MATRAVILLE SHS WINS ' HIGH SCHOOLS ' ARRIVE ALIVE 7's

09/02 MATRAVILLE SHS has won the 2007 NSW High Schools Arrive alive Sevens Schoolboys knockout competition.

MATRAVILLE SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL won the final 18 - 14 over RED BEND COLLEGE who travelled all the way from Forbes in country NSW.

Matraville went straight into the grand final with a convincing win over a fast finishing Balgowlah Boys High School 38 - 16 in their semi.

In the end Red Bend College put up a fine effort to stay in the game with this highly skilled and slick Matraville Sports outfit after being down 14 - 8 in the first of the seven minute halves.

Red Bend College did it a lot tougher in their semi final with a very close fought victory over Hunter SHS 12 - 8 to play in the grand final.

The High School Arrive alive Sevens was on with 20 schools battling it out in four pools of knockout compeitition.

The first game began at 10:00 and then forty games where all teams player each other twice until we had the finals finishing at about 5:30pm.

Apart from the four schools in the finals, the crowd favourite would have to go to Sydney school Al-Faisal College.

These Aussie boys are all Muslums who love their footy so much that they all caught the train from Auburn in Sydney's inner west all the way to the St. Mary's train station then they walked all the way to the stadium.

When Al-Faisal College scored their first try, all the teams and the entire crowd of 200 odd people roared their approval including their opponents from Sarah Redfern College.

"This was the spirit of today's competition" said St. Marys RLFC junior development manager Jim Jones.
"the whole day was held in great spirit and was a great advertisement for schoolboys rugby league".
