There was a moment at the end of last year’s Langer Trophy campaign where everything changed for Ipswich State High gun Gabriel Satrick.

The boy from Yarrabah, who gave up everything he knew and a comfortable life back home to chase an NRL dream, realised what he was doing wasn’t cutting it.

The 17-year-old described it as not just a change of routine, or game plan, he believed it was an entire mindset shift.

The dynamic dummy-half capped off his incredible breakout schoolboys league campaign on Wednesday when he was named the Peter Sterling Medallist as the best player in the NRL Schoolboys Cup this season.

The Peter Sterling medal, which is determined by points system across the entire finals series.

The winners list reads like a who’s who of rugby league royalty including Sterling, Ben Elias, Greg Alexander, Jason Taylor, Adam Reynolds and in more recent years Payne Haas, David Fifita and Tom Dearden.

The medal win capped off a fantastic year for Satrick which included winning the NRL Schoolboys Cup with Ipswich, the Australian Secondary Schools Championships with Queensland and being named in the Australian Schoolboys team which tours Fiji next month.

But by his admission, it took hitting rock bottom before he could rise to the top.

“Last year, we lost in the semi-finals (of the Langer Trophy) to Marsden (State High), I felt so bad about it,” Satrick said.

“I had to change that.

“My whole mindset changed, I did everything 100 per cent, and I worked as hard as I could. I had a really big pre-season, I wanted to get my fitness up and just work hard.

“It feels good (to be where I am), it is hectic.”

Each day as he slogged it out in the unforgiving Queensland heat over the summer, it didn’t take much for Satrick to stay motivated.

He had a devoted family 1500 kilometres away who had sacrificed everything to give him a chance.

“My mum and dad would be very proud of me, they sent me down here crying to chase my goal. I did this for them,” he said.

“They couldn’t make it down (for the grand final), because of work and stuff. But I know they would have been watching from home. The whole family would have been together watching from one house.

“I don’t know when I get to go back home, but I know everyone will be there when I do.”

Ipswich State High coach Josh Brethereton couldn’t hide his pride in the playmaker who was a key part of their 32-6 triumph over NSW juggernaut Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

“He is the discovery of the year, he has had an unbelievable season and should be immensely proud of what he has achieved,” Brethereton said.

“To have his name as a Peter Sterling Medallist, is just an incredible thing. When you go back and look at the list of the names on that medal, it is very high class and he has just joined rare air as far as schoolboy footy is concerned.”

Dolphins looking for consistency as they prepare for Magpies

Redcliffe Dolphins swam away from Round 3 of the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup with a win over Brisbane Tigers 30-12 and head into this weekend ready to face Souths Logan Magpies.

The Dolphins reversed their Round 2 form, going from losing to the Tweed Seagulls 32-10 to completing an impressive win over the Tigers.

Coach Jamie Floss will be searching for some positive consistency this week when the Dolphins head home to host the undefeated Magpies.

“We didn’t change much from week two to week three, the score changed, but that was about it,” Floss said.

“It’s finding that consistency within the game, not allowing parts of the game to drift.”

ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 3:30pm
Venue : Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

The Dolphins started well and attacked with venom, with two tries in the first eight minutes through Jacob Laban and Will McCulloch getting them a dream start.

Jayden Alefaio liked the look of this and got in on the act with two tries in six minutes.

“Alefaio is playing out of postion for us and doing a great job, he is normally in the centres but we have him on the wing,” Floss said.

“He’s great at bringing the ball back for us and gets our sets off to a great start.”

Drew Timms filled in at a number of roles and got them all done.

“He’s the heart of this team, he’s a real leader,” Floss said.

This week will be a test for the Dolphins, however, coming up against the red-hot Magpies who posted a resounding 58-6 win in their last game.

The Magpies were led by reliable performers like Blake Mozer, whose football is the made bed of this competition, organised with all the corners tucked in.

Mozer has been guiding the Magpies around well, with Jye Gray and Tim Sielaff-Burns also standouts in the side.

“We will be minimising our mistakes and giving ourselves the best chance to make sure that we are in the game with a great attitude,” Floss said.

“We won’t be intimidated by them, they’re a great team, but we need to be ready to be physical.”

Match : Seagulls v Tigers
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH
Venue : Piggabeen Sports Complex, Tweed Heads

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Tweed Seagulls had the week off in Round 3, while their opponents this weekend, Brisbane Tigers, were tamed by the Dolphins in their 30-12 loss.

The Tigers have had a tough start to the season with two loses, so this week, a positive performance is important to gaining some confidence and move forward.

Match: Jets v Bulls
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2:30pm
Venue : North Ipswich Reserve, Ipswich

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Ipswich Jets lost by six points to Sunshine Coast Falcons last weekend in an outing that showed improvement. Tyler Peckham-Harris was great at fullback for the Jets with 216 metres, while Regan Payne made 25 tackles.

Overall, the Jets controlled the ball well, making more line breaks than the Falcons, but they just couldn’t finish with a win.

The Jets will be looking to make better use of their 32 tackle breaks when they take on the Bulls this weekend.

The Bulls were charging at the Clydesdales last weekend, with a try to Connor Yeates in the second minute. However, they came unstuck when their defence let the Clydesdales score twice before they could add points again.

Bailey Nash scored three tries for the Bulls and was a danger with the ball.

Match  : Cutters v Pride
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 3:30pm
Venue : BB Print Stadium, Mackay

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Cutters came back against the Blackhawks last weekend, but it wasn’t enough to tame the wild Townsville beast that claimed a comprehensive 38-6 win.

Baden Robinson did his best to make some ground with 154 metres and topped the tackle count with 33 tackles in a great effort on a losing team for Mackay.

Mackay just missed too many tackles and will have to get that right this week against the Pride.

The Pride had a great first win over the Capras with Jason Hallie making a giant 246 metres for the Pride with Cain Hastie leading the way with 25 tackles.

Cameron Nelson made a nonstop effort against the Capras, playing the full 70 minutes.

Match: Falcons v Clydesdales
ROUND 4 – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 4:30pm
Venue : Maroochydore JRL, Sunshine Coast

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Sunshine Coast will be happy with their 24-18 win over Ipswich last weekend. The Falcons sarted well and kept it going to make sure Ipswich couldn’t finish the game over the top of them.

Jayden Smith showed commitment to his tackling art with 33 tackles. Mason Kira was also great in the second row for the Falcons.

Their opposition this weekend is a Clydesdales side that came away from Round 3 with a 34-22 win against Wide Bay Bulls. They dominated the ball use with seven-line breaks and 32 tackle breaks.

On the other side of the ball in defence they missed a low 23 tackles.

Bailey Nash was outstanding with three tries.

Match : WM Seagulls v Bears
ROUND 4 – SUNDAY 20TH MARCH 12:00pm
Venue : BMD Kougari Oval, Brisbane

Wynnum Manly would be keen to push aside their last round against Souths Logan and will take on Burleigh Bears this weekend with a new plan. The Seagulls just missed too many tackles and couldn’t stop the bleeding.

The Bears will be looking to take their first half defence and second half attack and put them together.

Josiah Pahulu was a ground-making machine, gaining 237 metres for the Bears and Joseph Shannon made two-line breaks.

Burleigh made 53 tackle breaks overall, but missed 70 tackles.

Match: Blackhawks v Capras
ROUND 4 – SUNDAY 20TH MARCH 3:00pm
Venue : Jack Manski Oval, Townsville

Match broadcasters : Qplus

Townsville’s Zac Lamont was a stand-out performer for the Blackhawks last weekend where his kicking game was a strong weapon against the Cutters.

Taking on the Capras this weekend, the Central Queensland side will need to put pressure on Lamont and not let him have all the time he wants to place his kicks perfectly.

The Capras were so close against the Pride, but couldn’t get the job finished.

Matthew Hill climbed a hill with 192 metres and made a line break.

William Lewis, Bailey Cavanough and Jaiden Green really took it to the Pride.

Burleigh Bears and Ipswich Jets are in for a late Easter treat this week when they play in a curtain raiser to the Gold Coast Titans v Newcastle Knights clash at Cbus Super Stadium.

Neither Burleigh nor Ipswich have recorded a win in the Cyril Connell Challenge, but will aiming up in the big occasion on Saturday.

Match : Bears v Jets

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast

The weekend off has provided both teams with a chance to stop and reflect; the Jets coming off a 40-10 loss to Souths Logan Magpies, while the Bears went down to Tweed Seagulls 33-6.

Ipswich just didn’t control the ball against the Magpies and paid a heavy price. It’s hard to win games with only 44 per cent of the ball as it means too much work has to be done in defence and the Jets got plenty of practice at tackling with 151 tackles made.

Throw 11 penalties and two sin bins into the mix, it just shows how the Jets made things really hard for themselves.

Lleyton Dodd made 21 tackles topping the count for the game and in attack, while Mutua Brown ran for 75 metres with one-line break.

Jets coach Jye Tuaiamau-Gadsdon said he was excited about the final round for his side.

“It’s our last round, but we get to play on Cbus before the Titans and they have really looked after us with tickets,” Tuaiamau-Gadsdon said.

“It’s going to be a great reward for the Jets.

“What we really want to do this week is finish well.

“Last week, a few players did their own thing and went away from what we talked about; so we just want to show that commitment to our team.”

The Bears had a similar story to tell against Tweed. They were down 16-0 at half-time and with only 39 per cent of the ball, things were all an up hill battle for the side.

But Bears coach Paul Kuhnemann was positive about their comeback.

“We scored just after half-time and that made it 16-6, but then we had a try disallowed and they went down the other end to score,” Kuhemann said.

“That’s a hard lesson. We just keep making mistakes at the wrong time.

“We are really excited about playing at the Coast and before the Titans.

“We have to go there and do it justice and get our defence right.

“The Jets are a good team with threats all over the field.”

Match : Seagulls v Magpies

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Tugun RLFC, Tugun

Perched in a good position, Tweed and Souths Logan will swoop on Saturday at Tugun.

The Magpies are coming off a dominant performance over Ipswich, while Tweed enjoyed a day out against the Bears.

The Magpies were too good for the Jets and had 56 per cent of the ball; while the black and whites will be hoping to dominate field position again after having 71 per cent of possession last week.

Brave Taualai showed plenty of bravery with his 97 metres, while Delacruz Ripley made two line-breaks.

Tweed were up 16-0 and from there, beat the Bears 33-6. The Seagulls had a a smorgasbord of ball to play with and made the most of the extra five minutes they held the ball.

Matthew Barrow made a mammoth 228 metres and two line-breaks as their best.

Match : Devils v Tigers

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Bishop Park, Brisbane

Norths Devils return to Bishop Park on Saturday to face the Tigers after their last excursion was a 26-18 loss to Redcliffe Dolphins.

The Devils got away to a good start and scored twice in the first 16 minutes, but from there, they couldn’t find any joy as the Dolphins bounced back.

The Tigers came away from their home game against Wynnum with a 24-14 win.

Jeremy Trappett made a 122 metre contribution to the win and Luke Anderson broke the line twice.

Match : Dolphins v WM Seagulls

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

Wynnum Manly Seagulls would have had to stop and get something to eat on the way home from their game against Brisbane Tigers after being starved of the ball.

Wynnum had to do a lot of tackling and conceded 10 penalties, gifting the Tigers plenty of opportunity and a 24-14 win.

The Dolphins found a way to win the ‘northside cup’ against Norths 26-18.

After starting slowly, they found their groove by scoring in clumps; that meant the Devils were chasing at half-time down 12-8 and couldn’t come back in the second half.

Match : Pride v Cutters

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Neil Stewart Park, Townsville

The Cutters will be looking to repeat their 26-12 win from the last time they faced off against the Pride.

Balin Burnett was outstanding for the Cutters scoring two tries and making a line break.

Matthew Watts lit up the game with 172 metres for Mackay.

The Pride will be looking to get moving from the start. Allowing tries from the kick-off don’t lead to the best afternoons.

They only had 41 per cent of the ball and gave the Cutters the ball for a full five minutes more than they had it.

Match : Capras v Mustangs

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : Theodore Sports and Recreation Ground, Theodore

Central Queensland Capras are coming home from Maryborough with a rare Cyril Connell Challenge draw.

Liam Barnes was outstanding for the Capras with three tries in 17 minutes and his two line-breaks and 133 run metres was phenomenal.

The Mustangs went to Caloundra, but didn’t get any sun or hot chips, coming home with a 20-18 loss despite dominating 54 per cent of the ball and completing 17 of their 28 sets.

Match : Bulls v Falcons

ROUND 5 – SATURDAY 10TH APRIL
Venue : T.J. O’Neill Oval, Kingaroy

Wide Bay will feel like a draw against the Capras was an unfair result.

With 62 per cent of the ball, the Capras should have been riding it home and saluting, but one line-break to three and 15 tackle breaks to 36 meant their attack didn’t fire.

The Falcons win over the Mustangs was the opposite. They had no ball with 46 per cent of possession and still won 20-18.

Chase Paterson made 25 tackles and Zac Garton made 102 metres.
