The NSWRL has been crowned the Organisation of the Year at the prestigious 2022 Rebel NSW Champions of Sports Awards at the International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour on Monday night.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden collected the award after the NSWRL was chosen over the other finalists including Football NSW, Little Athletics NSW, Volleyball NSW, and Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT.

It is the second time in four years

It is the second time in four years the NSWRL has been named Organisation of the Year after also taking out the award in 2019.

“This is a great honour for our organisation and acknowledgment of the efforts for our game across the state,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

“I am very proud of everyone that I have the privilege to work with and proud of everyone in the NSWRL family for the outcomes they continue to achieve.”

The NSWRL continued to enjoy success both on and off the field in 2022 despite the extremely difficult circumstances of the past two seasons which have confronted all sports across the state.

Including the COVID pandemic and extreme weather conditions of bushfires and flooding.

The participation figures for 2022 are at almost 106,000, which includes a record number of 23,109 participants for women’s Rugby League.

The NSWRL also enjoys the support of almost 26,500 volunteers and coaches every season which is acknowledged in the annual NSWRL Community Awards. A club and three people from NSW later went on to claim four of the six awards in the NRL Community Awards.

Penrith Panthers Chief Executive Brian Fletcher (l) and NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden

The NSWRL has demonstrated its commitment to community with several programs to promote diversity and inclusion, including a Women in Sport Leadership program which provides aspiring elite female coaches and administrators with further skills and knowledge to excel as leaders.

Other programs include the Blues Youth Leadership Program, which saw NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler share the values of the NSW Origin team to more than 2000 high school students across the state

The Changing Rooms program, which involves True Blue Paul Langmack talking to teenagers about the importance of mental fitness.

Do you love your footy, want to be close top the action – 2023 Sideline official wanted

The NSWRL also committed $600,000 in funding as part of a flood relief package for communities across the state, particularly in northern NSW, which had been devastated by the floods.

On the field, the NSWRL fell just short of a clean sweep of the State of Origin series after winning three of the four major elite trophies.

The Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues won the Shield back for the first time since 2019; the Under 19s Women’s maintained their unbeaten run;

While the Under 19s Men’s made a triumphant return to the representative arena after COVID forced the match to be abandoned for the past three years.

The NSWRL congratulates the Penrith Panthers after they were named Team of the Year at the 2022 Rebel NSW Champions of Sport Awards.

The Panthers became the first club in history to win four competitions in the same season: the Telstra Premiership in the NRL, and The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup and SG Ball Cup in the NSWRL.

Can Panthers equal Record

Penrith aim to equal 40-year record on NSWRL Grand Final day

Penrith Panthers will have a chance at becoming the first team in 40 years to win three NSWRL competitions – the NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup and SG Ball Cup.

In the same season at the NSWRL Grand Final day at CommBank Stadium on Sunday 25 September.

The Panthers will take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the Grand Final for The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup; and the Newcastle Knights in the Jersey Flegg Cup decider.

The club already has the SG Ball Cup in their trophy cabinet after beating the Sydney Roosters in May.

The only club to win the same three competitions in the same season in the 57 years since all competitions have been running together

NSW Cup 1908; Jersey Flegg Cup 1961; SG Ball Cup 1965) is Balmain Tigers in 1982.

Penrith, who last claimed an NSW Cup premiership in 2017, just missed out on claiming the Minor Premiership to Newtown but were the first team through to the Grand Final after beating the Jets in the Major Semi-final.

They boast plenty of NRL experience with halfback Sean O’Sullivan filling in for NRL No.7 Nathan Cleary this season.

While a host of other players have had a taste of first grade including Christian Crichton, Robert Jennings, Jack Cole, Sunia Turuva, Kurt Falls, Soni Luke and Matt Eisenhuth.

The Panthers will look to send several departing players out on a high note with O’Sullivan signing for Redcliffe Dolphins from next season while captain J’maine Hopgood is moving on to Parramatta Eels.

The Bulldogs have also had recent success in the NSW Cup after winning the competition in 2018 and have been in scintillating form after winning three elimination finals to make the decider.

They also have NRL talent at their disposal with captain and halfback Brandon Wakeham producing three try assists and a line break assist in the Preliminary Final win over the Jets.

Winger Jayden Okunbor scored two tries, had a try assist and ran for 168m.

Penrith also has a chance at success in the Jersey Flegg Cup decider after beating Minor Premiers Sydney Roosters in the Preliminary Final.

Newcastle Knights were the first team to book their place in the Grand Final after beating the Roosters and boast Under 19s NSW prop Max Bradbury in their line-up.

The Penrith team includes Mavrik Geyer, the son of former premiership-winning Panther Mark Geyer, and halfback Isaiya Katoa, who steered the SG Ball Cup team to victory and has signed with the Dolphins from 2023.

The other match being played on the NSWRL Grand Final day will be the Presidents Cup decider between Maitland Pickers and Hills Bulls.

The Presidents Cup is a knockout competition to determine the champion, semi-professional club from four competitions across NSW.

The Pickers, who were the last team to win the Presidents Cup when a modified version of the competition was held in 2020, claimed the Denton Engineering Cup in Newcastle.

They have former NRL halfback Brock Lamb in their team and led the Denton Engineering Cup in both attack and defence.

Hills Bulls claimed the Ron Massey Cup in Sydney and boasted the second-best attack and best defence of the competition.

Also have a strong team with captain Brad Keighran, the brother of Sydney Roosters centre Adam Keighran, being named the Ron Massey Cup Player of the Year at the Brad Fittler Medal.

They started fast and finished resolutely in defending repeated sets on their own line, with everything in between of high quality as well as the Sharks Matthews Cup marched on with a big sudden death Finals victory.

The under 17 Sharks were dominant throughout in scoring five tries to one in a 28-4 win over the Parramatta Eels to set up a Grand Final qualifying clash with the Sydney Roosters next week.

Blake Woodger steers the Sharks into another attack in the elimination Final (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

“Very happy with the win,” coach Brad Kelly began. “I knew playing Parramatta was always going to be a massive challenge but I thought right from the start of the game the intent from our boys was obvious”.

“We had a lot of momentum in the first half, but what was really pleasing was the second half when the tide swung a bit and their power game came into it a little bit more and our boys were able to withstand that onslaught”.

“I was really proud of the defensive effort,” Kelly added.

An Eels error gifted the Sharks first points, Jayze Tuigamala taking advantage to open his team’s account and following the Chevy Stewart conversion it was 6-0 to the Cronulla side just two minutes into the match.

With their tails up the young Sharks continued to press and it didn’t take long for them to add to their lead.

Lock Alex Challenor, voted player’s player for his energetic performance, stepping through the middle of the ruck to post his team’s second try.

Stewart was again on target to make it 12-0 Sharks and despite having the better of the field position and possession.

The the Cronulla side was unable to add any first half points as the teams went to the break with the score unchanged.

Knowing the Eels would be have been on the end of a half time roasting and looking to fight their way back into the contest.

The Sharks withstood the early challenge and only three minutes into the half would extend their advantage, winger Richard Whalebone running onto a perfectly weighted long ball from Bryce Sait to score wide out.

Seeing their season slipping away the Eels struck back courtesy of a spectacular individual effort from centre Michael Gabrael to make the score 16-4, but that would be as close as the Parramatta side would get.

As coach Kelly explained the Sharks held firm as the Eels attempted to lift, with the result virtually sealed with a brilliant try to Jasper Catton who jumped high over his opposition to claim a cross field kick and plant the ball down.

Jasper Catton who jumped high over his opposition to claim a cross field kick and plant the ball down (Photo’s : Steve Montgomery)

The Stewart conversion pushed the score out to 22-4 with 12 minutes left on the clock and the Sharks were well in control.

Lachlan Araullo then crashed over with one his trademark tries from close range in breaking the spirit of the Eels and booking his team an appointment with the Roosters in the Grand Final qualifier.

In addition to the standout performance of Challenor, the Sharks were well served by Stewart who continued his outstanding season.

Outside backs Whalebone and Kurt Montgomery had arguably their best game of the year, getting through plenty of work in helping out their forwards.

While the usual suspects in Araullo and Max McCarthy played tough in the middle, as they have all season, against a big and physical Eels pack.

The Sharks will now look to regroup and get ready to go again next weekend.

“We’ll just prepare the way we do every week and just rip in,” Kelly said.

Rookie Report: Two teams earn entry into the semi-finals

In this week’s Rookie Report, we take a look at the nib Newcastle Knights pathways teams in the Knock-On-Effect NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup, SG Ball Cup, Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.

The two senior teams – NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg – took on the Sea Eagles in Round 5 of their respective competitions while the Junior Rep sides completed their final round against the Panthers.

See how each team fared:

SG Ball Cup – Knights 32-18 Panthers

The SG Ball Cup side continued their good form with a solid 14-point win over the Penrith Panthers at Maitland Sports Ground last Saturday.

In a battle for second spot, the team scored six tries to the Panthers four to earn their third win a row and secure a semi-finals berth.

Ethan Ferguson opened the scoring for Newcastle four minutes into the contest before Noah Nailagoliva crossed the stripe on the 16th minute mark.

Fletcher Sharpe scored the Knights third try four minutes later as the Knights raced out to an early lead.

Penrith hit back with two tries of their own either side of the half-time siren.

Penrith then took the lead when they scored five minutes after half-time.

Cooper Bigeni put the Knights back in front with a try on the 47th minute mark.

In the last fifteen minutes, Nailagoliva and Ferguson scored their second tries of the match to seal the victory for the Knights.

The SG Ball side finished the regular season in second spot with six wins and one defeat.

The team has earned a week off to advance straight to the second week of the finals.

Tarsha Gale Cup – Knights 50-4 Panthers

The Tarsha Gale Cup side scored a huge 46-point win over the Penrith Panthers on Saturday at Maitland Sports Ground.

The team ran in nine tries to one to cement a spot in the finals after another incredible campaign for the side.

Sophie Clancy scored in the opening minute to get the red and blue off to the best possible start.

In another dominant first half display, the team scored another five tries through Kasey Gaukroger (two), another to Clancy and one each to Tori Brazier and Ebony Woodcock.

Leading 34-0 at half-time, the match was all but wrapped up.

The Panthers scored one after the break, but it was the Tarsha Gale side’s day running in another three tries courtesy of a Mia Middleton double and Madison Marmion.

Jersey Flegg Cup – Knights 20-0 Sea Eagles

The Jersey Flegg Cup side produced a shut-out, 20-point win over the Sea Eagles last Thursday night.

In a curtain-raiser for the NRL game, the Flegg side ran in four tries to nil in an impressive display in tough conditions at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Winger, Travhon Lemalama, scored first for the Knights of a set play from the scrum feed.

A short side raid on the other wing had Keanu Wainohu-Kemp diving over for the Knights second 10 minutes after half-time.

Cooper Jenkins and Lemalama scored tries in the final 10 minutes to secure the result for the red and blue.

The win moves the Flegg side up to fourth spot on the ladder with three wins from five starts.

The team will take on the Bulldogs in Round 6 at Belmore Sports Ground this Saturday.

NSW Cup – Knights 14-24 Sea Eagles

The NSW Cup side went down by 10 points to the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles at Newcastle No.2 Sports Ground on Sunday.

The side held a 10-0 lead during the lead, but let it slip to receive their third loss in a row.

The team started fast with Brayden Musgrove scoring an early try in the 4th minute mark.

Dylan Phythian had the Knights second nine minutes before half-time to take the 10-point lead into the break.

The Sea Eagles struck back 12 minutes into the second half before scoring another three tries in a 16-minute blitz.

Nicholas O’Meley scored a late consolation try for the Knights, but it wasn’t enough for the red and blue.

Tex Hoy ran for a team-high 181 metres at five-eight along with a try-assist and one line-break.

Honeti Tuha also had a strong performance on the wing running for 138 metres and had five tackle breaks.

The NSW Cup side will take on the Bulldogs next round at Belmore Sports Ground this Saturday.
