France claim European u19s title

France claimed their second European U19s title, comprehensively defeating holders England 48-12 in the deciding game at the CREPS high performance facility, Font Romeu in the Pyrenees, to end the tournament unbeaten.

England scored within nine seconds through prop Jake Lerigo, but the hosts led 26-12 at the break and were excellent in the second period keeping their rivals scoreless and posting tries from stand off Tom Zitter, with a brace, Ilan Boualem and Charly Martinez.

“For us it is amazing,” said France head coach Remi Casty.

“We have waited a long time for this, we lost the last two finals and tried hard to put that right.

England was tough in the first half but we stuck to our plan, won the collisions and got into positions to score.

“We have a really good group and they deserve to be European Champions.

The event has been incredible for all the teams, so well organized, wonderful facilities, quality food, everything was good and we showed France can stage a wonderful tournament.”

England led 12-6 after 20 minutes, but with Zitter impressive France centre Giodarno Descalzi’s first half hat trick gave his side the edge and they dominated thereafter.

“It wasn’t to be, we worked hard but France had some really strong, physical athletes across the park,” said England head coach Gary Hewer.

“They wore us down coming in wave after wave, and it was one of those days when we were hanging in at times.

We made them work hard for their win, the lads represented us well, so I’m proud.”

In the other round three matches, Wales finished third when they defeated Scotland 58-28, scoring ten tries all from different players.

Rhys Hughes, Jacob Morris, Joshua Gabrielson, Jacob Jones, Oscar Jones and Ethan Williams all went over in the first half to establish a winning 34-8 lead.

Scotland battled bravely to the end despite the sin binning of Max Erasmus around the hour mark.

In the relegation encounter, an astonishing seven tries from hooker Cruz Death saw Ukraine overcome Serbia 54-36, for whom Kai Saric claimed a hat trick. Ukraine’s Zac Gedz finished with 22 points from two tries and seven goals.

France, England and Wales pick up wins in opening round of European U19s Championships

England, France and Wales made impressive starts to the U19s European Championship in the first round of matches held at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the French Pyrenees yesterday (Sunday).

Full back Eligh Wilkinson scored a first half hat trick and landed seven goals as holders England defeated Ukraine 70-8, Rio Walker and Zac Bennett each with two of their total of 14 tries. England head coach, Gary Hewer, commented:

“The boys have responded really well to the hot conditions and given a thorough performance against a very resilient Ukraine side who never stopped for the full 80 minutes.

“From a coaching point of view, it’s disappointing to concede a try but the effort and determination that the Ukrainians put in, and with the friendship and bonds we’ve created over the last four or five years, they deserved it.”

Hewer added: “We’ll utilise the whole squad over our group games but some of them put their hands up today showing what they can offer.”

Hooker Cruz Death claimed Ukraine’s late try, head coach Artur Martyrisian, noted: “It was a good experience for our team. We have not had a lot of time to train together and set aside our domestic championship because so many players are in the army.

“Great thanks to our heritage players because, without them, we might not have been able to participate.”

Leny Stacul was the French star with four tries as they beat Scotland 96-6. The host nation crossed 16 times in all, back rower Adrian De La Rose with a try treble, Thibault Guttierez kicking a perfect 15 conversions.

Scotland were reduced to 12 men in the 36th minute following a sending off.

In the third match, Wales held on to deny Serbia 52-30, Regan Preece with three tries and Kevan Phillips claiming 24 points from two tries and eight out of nine goals.

Wales head coach, Gary Dunn said of the victory: “I was pleased with the result more than the performance, there are loads of aspects to improve on.

“There were some good individual tries, and I can’t fault any of the effort, but we need to analyse this before we face England on Wednesday, Serbia were a little unknown to us.”

Serbia had three players sinbinned, scrum half Tyson Walker with two of their tries and a total of 18 points.

“I’m proud of the boys, both domestic and heritage players,” noted head coach Vladislav Dedic.

“We had to rally dig deep against a good side. The sinbins harmed us but when it was 13 on 13, we were the better side. We need to work on our discipline.”

Greece and Canada emerged victorious from the first round of European U19s Shield matches, held at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the Pyrenees, France yesterday (Sunday).

Alex McGrath, who claimed 18 of Greece’s points, and Jonathon Armatas each registered two tries, the Greeks strong in the second half to win 38-22 after Ireland had led 14-6 at the break, Joseph Gill with two of their five tries along with a double from scrum half Finn Maguire.

Fullback Oliver Lenahan led the way for Canada with three tries and five goals on their debut in the competition as they beat Norway 46-32, Kristoffer Gradert with a brace of tries in response, Joshua Silverstone-Utheim with a try and four goals.

Canada head coach, Stephan Lenahan, commented: “We are so happy to be here and grateful for the opportunity for our players to showcase what we’re building in Canada. To get a win in that fashion is an unbelievable experience for the boys and coaching staff.”

Opposite number Joshua Hornby said: “I’m really proud of the boys, they gave everything, they’ve stepped up, really put their hands up and they are going to keep working hard for this tournament.”

European rugby league u19s championship format and fixtures announced

European Rugby League has confirmed the format and fixtures for the biennial U19s European Championship which will take place at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the Pyrenees, France in July.

A record ten nations will participate, split into two competitions.

The Championship will be contested by England, France, Scotland, Serbia, Ukraine and Wales – the five participants from the 2024 event in Belgrade and Wales who were the next best performing side in the 2022 event having missed the most recent tournament.

Canada together with Greece, Ireland, and Norway, who are all either new or returning after an absence from the tournament, will do battle for the European Shield, with the winner guaranteed promotion to the 2028 event.

Subject to the number of nations applying for that, there may be relegation from this season’s Championship.

“Having ten nations competing has been challenging in terms of formatting and logistics, but it has been a great problem to have, and I’m delighted to see the tournament continuing to grow,” commented ERL chair Dean Andrew.

In the Championship, the nations have been drawn into two groups of three based on results from the previous tournament.

England, as defending champions

England, as defending champions, are the first seed and are joined by Scotland (3) and Serbia (5) in Pool A. Hosts France are in Pool B as the second seed, with Ukraine (4) and Wales (6).

Each will play the three nations in the opposite group, with results merged into one league table and the first placed team awarded the Championship title. The Shield will see each nation play the other once, and the side which leads the league table on conclusion will take the trophy.

The matches will be played over three days, five per day, at the state-of-the-art sporting facility which will also see the squads stay on site.

The hosts open their campaign on Sunday 12 July against Scotland in a repeat of 2024’s feisty semi-final, whilst England face Ukraine in another semi-final repeat and Wales take on Serbia.

Round two

Round two on Wednesday 15 July sees England taking on Wales, Scotland face Ukraine and France do battle with Serbia.

The final round on Saturday 18 July, will see Serbia take on Ukraine and Scotland will be seeking to overturn Wales after losing recent clashes.

The final match will see France take on England in what could be a tournament decider, the previous three encounters between them having a margin of less than seven points.

In Pool B, on day one, Greece will make their debut against Ireland, while Norway come up against Canada, before Greece meet Canada in round two as Norway face Ireland. The final day will see Norway and Greece open the proceedings before Canada and Ireland do battle.

Andrew added: “Several of the nations have told me how important the tournament has been to both inspiring its youth players to work hard and achieve selection, but also to their player pathways into their senior teams.

“Thanks to early organisation by the French Rugby League Federation, we’ve been able to work further in advance to give them all greater preparation time than they have experienced in previous years and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the fruits of that on the field.”

European rugby league u19s championship expands to 10 nations

The fourth European Rugby League U19s Championship will expand to a record ten nations when it takes place at the Centre de Ressources, d’Expertise et de Performance Sportive (CREPS), Font Romeu in the Catalonian Pyrenees between 10 and 19 July 2026.

Norway and Greece will make their tournament debuts, while Wales and Ireland return to the Championship after last competing in 2022 in Italy. Then, Wales achieved a bronze medal in the Championship and Ireland were crowned Shield champions.

Rugby League Norge president, Anne Haigh, commented: “We have been developing our youth programme for some time and played several games at both U16s and U19s already. It is time that we tested ourselves in a competitive environment and give our youth players the opportunity to experience such big a tournament. We’re very much looking forward to travelling to France and being part of the event.”

“Its great news for the Greek Rugby League Federation that we are able to move forward and compete in the European Rugby League U19s Championship in 2026,” said GRLF official,

Terry Liberopoulos. “We are aiming to further progress and become full members of International Rugby League, and a key part depends on the growth of our youth programme. Having the opportunity to represent their country will be a massive motivator for the young people playing rugby league in Greece.”

The quartet join reigning champions England, hosts France, Scotland, Serbia, Ukraine and USA, the young Hawks continuing their participation from the 2024 tournament in Belgrade when they made their bow, the Americas coming under ERL jurisdiction.

France won the 2018 tournament with a narrow 26-24 victory over England in the final but were beaten 14-12 in 2022’s decider by England, the English going on to become back-to-back champions in 2024 after coming from behind against France to triumph 15-8.

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to grow the competition to ten nations,” said ERL chair Dean Andrew.

“The appetite for youth rugby league in Europe is growing and each of the competing nations is built on the back of active youth programmes in the respective countries showing that they are on solid foundations and thinking about their future supply of players.

The U19s Championship is always an exciting event and adding a further dimension to it with new competitors will generate even more interest.”

The format and fixtures for the European Rugby League U19s Championships will be confirmed in early 2026.

In the two ranking games to complete the European U19s Championship in Belgrade, unlimited substitutions ensured that all squad members were given a run and to help counter the week’s considerable heat.

A hat trick try from USA centre Siaosi Koloamatangi two minutes from time ensured a 26-22 win over determined Ukraine, the conditions cooler after morning rain.

“We came here not knowing what to expect or how our boys would go but to win two of our three games is very pleasing,” said USA Young Hawks head coach, George Tupou.

This was a tough game

“This was a tough game but we managed to win it and this brings us a lot of attention and a hopefully a wider pool of talent, it’s getting our name out there.”

Ukraine lost influential Ryan Jurkans, who was injured in a tackle after the game’s opening break away in the first minute but they opened the scoring when Ryslan Lipisii created the space for Arsen Havdo to burrow his way over.

Drayson Moliga returned a penalty kick that failed to find touch half-way to spectacularly dive between the posts, giving Lidarius Moananu an easy shot on goal to nose USA in front.

Koloamatangi latched onto a sublime offload to move USA further ahead and added his second three minutes later, Michael Fonua converting the first.

Ihor Yefanov stepped and dummied his way into the corner for Ukraine to keep them in touch, adding a superb conversion from the touchline to make it 16-10 at the interval.

In the 45th minute, Popeliuk Valerii angled his run to the posts, Yefanov levelling, and Andrii Mordovanets capitalised on a USA mix up at the back from a kick for Vitaliy Bycharskyi to add an easy conversion.

Isaac Fonua hit back for USA on the hour mark, diving into the corner from brother Michael’s pass, but Moananu was unable to convert. Koloamatangi had the final word, just latching onto a kick into the in goal to settle the outcome, giving Chris Malo an easy shot on goal.

Yefanov was sent off for disputing the decision, leaving Ukraine shorthanded for the final two sets of a superb game.

Ukraine U19s coach, Ihor Yurkin, commented: “It was a great game, we tried our best throughout and even though we lost this – and the whole tournament – has been a great experience for our boys.”

After the tournament formalities, the Ukraniain squad left on a two day bus journey back home.

Scotland proved to be too strong in their final match, defeating hosts Serbia 56-0 in a contest not without controversy.

Jacob Grierson crossed for Scotland’s second try in the 12th minute but was then sent off for punching.

Serbia’s Sasa O’Flynn dispatched to the sin bin for his part in the incident which was also placed on report – but the Scots took the setback in their stride.

“It was an impressive win for the boys,” said Scotland U19 coach Mark Milnes.

It was a really gritty victory

‘It was a really gritty victory and great to see a lot of young lads make their debuts.

We have a development programme in place and hopefully this is the start of something.”

Frazer Murray opened the scoring before Grierson dropped the ball over line prior to his try and red card and, with both sides a man down, Tom Gray and Harry Roper went over, Michael Myles perfect with the boot.

With Serbia restored to 13 men they showed more promise and pressure, camping out on Scotland’s line for several sets but couldn’t make it pay, Bailey Schneider extending Scotland’s lead.

Centre Murray posted his brace a minute into the second half and Jack Suddick found his way to the line ten minutes later, Oli Brady on successful kicking duties.

A powerful run from 40m out by prop Isaac Reid added further points just after the hour mark, Isaac Jepson crossing on the next set.

Scotland’s tenth try came from a long Hayden Cumming break, Maxwell Shelton backing up for the touchdown.

Serbia coaching consultant, Darren Fisher, said: “It’s been a great competition overall and for our boys it’s been a great learning curve.

It’s been good to see us put some structure in our game as the competition went on. We’re pretty pleased despite the results.”

England to face France in European u19s Championship Final – reports

Holders England Community Lions will play France at the FK Radnicki Stadium, Belgrade on Saturday (kick off 6pm, local time) to decide the winners of the 2024 European U19s Championship.

It is a repeat of the 2022 decider in Italy which the Lions won 14-12, however, in the previous tournament – also held in the Serbian capital in 2018 – the French emerged victorious 26-24.

England qualified with a 52-4 win over Ukraine in the first semi final, posting nine tries, Marcus Geener and Daniel Knott both with doubles, on another swelteringly hot day.

“The scoreline doesn’t represent the hard work the Ukrainians put into that game,” said England U19s head coach Gary Hewer.

“It was extremely tough and they never stopped coming at us, they really dug deep and caused us several threats.

“We’ve worked hard on execution and taking our chances and that showed. We came with one aim, to win the tournament, and we’ve now got that opportunity.”

Ukraine led thanks to an early Ihor Yefanov penalty but England were 30-4 up at the break, the pick of their tries from scrum half Devan Sharp who showed three dummies to jink his way over.

To their enormous credit Ukraine kept England out for the third quarter but succumbed to three late long range tries.

Ukraine U19s head coach, Dan Beardshaw, commented:

“We were against a well-organised, experienced side who are so good at what they do but I’m so proud of the efforts of my players, especially in scramble defence.

“For 20 minutes of the second half the score was 0-0 and we caused them a lot of problems. Attacking-wise, we’re not yet smart enough but the boys are going to take huge experience from that for the next game.”

In the other semi final, France had to work incredibly hard to overcome a gallant Scotland side who were in contention until two minutes from time, when Wassim Mouelhi’s try and Mateo Jimenez-Lopez’s fifth conversion saw their side home 30-18.

“It was as competitive as we expected,” said France U19s head coach Remi Casty. “It was red hot and there was a lot of indiscipline and that is something we are going to have to change for the final.”

In a feisty clash, five players were sinbinned in all, three for the French who took a first minute lead through Giovanni Descalzi Ganthier. They were 16-6 in front at the break thanks to Yllan Mongay picking up a loose ball and Baptiste Pourchi pouching a clever kick to the corner, hooker Bailey Schneider replying for the young Bravehearts.

France eased out to a 16-point advantage at the start of the second half but quickfire touchdowns to Jacob Grierson and Oscar Ellicott-McCulloch set up the dramatic finish.

Scotland U19s head coach, Leigh Beattie, noted: “We knew it would be a tough ask, but we had a gameplan and we stuck to it very, very well. The desire and heart the lads showed was amazing and they deserve all the plaudits.”

USA Young Hawks

In the opening game of the day, USA Young Hawks, in their first tournament, finished fifth overall after defeating Serbia 40-12, scoring three tries in a blistering opening 14 minutes. George Tupou, USA Young Hawks head coach, said:

“Serbia are a big team but we had better preparation this time, came ready to play and the boys showed their desire out there.”

Logan Myers, Drayson Moliga and impressive stand off Chris Malo with the first of his hat trick all crossed inside a quarter of an hour, Filip Cirkovic stopping the onslaught with his score.

Two Malo tries in ten minutes after the break ensured the win, Edin Mehmedi restoring some pride for the hosts when he powered his way through to score between the posts.

“We were better than our last performance,” commented Serbia U19s head coach Vladislav Dedic. “We showed up, scored two good tries and battled through the heat.”

On Saturday’s finals day, USA will face Ukraine (kick off 2pm) and Serbia take on Scotland (kick off 4pm) in ranking matches before the final.

Ukraine defeat Serbia in 2024 European u19s championship opener

In searing heat Ukraine defeated Serbia 24-4 at the FK Radnicki Stadium, Belgrade in the first quarter final of the 2024 European U19s Championship. The Ukrainians led 16-0 at the break and Ryan Jurkans’ try just before the hour sealed a merited win.

“It’s a terrific result for us, the boys got what they deserved,” said Ukraine U19s head coach Dan Beardshaw.

“It was tough conditions, the boys have understandably not had much time together and made huge sacrifices to go into camp. They are great people with a wonderful work ethic and love wearing their badge.

It’s a young squad, there are some 17-year-olds in it and still a work in progress, but they just want to learn and are keen for rugby league.

A tournament like this is really exciting for them.”

Early pressure from Ukraine was turned into points as centre Klim Malyshev finished a passing move on the left hand side, Ihor Yefanov adding the conversion.

The conditions meant understandable errors, Serbia’s Luka Bojicic bundled into touch as he made a break for the hosts.

Ukraine extended their lead when hooker Arsen Havdo dived out of dummy-half and emphasising their early dominance, prop Maksym Harmash crashed through as half time approached.

Serbia began the second period strongly, hooker Filip Nesic burrowing over from close in to get them on the board, but Jurkans exploited left edge again for the game breaking score, Vitalii Bycharskyi adding a towering conversion from the touchline.

Yefanov kicked a late penalty to extend the margin of victory.

Serbia U19 head coach, Vladislav Dedic, commented:

“It was tough but our boys showed that they could defend. We made some errors on attack and that, ultimately, cost us the game.

We had some positives and will be better for the rest of the tournament.”

Ukraine will now face England’s Community Lions in the first semi-final on Wednesday (kick off 4pm local time), while Serbia will next play the loser of tomorrow’s rearranged quarter-final between Scotland and USA in a ranking game.

In the curtain raiser, England Community Lions U19s beat Serbia U21s 52-4,in a game played in three periods of 20 minutes.

Sam Murtagh and Joshua Langley both scored two of the Lions’ ten tries in total, Henry Ogden, Daniel Knott, Tom Farren, Fletcher Holgate, Joshua Blinkhorn and Marcus Geener also crossing.

Andrei Marinkovic replied for the young Serbs.

England U19s coach, Gary Hewer, noted:

“We handled the conditions very well, our completion rates were high which was reflected in the score line. Fair credit to the Serbians who are inexperienced at this level, they stuck at it.”

Squads arrive in Belgrade for European u19 Championship

The six nations competing in the 2024 Rugby League European Championship have arrived in the Serbian capital Belgrade. The tournament opens with quarter-final games tomorrow (Sunday) between Serbia and Ukraine, followed by Scotland versus USA.

Defending champions England’s Community Lions enter at the semi-final stage to take on either Serbia or Ukraine on Wednesday 17 July, while France – favoutites after their recent win over England Academy – will face the winner of Scotland and USA, as they bid to regain the title which they won in 2018.

The two losing quarter-finalists will meet in the 5th vs 6th place play-off game.

The final day of competition takes place on Saturday 20 July, with the championship final while the other teams who have not yet met will play in grading games for the 2026 tournament.

“We’re very excited for kick off on Sunday,” said ERL general manager David Butler.

“As well as producing some very competitive and entertaining rugby league, the 2022 tournament in Italy also created a sense of friendship and camaraderie between the competing teams and I’m sure that we will see both in good measure this time around in Belgrade.

The Serbia Rugby League Federation has worked very hard on the ground to prepare for the tournament, and I am sure that everyone competing is going to enjoy their hospitality.”

USA Young Hawks make their debut at this level with the bulk of their squad coming from the Utah area which is the first to inaugurate domestic youth competition, while Pheonix Death (Mona Vale Raiders) and Ryan Jurkans (Singleton Greyhounds) travel from Australia to represent Ukraine, and Hayden Cumming (Mackay Magpies) and Bailey Schneider (Manly Sea Eagles) will play for Scotland.
