England secure dramatic win in European rugby league u19s championship

England pulled off a dramatic victory, defeating holders France 14-12 in the European U19s Championship at the Pasian di Prato Stadium in Udine, Italy, coming back from being 8-0 down at the break.

The win was immediately dedicated to assistant coach Gary McMahon, who tragically passed away when with the squad last weekend.

Winger Noah Lancellot claimed two tries as part of the fightback, England head coach Allan Coleman, who stands down now, understandably emotional and full of praise for his charges.

“I’m so proud of everybody, players, staff – all who has been part of what we wanted to achieve,” he said.

“Our message at half time was let’s leave everything out there, give it all we’ve got, no regrets and I’m lost for words;

Gary was behind everything we did. A number of these players will go on and sign professional from this, I have no doubt of that.”

In a fiery encounter as the light faded, Justin Tropis opened the scoring for the French with a fine long range effort.

Thomas Monclus missing the conversion but adding two penalties before the break, both sides having a player sinbinned in the opening forty for late challenges.

England had two tries disallowed, winger Andy Djeukam couldn’t beat the touchline in the first half and his replacement Harvey Oldroyd was also ruled out in the second.

Lancelott did find space on the opposite wing for his double just after the hour, one a spectacular dive into the corner.

England’s improved defensive effort, enthusiasm in contact and territorial advantage throughout the second half unsettled the French and Oldroyd finished another superb left to right move in the corner to move them ahead.

French centre Arthur Salles went over five minutes from time, but Monclus missed the conversion that could have taken it to golden point.

In the preceding Plate Final to decide third place in the tournament, Wales defeated Ukraine 32-7.

There was little between the sides in the opening 25 minutes, props Michael Carter and Bradley Williams running hard for Wales and Ukraine responding in kind through Maksym Harmash and Bohdan Stetsun.

Dafydd Orr Morgan delayed a restart after Oleksandr Formiuk defused the bomb in the in-goal area that saw Wales reduced to 12 players with a sin binning, Oleksandr Levandovskyi slotting over a now trademark drop goal to move Ukraine ahead.

Unconverted tries late in the half from Bradley Toy, burrowing over from dummy-half, and Oscar Fisher in the corner saw Wales lead 8-1 at the break. Heavy rain and a strong wind accompanied the second period.

Fisher with his second and Mason Phillips extending the advantage by the 50th minute.

Ukraine showed the spirit that has made them so popular throughout the tournament, building pressure to give the opportunity for Harmesh spring out of dummy-half to add some respectability to the score line, Oleksandr Forniuk adding a difficult conversion.

Back rower Rhys Davies claimed a brace for the Welsh to confirm the win, head coach Wayne Ponting commenting: “Ukraine gave us a massive fright, fair play to them they upset out game plan.

Once we got back into it, we found our feet. We finished third in Serbia in 2018 so, with a new group of boys, this is another massive step in the right direction.”

Ireland win European rugby league u19s shield

Ireland remained unbeaten following two rounds of forty minute matches against hosts Italy and Serbia to win the U19s Championship Plate, at the Pasian di Prato Stadium in Udine.

The games for sides finishing fifth to seventh in the qualifying competition took place last Tuesday and today (Saturday), and Ireland coach Bernard Westerman saw his side concede only one try in four games.

Twice beating the Italians 30-0 and Serbia 22-6 and 42-0 to round off the Plate competition.

“I’m very proud of my guys, we stuck together and regrouped after missing out on the main tournament semi finals, they showed great character on and off the pitch to overcome that disappointment,” said Westerman.

“It is a testament to the guys to return home with that shield. We are looking at player development and we found some hidden gems out there in a fantastic tournament.”

In the first round of games, Ireland fullback Nathan Connell was outstanding, crossing for four tries – including a hat trick against the Serbs – and kicking eight goals in total.

With spoils shared between Italy and Serbia following young Azzuri Christopher-Kyle De Meyer’s touchline conversion which denied Serbia what would have been their first victory in the tournament.

In Round two, Ireland overcame a dogged Italian side with captain James Downes leading the charge and Louix Gorman instrumental in steering play. Italy’s wingmen Davide Saita and Fabia Dianti both showed great pace but a wall of green prevented them from capitalising on their downfield breaks.

Serbia finally did earn their inaugural win, beating Italy 12-4 in a bruising encounter.

Saita was again impressive although a foot in touch denied him an early try but he was successful later as he took Filippo Bertossi’s looping pass to score in the corner.

But Serbia’s robust defence and ability to capitalise on Italy’s errors proved the difference with Dragan Kokanovic and Vlado Jankovic crossing.

With the Shield already in the bag, Westerman rotated his team for their final encounter with Serbia.

Gorman’s hat trick capped an impressive tournament for the Hull KR Academy product whilst Connell ended another fine performance with a brace of tries and seven more goals.

ENGLAND 56-8. An outstanding performance from our U19s Lions.

England dedicated their win to assistant coach Gary McMahon, who tragically passed away at the team base on Sunday morning.

Keiran Welburn finished with 24 points from a try and ten perfect goals, Leeds Rhinos academy player Mekhi Bridgeman-Reany with a brace of tries after the hour.

Mason Phillips levelled for Wales early on but they trailed 20-8 at the break, and the Community Lions dominated the late exchanges.

Their head coach Allan Coleman commented: “The lads were emotional and paid the perfect tribute to Gary, they’ve been brilliant today.

It’s just fitting that they scored 56 points and that was his age. The second half we were excellent, completed our sets and it really worked for us.”

Match report

Holders France will take on England on Saturday in the final of the European U19s Championship, after both were comprehensive winners in their semis. Eric Anselme’s young Tricolors beat surprise package Ukraine 62-7 whilst England triumphed 56-8 against Wales, in the heat at the Pasian di Prato Stadium in Udine, Italy.

Matthieu Garrigues, winger Kylian Benavent, Thibault Marty and Louis Grossemy from the bench all scored try doubles for the French who got off to a blistering start with six touchdowns in the opening 26 minutes. “We knew it was going to be tough and we had to impose ourselves from the start,” said Anselme. “If we began well and worked hard, we felt that we would have the advantage. We managed to keep our concentration and did a good job.”

Davyd Zazimko showed supreme pace, scorching 90 metres to score between the posts to open Ukraine’s account on the stroke of half time and was denied another long range effort in the second, Vitalii Romanov’s drop goal delighting the crowd on the hour mark.

European rugby league u19 championship semi finals decided

Following the tragic passing of assistant coach Gary McMahon at the U19s European Championship in Udine, Italy over the weekend, the England team has decided to take up their place in the semi finals against Wales tomorrow (Tuesday), in tribute to him.

Tournament director, David Butler, said: “We have worked with the England Community Lions squad to ensure they receive the necessary support after such devastating news including from Steve McCormack, director of welfare for Rugby League Cares, who is here with them in Italy.”

The Community Lions finished second after Saturday’s pool stages, which included a 14-4 win over the Welsh.

England’s performances improved throughout the day, whilst Mark Jones’ men only conceding 40 points in their six matches.

Ukraine booked a berth in the semi finals after recording an historic win over Ireland, while also dispatching Italy and Serbia.

Having received a standing ovation from the Pasian Di Prato crowd before taking the field for their first game, Oleksandr Levandovskyi’s kicking proved crucial against the Irish, converting both Yevhen Checheta and Ivan Lipisii’s tries to edge them ahead as the whistle went.

“It was a super Saturday for us,” said Artur Martyrosian, president of the Ukraine Federation of Rugby League.

“We are rubbing shoulders with the top teams in youth rugby league in Europe.

I am very proud of all our players who worked so hard to get here and all day to secure great results. We will continue to prepare well and do our best.”

Ukraine’s opponents will be holders France, who dominated the day conceding only one try scored by Andy Djeukam of England throughout their six 20-minute games, as head coach Eric Anselme rotated his squad.

The European Plate will be contested between Ireland, Italy and Serbia who will meet each other in 40-minute games tomorrow, with a further round of fixtures on Saturday, the top of the table nation being crowned the winner.

Ireland will go into it as favourites following valiant performances against England and Wales.

Hosts Italy will be hoping that their win over Serbia, which included a Davide Saita brace, will be a platform that they can improve from.

Serbia are looking for their first win, with Darren Fisher’s side looking to use the longer-format games to gain some momentum.

France U19 team: Start of the European championship on Saturday

The kick-off of the European Under-19 Rugby League Championship will be played on Saturday in Udine, Italy.

Seven teams will take part in this competition (England, France, Ireland, Wales, Italy, Serbia, Ukraine) and will compete on the pitch of the Pasian Di Prato stadium.

There will be three days of action, starting with 20-minute matches between each nation to rank the teams.

The top four teams will then play the championship semi-finals on Tuesday, September 6 (80-minute matches), while the teams ranked 5th to 7th will face each other in 40-minute matches.

The championship final will take place on Saturday, September 10 (kick-off at 6 p.m. local time), preceded by the shield final (at 4 p.m.), contested by the losing semi-finalists.

“Excitement is building among the teams preparing to leave on Thursday September 1, and they are understandably excited to join the Lignano Sabbiadoro camp ,” said ERL chief executive David Butler.

“We look forward to some very competitive matches, but we are already seeing great examples of collaboration between nations who all share the common goal of developing rugby league on the continent.

It’s fantastic to see Ukraine able to hold their own.”

The defending French champions have included South Sydney fullback and Rabbitohs U19 Player of the Year Louis Grossemy in their squad.

“ When Louis came to see us to tell us that he had the opportunity to play for France, we gave him our agreement ,” said Joe O’Callaghan, the Souths manager.

“We think it’s a great opportunity for him to play for France. He’s only 19 and doesn’t know any of his teammates, so we think this experience will be beneficial for his development.

We have a very high opinion of Louis and when he comes back he will have a pre-season with the NRL team”.

European u19s Championship Squads Confirmed

European u19s Championship

The squads for the European Rugby League U19s Championship, set to kick off on Saturday 3 September in the Udine region, Italy, have been announced by the seven competing nations.

There will be three days of action, starting with each nation playing the other in 20-minute games to rank the teams.

The top four will then contest the Championship semi-finals on Tuesday 6 September (80-minute games), whilst the teams ranked 5th to 7th will play each other once in 40-minute clashes on both Tuesday 6 and Saturday 10, with the highest placed team in the three-way competition being presented the European Plate.

The Championship Finals take place on Saturday 10 September (kick off at 18.00 local time), preceded by the Shield final (at 16.00), contested by the losing semi-finalists.

“Excitement is building within the squads who are gearing up for their departures on Thursday 1 September, and they are understandably excited about coming into camp in Lignano Sabbiadoro,” said ERL general manager, David Butler.

“We are looking forward to some very competitive games, but we are already seeing some excellent examples of collaboration between the nations who all share the common goal of growing rugby league across the continent.

It is fantastic to see Ukraine able to take up their spot.”

Defending champions France have included South Sydney backrower and the Rabbitohs U19’s player of the year Louis Grossemy in their squad.

“South Sydney are very supportive of the international game and when Louis came to us and said he had an opportunity to play for France we gave him the thumbs up,” Souths pathways manager Joe O’Callaghan said.

“We believe it is a great opportunity for him to play for France.

He is only 19 and doesn’t know any of his team-mates, so we think it will be great for his development to get that experience. We think very highly of Louis and when he comes back he will have a pre-season with the NRL squad.”

Wales have picked Gethin Thomas from Freemantle Roosters and Serbia included Parramatta’s Vlado Jankovic, and there are number of players across the squads linked to Super League academy sides.
