 Boys

Venue : Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

At half-time, Country were trailing 28-10, but scored the final try in the first half to stay in the match.

However, they were overpowered in the second as City went on with the victory with both Jye Gray and Robert Toia getting doubles for the match.

Joshua Lynn kicked eight from nine conversions and score a try of his own to boost the winning tally.

Successful City coach Jesse Maclean said he was happy with the way his team came together during the build up to their game.

“Camp was really good, all the City boys have played against each other before, so that’s a head start,” Maclean said.

“The Country boys, their geographical spread is a lot bigger than here, so that was more challenging for them no doubt, but the quality of the game today, the boys all identified it as really fast so, the camp was good, lots of relationships being formed so hopefully we can stick with them for the next couple of years.”mozer

Outstanding hooker Blake Mozer was awarded player of the match honours, but his halves Gray and Lynn also had strong games which translated to good performances across the team.

“Jye Gray and Josh Lynn were outstanding, Josh was coming in off an injury,” Maclean said.

“Jye’s a really good footballer, his favourite player is Cody Walker from the looks of his footy, he’s got a lot of potential.

“It’s a really good group, no one was out place.

“We knew what we were good at, our hookers were really sharp, the boys have got footy in them, they are not afraid to throw the footy around; you just need equal possession to get to the point where you can.”

Blake Mozer has ‘NRL written all over him’

Blake Mozer has ‘NRL written all over him’

Author : Joel Gould QRL

Good judges say Brisbane Broncos-contracted Queensland Under 17 City hooker Blake Mozer has “NRL written all over him” as the tall rake from Keebra Park High takes the next step in his rugby league career.

Blake, an intelligent dummy-half who idolises Queensland Maroons legend Cameron Smith, has already enjoyed one of the best groundings a young footballer could hope for and has his sights on playing Intrust Super Cup next year.

The Broncos have wrapped the 17-year-old up until the end of 2023 and he has come through the club’s Elite Player Development program. It was in the EPD squad where Blake learned plenty from the likes of former EPD athletic performance coach David Ballard, now the club’s head of performance.

“I have been there since I was 13, and signed since I was 15,” Blake, who played for Tweed in the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup side, said.

Grand final highlights: Blackhawks v Tweed

“The Broncos have developed me brilliantly. I wouldn’t be here without the Broncos. Their development is awesome.

“The highlight for me has been the one-on-one training you get from them. Dave Ballard, who is up with the NRL squad now, and Mick Kennedy, have worked on my speed and skills. They focus on the little things that refine your game.

“Now that I am getting older, it is more about strength and the fitness component to get me ready for the next chapter after school.

“The Broncos obviously see something in me in my position and for me it is about working hard to get to play NRL one day… but it’s step by step, starting with the City game against Country.

“I am looking forward to it. It is the last game of the year before pre-season starts, so it is good to have a bit of rep footy finally after all this COVID has happened.”

Blake said he was “more or less” six feet tall; something he said he would work to his advantage when City play Country at Moreton Daily Stadium on October 2 at 2.20pm.

“It is weird not being the stereotypical short and stocky dummy-half but I have used it to my advantage,” Blake said.

“I have never been that fast and strong so I have used my head to get me to where I am. Playing smart footy is a big part of my role, and using my skills.

“Being tall has its advantages and its disadvantages as well.”

Smith wasn’t the fastest or strongest either, but none were smarter.

“I got the opportunity to go to Melbourne and watch the Storm where I met Cameron Smith,” Blake said.

“He has obviously been my biggest inspiration. There aren’t many that have ever compared to him.

“I like watching the next generation now and particularly a guy like Harry Grant. He is similar to Cameron Smith in the way he thinks, and he is agile which is something I want to include into my game.”

Blake was the captain of the First XIII Keebra Park High side this year and head coach Glen Campbell said he was a gem to coach and had a big future.

“I don’t say this very often but Blake has NRL written all over him and it has been that way for a few years now,” Campbell said.

“He has strength in defence and attack, he is intelligent, his pass is good and he has the tactics. Hence he was picked for the Australian Schoolboy merit side this year.

“He is signed to the Broncos and they will be hanging on to him for grim death. He’s that good.

“Blake reminds me of the Pommie hooker at Canberra [Josh Hodgson] with his thinking game. He is quite tall but he will fill out. As the weight comes on him he will be a physical nine and will handle defence in the middle in the NRL.”

Blake is one of the new breed of young rugby league players with his media skills and eloquence away from the football field. He said his experience at powerhouse school Keebra Park had been crucial to his development too.

“As a Year Seven kid I watched Payne Haas in his final year at the school and it is pretty surreal to think that I could be training with him soon,” Blake said.

“I have been fortunate to have had people like Mr Campbell, Mr [Greg] Lenton, Mr [Peter] Norman and Mr [James] Chapman at Keebra Park. They are all just as important to me as the Broncos.

“James is actually the strength and conditioning coach of our City team and Peter Norman has been the brains of our Keebra Park team as our assistant coach.”

Blake is now ready to take the next step in his footballing journey.

“I played at Tweed this year but I will make the change to play at a Broncos feeder club next year, at Souths,” Blake said.

“I am still eligible for Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup, so I will probably start there and try and work my way up to Cup.”

Langer Trophy: Surprise packet players of 2021

Author : Andrew Dawson Quest Newspapers

Revealed: Who have been the surprise packet players of this season’s Langer Trophy, the elite schoolboy rugby league competition? We present seven ripping rookie players.

Who have been the surprise packet players of this season’s Langer Trophy, the elite schoolboy rugby league competition?

We knew entering 2021 the likes of Blake Mozer (Keebra Park SHS), Tom Weaver (PBC SHS), Chris Faagutu (Marsden SHS) and Tahrell Feaveai (Wavell) would shine.

But what about the surprise packets, those who entered the season not as a headline act, but rather as under studies.

NEWS CORP WILL CONTINUE TO LIVESTREAM UP TO 12 MATCHES EACH WEDNESDAY ONCE THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN ENDS. ENJOY LANGER RESERVES, WALTERS CUP AND LANGER TROPHY ACTION, all livestreamed by www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and News affiliates.

Filisi Frost (Coombabah SHS)

Filisi Frost (Wing) – wasn’t a certain starter going into the season but he has scored his fair share of tries this season and has saved just as many with some great defensive reads. He is an example of someone who has worked really hard in training and has been rewarded for it.

Ranil Shankar (Mabel Park SHS)

Ranil Shankar has been a sparkling diamond for Mabel Park SHS in its Langer Trophy debut season.

A little hooker, he has played every minute and is a pocket dynamo.

Because of his size, opposition players have targeted him all season. “But there is no recollection of him missing any tackles,’’ said his coach Lee Addison.

Keano Kini (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS)

While his performances have been no surprise to his coach or team mates, other schools now have him on their tip sheet.

A year 11 student, he has been a major part of the Langer Trophy success this season.

He has speed when returning the ball, strong carries and footwork that have made him very hard to stop one on one.

A Gold Coast Titans contracted player, he moved from New Zealand in January where he starred in NZ Rugby League competitions, including being named Player of the Tournament at the Schools under 15 National Carnival in 2019.

He also played for the New Zealand under 16s Team against Samoa as a 15-year-old.

Kini was a member of the successful 2021 Tweed Seagulls Mal Meninga Cup squad that won the State Final in May, although injury cut his season short after three rounds.

PJ Potasi (Keebra Park SHS)

PJ Potasi has added a threatening dimension to Keebra Park SHS’ potent attack with ball playing skills that most middles do not have.

He has worked hard on his fitness and, with more miles in his legs, he has got better the longer the season has progressed.

A year 11 student, Potasi now has the challenge of finishing the season strongly and should be a forward leader in 2022.

Jarvis Yeatman (Ipswich SHS)

Yeatman started the season off the bench but it is no coincidence Ipswich’s second half of the season surge has coincided with him winning a starting position at lock. He is a work horse every side needs, and tidies up a lot of tackles around the middle as well as bringing energy to the people around him.

Interestingly Ipswich SHS’s worst performances of the season – the second half fade out against PBC SHS, and Marsden and Keebra Park – were when he was injured.

Taelon Te-Whiu Hopa (Marsden SHS)

Year 10 student Taelon Te-Whiu Hopa has channelled the likes of ball-playing NRL forwards John Asiata-Joseph Paulo by displaying amazing versatility in the Langer Trophy this season.

A Gold Coast TItans contracted forward, he has stepped up to play every game in the opens at second row, front row and even in the halves where has covered for the injured Cassius Cowley. He is super skilful, tough and covers multiple positions.

His teammate Will Semu, although renowned for his ability on the field, has also impressed with his leadership qualities off the field despite being a year 10 student.

Bristowe Murray (Wavell SHS)

Murray is a grade 11 student who has forced his way into the Langer Trophy side. A good team man and popular with his team mates, he plays the utility of the bench and has scored a couple of important tries, while having impact off the bench. He can play every position, although No.9 and No.13 has suited him best.
