Phil Hall Cup: Here’s our 18 top guns from grand final day between Ipswich SHS and Ignatius Park College. The list includes an Ipswich mighty mite and a FNQ prop from the Land of the Giants.

Ipswich SHS were now into the NRL Schoolboys Cup national grand final in two weeks after a gutsy win over Ignatius Park College by 30-10.

Despite the scoreline, it was a great grand final locked 4-all at halftime, and only broken open by the flashing feet and speed of Gabriel Satrick.

Tyler Peckham-Harris (Ipswich SHS)

The pocket dynamo must feel 10 foot tall and bulletproof. He is playing above his weight, running with gusto and giving Ipswich SHS momentum from the back by ducking and weaving extra metres.

All the while he is also capable of slipping through and running the distance to score. And what about his bomb taking? Wow, this kid is on fire.

Tre Fotu (Ipswich SHS)

Forget the scoreline. The grand final was a war of attrition and the challenge from Ignatius Park College was enormous.

Even Ipswich SHS left edge battleship Fotu was blocked from his best. But the Queensland centre Fotu chipped away, chipped away and eventually the dam wall broke, leading to the young champion scoring two tries.

James Frazer (Ipswich SHS)

When you are playing in a grand final and you turn for home locked at 4-all, ever point is like coming upon a diamond.

Frazer’s goal kicking was amazing, turning four points into six as Ipswich put despite between themselves and Ignatius Park.

Jalen Afamasaga (Ipswich SHS)

When Ipswich SHS were confronted by Ignatius Park’s Berlin Wall defence across the first half, there could have been panic in the ranks.

There is no doubt there must have been thoughts of “here, do something’’ as the ball was passed from team mates to Afamasaga.

And I will tell you what Afamasaga didn’t do.

He didn’t panic. He stayed the course and after an even tempered performance, helped get Ipswich to high ground and safety.

Ahmani Leluia (Ipswich SHS)

Ahmani made up for lost time with a powerful opening and second stint effort when the Iggy park pack was at the peak of their powers. He was coming back from injury and both he and interchange forrward Loko Tonga maintained the rage during their stints.

Josiah Pahulu (Ipswich SHS)

He doesn’t wear a cape, but sometimes I think he’s superman.

The bloke plays the hardest position on the field, yet is relentless with his power and leg drive and effort in attack and defence.

Pahulu must have the endurance of a triathlete and is certainly inspiring to his team mates.

Ipswich SHS cherish yet another title.

Anton Naiyep (Ipswich SHS)

Anton Naiyep is doing a fantastic job at centre after being thrown into the role late in the season following an injury to Caleb Jackson.

Defensively he is strong, and he is also powerful with his ruck runs from the back. And let’s give Jacobi Shaw a pat on the back, He had a big task opposite Mene, but the yojung block stuck like glue to the Iggy Park prime mover.

Gabriel Satrick (Ipswich SHS)

The Super Sub was at the peak of his powers and changed the game in the second half with his quick feet and vision.

He tilted the match his team’s way and, if there was a man of the match, he would have got the award.

Rene Bagon (Ipswich SHS)

Bagon was Super Sub No.2. He had a huge match off the bench and was rewarded with a late try.

Ipswich needed his impact against a big pack and he delivered on the big stage.

Jamal Shibasaki ((Ignatius Park)

He was Ignatius ParK’s best player, a high class middle forward with the mobility of a centre and the toughness of a prop.

He also produced the tackle of the match, a jaw-dropping hit that somehow Anton Naiyep survived.

Jack Laing (Ipswich SHS)

It is so easy to take Laing for granted, such is his consistency. But the No.13 remains the glue of the side, a battle hardened middle man with a high, effective work rate that must be a dream player to coach.

Elijah Joe (Ignatius Park)

Joe was a dangerman and it was red alert time when he touched the ball in the 20 minutes leading up to halftime.

Brodie Dineen and Izaya Leedie (Ignatius Park)

They were an outstanding pairing, tough as teak and defiant on the fringes. Queensland centre Tre Fotu finally owned the left edge, but it took a long time for him to win the battle. The boys should be proud of their efforts at left and right centre.

Matthew Hunter (Ignatius Park)

Watching Hunter play was worth the hype. The Iggy Park captain, he got his team around the paddock expertly and it is little wonder they won two titles – the Confraternity Shield and Payne Cup on his watch.

Henry Teutau and Jamaine Stanley (Ignatius Park)

We mentioned the towering Ipswich forward Loko Tonga and now we are mentioning another two boys from the Land of the Giants.

Both Teutau and Stanley laid one solid platform for their side.

It took Gabriel Satrick’s flashing feet to bring their work undone, but the big boppers retained their reputation as among the best middle men in the north. Henry Teutau, in particular, hit like a Mack truck and dented the Ipswich line.

Phil Hall Cup state schoolboy league grand final: Ignatius Park take on Ipswich SHS

Rising star Gabriel Satrick turned in a dummy half masterclass as Ipswich beat St Ignatius to continue their magic carpet ride through the schoolboys season.

Ipswich SHS’s Gabriel Satrick jumped aboard his team’s magic carpet ride through the schoolboy season to spearhead the side to an historic Phil Hall Cup state final rugby league win.

North Queensland product Satrick was the difference, as unbeaten Ipswich SHS defeated Townsville’s Ignatius Park College 30-10 at CBUS Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Northern raiders’ Ignatius Park had launched a stunning hit and run mission for half the match, delivering sledge hammer like defence which stung their rivals.

But Satrick’s injection into dummy half tilted momentum and contributed to three tries in 10 minutes just after halftime.

Superb goal kicking from James Frazer also saw his team balloon from a 4-all at halftime to a 22-4 lead 16 minutes from fulltime.

The explosive acceleration of Gatrick, Ipswich’s Australian schoolboys dummy half, gave Ipswich the edge, with the Yarrabah product’s try seven minutes into the second half crucial.

Ignatius Park had done their homework with their outstanding marker and ruck defence, but Satrick is the best in the business and found the tryline with a dash and a lunge under pressure from Ignatius Park defenders.

It was Satrick’s quick tap and run minutes later which also gave Ipswich SHS field position for his winger Jacobi Shaw to score and within the space of three minutes, Ipswich were leading 16-4.

“It has been a great season, full of fun, Satrick said.

“We now wait for the next game and hopefully win it all,’’ he said in reference to playing the NRL National Schoolboy final against Sydney’s Patrician Brothers, Fairfield in two weeks.

“I came on, but it was a good team effort. Our team just keeps showing up and we love each other,’’ said Satrick, who is signed by the Melbourne Storm.

After Satrick’s double magic trick, centre Fotu crossed for his second try and Ipswich could taste victory.

But with 11 minutes remaining Ignatius Park’s Jack Prior crossed, and with Brodie Dineen’s sideline conversion, it was back to 22-10.

Ignatius Park’s Rayzarlin Pearson then made a break, but in the covering tackle he mistimed his pass and Ipswich survived. The match was much closer than the scoreline indicated.

Ignatius Park were looking to snap an 18-year drought stretching back to 2004 when they last won the state final.

“We gave them too much footy in the second half and when they get possession, they really wear you down physically,’’ reflected Ignatius Park coach Steve Lansley.

“We just didn’t have enough possession in the second half to compete with them.

“I was really proud of our effort and we have had a great year.

“They showed up and we’re not intimidated by the south east corner.

“The boys will learn that when you play good teams, you have to hold the footy in the second half.

“The best thing for their development is going forward, they know they can match it with these boys.’’

Ipswich SHS’s win followed last week’s historic first ever Langer Trophy win.

Those involved in that day should bottle the moment and carry it around with them for the rest of their lives, and this moment should sit alongside it.

Iggy Park also had a magnificent season, and after winning the Confraternity Shield and then Payne Cup, their players left nothing in the tank.

“What we did in the first half to control them, when they were at their best, I am most proud of,’’ said Ipswich coach Joshua Bretherton.

“They are a very, very good team but the resolve we showed to stay in control when the game could have got away from us, that was what I was most proud of.’’

It was a match full of near misses and try-saving tackles, among the best of them being:

In the first half, Ipswich SHS confronted a Berlin Wall for most of the 30 minutes, with impregnable defence blocking pathways to the line for Ipswich heavy hitters Josiah Pahulu and Tre Fotu.

Those defensive efforts across the first six minutes set the highest of standards and must have had Ipswich wondering how to get through, and around their northern rivals.

After the defensive blockade, Ignatius Park rebounded to the other end of the field where winger Rayzarlin Pearson scored.

Ipswich had also defended superbly on the line but a backs ball movement through the hands of Matthew Hunter, Elijah Joe and Izaya Leedie helped get Pearson over to score.

After ebb and flow following the try, Ipswich centre Tre Fotu finally burst through the barn door three minutes before halftime to open his team’s scoring. It was 4-all at halftime.

Not being able to go through Ignatius Park, Ipswich went around them with a wide left edge spread that got Fotu on the outside of his rivals.
