Get to know your 2026 GIO NSW Under 19s Men

The GIO NSW Under 19s Men will be looking to reclaim the Under 19s Men State of Origin Shield after suffering a one-point defeat to Queensland in 2025.

NSW will take the field at North Sydney Oval tonight looking for a better result in front of their hometown fans.

Coached by True Blue Josh Jackson, get to know your Men’s Squad below:

1. Toby Winter

Club: Newcastle Knights. Position: Fullback.

Winter is a Newcastle junior who has long been regarded as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.

An Australian Schoolboys representative, he impressed during the pre-season before securing a long-term contract extension with the Knights through to 2029.

His rapid rise this year has included an UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final appearance and a NSW Cup debut. His skill, dynamic versatility, and pace make him an important attacking threat.

2. Jope Rauqe

Club: Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Position: Wing.

Rauqe is a towering outside back who has already gained international recognition after being called into the Fiji Bati national squad during last year’s Pacific Championships.

At 191cm, Rauqe is a strong aerial threat and difficult to contain with the ball in hand.

With 23 tries to his name and multiple hat-tricks in his debut Jersey Flegg Cup season in 2025, another big year is on the cards for the 19-year-old.

3. Dayne Jennings

Club: South Sydney Rabbitohs. Position: Centre.

Jennings has emerged as one of South Sydney’s most exciting young outside backs.

An attacking threat with a handy kicking game, he was instrumental during the Rabbitohs’ run to the UNE SG Ball Cup preliminary finals.

His development has already attracted the attention of Wayne Bennett having been named in the Rabbitohs’ NRL squad in Round 15, while he continues to shine in the Jersey Flegg Cup.

4. Marcellus Iakopo

Club: Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Position: Centre.

Iakopo is a powerful outside back who has impressed throughout his development.

After progressing through the Penrith Panthers pathways system, he joined the Bulldogs academy and quickly established himself as a key member of their UNE SG Ball Cup side.

His form earned him a promotion into the Jersey Flegg Cup, where he currently features in the centres and is known for his hard running and tackle-breaking ability.

5. Archie Mesritz

Club: North Queensland Cowboys. Position: Wing.

Mesritz only made the switch to full-time Rugby League this year after an outstanding schoolboy Rugby career.

The former Nudgee College vice-captain helped guide his side to an undefeated First XV premiership before playing a major role in the Townsville Blackhawks’ Mal Meninga Cup title-winning campaign.

With genuine speed, he is one of the most dangerous outside backs in the squad and his explosive plays are a key feature of his game.

6. Onitoni Large

Club: Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. Position: Five-Eighth.

Large has rapidly progressed through the Sea Eagles system after joining the club from the Wests Tigers.

The talented five-eighth earned a place in Manly’s top 30 squad in 2026 and has already gained valuable experience at The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup level.

Combining with Joey Walsh in the halves during their 33-18 victory against Warriors in the NRL Pre-Season Challenge, the future is bright at the Sea Eagles as he develops alongside younger brother Ashton.

7. Carter Mareko

Club: Sydney Roosters. Position: Halfback.

Mareko is a naturally talented playmaker possessing a sharp running game, creative passing, and an intelligent kicking game.

A key figure in the Roosters UNE SG Ball premiership-winning season, he was named Player of the Series before earning selection for NSW City where he also claimed Player of the Match honours after steering the side to a 66-0 win against NSW Country.

The lethal combination of Mareko and Onitoni Large will be one to watch.

8. Ryda Talagi

Club: Parramatta Eels. Position: Prop.

The younger brother of Panthers playmaker Blaize Talagi, Ryda has established himself as a powerful front-row prospect.

Ryda is a damaging forward who utilises his size and power to eat metres through the middle. He is also praised for his strong leadership in defence and has quickly risen through the Eels system.

An Australian Schoolboys Representative, Talagi bypassed extended Junior Representatives duties and has already made the jump into Jersey Flegg Cup and The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

9. Diesel Hagan

Club: Newcastle Knights. Position: Hooker.

An explosive and highly touted dummy-half and one of the co-captains of the GIO NSW Under 19s Men’s team.

Hagan has become one of the standout young players in the Newcastle Knights system.

The Upper Hunter region junior played a key role in the Knights charge to the UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final, and has earned a rapid promotion to the The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup side as he continues to shine in the biggest season of his young career.

Rugby League runs in the family, with father Ben Hagan coaching the Knights’ NSW Women’s Premiership side.

10. Christian Taupau-Moors

Club: Wests Tigers. Position: Prop.

Taupau-Moors has emerged as one of the most promising young forwards in the Wests Tigers system.

The nephew of former Tigers forward Junior Moors, he is known for his powerful carries and ability to generate momentum through the middle.

His development has been recognised as a centrepiece for Benji Marshall’s long-term roster rebuild with the club locking him in to 2028 after making his The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup debut last season.

11. Christopher Petrus

Club: Parramatta Eels. Position: Second Row.

A physically imposing second-rower who hits the line with power and determination.

Recruited into Parramatta Eels development system in 2025,

Petrus has shifted from a superstar winger at UNE Harold Matthews Cup level into an impactful member of the forward pack.

The Australian Schoolboys representative who is also of proud Papua New Guinean heritage, Petrus has made rapid development into the senior ranks at Parramatta while still eligible for Junior Reps.

12. Darcy Smith

Club: Sydney Roosters. Position: Second Row.

Named as the other co-captain for the GIO NSW Under 19s Men, Smith captained the Roosters to the UNE 2026 SG Ball Cup premiership and is highly regarded for his natural leadership qualities.

A strong line-runner with an immense work rate, the hardworking back-rower has led several representative teams throughout his junior career, including NSW City.

Now featuring in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, Smith continues to develop as a future star of the game under the guidance of UNE SG Ball Cup coach and true Blue Boyd Cordner, who he shares many similar attributes with.

13. Thomas Dellow

Club: Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Position: Lock.

Dellow is a skilful lock forward who continues to rise through the Sharks system.

Earning the honour of captaining the Australian Schoolboys side, he was also named Player of the Tournament at the ASSRL National Championships and remains one of the club’s most highly rated prospects.

Contracted until the end of 2027, Dellow has stepped up to Jersey Flegg Cup after a strong junior representatives campaign and will be on the radar at the club for The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

14. Toby Batten

Club: Dolphins. Position: Five-eighth/Halfback.

From Nambucca Heads on the NSW Mid North Coast, Batten is regarded as one of the best up-and-coming playmakers in the country.

After joining the Dolphins pathways system, he has been a consistent performer in the Mal Meninga Cup and continues to progress through the club’s ranks.

A former Australian Schoolboys and North Coast Bulldogs representative, Batten has already featured in NRL trials this year and is currently part of the Dolphins’ extended Queensland Cup squad.

15. Roman Tuaimau

Club: Canberra Raiders. Position: Second Row.

Highly regarded for his high defensive work rate and damaging running style, Tuaimau is an exciting forward prospect who has committed to his development at the Canberra Raiders.

Fast and skilful with his footwork, the young forward grew up playing soccer before making the switch to Rugby League.

Tuaimau earned selection for the Australian Schoolboys team in 2025 and is showing rapid development in Canberra’s senior system.

16. James Finegan

Club: Sydney Roosters. Position: Second Row.

Finegan is carving out his own Rugby League journey coming from a well-known sporting family, with his father Owen a former Wallabies legend.

The edge forward was named Sydney Roosters UNE SG Ball Player of the Year in 2025 and has continued to impress in the 2026 season.

Having most recently scored a grand final double to help the Sydney Roosters claim back-to-back UNE SG Ball Cup premierships, he has been rewarded for his stellar junior representatives form with an NRL train-and-trial contract.

17. Eddy Cayless

Club: Sydney Roosters. Position: Lock.

The son of former Parramatta Eels captain Nathan Cayless, Eddy has emerged as one of the Roosters’ most promising young forwards.

A tireless worker throughout the middle, he has featured across UNE SG Ball Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup and The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup during his development.

His performances earned him a train-and-trial opportunity with the Roosters NRL squad for the 2026 pre-season as the rising lock forward possesses an incredible Rugby League pedigree and is quickly progressing as a future star.

18. Cameron Bamblett

Club: Parramatta Eels. Position: Fullback/Five-eighth.

Bamblett is a highly versatile back-line star developing through the Parramatta Eels.

Initially from the Penrith Panthers system, his versatility, explosive running, game-changing vision and exceptional ball-playing ability makes him the ultimate utility back having played time at both fullback and five-eighth.

The former Australian Schoolboy representative had an outstanding season at fullback for the Eels UNE SG Ball Cup side and been fast-tracked into the Jersey Flegg Cup.

19. Ashton Large

Club: Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. Position: Hooker.

Still only 17, Large has already completed two NRL pre-seasons with the Sea Eagles.

The talented hooker captained some games for the UNE SG Ball Cup side this season and is known for his vision and creativity around the ruck as well as a strong on-field combination with his older brother Onitoni.

His impressive Junior Representatives season was recognised when he claimed the Jake Trbojevic Award for the Junior Male Player of the Year, and Players’ Player for the 2026 season.

20. Talmage Brown

Club: Penrith Panthers. Position: Prop.

An exciting young forward developing through the Penrith Panthers pathways system, the St Dominic’s College product is highly valued for his unrelenting, hard-running style in the middle.

Rewarded UNE Harold Matthews Cup Player of the Year at the Panthers in 2025, he has continued to shine having just played a valuable role in their UNE SG Ball Cup side.

Still only 18 years old, Brown already spent time training with Penrith’s NRL squad and is pushing towards a debut in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

England and Wales will meet in Neath in a fortnight to decide the U16s Four Nations title after both convincingly won their round two games.

England dominated from the off, building a 40-0 half time lead against Ireland in Widnes, fullback Jack Bowden finishing with 18 points from two tries and five goals.

Centre Jonah Carter claimed a hat trick, and Billy Buster-Knight and Jaiden Udbegbe were also on the scoresheet again, fellow try scorer Ryan Cunliffe also impressing in the pack.

Ireland showed commendable courage to open the scoring in the second half, centre Joe Clarke converting his own score.

Wales also started impressively, establishing a 22-point early lead facing Scotland in Merthyr Tydfil and they also led 40-0 at the break. Winger Alfie Davies opened the scoring and finished with three of Wales’s 13 tries, Jack Parrott claiming 16 points, including six goals.

Centre Max Phillips grabbed a brace in the first half and lively scrum half Will Mordecai did likewise in the second.

The game spilled over just before the hour, Danny Jones – who had scored minutes before – being dismissed for striking and Scotland’s Lachlan McKelvey sinbinned for his part in the fray.

Scotland received a penalty after the incident and Reece McAdam kicked it from long range to ensure they had points on the board.

In the U17s friendly international also at Merthyr, a fine second half performance by Wales saw them home 50-28 against Scotland.

The hosts were 20-18 ahead at the end of a tightly fought first half, each side fielding eleven debutants, but two tries in three minutes on the re-start from centre Evan Benjamin, and a further one from Matthew Clatworthy with his second and 20 points, saw Wales home.

Benjamin completed a second half hat trick, hooker Zach Robbins with a first half brace for Wales including opening the scoring.

Declan Smith and Ollie Watkins-Smith’s touchdowns and two Tom Glover goals saw Scotland hit back to lead, Joseph Davies and Finlay Stamford also crossing for the visitors.

An Elliot Williams try and Benjamin goal bringing up the half century for the young Welsh.

The NSWRL is pleased to announce the following players have been selected to represent the Westpac NSW Under 19s Women for the Under 19s Women’s State of Origin match at North Sydney Oval on Thursday 18 June.

The 20-player squad includes seven players from the Westpac NSW Under 19s Women’s team that defeated Queensland last year.

Logan Fletcher (Sydney Roosters), Khyliah Gray (Parramatta Eels), Liesl Hopoate (Sydney Roosters), Ava Jones (Parramatta Eels), Tori Shipton (Illawarra Steelers), Fontayne Tufuga (Parramatta Eels) and Ella Walker (Penrith Panthers).

The squad has been chosen from players from the NRLW, NSW Women’s Premiership and Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s Women).

The Westpac NSW Under 19s Women are the current Shield holders after winning the Under 19s Women’s State of Origin for the past two years.

Wales u16s complete double over Ireland

Wales defeated Ireland in the U16s and Students Four Nations tournaments, in a doubleheader held at the Westmanstown Sports Complex, Dublin.

Their U16s extended their unbeaten run to ten matches with a 64-20 win, the Students triumphing 50-0.

There was nothing between the sides for the opening half hour of the U16s clash, skipper Charley Eatly – who finished with four touchdowns – and hooker Zac Nottingham crossed early.

Jack Parrott converting both to give the visitors an early 12-0 lead; Paddy White, winger Noah Walsh and Max Cooney reply for Ireland, Joseph Clarke converting two to put them 16-12 in front.

Leighton Clarke and Rhys Anthony replied for Wales, but Ireland were only 22-20 adrift when Callum McDonald went over before the break.

The second half was one-way traffic, second rower Eatly superb, while Frazer Redman, Jacob Maund, Scott Hewitt and Nottingham again also went over.

Wales U16s head coach, Tom Marsh, said: “There was some high-quality rugby on display from both teams.

Ireland built momentum well in the first half, in the second, we started to play more to our game plan and completed our sets much better.

“It was also really encouraging to see the continued development of the game in Ireland, with 12 Irish-born players included in their squad.”

Wales students were dominant throughout, skipper, centre Mason Phillips leading the way with four successive touchdowns as the visitors built a 24-0 half time lead.

Wales posted another five tries, including one each from debutants Olly Darlington and Kian Lloyd in the second forty.

“Preventing a never-say-die Ireland from scoring was a great achievement in warm conditions in Dublin,” noted Wales students head coach, Clive Griffiths.

“We now turn our attention to Scotland at Merthyr on Sunday, 7 June. We’re not going to underestimate them as they always give us a competitive match.”

Ireland pathways coach, Wayne Kerr, noted: “It was a tough day for the lads. We had a few out there that hadn’t played league before and it was the team’s first hit out together.

We started well and completed high which was a goal for the team.

“The biggest positive was that the lads never gave up and kept competing for the full 80 minutes, that’s something to bring forward for the rest of the tournament.”

Canada rugby league plan historic summer

It will the busiest summer in their history, with Canada’s men’s, women’s and U19s men’s teams making pioneering tours to Europe.

“Our teams are excited to head over, this is a big moment for the sport here,” said Canada Rugby League Association president, John Cameron.

“In order to get better and climb the rankings associated with that, we need to grow our domestic game, build our youth pipeline and get more varied international experience.

“Canada has a strong European connection as part of its modern founding, so culturally we have many similarities—many of our players have European ancestry.”

The men’s Wolverines arrive first and will take on Norway on Thursday 2 July in Lillestrøm, then head to Scotland to face the Bravehearts on Sunday 5 July in Hawick.

Their final match is the following weekend against Netherlands in Rotterdam on Saturday 11 July. It will be their first visit to Europe since they faced Serbia in September 2019.

“All of the men’s nations are ranked above us so we’re not going to presuppose our performance, but usually unknown opponents on both sides will make for entertaining games,” Cameron commented.

The women’s Ravens will face Wales in Neath on Sunday 19 July, then Scotland at Hawick on Saturday 25 July for the final encounter of their trip.

Having beaten Ireland to third place in the IRL Women’s Rugby League World Series at home last autumn, it presents an opportunity for Canada to measure themselves against the remaining Celtic Nations.

Cameron confirmed: “One key focus for the Ravens – much like the Wolverines – has been building our development pipeline.

Supporting that is our growing international talent which is actively involved in Super League now.

“Our women’s nationals this month in Vancouver is aligned to help identify some of this new talent, in order to involve them going forward.”

All five games will count for world ranking points as senior international matches.

Additionally, Canada’s U19s men’s side will enter the European Rugby League U19s Championship for the first time to be held in July at Font Romeu, France, where they will face Norway (12 July), Greece (15 July) and Ireland (18t July) in the Shield competition.

“Our U19s are the best thing to happen to the CRLA in years,” said Cameron.

“Not only is it giving our Wolverines a constant pipeline, but we’re also attracting talented players and volunteers.

It has also helped field more matches for our domestic teams.

I really need to thank our coaches Rhys Jacks and Stephen Lenahan on developing such a strong group of boys.

“More time on the pitch, with more participants is our overall goal. This not only builds experience but attracts sponsor interest. It also makes for a more sustainable programme.”

He added: “This year we are recording constant activity across all fronts from youth to masters – more games and greater coverage including live streaming of almost all domestic games.”

Blackhawks snatch Meninga Cup thriller

Townsville Blackhawks have capped off a dominant Mal Meninga Cup season (presented by Ford) with a fairy tale finish to their hard-fought grand final against Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Both teams put everything on the line in a gripping contest at Kayo Stadium but it was the Blackhawks who emerged victorious after a clutch plays from star duo Archie Mesritz and Taj Lateo.

With the score locked at 20-20 and extra time seemingly just a minute and a half away, Mesritz ignited the Blackhawks with a brilliant kick return.

The surge put the Townsville team within reach of a one-point field goal, and man of the moment Lateo stepped up with a flat strike that sailed over the cross bar with just 30 seconds remaining.

An exhausted Wynnum team slumped to their knees, but they could hold their heads high after a superb effort.

The Seagulls led 8-0 early before the Blackhawks soared back with the next 20 points.

But when Jordan Hotere crossed and Payton Gifford landed his fourth goal, it was all locked up and the Gulls were in reach of a famous victory.

It wasn’t to be though for the bayside club as the Blackhawks held their nerve to clinch a thriller.

A hat trick of tries from fullback Richard Lui Buch was the highlight as Norway U17s defeated Montenegro 30-8 in Alcoa, Farsund.

“I was impressed with the performance, it was a hard game,” said Norway U17s coach Lars Haigh. “Montenegro were a big physical team but our try line defence was immense. In attack we were a little bit basic but we can work on that. I’m very happy overall.”

He added: “We had a few standout players, Timur Liman seemed to be involved in every tackle, Leander Nesvic was going very well until he was injured and of course Richard Lui Buch was excellent.

We are hoping to play a further game this year at this age group, we’ll train a few more times, but the aim is to continue to improve these players and increase the pool for the national teams.”

Prop Nesvic opened the scoring after 17 minutes, the hosts having repelled early Montenegro pressure, Lui Buch adding to their advantage, Yazan Farjan converting both in a faultless kicking display.

The visitors hit back when Nemanja Durdevac powered through the middle to find the line, Stefan Janjic unable to convert, leaving it 12-4 at the break.

Montenegro capitalised

Montenegro capitalised on a Norwegian error from the restart, hard-working Vasilije Stojanovic going over but Lui Buch halted any hopes of a comeback, leaping out of dummy-half to add his second try.

Sustained pressure saw the visitors camped out on the Norwegian try line for much of the remainder of the half until a pressure relieving penalty allowed Lui Buch to claim his treble.

A final score for Norway saw Hjalmar Birkeland Olsen go over as the whistle sounded, Farjan adding his fifth conversion as the last act of an entertaining game.

Montenegro U17s coach, Aljosa Marinkovic, noted: “There is an obvious difference in experience between the two sides.

Norway knew how to finish near the try line whereas we got a bit excited and we have to do like Norway and play a little bit more with the brain.

“I was very pleased with everybody, they gave their best but especially with the performances of Vasilije Stojanovic and Luka Šimunovic who have come back into the side.

We need to play as many games as possible, and over the next two years we are aiming to play in the European U19s Championships.”

U16 four nations fixtures confirmed

Wales begin their defence of the U16s Four Nations with a trip to Dubin on Saturday 23 May.

All the matches are paired with the Student Four Nations tournament.

“Our Wales U16s team have been working hard and will be aiming to retain their fourth consecutive title,” said Wales RL performance director, Clive Griffiths.

“We will be looking to maximise home advantage with two home games in this year’s competition and we look forward to welcoming big crowds to the games.”

The second round of games take place on Saturday 6 June as England welcome Ireland to Halton Farnworth Hornets while Scotland make the long trip to Merthyr Tydfil the following day.

England Lions programme manager, Alan Davidson, noted: “We will once again take part in the U16s competition with the England Lions team which means that no scholarship or academy players will be eligible for the side.

Giving those young men outside of the professional game the opportunity to showcase their talents and represent their country.”

The action concludes on Saturday 20 June as Ireland visit Hawick to face Scotland, and Wales welcome England to The Gnoll in Neath for what has previously been the deciding game.

“We’re very pleased that our Pathways Programme has again produced more Ireland based players competing than ever before in our U16’s squad, all are looking forward to impressing,” said IRL chair Jim Reynolds.

Barry McGuffog, Scotland RL operations director, added: “The number of Scotland-based players at U16s continues to grow year on year, we’re hoping to progress that into some form of domestic fixtures in 2026.”

England, Scotland and Wales also combining to stage U17s matches, although these will be considered friendlies and not part of a formal competition, making their clashes tripleheaders.

Pairing the competitions also highlights the youth international pathway in place which, from 2027, will also include the biennial U18s Four Nations games.

Rare double on offer at Junior Reps Grand Final Day

The Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights have the opportunity to claim a rare double at the NSW Rugby League Junior Representatives Grand Final Day at Leichhardt Oval tomorrow (Saturday 2 May).

Both clubs will feature in the finals of the UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s Boys) and the UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s Men) on a day that showcases the future of Rugby League and the depth of talent emerging across both male and female pathways in NSW.

In the other matches, the Central Coast Roosters will take on Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup (Under 17s Girls), and Parramatta Eels will clash with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s Women).

The Bulldogs return to the Grand Finals stage after claiming the inaugural Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup premiership in 2024.

With the two sides yet to meet in 2026, a clash between the third and fourth placed teams shape as one of the most unpredictable deciders of the day.

In the UNE Harold Matthews Cup, the Roosters stand on the brink of history as they chase their first Under 17s Boys premiership since the competition’s inception 56 years ago, while the Knights have returned to the decider looking for revenge after falling short last year.

The Eels will be striving for consecutive premierships in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup competition, following a dominant finals campaign, while the Sharks will be chasing their first competition win since 2018.

The Grand Final Day will wrap up with the Roosters aiming to secure back-to-back UNE SG Ball Cup premierships under the guidance of newly-appointed Westpac NSW Blues assistant coach Boyd Cordner.

The Knights will continue their inspirational run from seventh place into the decider.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said the Junior Representatives Grand Final Day highlights the strength of the development systems in NSW and the commitment of all of the clubs to nurturing the future stars of Rugby League.

“In our view they are the best development competitions in the Rugby League world,” Trodden said.

“The Grand Final Day is a great opportunity to showcase the incredible talent emerging across our male and female pathways.

“It is also great to see our senior representative players giving back and investing in the future of our game with a host of past NRL players and True Blues taking on coaching roles in the pathways competitions.”

Sharks Tarsha Gale win their way into the Grand Final

Two tries to winger Chloe Shepherd and another to centre partner Makayla Vakauta has propelled the Tarsha Gale Cup Sharks into the competition Grand Final following a narrow 14-12 victory over Newcastle.

After the two teams went to the break with the scores locked together at 10-all, the Knights went ahead courtesy of a penalty goal, however a second four-pointer from Shepherd would prove to be enough to seal the result.

The Sharks were forced to show plenty of character and resilience when Sophia Brightwell was sin-binned with six minutes of the match remaining.

However they would defend their line and hold firm in booking themselves a place in the Tarsha Gale Cup decider next weekend.

Waiting for the Under-19 Cronulla girls will be the Parramatta Eels, who scored a comprehensive 28-6 win over the Indigenous Academy in the other Grand Final qualifying match.

The two Grand Final teams met once during the 2026 season, the Eels scoring a narrow 10-6 win back in round two.

The Sharks v Eels Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final is scheduled to kick off at 1.30pm at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.
