Blackhawks snatch Meninga Cup thriller

Townsville Blackhawks have capped off a dominant Mal Meninga Cup season (presented by Ford) with a fairy tale finish to their hard-fought grand final against Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Both teams put everything on the line in a gripping contest at Kayo Stadium but it was the Blackhawks who emerged victorious after a clutch plays from star duo Archie Mesritz and Taj Lateo.

With the score locked at 20-20 and extra time seemingly just a minute and a half away, Mesritz ignited the Blackhawks with a brilliant kick return.

The surge put the Townsville team within reach of a one-point field goal, and man of the moment Lateo stepped up with a flat strike that sailed over the cross bar with just 30 seconds remaining.

An exhausted Wynnum team slumped to their knees, but they could hold their heads high after a superb effort.

The Seagulls led 8-0 early before the Blackhawks soared back with the next 20 points.

But when Jordan Hotere crossed and Payton Gifford landed his fourth goal, it was all locked up and the Gulls were in reach of a famous victory.

It wasn’t to be though for the bayside club as the Blackhawks held their nerve to clinch a thriller.

Queensland Under 17 representative pathway matches between City and Country finished in a deadlock over the weekend.

City won the girls’ match 40-12, before Country hit back to claim the boys’ clash 36-8.

Incredibly, both City and Country accumulated 48 points across the two games at Burleigh, recording the exact same number of tries and goals.

In the girls’ match, City prop Sianah Misa scored two second-half tries in a powerhouse display.

City led 18-4 at half-time and fought off a gallant Country comeback which looked threatening following tries to Diaz Bowen and Hayley Wainwright.

In the boys’ match, Country fullback Derek Ahwang was in scintillating form, crossing for four tries in the 28-point win.

Country led 28-0 at half-time, but City refused to back down in the second half with Jordan Tuuga-Stevenson and Toetu Misipati Toetu both crossing the line.

Queensland Rugby League has today announced the City and Country Under 17 squads ahead of this week’s pathway activity on the Gold Coast.

Confirmation of the squad lists follow the completion of the hotly-contested Harvey Norman Under 17 (female) and Cyril Connell Cup (male, presented by Ford) seasons, which culminated with grand finals over the weekend.

Game ll – Brisbane May 14 LOCK IT IN

Players and coaches will this week enter their respective camps and begin preparing for this Sunday’s matches at Burleigh’s UAA Park.

Both the girls’ (11.15am kick off) and boys’ (12.35pm kick off) games will be played before the Hostplus Cup fixture between the Burleigh Bears and Norths Devils.

QRL Junior reps grand final results

Burleigh Bears, Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Brisbane Tigers all lifted silverware at Kayo Stadium on Saturday.

The Bears took out the Harvey Norman Under 17 grand final with a strong 30-12 win over the Townsville Blackhawks.

Isabella Prior scored twice for the Bears, who were also well served by lock and player of the match Lyvana Edmonds.

The Cyril Connell Cup grand final (presented by Ford) between Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Norths Devils produced some entertaining rugby league, with the Seagulls coming home with a hard-fought 26-16 victory.

Wynnum halfback Calvin Harris-Tavita was electric behind a tough forward pack, led superbly by player of the match Tyce Perren.

In the Harvey Norman Under 19s, Tigers hooker Enah Desic was in inspirational from, crossing for a try and sealing the player of the match honours through her hard work in the middle as the Tigers ran out 32-22 victors.

A club which has consistently produced star talents such as Carl Webb, Brodie Croft and Beau Fermor has turned its attention to outside of the rugby league scene.

The Dalby Devils have again shown the power of a community’s willingness to give back, raising over $10,000 during their annual under 17 charity round held on Saturday.

This year, the funds will support the McGrath Foundation’s cancer care nursing services in Dalby, with the initiative proudly led by the club’s under 17 boys and girls sides.

Each year, the clubs under 17s select a cause close to their hearts, driving fundraising efforts.

It’s a long-standing tradition that reinforces gratitude to the Dalby community and teaches players about the dedication behind the scenes from club volunteers and committee members.

Players hit their goal through jersey sponsorships, bake stalls, and first try scorer sweeps across both matches.

The day was boosted by the support of visiting teams Southern Suburbs and Valleys, who also embraced the cause.

The Devils have a strong track record of raising funds for important causes, previously backing the Carl Webb Foundation and RUOK.

St Patrick’s & Mackay breaks Confraternity drought

One of the most successful schools in Confraternity Carnival history broke a 22-year drought today in a dramatic finish to the prestigious schoolboys’ carnival in Rockhampton.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay – the school of State of Origin players Daly Cherry-Evans, Wendell Sailor and Shannon Hegarty – outlasted gallant Padua College, Kedron 10-8 in a gripping Confraternity Shield final.

The decider came down to a scrambling finish as Padua College peppered the Mackay line – their last play went through nine sets of hands and included a regathered kick – but the Brisbane team was unable to haul in a 10-0 halftime deficit.

The win restored St Patrick’s College to the top of a Confraternity Carnival they once dominated. In a 16-year period from 1988, St Patrick’s won eight Shield titles including five in a row.

But they had not won since defeating St Mary’s College, Toowoomba in the 2003 decider on the Gold Coast.

This is the 45th Confraternity Carnival, drawing 56 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

The Carnival is run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League and was hosted by The Cathedral College.

This “Confro” was difficult to predict.

The Shield semi-finalists included teams from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and Brisbane. And the mixture of young squad and schools who had come off their rugby union seasons made it guesswork.

The carnival came down to a Mackay team led by cane farmer and rookie coach Shane Mau making the most of its opportunities in wins over Confro powerhouses Ignatius Park College, Townsville, hosts The Cathedral College and the brave Padua College team.

“That was so nail-biting,” Mau said. “We were riding that finish because it was just such a close game.

“We got to the front but Padua came back. They are just a great side. They never give in and we knew we would have to work really hard to beat them.

“To be a part of this is just so special for everyone involved. Our squad is just a great group of young men.

“We’ve got some really good players in our team who are well known in schoolboy footy but we also have a full squad that just never stopped trying all week.

The win comes down to the whole squad.”

Halfback Adam McSherry, contracted to the NRL Dolphins, is one of those high-profile schoolboys who caused trouble for St Patrick’s rivals across the week.

McSherry created one of the first line breaks as St Patrick’s dominated the first half before Padua College’s reply.

Five-eighth and player-of-the-carnival Damon Humphrys, contracted to the NRL Bulldogs, sparked the Padua attack as the southerners scored twice in the second half.

Padua College had played its first rugby league game of the year in Monday’s opening pool round after claiming the Associated Independent Colleges’ First XV rugby union title. St Patrick’s had been involved in their regional rugby league competition.

Goal-kicking proved the difference with McSherry’s single conversion of St Patrick’s two tries enough to land St Patrick’s ninth Shield triumph.

The Bob Lindner Trophy, for the bottom tier of Division 1, stayed locally as Rockhampton Grammar School claimed the title on countback after a 20-all draw with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate went to St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane 18-12 against AIC rival Villanova College, Coorparoo.

Another AIC school – St Edmund’s College, Ipswich – claimed the Division 2 Confraternity Bowl in an 18-0 victory over All Souls St Gabriel’s College, Charters Towers.

Division 3 was again hard-fought between teams from across the state. The highest-ranking Confraternity Cup went to Townsville’s Ryan Catholic College with a 16-0 win over McAuley College, Beaudesert.

The Confraternity Challenge was won by St Mary’s College, Cairns, defeating St John’s School, Roma 20-16.

The inaugural Division 4 final was fought out between Brisbane Catholic Education schools Trinity College, Beenleigh and Emmaus College, Jimboomba.

Trinity College won the Confraternity Classic 10-4, surviving a last-minute attacking raid by Emmaus College.

Queensland win U19s State of Origin

Queensland have defeated New South Wales 23-22 in a tightly contested U19 State of Origin clash at Sunshine Coast Stadium, sealed by a clutch second-half response after withstanding a late NSW comeback.

The Maroons controlled the early stages, racing to a 13-6 lead at halftime off the back of first-half tries to Cooper Bai and Zac Garton.

A 34th-minute field goal from Coby Black proved critical, nudging Queensland’s lead beyond a converted try right before the break.

Black then extended the lead himself in the 36th minute with a well-timed try, putting Queensland up 17-6.

But New South Wales found their rhythm shortly after, scoring three tries in quick succession, through Stanley-Traill, Hopwood and Allen, to turn the game on its head and lead 22-17.

With the game slipping, Queensland regrouped. In the 63rd minute, Prestyn Laine-Sietu crashed over to level the scores, before Javon Andrews nailed the conversion to reclaim the lead.

That 23-22 margin would hold for the final seven minutes, despite pressure from the Blues.

Head coach Darius Boyd was pleased with the result and the preparation that led to it.

“The boys worked hard all week and really bought into everything we were trying to do,” Boyd said.

“That one-point win doesn’t happen without the effort they put in during camp.”

It was a composed and disciplined Queensland performance for most of the game, and when the contest got tight late, they responded with the key play that mattered.

Queensland Under 19 men’s squad announced

Queensland Rugby League has today announced the Queensland Maroons Under 19 men’s squad ahead of Thursday week’s clash against New South Wales at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Home soil – Game day with the Maroons

The 20-player squad will enter camp this Friday at Caloundra, where head coach Darius Boyd will team up with assistant coaches Andrew McCullough and Jesse Maclean to get the best out of the young Queenslanders.

The Queensland squad includes three players who took part in last year’s representative clash.

Cody Black, Zac Garton and Sam Stephenson are the players backing up, with the trio’s experience set to provide a major boost for the home team.

A parochial Queensland crowd is expected for the Origin Rookies clash, which will follow the Under 19 women’s match between the two fierce rivals.

Tickets are selling fast for the June 19 double header.

NSW Under 19s Women’s State of Origin squad announced

The NSWRL is pleased to announce the Westpac NSW Under 19s Women’s squad has been named for the Women’s State of Origin Under 19s match at the Sunshine Coast Stadium in Queensland on Thursday 19 June.

The 20-player squad includes seven players from last year’s team which defeated Queensland 46-4 at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney – Ryvrr-Lee Alo, Indie Bostock, Evah McEwen, Evie McGrath, Maria Paseka, Kasey Reh and Bronte Wilson.

The team includes eight players from Westpac Tarsha Gale Minor Premiers Illawarra Steelers, and five from Premiers Parramatta Eels.

The Westpac NSW Under 19s Women will be coached by Courtney Crawford, who coaches the Illawarra Steelers in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s), with Ryan Walker (Parramatta Eels) and Melissa Spero (Sydney Roosters) appointed as her assistants.

The squad will come into camp on Friday 13 June and train at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park before heading to the Sunshine Coast on Monday 16 June.
