AIS OUTCLASS YOUNG LIONS
Great Britain Community Lions U18s 12 v 52 Australian Institute of Sport
Leigh Sporting Village
Story by : Daniel McKenzie
The Australian Institute of Sport have won the Discovery Cup tri-series after a convincing victory over the Great Britain Community Lions at Leigh Sports Village.
The final game of the series was scheduled to be played in St. Helens but had to be relocated because of a frozen pitch at the GPW Recruitment Stadium.
The Aussies had the best of the early exchanges and raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to quick fire tries from Jake Seaton and Jordan Rankin.
The Community Lions recovered well though and had a good spell of possession in Australia’s half, Substitute Tom Connick kept the Lions in the game with a well deserved try for the home side.
The game remained in the balance until a flurry of tries from the tourists saw them take control of the game before half time.
A number of unforced errors by the home side in difficult conditions helped Jackson Littlejohn, Mitchell Barnes and Gary Riccardi cross the whitewash in the final stages to make it 28-6 at the break.
Great Britain started the second half the stronger of the two sides, stand off Mark Wool scored a try which was followed by an impressive conversion by Jamie Tibbs from the touchline, making the score 28-12 to the visitors.
Both sides tightened up their defences as Great Britain battled to get back into the game. Tough tackling and a slippery ball were to blame for a number of handling errors in the final third by both teams.
However, it was Australia that managed to assert their authority on the game once again.
A good passing move unlocked the Great Britain defence allowing Australian loose forward Ryan James to score an impressive try in the corner.
The Lions began to look jaded and Australia capitalised in the final stages with tries in quick succession from Jake Finn, Scott Rosser and Jackson Littlejohn.
The final score was 50-12 to Australia but the Community Lions can be proud of their effort against a very talented side.
Hooker Kurt Baptiste was awarded Man of the Match for the tourists after a solid all round performance and second row forward, Jacob Fairbanks picked up the award for the Lions.
Australian head coach Brian Johnson said: “We’ve had a great tour, the lads have enjoyed every moment. The Lions are a very talented side and the score line didn’t really reflect the quality of our opposition.”
The Community Lions head coach, Carl Briscoe was obviously disappointed with the result but was optimistic about the futures of his players: “I’m really proud of the lads for not giving up. We matched them in the first twenty minutes of each half but they are a top side.” |

AUSSIES CLEAN SWEEP ON '08 TOUR
The Australian Insitiute of Sport Rugby League team have done their country proud by remaining undefeated on this 2008 tour of France & the United Kingdom.
The 2nd Test was played on a synthetic pitch which according to Brian Johnston was 10 meters too short and 10 meters too narrow.
The Aussies turned up to to play and continue to tourture for the English Rugby League.
Interview with head coach tonight.
Australia is just a class above the GB Community Lions after victory in the 2nd Test in atrocious conditions.
Congratulations to Coaches Brian Johnston from the AIS and Brendan Barlow from Wavell SHS and ASSRL coach, and staff, also to the boys how have been away from home for 3 weeks and have had to endure lots of different weather conditions.

The kick off has been moved to 7.45pm and admission is now free of charge.

| ST. HELENS FOOTY GROUND FROZEN SOLID
THe 2nd Test between the AIS and the GB Community Lions will have to be moved as the Saints home ground is FROZEN - heheheheh, now that has to be one of the funniest things we have heard at ourfootyteam this year.
Still laughing but anyway, according to Richard Donlon from Rugby League Services in Yorkshire, the game is most likely to be moved to Leigh, Leigh is a small amateur club with a G3 pitch, in Leigh, still in the County of York. |
Jordan Rankin Interview by phone @ just after midnight (syd time) Thurday 4th Dec 2008 |
| What are you doing after this tour Jordan? |
| Going back to the Gold Coast & having some solid training when i get back |
| What do you think of the standard of footy over there? |
| Yeah the standard is improving, its getting better each year, it's not quite up to standard [in Australia], we look forward to them improving over the next couple of years |
| You have had a terrific year, what was the highlight? |
| I'd definatley have to say representing the Australian Schoolboys & being Vice Captain of Australia, also my NRL debut was just as huge. |
| For such a young bloke you have achived so much, what are your goals for your future |
| Concidering I am still at school, to go good at school and do good, if I get to play a couple games of 1 st Grade while at school that would be good too. |
| What are your tips for young players following you boys on ourfootyteam ? |
| The most important thing to do is to ENJOY YOUR FOOTY, take it as it comes, enjoy the ups & downs. Pretty much just enjoy what your doing. |
| What do you like at school Jordan |
| It's a Sports High School, I love sport & playing footy. I like Maths & English too. |
| What is your favourite Music ? |
| I like R'n'B, most of the latest stuff out like Chris Brown & stuff like that. |
| What are the main differences between French & English rugby league ? |
| Standard and organisation of the teams, the French play more like Union, the English try the 'push and barge', they go real hard at first. |
| The French did good, How do they play ? |
| The French did alright, we were a little off our game that night, to the French guys credit, they went well, they like to go from one side of the field to the other, they like a fast game. |
| The boys won the Arrive alive Cup this year, what that like ? |
| I dunno, it's so surreal, being from Palm Beach [Currumbin], it was just a dream that we could win. It's the highest schoolboys competion in Australia... still can't believe it happened. |
| During the AaC Grand Final you got smashed a few times, did opposition players target you in school footy ? |
| Yeah pretty much, I got all the name calling and stuff, but you don't worry about that stuff. |
| What did you think of the World Cup ? |
| The WC was pretty good, it was a good standard of footy, PNG was good to watch, especially against the English, it was good to watch |
| Where did you boys watch it ? |
| We didn't actually get to watch it, we were on a bus going to Paris, one of the guys with us was from the Australian side, he was getting updates via text, it was exciting, |
| So are you going to come and play with the Sharks ? |
| I dunno, see what happens in the future, hopefully I'll stay at home on the Gold Coast, that would be best. |
| phone cut off, ran outta credit on that phone - sorry Jordan, ring u after the test mate - lol |

We spent 20 minutes or so talking to Jordan Rankin who is an informative bloke to talk to, Jordan was relaxed and keen after we couldn't work out country codes and pressing wrong buttons on the phone for a while, but we worked it out.

LIONS READY TO FIGHT BACK
Story By : St. Helen's Footy Club
The Great Britain Community Lions U18s are ready to fight back.
After suffering a heavy 54-2 defeat in last weeks first test against the Australian Institute of Sport, coach Carl Briscoe is determined that his young Lions will improve in the second test.
“We were all disappointed with how it went last week and we’ll be looking to make a massive improvement in the second test,” said Briscoe.
“We came up against a typical Australian side that played superb support rugby, but our players deserve praise for their effort. We’ll be looking to play a lot smarter this time round and it’s something we’ll definitely have to do if we want to compete at this level.”
AIS coach Brian Johnson - no stranger to British fans following his spell in charge of Warrington – was pleased with his side’s performance at Dewsbury and is now looking for them to carry it on into the St Helens clash.
“Our job now is to convince the players that the Community Lions aren’t as poor as the score line suggests,” said Johnson.
“Runaway scores like that can happen but I’m sure the Lions will be trying to square the balance on Thursday night.”

AIS JUST TOUGHED IT OUT
Story & Photo's By :
After the AIS's firey victory in the 1st Test against the Great Britian Community Lions we caught up with AIS super coach Brian Johnston.
We asked Brian Johnston in what area did the Aussies dominate?
"The score did not reflect the quality of the game or the players involved.
We managed to come out on top in the first sorting out period.
Thing just went right for us from then on."
Brain wanted to point out that if not for the boys getting on top in the first few tough few minutes if could have gone either way.
"We had contributations from the whole team, Ryan James was outstanding, our hooker was sensational in defence and while running the ball." Brian proudly said
The Aussies get it on in the 2nd Test vs the GB Community Lions on Friday morning Aussie time and have moved base camp to York, thats where William Wallace chopped of the King's cousins head in the Mel Gibson movie BraveHeart.
The boys will be training tomorrow at the St. Peters Fields in York and can't wait to play
Some of the boys are a bit home sick, not long to go now and they will all be back in the good old Aussie SunShine.
Good luck fella's |

LIONS HANDED HARSH LESSON
Story BY : RLF
GREAT BRITAIN COMMUNITY LIONS U18S 2 V 54 AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT
The Tetley’s Stadium, Dewsbury
The Great Britain Community Lions were given a harsh lesson by the Australian Institute of Sport last night.
Despite taking an early lead via the boot of second rower Ben Bailey, the Lions had no answer to the powerful Australians who were superbly marshalled by half backs Gary Riccardi and Scott Rosser.
After an even first 15 minutes the visitors began to stamp their authority and by the interval had powered into a commanding 34-2 lead. The tries came at regular intervals with almost every score involving the half backs and man of the match Jordan Rankin, who also produced a great display of goal kicking.
Despite an improved second period from Great Britain the Australians still managed a further four scores to run out comfortable winners by 54-2.

The Australian Institute of Sport rugby league team have smashed the Great Britain Community Lions Under 18's at Tetley Stadium over night.
The young Australians controlled the game from the kick off with some typical hard work and discipline and held a formidable 2 - 32 lead at half time.
Wavell SHS super star Kurt Baptiste had a blinder steering the Aussie's around Tetley Stadium at Hooker and was rewarded with the Coaches Man of the Match Award in a powerful team effort.
The standout in the Test match was another Queenslander Jordan Rankin, and was presented with the Man of the Match Award for best on the ground.

1 ST TEST PLAYED TONIGHT
Story BY :
AIS Vs GB COMMUNITY LIONS U 18's
THe 1st Test against the old enemy kicks off at about 6:00 in the am tomorrow.
Here we are less than a month to Christmas and we are still enjoying junior rugby league at the highest level, who said the footy season was over?
Australian teams have a proud and successful history in the many battles against English teams, this great tradition continues with the 1 st Test between these great rugby league nations.
After the World Cup, the Aussie's will be keen just to remind the world we can still play.
The 1 st Test will be a challenge for this talented AIS team, the GB Community Lions are full of good players, many have risen through many of the Super League academies and should have a few decent skills this time around.
It should be a full strength side that takes on the English boys in the Great Britain Community Lions U 18's at Tetley's Stadium.

GB COMMUNITY LIONS HUNGRY FOR SOME ROO
Story by :
The Great Britain Community Lions have been preparing for the AIS for the past 12 months and on Saturday had a final training run before the team was selected.
The GB Community Lions squad have been training pretty much full on for the past month.
The Lions are a good side and are confident of defeating the visiting Australians despite a narrow 14 - 12 loss to the French Juniors 2 weeks ago.
The Australians have just left France in their wake after smashing the French Juniors in their two tests which gave just about every player some game time including the Gold Coast Titans Jordan Rankin.
Townsville's Cathedral College Justin O'Neill is on fire scoring tries in both the French games.
Great Britain Community Lions Manager Joe Elliott said: "We will be holding our final training session on Saturday and naming the team for the first Test after.
"The AIS are sure to provide us with a very stern challenge but myself and the coaching staff have every confidence in the squad. It would be great to get as many people as possible to Tetley's Stadium as their support will really lift the lads."
The Australians, mostly from regional New South Wales and Queensland where it is hot and dry, will be trying to stay warm and must be itching go get at the Lions on Thursday for the 1st Test.
The first test against the Great Britain Community Lions kicks off at 7:30 (6:30 am Sydney time) at Tetley Stadium

POMS LINING UP FOR A CRACK
Shaw Cross youngster Danny Naughton is dreaming of making his Great Britain debut this week.
Danny, 18, is part of the Great Britain Community Lions Under 18s squad that takes on the Australian Institute of Sport in a two match test series.
The first encounter between the sides takes place at The Tetley’s Stadium, on Thursday 27th November, kick off 7.30pm.
“It’d be great to make my debut for Great Britain, and it’d be extra special as the games in Dewsbury,” said the Shaw Cross stand off.
“We’ve been training as a squad for the last month and there’s some very good players involved so I’m hoping I get the call.”
The Lions go into the test series full of confidence despite narrowly losing out to France Juniors 14-12 last week.
“Despite not coming away with the result we were after in Montpellier we were able to take a lot of positives from the game,” said Great Britain Manager Joe Elliott.
“We will be holding our final training session on Saturday and will be naming the team for the first test afterwards. The AIS are sure to provide us with a very stern challenge but myself and the coaching staff has every confidence in the squad. It would be great to get as many people as possible to The Tetley’s Stadium as their support will really lift the lads.

AIS SECOND TEST
The AIS have defeated a brave French Juniors team overnight with young Dale Copley crossing the line a couple time and Jordan Rankin had a blinder at five eight.
The Needle of Limoux was the stage when the AIS took to the field in the second match against the French Juniors (3), unlike the French Junior team that played on Tuesday, this side had only been together for 2 days so did good to restrict this talented Aussie side to only 32 points.
It was gaps in the French defence in the first half which allowed the Australians to score almost at will.
“I am overall satisfied with completed work by the players. With a little more discipline and of concentration, we could have carried out" said Pascal Jampi, trainer for the French side.
"To face an Australian team as an experiment very enriching, we evaluated our level and we are learning"
The French are very competitive at the Junior level with many junior sides defeating Barla teams this year.
The UK leg of the 2008 AIS Tour starts with a big bang in the 1st Test Thursday 27th November 2008 Tetleys Stadium, Dewsbury (home of Dewsbury Rams RL) |

FRENCH JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE KEEP IMPROVING EACH YEAR
Story By :
As the AIS Rugby League team get ready for their second game against the tough French Juniors tonight, the Aussies will be taking things a bit more serious after the the fisrt game on Tuesday night.
The French Rugby League are doing something right with their school & development of junor rugby league with all French Junior sides amounst the most improved team over the last couple years.
This is almost the Same side that belted a NSW CHS side a couple months ago at Western Weekender Stadium and a few of them played against the Australian Schoolboys in the special Centenary Test Match so won't mind another run at some aussies
The Australians will be sending in a much more seasoned & expericnced side into battle in tonights second Test match than the one that played on Tuesday afternoon France time.
Jordan Rankin from Palm Beach Currumbin SHS the, 2008 Arrive alive Cup Champions, and ohh yeah, the Gold Coast Titans, will play most likely at five eight. Laim Law is a zippy little player and the experience of Kurt Baptiste, Max Ray, Pat O'Hanlon, Justin O'Niell who should all shine. |

AUSSIES NOT SO FOOT LOOSE IN TOULOUSE
Story By :
THe AIS Australian touring side had a tight victory in Toulouse this morning scraping home by mear 2 point margin
The Aussies had a comanding lead of 28 - 6 at half time only to allow our French mates to blast 20 second half points to almost steal the Test Match
Coach Brendan Barlow said he "rested a few players from this game", like Palm Beach Currumbins Jordan Rankin, Ryan James from the Strom watched the game as well.
The Australian camp though this would be the easiest game of the tour and gave the less experienced guys a run, and they did the job only just.
The French juniors came storming home in the second half scoring 18 points in 12 minutes
See what the Aussie coach had to say about the game tomorrow

The Australian Institute of Sport Rugby League team are in France on the 1st leg of their 2008 tour of France & the UK.
The players here after were selected to participate in the game against the Australian Institute of Sports with the team of Junior France 3 that will take place at Limoux to the stadium of the Aiguille on Thursdays November 20 2008 at 3:00 PM
The AIS team is a good one this year with Australian Schoolboys head coach Mr. Brenden Barlow from Marsden SHS is there to help coach... more soon
Thanks to Mr. Simon Huntley, former ASSRL coach who came up with the headline on the 2006 Schoolboys tour.
PATRICK O'HANLON
Mackay SHS rugby league champ Patrick O'Hanlon will take to the footy field again this time in Toulouse, France.
When the Australian Instutite of Sport take on the French Juniors in two test matches.
Pat, who was selected in the Australian schoolboys team this year had to pull out due to breaking his arm.
A couple months in a sling was all Pat needed to fire up and play 1st grade for Mackay.
After this tour with the AIS team, Pat will be moving to Sydney to take up his position with the Parramatta Eels Toyota Cup team.
The first game in on tonight (i think, can't read French very well) and Pat will feature in this star studded team

SMITH HAPPY WITH UNDER-17S DISPLAY
Story By : RLF
England Head Coach Tony Smith was delighted with the Under-17 Academy’s performance in their 38-22 victory over the Australian Institute of Sport at Wakefield’s Belle Vue.
The hosts shrugged off the disappointment of the previous week's two-point defeat at the hands of the same opposition to square the series with a performance of real quality and determination.
"I'm very pleased," said Smith who watched both matches.
"We made improvements as the series went on, and I thought that our boys were very comprehensive out there tonight.
They showed a lot of determination on their own try-line, and that proved to be a big part of their success, and I thought they played some good Rugby League in both games.
"The improvement was certainly in the defensive area tonight, and I thought they played strong.
"A couple of boys got hat-tricks and I was pleased for them, and I thought there were a whole lot of contributions across the whole team.
These guys are improving all the times, and exposure to games like these is great for them.
"The next step for these boys aren't too far off, and the next step for most of these guys is getting some engage Super League experience, and from there, hopefully they will go to the next step.
"They are getting into the habit of beating Australian teams, and that's a good habit to get into!"
The match left England Academy Head Coach Steve Crooks delighted for his players following the frustrations of the defeat at Warrington after the side had outscored the young Aussies by six tries to five.
"Outstanding. I'm just pleased for the players, because over the past six or seven weeks they've got through a tremendous amount of work, and last week I didn't think we got our just deserts.
"Every player who came into the squad has had a tremendous input, and even though there were a few players who had to pull out, but ultimately the players really wanted to play two games against the Australians and earn some respect for it, and at the end of the day, we have done."
"The difference between us last week and this is down to a little bit of experience, really. I used the phrase 'youthful naivety' after last Friday's game and we've done a lot of work on that.
We've been a bit smarter and really, over the last six weeks, the side has grown up a little bit.
"After our defeat last week, our focus was all about this game, and we determined not to shoot ourselves in the foot as we did last week.
That we didn't is a measure of the learning curve we've come through in the last week."
"We did a lot of work on our defence, but also offensively, where we got the ball a bit wider, were a lot more direct, and worked on the edges. It's very pleasing when the guys are good enough and smart enough to come up with ideas out there, and that's why we beat them I think.
"There were some smart young men out there tonight who can go to the next level.
Tony Smith worked with us this week and the reaction of the players was tremendous, and I think that we can go on to see some of them in engage Super League.
"We had to make a couple of changes and the lads we brought in did a great job for us. Jonny Lomax, like Kallum Watkins, is a year younger than everybody else, and between them they did a fantastic job.
"And Chris Clarkson, he had to play out of position, but that's just international, you can get centres playing back row and forwards having to play in the backs - things like that - but you have to pull out all your trumps and that's what they did - credit to them.
I was very proud of the whole squad, including those who didn't play. They epitomised what the academy is all about."
There were hat-tricks of tries for both Richard Myler and Shaun Ainscough as England outscored their opponents by seven tries to four, but this was a victory which needed to be built on the foundations of solid defence, with the Aussies always posing a genuine threat with their quick footwork and strong running. |
